As guests filtered past her into the casino, Yumi finally let herself breathe.[break][break]

Preparations had been completed with time to spare before the party's start. She had given her speech without stumbling on her words. She hadn't even let the sight of parker jones in the crowd catch her by surprise.[break][break]

Yumi had chosen to wear an off-the-shoulder gown of pale lavender and shimmering emerald, the colors blending together beautifully across the diaphanous fabric. Gems like the scales of Vivillon wings adorned her dress at the hem, waist, and bust; more were sewn into her form-fitting sleeves.[break][break]

Completing her outfit were glittering faerie wings in hues that matched her gown. They fanned out behind her, their size preventing anyone from stepping too close to her and treading upon her skirts.[break][break]

Yumi nodded at Hitoshi Inoue, who had been at her side nearly the whole day. "Thank you," was all she said before letting him go.[break][break]

Before she could sweep into the casino with her guests, however, Mei Liu approached her to give compliments and congratulations. Yumi beamed at her friend and returned the hand squeeze. "Thank you," she said, preening. "Your dress is delightful. Very 'you'."[break][break]

At the mention of Hitoshi, however, Yumi rolled her eyes. Mei had once suggested there might be something romantic between the two, but Yumi had put that insinuation to rest.[break][break]

"Don't you start that up again," she warned Mei, though there was no bite behind the bark. In fact, a ghost of a smile touched her lips. "Enjoy the party, hmm? I'm going to mingle."[break][break]

With a final squeeze of Mei's hand, Yumi entered the casino, accompanied by her Mimikyu. People were already engaging in conversation, trying their hand at gambling, and ordering drinks.[break][break]

A pleased smile spread across Yumi's face as she leisurely wove her way through the crowd. Her dark eyes took in every face. Some guests were easy to recognize as Rockets she'd met before; others were strangers to her.[break][break]

One of the former sat at a craps table in the poorest excuse of a costume she'd ever seen.[break][break]

"Having fun?" she asked mitchel kane as she took up the dice and gave them a roll. "I didn't expect you to be the kind of person who'd show up to a fae-themed party at a casino."[break][break]

When Yumi agreed to assume ownership of Casino Starlight, she had an incomplete understanding of how busy she was about to become. But between restoring the casino to its former glory and redoing what she felt had been lacking before, she had little time for anything else. She even had to hire a manager for her social media accounts just so she could continue posting content.[break][break]

And through it all, she thrived. Yumi had never felt more alive — or more powerful. Every executive decision she made for the good of the casino, she made for the good of her future.[break][break]

But it was true that as the work piled up, so did the stress. The sore muscles in her neck and shoulders were signs she needed a break. So when Hitoshi stomped into the casino carrying a massive watermelon, declaring it was time for their annual suikawari, she took the opportunity.[break][break]

Passing her tablet to her casino manager, Yumi gave him brief instructions, then informed him she would take the rest of the afternoon off. Once he was off to do her bidding, she turned back to Hitoshi, a rare smile of genuine affection on her lips.[break][break]

"Good timing. And it's just the right weather for a little beach fun."[break][break]

Grabbing her sweater, she started to lead them out the front door of the casino. Sootopolis' beach paled in comparison to that of other cities in Hoenn, but it was big enough for a bit of relaxation.[break][break]

What was the point of employing a personal stylist for "enormous events" if one did not like their work enough to use them for more minor ones? That seemed odd to Yumi. And if Summer was so particular that she would learn how to do everything herself — not just clothing but hair and makeup — then what was her real reason for offering the position to Yumi?[break][break]

The black-haired woman scanned the business card with dark eyes that revealed nothing of her thoughts. Her smile never wavered as she stowed it away into her clutch purse. "I'll certainly think on it, Miss Corleone," she said.[break][break]

Between friends, Summer's question about shops would have been innocent. But considering the context and the cutthroat nature of fashion, Yumi considered her words carefully.[break][break]

"Oh, just little boutiques here and there. When it comes to this business, you have to cast a wide net. Thankfully, the quality in this city's fashion district is quite high. The competition is, too. It's quite exhilarating."

Not the Porygon2 they're looking for? Yumi frowned, hoping she wouldn't have to run herself ragged chasing these little Pokémon on Team Rocket's behalf. At least she'd chosen the right shoes for the job, with short heels instead of her usual tall ones.[break][break]

"Kibin, take care of it," Yumi instructed her Lilligant. The Spinning Pokemon smacked the Porygon2 with an AXE KICK, knocking it unconscious.[break][break]

Xenon and her Gengar had already exited that office to search the next one. Yumi followed, trying to remember the exact features of their specific target that distinguished it from the others of its kind.[break][break]

"It could be anywhere. Is there a way to find out exactly where it is?" she asked, hoping for a positive answer.

