Slateport Fashion Week. Yumi had worked hard for months to earn a coveted invitation, both through her social media influence and her fashion design classes at Slateport University. Finally, she found herself sitting just alongside the runway, shoulder-to-shoulder with other members of Hoenn's celebrity elite.[break][break]

Unfortunately, Hitoshi Inoue hadn't received an invitation. Yumi had been forced to leave him outside the venue, so she'd suggested he find something to eat while he waited for the show to conclude.[break][break]

At that moment, it had yet to start. The crowd buzzed with soft conversation as pop music played softly in the background. Yumi's dark gaze scanned the room, memorizing the faces and outfits of everyone she could manage. She herself was dressed in a strapless black dress with voluminous, off-the-shoulder sleeves, tights, and kitten heels. A bright red clutch purse matched the accent color of her shoes.[break][break]

"Some people here look like they stepped out of a clothing chain's discount outlet," Yumi grumbled, only loudly enough for those seated on either side of her to hear. She glanced sidelong at one of them, a blue-haired woman with beautiful, two-toned eyes. At least her outfit was acceptable.[break][break]

"I'm right, right?" Yumi said to her with a smirk.

Despite the blood and gore on Hitoshi, his high spirits told Yumi that he was fine, too. She turned her attention to Cillian and silently directed her Hatterene to him with a gesture. Another LIFE DEW washed over the underboss and seeped into his wounds, his aching limbs.[break][break]

Noise from Temp's outrage drew Yumi's attention. Men's displays of aggression were nothing new to her, so while Hitoshi voiced his question, she merely stepped out of the house and its cloud of noxious smells. Once outside, she took a deep breath of fresh air, relieved.[break][break]

The men filed out of the house upon Cillian's command, and she joined them, her Pokémon flanking her. But before they had departed from the village, she cast one last look at the houses.[break][break]

Who had built them? And how come, though they looked made for human settlement, the inside had been empty — devoid of all the small details suggesting previous habitation?[break][break]

Before Yumi could even open her mouth again to speak, Temp rushed toward the nearest house and opened the door. Vines wrapped around his waist and yanked him inside. Alarmed, she shouted some choice expletives, but Hitoshi and Cillian were faster.[break][break]

Between the two of them, the Pokémon within — Victreebel, based on the bodies littering the floor — were decimated.[break][break]

Not willing to be seen as useless, Yumi released her Hatterene and approached Temp. "Here, some healing, just in case," she told him as Shinju used LIFE DEW on the reckless man.[break][break]

Then she peered through the doorway, dark eyes taking in the carnage. "Was that all of them?"

Yumi readily accepted Cillian's hand, not embarrassed in the slightest by her obvious fragility. She had not been trained for physicality but for cleverness and keen observation. Such traits were never a weakness.[break][break]

"I am, thank you. And thank you too, Mr. Quinn." The last part, she directed at Temp.[break][break]

Brushing the dirt off her skirt, she nodded her gratitude to the Lucario as well. Then she flashed Hitoshi a small, reassuring smile. She might have some superficial scratches and a bruised bum, but it was nothing for him to worry about.[break][break]

The group proceeded toward the village, picking their way around small ditches and large boulders. Eventually, they arrived at its edge. Bamboo had been cleared away to form a quiet sanctuary. The homes themselves were wooden, dark, and silent.[break][break]

Yumi did not like the way her skin crawled with foreboding. "Does it look safe to you?" she asked the men, who were clearly more keyed in to danger than she was.

The bamboo forest erupted with chaos. Flames from Hitoshi's Ceruledge and Cillian's Delphox lit up the immediate area and filled it with searing heat. Yumi stumbled backwards, trying to avoid getting burned.[break][break]

Unfortunately, she tripped on the same small object rooted into the ground that Temp's foot had touched. Balance lost, Yumi fell hard on her backside. "Fuck! Owwww!" she hissed, tears stinging her eyes.[break][break]

Shockingly, the object wailed, too.[break][break]

Yumi stared, her pain momentarily forgotten, as the thing — no, the baby Pokémon — emitted an unnatural cry. A sudden fluttering filled the air, like the wind rustling leaves. Or the crinkling of a thousand sheets of paper.[break][break]

Without warning, a swarm of small, white-and-red Pokémon appeared as if out of nowhere. Yumi could not possibly count how many. They collectively raised their tiny arms and attacked the group with NIGHT SLASH.[break][break]

The woman screamed, throwing her hands up to cover her face, just as her Seviper countered the swarm with GLARE.

The ideal ending to Yumi's night evaporated as soon as Parker's punch connected with the man's face. Parker's strength bowled him over into several other clubbers. Shouts and insults flew, clashing with the music. Drinks spilled.[break][break]

Yumi changed her mind. Fuck being calm.[break][break]

"Parker!" she screeched, livid. "What the fuck is wrong with you?!"[break][break]

Her hand leaped to her clutch, groping at the zipper in case she needed her Tsareena. She instinctively glanced around the club's interior, looking for Hitoshi Inoue, not remembering until seconds later that he was not in the building. But her bodyguard was somewhere outside, she knew. She could reach him in minutes.[break][break]

"Fuck you and fuck your friend!" the man Yumi had been flirting with spat as he recovered. "Should've known you weren't worth my time, bitch!"[break][break]

"Eat shit, asshole!" Yumi snapped back automatically. She whirled upon Parker. "And you! Don't fucking follow me!"[break][break]

With that, Yumi turned on her heel and shoved her way out of the club.

