He, too, thought like that. He would have kept thinking like that, if fate hadn’t placed him at precisely the right moment, in the correct place.[break][break]

Even if her eyes betray far greater concerns, he thinks it best not to goad this creature of survival with anything approaching bait.[break][break]
“…anyway. I can take that deal.” His eyes follow her, looking where she looks. It’s the tower, the one he can never bring himself to approach. This dream will end, just like his dream of Galar ended. A notion that they will not stay in this prison for much longer grows stronger every night, spurred by instinct.[break][break]

Three stand against an army. Beyond them lies the true foe, a general that must be slain. It reminds him of another battlefield. Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki was there, too, always by his side. Her Nihilego numbs his wound before he can voice protest. It does not make walking any easier, his limp persists, but the pain is numbed.[break][break]
In its place is rash adrenaline. He is part of a grand army, a cabal of heroes, generals, and demi-gods. Three foes stand before them. Three must be slain. Once more, he wishes he had his gun. Fezandipiti floats in the air, spreading its sickly sweet aroma.[break][break]
“See you’ve got an Urshifu too, Oscar.” Navy grins. “We’ll have to acquaint Shuwen and him later.” For now, they have a battle to fight. Allegiances are cast aside, at least for this one battle. The Alchemist illeana reyes works with a black monster named Zev Harcourt.[break][break]
Remiel Calcifet and Elise Calcifet fire brilliant flashes of psychic energy at one of their foes. Normal folk, those not blessed by any god, still stand and fight. He takes heart from Greyson Connors’s ideals, his sync stone humming along with his fellow Elite Four member’s. Andrea Vaneau's conviction makes him smile approvingly.[break][break]
“We can win this.” He says to no one in particular. “We’ve gotta win this.” Even if tomorrow promises war, they will only survive today if they work together.[break][break]
This is what you’re gonna see if you try and take Hoenn, Eternatus. His thoughts mirror the Visionary’s, although they fixate on different enemies. He wonders if Naomi Sato is there, somewhere in the crowd. It is dreadfully hard to spot one Unown among a sea of Pokemon. Instead, he focuses on the task at head.[break][break]
Slamming his fist onto the ground, his adamant fighting spirit reverberates off of the sync stones around him, searching for other fighters. A massive fighting field spreads across the battlefield, empowering any who would face the Loyal Three with raging fists.[break][break]
“I’ve had just about enough of you.” He shouts at Fezandipiti, the warden who tormented him for a week. Arthur rushes off, power gathering along the edge of his fist. Bouncing up through the air, energy gathers along his fist. Raw fighting spirit, empowered by reckless bravery and the fighting field, slams into the mask. The drain punch aims to shatter it, Arthur's scales ringing in rage. Below, Navy raises his hand high and launches an aura sphere, knocking himself back a pace.[break][break]
“Come on!” He shouts to the rest. “We’ve gotta get to that bastard behind ‘em!”

Yet still, she sounds like she was a kind soul. He prays she’ll find her rest, somewhere, wherever fallen Pokemon go. There is no rest for him, who hears that awful confession. Closing his eyes, he breathes in wicked air, taking it into himself and finding it feels at home in his lungs.[break][break]
“And she’d give you the chance again, if she could.” He knows, because that is what a kind being would do. “But I don’t think she made the right call, offering to take away that pain…” He makes no attempt to back off. Looking into her green eyes, he somehow feels caught in a battle more desperate than anything Melody Miro or Greyson Connors could put him through.[break][break]
“All the kindest people I know hurt, Miss. They hurt bad. It’s knowing that pain that lets ‘em be that way.”[break][break]
If he was not fighting every instinct in his body – to be the man his father was, to hurt someone as if that pain could render judgement, he would admire her for even getting out of bed. He wonders how many even know the pain is there. His own burdens feel like the weight of the world, and her life is just as rich as his.[break][break]
“I’m not gonna hate you, Ms. Fiorelli.” He says quietly. “If you killed something that innocent, you’ll get your due one day, but it’s not gonna be from me.” A pause, followed by a question.[break][break]
“You gonna try and kill me for saying this, if we meet again after Big Silph and the rest find us a way out of here?”

Hattori listens like any good shinobi should. A finger raises in interjection when the word Michael is said. The frog shakes his head, eye falling upon his Lord.[break][break]
“Uh, call me Navy. I’ve been meaning to change it for years, but Navy Navidson sounds too cheesy. I need to get hitched so I can take my wife’s last name.” He laughs awkwardly, but doesn’t dwell on it. No point in taking away from the question. The trainer looks back to his partner Pokemon, wondering how he will respond to a question like that.[break][break]
This time, Hattori points a finger at Navy. His hands twine into the rough shape of a heart before he thumps his own chest in a show of solidarity. Afterwards, he hops to the ground before the bar. He has no words, but he has tools with which he can tell a story. Smoke billows from Hattori’s hand, sculpted with precision while it holds its shape. The smokescreen takes the shape of a Greninja much larger than himself – a typical specimen of his species.[break][break]
Beside them is the rough shape of a human. Hattori’s hand traces to the crowd on the screen. They cheer for a flashy Aggron, or an oversized Garchomp. They’re humans that would dismiss him outright, were it not for the fighting master.[break][break]
The smoke is swatted away, wafting towards the room’s ventilation and rushing harmlessly outside. A second figure is shaped from fresh smoke, this one resembling a man holding a creature Hattori’s size.[break][break]
Hattori looks to his Lord, wondering if he understands. Navy pulls his hat down, trying to look stoic.[break][break]
“…if I’m not calm, then the guy who thought I was worth a damn dies. That right?” Strange how he never truly realized that Hattori and him are very similar.[break][break]
The Greninja nods, pleased with that response. He looks to Sevastian and awaits his next question.

