The vessel was riddled now with the annoyances from both Rangers, and though Rocket had managed to start patching it up, it was not going without its own hitches. As Genevieve felt confident now that things turned in their favor, the radio conversation with Josh has her turn Ulysses and make some distance. With the sound of sirens and police boats, their job was done.[break][break]

But Josh wasn't doing too well, and Genny feels responsible.[break][break]

"Understood. Making my way to you. Stay conscious as long as you can while I look for anyone on the ships with a medical Pokemon." That wasn't going to be hard. Hell, even medical supplies would be enough to at least stave off the problems.[break][break]

By time Genny meets with him again, she pats down Ulysses, and looks over him. "Any luck on that poison?" She didn't have a Heal Bell Pokemon herself. Unfortunate as it was.

She's not really perturbed by her mannerisms. Genevieve Cromwell just believes this is what she had to become. Galar broke the naive little girl who wanted to be a hero, and left in its place a hardened veteran who would achieve that. She became what was needed to survive in a war torn world, and even if it was a fading memory, it didn't stop.[break][break]

In truth, that little, naive girl was still in there. But she sharpened her wits, her senses. She studied, she exercised. She fulfilled her potential.[break][break]

"Don't worry about it."[break][break]

It was hard to fly in the weather, and Genny wouldn't blame him for it. Out of his control. He could have been earlier or later, and she'd have reacted the same. There's no text message that asked how he was.[break][break]

Zagreus, namely, whined more near Lam, but the scratches did something to stave off his worries. He could surely fix her up, right? This guy was close, if he recalled! With a tail wag, he barks towards Genevieve, as Lam moves to catch up.[break][break]

"After the dog protection mission, these caves started opening up around Hoenn. After reading about a big event way back when from mission dossiers, I found out one of the beasts... Necrozma." It was just easier to explain it like that, as she continued. Why explain about Galar? What else was there to say? "That Necrozma was fighting against a beast known as Eternatus during the mission. Turns out, the League found out from inside the Ultra Deep Sea, the same one we went to with Ikarus Rook and my ex, that it's the inside of Eternatus. Which means, when we went in there, we were inside a beast."[break][break]

To be honest, she's been more attentive as of late...[break][break]

So she continues, pushing a hand through her shorter orange hair. "We're here to scout, ensure a safe route for exploration and to assist the research team at a later date while they excavate." She shoots Lam a smile. And it's anything but pleasant. It's not her friendly, sunnyside up smile. It's lifeless. Hazel eyes have no love behind her upturned lips.[break][break]

It was like the trauma had finally just broken her. This was not Genny. Not anymore.

Miss Uehara took that challenge seriously! Watching her break off into a sprint had the four foot eleven senior ranger speed up herself, matching the speed. Though her muscles weren't quite as built, or quite so pronounced as back in Galar's little dream, but the muscle memory remains. Stamina may be lower, but not by much. Muscle memory was a powerful thing.[break][break]

She was adept at this, and clearly better than Genny could have ever hoped for. The dossier on her hadn't had enough for the ranger to make any assumptions, but this training session was exemplary![break][break]

While Orville and Wright were behind, it wasn't by a lot, and with Wander and Hazel leading the show, it was Eua, Puck, and Wander who were really pushing the boundaries. The rock dog would not be bested, and she made sure it was known. Every loop around a tree, every weave around the bend, she would make it in turn. At one point, in an act of defiance to her floating rivals, she began to utilize her own moves. She can't run up a tree. But what she can do, is conjure little rocks with STEALTH ROCK, and make tiny footholds for herself to run up a tree like a spiral staircase. She shoots Eua a glance, proud she was keeping up. Puck too, for that matter. Little Wander was crafty.[break][break]

The first lap ends once against in front of Mauville, as Genny takes a moment, jogging in place, to wipe away the sweat lacing her skin, and turns to Shion.[break][break]

Some small talk to break-up the training.[break][break]

"So. Miss Uehara. You're Hoenn-born, right?" It was something she recalled reading in the file, but the file may have been wrong. Better to get that information directly from the source. "I've only been here a little. Still hasn't sunk in yet."[break][break]

They can talk as they run. She lets Shion set the pace for this lap.

