They were both plain Janes, him and the other—with equally plain names, too! Perfect.

“Call me Jack, everyone does—and good luck to you!” he continued from his side of the battlefield.

All too soon the ringing noise that signified the start of the match went off; and the Absol got up and off from her position; eyeing the Scyther carefully and getting ready with a Swords Dance in case they came flying too close.

For it was clear this Pokémon she was facing—was a veteran of battle as much as she was.

He never realized he’d feel like a wrung sponge before the day was over—just how many people were out here today?

Thank hell they were allowed to heal between rounds, so there was that.

So far, so good though?!

His Absol had never felt fresher. (Or prettier, for that matter.)

Now that they were out here in the ring, who was he fighting next?

Today, hopefully, was not going to be as disastrous as it had been the previous.

Yesterday had boiled down to sheer dumb luck; whereas today—hopefully, some of that ‘beginner’s luck’ edge wasn’t going to leave his side.

(Honestly, he could not understand why some people loved doing this kind of thing! Was it because he preferred to live a simple life instead?)

Either way, his Absol stretched on his side of the field while he waited for his next opponent to show up.

And there it was, the starting bell that signified it was time for them to fight, fight, fight!

The Absol quickly eyed her opponent for the day; before deciding to size up first—with an opponent that speedy, it was best to counter them at the point where they had to recover before moving again!

How was she going to do that? Simple—

She kept her eyes trained on her opponent as she then prepared herself with a Swords Dance; in case the other came to close.

“Sheer luck got me all the way out here,” he began as he scratched the back of his head.

Truly, it was luck fueling him at this point. What even was this insanity going on anymore? He didn’t know, and his Absol didn’t care, either.

Fact of the matter was… he was out here for the experience, and that was that!

“Good luck to you!” he added, and he was much tempted to finish the rest of the sentence in the back of his head—however he realized that it would’ve been in bad taste all things considered, so he left it at that.

Too many matches…

Frankly, he was glad someone else was keeping track of who won and who lost. He didn’t care for any of that shit; he was out here for the experience and just going along with whoever, whatever the flow wanted!

(Theatrics aside, he was starting to feel rather exhausted, but knew that they had a long way to go.)

His next match of the day—whoa. Okay, so now he was pitted up against someone he knew.

“Even I’m surprised to find myself this far,” he cackled as he watched his Absol get into position. “Thankfully it’s not a gauntlet of successive matches. Who or what can survive so many battles in a row is just. Unreal.”

He sighed, before pinching the bridge of his nose.

“Let’s scrap!”

Thank the seven hells there was healing after every match, because who in their right minds would do this in rapid succession?

(Surely there were some out there who were ambitious enough to try that?!)

Either way, his Absol was raring to go again, and clambered onto the stage first, with him following right afterward.

His eyebrows went up at the sight of their Pokémon opponent on the other side of the field, because whoa, what was that?

“Cordy, you got this. No backing down, now!” he cheered his own Pokémon on.

The belated realization of ‘only one Pokémon per contestant’ was starting to sink in, and boy was he screwed. If he’d known better, he’d have entered with Emm the Gardevoir instead!

However, there was no backing down now, so here he was… ready to slog through everything head-on with Cordy the Absol, who was literally raring for a chance to prove herself.

“Hey there,” he called out once he’d arrived (and his Absol had taken position on their side of the field).

“How’s your day been? You can call me Jack.”

There, nice and easy, to diffuse the tension.

How many matches had he signed up for? In the blur of so many, he’d already forgotten—all he knew was that after three hits, the first to fall lost…

Who knew what the dice would hold in store for him?! Either way…

Knowing better than to underestimate an opponent, his Absol hopped up onto his side of the ‘arena’, before tilting her head in greeting at the Froakie.

“Name’s Jack, and did anyone ever tell you that a piledriver hurts when taken full to the face?” he cracked, before bracing himself for whatever insanity was to come.

“You can call me Jack. Everyone does,” he greeted back; although there was also that feeling of déjà vu hanging around the other man—why did he look familiar, too?!

Unlike most who may have forgotten about the time they spent in the alternate ‘pocket’ universe of a backwards Galar, Jack could unfortunately recall most everything—even so. It was the curse of being a lorekeeper, sometimes.

You had to remember every single damned thing—and that alternative Galar experience was definitely one he wouldn’t easily forget!

Him and his Absol eyed the Poochyena across them; however he knew better than to underestimate another Pokémon, especially if it was a smaller one.

“Good luck.”

And maybe, just maybe, he’d pull through somehow?

“Well, you know how there’s always this one poor shepherd that’s getting memed when it comes to their flock getting lost? I can’t help but think that’s me,” he laughed as he took the invitation to join her on the bench.

“Well, see, I’m that shepherd, plus my Yamper is all but useless—maybe I’ll introduce you to Sumi another time,” he added a few moments later.

He thought he saw a ball of white escaping, before he whistled once in that direction.

“Ger! Keep an eye on your sibling for me, will you?” he asked the grumpy Wooloo who by now was finished chomping on some grass. “Thanks.”

Returning his attention to his companion, he then leaned back against said park bench.

“I travel where the wind takes me. If anyone needs some kind of herding help, well, I’m here to fill out that niche.”