Yumi reached out, but she did not grab the drink from Parker. Instead, she grabbed Parker's wrist, a gentle pressure. Annoyance cut through Yumi as she observed the grin on her friend's face. In the flash of the club's lights, she recognized a threatened dog baring fangs.[break][break]

She smothered the emotion with care. Despite the liquor she had imbibed, she would not let her distaste destroy the thin thread of friendship that bound her to Parker. Yumi liked Parker, after all.[break][break]

"Parker, stop." Yumi's voice was clear, her words enunciated. "I've made up my mind. And as your friend, I want to make sure you get home safely, too."

Yumi listened carefully to Gavin's instruction — or Cillian's, as he called himself now. It didn't matter. He was still an underboss. Moreover, she had survived the horrible nature of the Ultra Deep Sea thanks to his leadership. He'd gained her respect from that alone.[break][break]

She peered through the bamboo. The thick forest of it reminded her of home, so she was unsurprised to catch a glimpse of buildings between the stalks. They looked like homes, part of a countryside village.[break][break]

"What about over there?" Yumi suggested, pointing. The buildings were close enough; their expedition group could reach them in fifteen minutes, assuming they continued to walk in a straight line. Naturally, obstacles might make the trip longer.[break][break]

While Lugia flew overhead, Yumi's Seviper slithered on the ground alongside the humans. Gesshoku's red eyes gleamed in the dark undergrowth, keeping watch for danger.

Jetto-chan. So that was the name of the man who wounded her dog. Yumi sat back in the carriage's seat, resolved to learn more about him. But she had time. Hitoshi had to recover first, and then he had to gain power. Strength, Pokémon, technology — she'd get her hands on whatever he needed.[break][break]

"You will," she confirmed. Her words were not said to reassure him; instead, they were a blessing.[break][break]

Go. Be crazy. Do what you must.[break][break]

As long as he continued to obey, of course, but she had full confidence in that.[break][break]

"Let's get some food for you when we get back to Slateport," Yumi said, taking out her phone to dial a restaurant for delivery. "And then you need to sleep."[break][break]

The Corviknight taxi would deposit them at her apartment, which was a better place for Hitoshi's recovery than his own residence. There, she could look after him until he was well enough to walk around on his own again — a small distraction from the harrowing thought that lurked at the back of her mind.[break][break]

Yumi shook her head, but not necessarily in answer to Hitoshi's question. Too many emotions churned within her, and she needed a moment to sift through them to understand the core of what truly bothered her.[break][break]

Eventually, she spoke up. "Everything is different here in Hoenn. Back home, we sat at the top, and no one could harm me because no one could harm you. But here…"[break][break]

A Corviknight cawed loudly from atop a carriage. They had reached the station. An attendant opened the door and set up a ramp so Hitoshi could be wheeled into the transport. Yumi paid for the trip, then stepped into the carriage and took the opposite seat.[break][break]

The great bird took off, lifting them into the air.[break][break]

"Here, you suffered these injuries," she continued, gesturing at Hitoshi. "Here, we don't have as much power. You and I both need to become stronger. I understand that now very clearly."[break][break]

Her dark eyes flashed and hardened with determination.[break][break]

"You'll kill him one day, won't you? The man who did this to you."

While Hitoshi laughed, Yumi did not, unable to see the humor in the situation. An unknown person had injured her dog this much, and though it seemed like Hitoshi would recover in due time, worry gnawed at her all the same.[break][break]

In the end, she decided to shake off the anxiety that threatened to build within her. Hitoshi was a capable man — no, a capable killer. This setback was minor. Temporary. In no time at all, he would be back in top shape.[break][break]

Yumi signaled for the Gallade to resume pushing the wheelchair.[break][break]

"You're right. From the reports I read on the way here, you caught the attention of the upper brass. They'll probably assign you to more important missions soon. And I have my own work I'm doing."

Yumi rolled her eyes at Sen's dramatics, but ultimately stepped aside and opened the door wider. "Get inside before you attract the neighbors' attention."[break][break]

The apartment was not grand — certainly not compared to the Hasegawa manor back in Goldenrod City — but it was roomy, with large windows, and decorated nicely. Yumi closed the door behind Sen once he entered, then made her way to the sitting area where a comfortable couch and armchair were arranged around a coffee table.[break][break]

She sat in the armchair, her Delcatty curling at her feet. Though her parents had taught her to provide hospitality to guests, they also taught her when to withhold it.[break][break]

Yumi gestured to the couch. "Sit. Tell me what's going on."

Yumi, too, felt relief as they left the hospital and made their way down the street to the Corviknight taxi station. She walked at a slow enough pace to accommodate his wheelchair, not at all considering that she should have fetched him one herself.[break][break]

"We did," she said, keeping her voice low so that other pedestrians couldn't eavesdrop. "We got our hands on the Seal Stone and brought it back to base."[break][break]

She glanced sidelong at Hitoshi. The sight of her bodyguard, always so capable and strong, bound up in bandages and a wheelchair filled her with a sense of dread. Reaching out, she put a hand on his Gallade's arm, a gesture for them to stop.[break][break]

"Did you kill them?" Yumi asked Hitoshi in a voice that was barely louder than a whisper. "The people who did this to you?"

Yumi nodded, oblivious to her employer's injury. Instead, her eyes traveled up the curve of the staircase toward the second floor as her mind remembered the grandeur of the casino while in use. She had only visited a few times in the past, sometimes for work and other times for pleasure, but she loved each time. The ritz, the glamor, the expense…[break][break]

She longed for the day when the casino could open again. Perhaps Enzo would allow her to work here instead of at the Nimbus, if he acquired ownership. While she liked the Nimbus — like the Starlight, it was also ritzy and glamorous, in its own way — casinos reminded her of home, in a way.[break][break]

Her family operated a number of gambling parlors back in Goldenrod City, after all.[break][break]

Finally, Yumi lowered her gaze to meet Enzo's. "Yes, thankfully. For you too, I hope?"