Wow, Shion was running with that pack on? Genevieve took notice to that. Genny liked running, keeping the cardio up. It helped her figure, and ensured her own athletic capability, but it was impressive to see her matching with little struggle, despite the josling pack behind her.[break][break]

Hazel ran with both arms moving to and fro, and little Orville kept carrying Wright and keeping pace with them, though short stumpy legs meant that Orville would never match Hazel and Autonoe, who impressively following suit.[break][break]

Wander was ahead of the girls though, following the movements of Eua from down below. Her eyes were constantly darting to, fro, up, down. Every tree she spun around, each branch, she'd return it in kind by doing laps around trees, hopping onto trees and using them as a means to jump further before tucking and rolling. It matched the curved drill beak spirals. But a dog was no bird, and while she kept up wonderfully, she was not Eua. Maybe as serious as Eua, but no way near that serious.[break][break]

Puck was doing well too, practicing multi-directional movement. Levitating Pokemon had all the luck, and as Hazel attempted follow suit, he decided to be a gremlin, and ROLLOUT to gain some distance. Yeah, Puck was a set of keys, but he had the sonic speed, even if it kicked up mud.[break][break]

It's about the halfway mark of the first lap, reaching the edge of Verdanturf Town, when Genevieve turns to Shion. Impressed, thoroughly so as she wipes a bead of sweat from her face.[break][break]

"Hot today. We're just getting started though. Still good for it?" It's honest concern. Senior Rangers needed to at least be on it for their juniors, right? That's what Genny would be, for the moment. "Let's see if you can pick up the pace."[break][break]

The second half of the first lap was much faster. This was when the sweat really was going to come in. Pace the self, and the gains would be great.[break][break]

She liked Miss Uehara. She was actually enjoying herself.

Water Types followed Genevieve downwards with Ulysses, her hazel eyes filling with confidence. Find the undertow, and ride it. She had control over the Dewgong, and as she would feel the undercurrent begin to pull and move, Genevieve threw her head back. Multiple Water Types were giving chase.[break][break]

She smirks beneath the ocean, eyes burning of the salty world around, as she cracks the reins, and has the Dewgong follow it. The Water Types gave chase, until she pulls the rein upwards. Straight up. Riding gave her more control, and while the Tentacruel, the Barraskewda, and the Veluza were forced to go with the flow due to their own lack of riders, the Jellicent would not be so easily handled. Which is why, as they broke the surface, Genny felt the splash of water, Pumpkin King comes flying to the surfaced, gasping for air Trainer, with the ghost following behind.[break][break]

Their eyes meet. And with them rushing back to the ship, Pumpkin King fires off a SHADOW BALL, slapping into the translucent little jelly king, forcing them back.[break][break]

All of that came to a stop, when one of them holds the captured Chespin, Hazel, up by the neck, and the little Chespin unconscious and bloodied.[break][break]

"Return your Pokemon, or the Chespin dies. Call off your partner too."[break][break]

Genevieve's face isn't even disturbed... but Hazel wasn't going to die. She moves fingers to her face. Comms now speaking. "Ranger Devlin... they want us to lay down. Or they'll kill my Chespin." Her hazel eyes are filled with a cruel, hateful determination now.[break][break]

In a very fun little sleight of hand though, her other Pokeball is underneath Ulysses. Venus comes out, hanging from the Dewgong. Readying up...[break][break]

"I'm not stopping till they're behind bars." Cold and calloused, she was ready to give everything to put Rocket under.[break][break]

In a flash, Hazel is gone. Now in the water, thanks to the TELEPORT of the little Ralts.[break][break]

"Distracted in full, and could use the back-up." She returns the unconscious Chespin. They were just getting started.[break][break]

She cracks the reins, and Ulysses is back to full speed, a Ralts and a Pumpkaboo at the ready at a moments notice. Tiny Pokemon, her stronger suit it seemed... that is, until the brilliant white light envelops the tiny Ralts, and with them riding, the now-Kirlia'd Venus pushes her hand through her locks. Oh yeah.[break][break]

This was getting good.