They resumed walking across the second floor, Yumi at Enzo's side. Beyond ornate doors, they found the casino proper, its furnishings similarly covered. Inside, everything was dark, the intricate ceiling lights all cold.[break][break]

Though Yumi knew the light switches were not in reach in case a drunk patron thought to turn them off, she still glanced at the nearby walls to look for them. She found none. They stood alone in the dark, surrounded by furniture in repose.[break][break]

"It would be a waste to repurpose it into something else. I imagine millions of PD were poured into this building, from each gambling table to the chandelier in the foyer," she answered, her mind churning as it weighed profit versus loss.[break][break]

She reached out and touched a cloth-covered table. "Rocket should reopen it. Find someone with the business acumen to restore the casino to its former glory — no, someone who can take it to new heights."[break][break]

Yumi turned to her employer, the start of her trademark Seviper smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Perhaps you, Mr. de Luca? Is that why we're here?"

Yumi Hasegawa is inviting one and all to a glamorous costume party at Casino Starlight, inspired by A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. Costumes themed after faeries and the feywild are encouraged. Bring your Fairy and Dark-type Pokémon with you, too! Come for dinner and a show, music and dancing, and of course, gambling![break][break]

WELCOME TO CASINO STARLIGHT

Night has fallen upon Sootopolis, and as you make your way through the crowded boulevards, the towering skyscraper of Casino Starlight beckons you like a siren's song. However means by which you arrive, you come upon its front steps and enter a magnificent, dazzling foyer. Marble floors glow with the light of twinkling chandeliers. Curving staircases lead up to the casino itself.[break][break]

Waiting at the top of the stairs is none other than Yumi Hasegawa, Casino Starlight's new owner. She gazes down at the arrivals with an air of imperious elegance, as if she were born for this moment. Dressed in a gossamer gown of pale lavender and shimmering emerald, she addresses the growing crowd:[break][break]

"Welcome, everyone, to Casino Starlight! Thank you all for attending this grand affair, this celebration of summer."[break][break]

Her voice is light, full of charm and honey. Her smile is a smirk, enigmatic and impish.[break][break]

"To give you an idea of how you shall be entertained this evening, the casino will be open all night long, so please play to your heart's content. When dinner is ready, you will dine while watching a show put on by local performers. And afterward, there will be music for dancing, desserts, and fireworks to close out the night."[break][break]

The doors at the top of the stairs are opened by staff in immaculate tyrian uniforms. Yumi holds out a hand, the gems of her long sleeve sparkling in the light.[break][break]

"Come into my midsummer night's dream. Drink, eat, and play to your heart's content!"[break][break]

You flow with other guests through the open doors, and what a sight inside! Table games of all kinds, rows upon rows of slot machines, and televisions showing Pokémon battles bombard your eyes. Uproarious laughter, shouts of dismay, and the buzz of conversation fill your ears. Bartenders pour all manner of drinks at several bar stations, promising delights for your tongue that will unshackle the mind and open the wallet.[break][break]

The hug and twirl caught Yumi completely off guard, and she wobbled slightly when Xenon let her go. But with a brush of her hand against the front of her blouse, Yumi's characteristic smirk graced her face. Xenon had properly complimented her outfit — points in her favor.[break][break]

"Thank you, thank you," the black-haired woman said, noting the casual comments suggesting her partner's considerable ego. "One can't show up anywhere looking less than impeccable, you know."[break][break]

She peered up at Devon Corp's fourth floor, then at the phone screen shoved into her face. "Simple enough. Let's go."[break][break]

They walked at a brisk pace into the building, flashing their badges when security stopped them. A quick body scan and walk through metal detectors confirmed they were unarmed with mundane weapons. After signing in and writing down the Pokémon species they had brought with them, a guard escorted them up to the fourth floor.[break][break]

"Please go back downstairs," Yumi said to the middle-aged man who looked like he belonged on a couch, not in a uniform. They had just stepped out of the elevator, and distant shouts of harassed employees could be heard from down the hallway. "It may be dangerous, and we don't want any injury to befall anyone employed by our clients."[break][break]

He seemed puzzled by her high vocabulary, so she waved him away with a hand while releasing her Hisuian Lilligant with another. Then she opened the nearest door and peered inside. Flashing lights indicated the presence of a Porygon2.[break][break]

"There's one in here!" Yumi exclaimed, barging in, her Lilligant following her.

"Of course," Yumi said, smiling widely at the thought of a leisurely tour through the quiet casino. She matched her pace to Enzo's as they ascended the curving staircase. "And it really is a pity. I loved walking through the halls with the rooms full of light and noise. I admit, I may have felt a little nostalgic about it."[break][break]

Of course she'd told her employer about her past experience in casinos before coming to Hoenn. Though she'd never been in charge of one, she'd familiarized herself with some of the responsibilities while shadowing the men her family had employed to run theirs.[break][break]

Having so much power at one's hands, running such intricate and demanding machinery as a casino, had sent a thrill through her younger self.[break][break]

Yumi joined Enzo at the railing and gazed down at the grand foyer and its many doors leading outside. Briefly, she imagined standing in a gorgeous, floor-length dress as she surveyed a throng of enthralled guests.[break][break]

"I think it was foolish for Mr. Decker to leave without appointing a successor," she admitted, her tone matter-of-fact. "Team Rocket received a considerable amount of revenue from the casino's profits. Without a succession plan, no one knew who to turn to for instruction, and now they've lost several months' worth of income."

