She frowns, “But walks are better?”

Her gaze shifts to where her scrafty is picking a fight with a breloom. It tilts forward and bowls the mushroom creature over with a HEAD SMASH. Intrigued by the strangeness of the creature, she tosses a pokeball out.

“Dunno,” Blue answers, a sullen rise and fall of her shoulders. “Sleep, I guess. Find noisy places.”

She’s not sure she likes her mind being quiet.

Blue stared down mutinously at the text she’d send with her own two opposable thumbs. What had she been thinking? It wasn’t like she’d talked to Shinra much in the months since their terse conversation in the silent icelands. Worsened by the game she later played that featured a Shinra who’d rather forget her to restore happiness than involve her in it.[break][break]

It had been easier to bury her head and tip into work full throttle. kept her busy, and when she wasn’t working with or for him, she was doing odd jobs. Bouncing at rocket-operated bars and clubs. Just like she’d said, sort of.[break][break]

If she were being more honest, she’d acknowledge the fact that she’d been in Slateport more than once since they’d last seen each other. Usually she wasn’t alone, though. This was the first solo job she’d had in a while that was even relatively close to where Shinra lived. And yeah, she knew where he lived.[break][break]

That had been information she’d been sure to obtain ages ago. Before she’d left Fortree PD.[break][break]

Her impulsive subconscious got the better of her. Had her sending him a message before her insecurities could insist that the actual Shinra probably wanted to forget her too. The doubt shivered through her, twisting her up the longer there were no typing text bubbles from his end. His scarf was draped at the end of her bedframe. The memory of fingers brushing her hair away still lit little fires under her skin.[break][break]

Bonnie pawed at her ankle, sensing her agitation. Her internal conflict. Sitting on the saddle of her bike, Blue stooped forward and scooped the petite poochyena up. Usually she and Clyde followed in a pair, but he’d been left to recuperate from a tough job a couple days prior.[break][break]

Burying her nose against dense gray fur, she peeked over the top of the canine’s head at her backlit phone screen, juggled in her other hand. Stupidly, foolishly waiting.

Blue’s head tilted, curious about the response he offered. Only to frown again at the following insistence. “I don’t think it is…” She only ever shied away from others. From anything that would be weaponized against her. That skittishness seemed to ebb away, though, around him. Again, there was something about all of this that made her feel understood in a way she was unfamiliar with.[break][break]

“You…like that?” Warmth flared under her skin again in spite of herself. Blue forced a scoff of laughter and looked away even as he babbled on about not knowing what he was thinking or saying. Figures. “You must be crazy to like all that.” Quit trying? As if she tried much to begin with. But still—who would willingly choose to enjoy someone’s barbed edges? Weirdly, bizarrely, it made her heart stutter. Maybe she should lay off the energy drinks.[break][break]

She watched him stand, and something close to disappointment ghosted across her expression before it was hidden away again. A fresh drink was passed across the bar top to her. She wasn’t going anywhere fast, it seemed. “Okay.” She eyed his clever smile, and tried to meet it with something sour and withering. “Like hell I’d do that.”[break][break]

What had happened in the small window of time that made her upset to see him go? No more than a month ago, she would’ve welcomed his departure. She would’ve sent him off with a middle-fingered salute, even. Now, she sat here watching his retreating back, unaware of the forlorn expression and burning cheeks that refused to dissipate from her face now that he was no longer looking her way.

Richard was looking for another creature to sink STEEL CLAWS into. The galarian meowth skittered around until he uncovered a swinub. The first squeal from the little pig drew Blue’s attention, though, and she quickly threw a pokeball before the feline caused too much havoc. It was no more than a distraction from the tumult turning over inside of her. Was he mad at her?[break][break]

The sharp response made her flinch—something she covered by turning away to pick up the pokeball as it rolled to a stop in the snow. It didn’t make sense. She thought this would be a relief for him. Make her less of a burden. The red in her eyes sharpened as she felt flickers of hurt and annoyance. “Well sorry for trying to do a good thing for once.”[break][break]

But it was like she’d said at the bar—she wasn’t good or kind of compassionate. And she definitely wasn’t any good at making attempts to do anything reflecting those qualities. This only confirmed it.[break][break]

Standing straight again, a hand rose to tuck the scarf tighter around her face. It masked her frown, but not the pinch of her eyebrows. “…thanks.” Why did that feel more like a dismissal? Why did that sting? Blue huffed, warring with her words. “Now, it won’t be…a conflict of interest. To be around me.”

Hunting Pokémon is so out of style…couldn’t be that! Blue can’t say she’s really one to retreat into nature for things like this.

She snorts, the methodical process of testing the wraps pausing as she glances up without fully lifting her head. The sharp hook of a slight smirk is just visible at the corner of her mouth. “You always make a habit to try and sound as sagely as possible?”[break][break]