Party girl from college, and she's feeling sick to her stomach, but the fact that Isaac pulled her hair back before the barf comets dropped like a meteors raining from the sky. Now, on the ground, and giving her own resolution, she feels her head still swimming, and swimming it most certainly did as she feels dizzy.[break][break]

Isaac's words were sweet. And the lesson is clear. Don't let this world break her. Don't let life break her. Keep the lights on. And though she wants to refute, she doesn't.[break][break]

Her head was swimming still, but she gets to her feet, as resolute as she can. Drunken and dazed, but not broken. She wiped at her face, the tears shed, the pain held up. Bending, but unbroken. That's Genevieve Cromwell. It was a shift in demeanor, true. Well...[break][break]

What were the positives of Galar? Few as they were, she had become self-sufficient. She forced herself to learn how to cook. How to shoot a bow. How to play an instrument. How to clean up her space. Her apartment was practically unrecognizable and clean, something that her fallen family would never praise. She learned how to be independent. She learned that while her heroes weren't there, she could be that.[break][break]

She learned she was enough.[break][break]

"It... I won'Izzy." she cries out, and though she smiles, it will never be what it used to be. Crumbled paper can't be perfect again.[break][break]

But. She wasn't a little girl who would let the world beat her. Not again.

Ah. There he was.[break][break]

There's a small smile, but it is a poor imitation of the girl that once was there. Years of trauma, compacted into a dimming of the sun she once held as her heart. Now? It was like the clouds kept blocking it, with a sunshower being what she had now. All her energy.[break][break]

"Lam. You're late." The tone was a lot different than it usually was. Instead of sugar, spice, and everything nice, it's guarded, expired sweetness. It's still there, like an echo on the breeze, but it's been aged through. Like she were ten years older.[break][break]

She turns towards the cave, and enters. "Come on, Lam." No Lammy? Yeah. Something was up. Her hair did not look evenly cut. It was a little messy, honestly. No... a lot. Quite messy. But the look on her face said it all.[break][break]

She didn't care anymore.[break][break]

Pumpkin King and Vanilla Ice would follow Genny without a word, but Zagreus the Growlithe moved close, pushing his snout to Lam. His big canine eyes just gave him the look. That she wasn't herself.[break][break]

He wanted his person back. He began to whine.

It's another night she's found herself drinking herself half to death. This time though, it's so much fucking worse. Because after Isaac Merlo and her had their talk, the next morning, in her hangover, she was promoted. Promoted. From Cadet all the way to Senior Ranger. A little consolation prize for a job well done. A dream that now confirmed that her becoming a hardass and closing herself off had its merits to reaching the top.[break][break]

It made her sick. She loved Lady Bloom, Ms. Clean, Dr. Rhythm, and Cardi B. All of them, equally. And all they are now... are stepping stones.[break][break]

"Ano'er shot." Another shot poured. Another one down the hatch. At this rate, alcoholism might start to become a problem. Two nights of hangovers in a row, on a work night. Everything is so fucking messy now. But she is thinking about going back out there despite it. She's thinking of losing another of her Pokemon. And it isn't her own disdain for the war that brings her down.[break][break]

It's fear.[break][break]

If she sabotages her career, she can fix this. If she just drinks enough, they'll not want her to be a Ranger anymore, right? It's not like her heroes even notice her. It's not like she has anyone to stop her. And she doesn't.[break][break]

"An'er sho't." She's slurred in speech. Hazel eyes, wanting to be rescued. Saved. Held.[break][break]

Little does she know, the sun will rise soon enough.

Many Pokeballs come into the sea, and with it, a whole slew of new problems to consider. Tentacruel, Jellicent, Barraskewda and Veluza, all of them surround her. That's exactly what Genny wanted. All eyes on me. And with a crack of the reins, she's throwing herself into harm's way. A headbet with an aqua jet, carrying them to the skewer.[break][break]

It's good that they're so focused too. Josh would do his part. He had to. It was a hold-out, and they just needed to get one vessel down. At that point, it isn't a complete failure. But a cruel Poison Stinger comes for her, blocked only from lethality thanks to the Safeguard Ulysses had made, because Genny felt the stinger hit to her chest. She was bleeding a bit.[break][break]

She sits to the side, and releases her second Pokemon. Pumpkin King pops out, and with it, Genevieve's quick to the next move. "Seed Bomb around." And with it, the Pumpkaboo, that can float and levitate, begins to fire off little seed bombs, popping them one every Water Type looking their way, as she whispers to Ulysses...[break][break]

"Find the current. Then. Let them flow with it. You'll need to be on your game." And then with a held breath, the duo dive. The Water Types come with it.[break][break]

Hazel the Chespin found his own issues, as he began smashing into parts of the engine room with Rollout, constantly smacking into pipes and bending metal in unusual ways, before those traps began to take effect. Unfortunately for the little chipmunk, he immediately found himself taken into a net, hoisted in, and unable to do anything, as he makes noises. Only to grin.[break][break]

Nets aren't gonna hold the chipmunk down. Pin Missile, baby. Right inside of the engine room. Nets can't stop the spikes, but a bludgeoning tool can knock the poor little chipmunk out.[break][break]

Now Rocket has leverage.