Devon Corp headquarters was a formidable building. It towered over its neighbors, the bright sunlight of late May bringing the color out of its stony exterior.[break][break]

Yumi stared up at its face with considerable interest. She had not had the pleasure of stepping into Devon Corp before, nor had she met anyone in the infamous Stone family. And anyway, FERNANDO SILPH now owned the company.[break][break]

Not that she had any reason to think about him. She doubted she'd find him in Devon Corp's halls that day. And she had a job to do.[break][break]

Yumi turned her dark gaze down the street, keeping an eye out for her partner: one Xenon Antheil. While she waited, she adjusted the badge on the lanyard around her neck.[break][break]

Forged back at Team Rocket's headquarters, it identified her as a member of a cybersecurity squad called to assist with a certain Porygon problem.[break][break]

Finally, Yumi spotted the other woman. "There you are," she said when Xenon was near. "You're Xenon? I'm Yumi." She held out her hand for a shake.

The cold night breeze hit Yumi as soon as she stepped out of the club, but the chill was welcome. She breathed deeply, gulping in great lungfuls of air as if she'd just been freed from a suffocating cage. Her dark gaze swept over the street, looking for Hitoshi.[break][break]

"Yumi, wait! I'm sorry!"[break][break]

She whirled around, face screwed up in fury, at the flash of pink hair as Parker appeared from the crowd.[break][break]

"Sorry is not going to cut it. I tried to make it easy for you to leave, Parker, but fuck me for caring about you, huh? Why couldn't you just take a hint?" Yumi snapped.

"You flatter me. Surely your personal stylist is doing amazing work already, though," Yumi said, indicating Summer's dress. And what other reason would the CEO of Lion Heart Trading Company wish to hire a fashionista? "But if you're going to fire them, well…"[break][break]

Yumi smirked, then grasped Summer's outstretched hand. But the gesture was less of a shake and more of a brief clasp. Born and raised with Johtonian traditions, the black-haired woman was not a fan of the Western handshake. It was far too masculine for her taste.[break][break]

"I will strive not to let you down, Miss Corleone," Yumi said with a light laugh, though in truth, she was not going to succeed for anyone's sake but her own. "With you in trade and me in fashion, we will undoubtedly have the world at our feet."[break][break]

A pretty comment. She knew the truth would be far more complicated, especially with men like FERNANDO SILPH at the helm of the region's economic powerhouses.[break][break]

"I'm interested in starting my own fashion line," Yumi answered honestly. She raised a manicured hand to the models strutting down the runway. "Between the glamor of haute couture and the stability of ready-to-wear pieces, I'd design my own collections and sell them through retail shops. I've already contacted a few boutiques in the Upper District."[break][break]

With a student's portfolio, of course. Yumi was still far from producing and selling clothing, as the process of designing her first collection would take some time. But Summer did not need to know that.

Yumi smirked, haughty and proud. She preened like a Quaquaval. "I made it. It's my final piece for the Advanced Sewing workshop I just finished."[break][break]

She nodded along as the woman shared her own thoughts and expectations, though she kept her eyes on the models walking the runway. Every so often, she made a mental note of the designer and line, prepared to look them up later once the show had ended.[break][break]

"I am," Yumi confirmed at the mention of her casino's previous owner. She had never met Killian Decker, but that hadn't mattered. Money was money.[break][break]

Her eyes did light up, however, when the woman introduced herself.[break][break]

"The Summer Corleone? My, I should be honored." The black-haired woman's voice was saccharine in its sweetness. "I've read about your recent achievements as CEO. You're an inspiration, you know? For women everywhere."[break][break]

Yumi fanned herself with the pamphlet for the show.[break][break]

"I hope to rival your success one day."

Yumi shook her head. "It's in the design of the sleeve. See how there's elastic? It hugs close to the body normally, but can stretch if I need to move my arms."[break][break]

Briefly, she showed the construction to the other woman.[break][break]

Then she turned her attention back to the runway, though she remained tuned in to listen to her companion. Yumi nodded, though the vagueness of the answer raised a flag of alarm within her.[break][break]

Who was this woman? Was she so new to the fashion scene she couldn't name a single famous label?[break][break]

"This is my first invitation," Yumi admitted, though neither her voice nor bearing showed any sign of shame for that fact. "But I am a huge fan of the House of Glaus, but I'm curious to see Primarina's upcoming collection."[break][break]

She paused to admire a particularly avant garde dress on the model passing them, then looked back at her conversation partner with open interest.[break][break]

"I'm Yumi Hasegawa, by the way." Perhaps the other woman knew of her from social media, but if not… "I own the Casino Starlight in Sootopolis."