“Winter let me intervene. I beat up my dad. Little punk that I was took the wrong lesson from it.” He wonders if he should tell the whole story, and then decides it’s better someone knows. “That me was an Elite Four when Slateport attacked. That train that took off north for Rustboro got derailed cause the League gave a bad order. That me ended up going to Rocket.”[break][break]
He hates that he did, and the sentiment is almost snarled.[break][break]
“He was good. He hurt people ‘cause he could, and ‘cause no one could stop him. You were the only one he couldn’t kill, ‘til he pissed off every Rocket after Galar so bad Walsh marked him for death. I hate that I could be like that, if things turned out different.” [break][break]
He pauses, an intrusive question breaking him away from the story.[break][break]
“Did Winter let you step into yours, or did you just watch? Cause it felt like I was in the world, not just watching it play out.”

“Yeah.” He says, gently turning to leave. His eyes harden again when he sees the rangers gossiping. A look sends them running. Having just seen the League’s fighting master throw a punch, no one is in a hurry to see if Shuwen will intervene twice. Instead, he walks outside.[break][break]
There’s still light out. The light wins another day. Their universe remains intact. Kyle is gone, and the world keeps spinning. He takes out a cigar, lighting it with shaking hands.[break][break]
“I met Kyle when I was eight. We were the same age. He was some orphan. Can’t believe someone would be shitty enough to abandon him – miss out on a shot at being part of his life. He thought I was weird when I wanted to hang out at his place, the orphanage, instead of going home, but he never pushed too hard.” Another drag, he’s puffing like a dragon again.[break][break]
“I hate what this war turned him into.”

The water is taken and drank greedily. There’s a lecture in there somewhere about proper drinking techniques. Proper consumption of water is more important than downing a gallon in one sitting. Navy finds he doesn’t care. His throat is parched. He needs the water, needs it worse than he’s needed most things in his life.[break][break]
A gentle ache pangs around his wrists where the restraints kept him down. Back in his right mind, he lays in bed, listening to the doctor’s questions. No attempt to stand up is made. He wouldn’t want to undo the IV line running in his arm, or mess anything else up. For all his other failings, his survival instincts remain keen.[break][break]
Before he answers, he takes another sip, along with the pill. A smile crosses his bearded lips.[break][break]
“Why oh why didn’t I take the blue pill?” He quotes a certain movie that was famous long ago, made just before his calendar birthday. It’s a small joke, accompanied by a snort. Navy has always been the sort of man to laugh at his own jokes.[break][break]
“Last thing I remember was passin’ out during a fight with Temp. Guess he brought me here ‘cause I was in a bad way. There’s…” His eyes flick to the television. It isn’t turned to the news, but he thinks the implication is clear enough. “…my job’s important now more than ever.”[break][break]
Almost as an afterthought, he gives himself an amateur diagnosis.[break][break]
“I think that toxic chain that kept poppin’ up last month fucked with me hard.”

The beer salves his wounds like a band-aid on a knee torn apart by buckshot. It’s a nice thought, not nearly strong enough, but he drinks all the same. Perhaps if he had a six-pack, he would feel something. Instead, he savors the aftertaste of rotten bread.[break][break]
“I told myself Gabe would come back.” It’s a burning memory from a long, long time ago. Looking back across a vast gulf of twenty years, he tries to remember the life of a street detective. Even after Kyle showed him Gabe’s body, he held out hope his brother was going to walk back through the door.[break][break]
“He didn’t have Ho-oh, but…” A sigh cuts the sentence off.[break][break]
“We can’t even protect our own.”

Hattori, unlike his Lord, has no enemies. When Temp makes the attempt to save Navy’s life, the frog listens and complies. Spoken language is a gift granted to humanity from the creator. They use it to tell stories, weave myths, defy their natures. Navy sees Temp as some mighty foe, which he by all rights is, but that is but one side of a complicated being.[break][break]
Reaching for the pokeballs, he studies them, as if he will find some grand insight on what is inside. Choosing one at random, he releases…[break][break]
…a Flareon, which seems to make good on its master’s words. Were Hattori Vortigern, Shuwen, or Roland, he would square up with masculine bravado. It would be a good fight. No one would sing about the fight, it might get his Lord killed, but it would be a good fight.[break][break]
Hattori is none of those three. Instead, he presses the button again. The shadow Pokemon returns into its ball, caught off guard by occam’s razor – the deadliest weapon in a shinobi’s arsenal. The next two red flashes expel the correct duo.[break][break]
“Ja.” Says Hattori.