There's a darker side to this. The unfortunate truth, the fact of the matter is, Genny had considered something in her mind awhile back. The edge was right here, and crossing it meant there was no going back. She hangs quietly off the side of the railing...[break][break]

And stares down.[break][break]

Light and dark were two sides to a coin. But they were concepts. Constructs at best. Genny had lived in that light. But the other coin was never something she ever thought she'd have to confront. She didn't want to. But the torment and anguish she felt has her teeter, and it has her totter, and it has her look at that edge again.[break][break]

Thing is though. The abyss doesn't scare her. In all honesty, she's not even worried about that edge, because it never occurs to her. She never knew it was there, and it never registered as an option.[break][break]

Dr. Rhythm wouldn't want that.[break][break]

Her sobs though were for those who fell into that abyss. Those gone. Those who hurt her. She bled for that pain, and what did she have to show for it? Little to nothing but memories. What makes it worse... is how it was getting harder to remember Dr. Rhythm. Lady Bloom. Ms. Clean. And Cardi B. She knew she had them. But it was like... blank spots were forming in her mind.[break][break]

Galar was fading. Slowly, but it was.[break][break]

"Izzy." She wipes at her eyes finally, runny mascara and broken dreams felt now on her arm. "I-"[break][break]

And she's over the edge. Not in a bad way, no. But in a disgustingly appropriate way. Because she had never drunk that much ever. And now her body was telling her to eject. And it wasn't a particularly pleasant sound. But as it finished...[break][break]

She reels back, re-adjusting her balance before falling backwards onto the pavement. "I nee'ed that." She wipes at her face, and turns towards Isaac, tears still dotting her eyes. "People suc'kall the time... I wanna bea'my heroes."[break][break]

"They don'get to win. I do. When I becom' hea'ranger." Genny's cheeks were red.[break][break]

Well.[break][break]

Not all the light got beaten out of her. There's still some fight in Genevieve Cromwell.

A younger Genevieve would have never said that, but years of this shit, being said to herself over and over really takes it all home. She was a pity, right now, and as Isaac prepared to retort, she nearly threw her hand up to stop him. But she didn't. If she was a raging inferno, his words were like ice. A clash against one another.[break][break]

Then.[break][break]

He turns it around. He pinpoints his own baggage. How his father had beaten it into him he wasn't worth anything. Nothing. A stark difference to loving parents. Years of turmoil, running away to become a burnout. No longer a burden. And something about that resonates harder. She felt she was spiraling. But somehow... his words hung in the air. They hung over her head... some digital doppelganger took everything and died...[break][break]

... his expression softens, and now he wants to save her. Started letting people in, and now he's fine. And on his command, she looks at the bottle.[break][break]

Half-empty or half-full.[break][break]

She slaps her face, her hands now making two red hand marks on her face, as she pulls herself through some level of sobriety. What can be said to argue it? Could she even pity herself with a speech like that?[break][break]

There was one way.[break][break]

"I used to let people in ALL the time." She glares daggers, wielded and danced with. "Would they lemme in? Would ANYBO'Y help m'though?" It's so twisted, the corkscrew she was on right now. For one moment, she felt like she could work through this. "Every time... I got your letters... felt like summ wun cared." Her lip trembles, and her eyes sting, and now she's wiping her face, makeup running down.[break][break]

"It wasn't enough. You know ho'many times I cried myself to sleep?"[break][break]

Her head was on the table now. Her heart? Busted up.[break][break]

"I did pick m'self up. Cuz I didn'eed'em then. An' I don't nee'em now." She gets up from the table. "I'ma-" She walks out of the little tiki bar... out to a railing that overlooked the beach, so she didn't make a scene.[break][break]

She was crying though.
