Yumi heard Hitoshi's argument but wasn't paying attention. Her eyes took in his wounds, cleaned and dressed as they were, and the general state of his body. But it wasn't until he asked his question did tears prick her eyes.[break][break]

Her parents had raised her to bottle up her emotions and harden her heart. And for the most part, she'd been successful; few knew the parts of her that were too soft for the world in which she lived. They only knew her anger, her disdain, her amusement.[break][break]

But in that hospital room, Yumi's iron grip on her heart faltered. To save herself, she defaulted to her natural defense.[break][break]

"You really are an idiot," she scoffed, rising from the bed so she wouldn't have to look at him. Staring at a random object across the room, she willed her tears to go away. "How could you ask me that kind of question?"[break][break]

Of course I'd miss you, she thought, however. Who would I have left if you're no longer around?

Hitoshi spoke like a boy who'd just returned home from a day at the theme park. She couldn't help but smiling at him, but less to share his excitement and more as an expression of relief that he'd survived it all.[break][break]

He was merely her bodyguard, but she couldn't imagine losing him. Not after ten years.[break][break]

"I'm his sister," she told the nurse, lying despite her nature to be brutally honest. Sometimes lies could save lives, however, and they couldn't waste time lingering in that hospital. "His paperwork, please. Or you might find yourself looking for a new job elsewhere."[break][break]

She leveled an unnerving gaze at the nurse until the woman stuttered a confirmation and scampered away. As soon as the nurse had left, Yumi sat down on Hitoshi's hospital bed, her body sagging visibly with relief.[break][break]

"You idiot," she said to him, scowling even as she looked over his bandaged wounds. "How could you get this hurt?"

Stiletto heels click sharply against the linoleum floor of Dewford Town's main hospital — tiny in comparison to the ones in Lilycove and Slateport — as Yumi marched her way toward the front desk of the Emergency Department. Her Delcatty, Kumo, trotted at her side.[break][break]

"I'm here for Hitoshi Inoue," she told the frazzled, middle-aged woman, who turned to the computer to look up the name.[break][break]

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but we don't have anyone registered under that name here."[break][break]

Yumi knew that the little hospital was overwhelmed with the injured survivors of the defense of Dewford and Granite Cave, but she didn't care. Team Rocket's intel had reported that Hitoshi had been collected by the League and brought back here. She needed to get him out before the staff realized his allegiance.[break][break]

"5 feet 4 inches, long black hair, sword," she snapped. Recognition dawned in the woman's face, and she pointed toward the patient rooms, blurting out a room number as Yumi stalked off in that direction.[break][break]

She stormed into one of the larger rooms, its interior crammed with beds. Her dark gaze scanned each patient for a familiar face, finally locating him as a nurse handed him a bowl of ice cream. Yumi walked over and addressed the nurse directly.[break][break]

"Get the paperwork ready to release him."[break][break]

The woman stared at her. "And what's your relation to the patient, ma'am?"

Yumi walked through the darkened foyer of Casino Starlight, her scrutinizing gaze traveling over the furniture draped in fabric dust covers. Ever since former underboss Killian Decker departed the region, the casino had closed its doors.[break][break]

Yumi knew the unfortunate circumstance was a blow to Team Rocket's income, as the casino had provided much revenue to the criminal organization.[break][break]

Which is why the invitation from her employer, vincenzo de luca, had so intrigued her. He had invited her to meet him at Casino Starlight to assess it for future use. Could he be interested in acquiring the casino for himself?[break][break]

She finally spotted him waiting for her by the curving staircase leading up to the second floor. Smiling, she approached, her heels clicking against the marble floor.[break][break]

Yumi closed her ears to the scream that rang out behind her. Hitoshi was ahead of her in an instant, scanning the empty streets darkened by night. Outside the gate of her family's estate, she paused, a tremble running through her.[break][break]

If she took another step forward, there was no turning back.[break][break]

If she looked back at the house, she would never leave.[break][break]

Taking a deep breath, she joined Hitoshi on the sidewalk and listened to his plan, willing to let him take the reins for the first time. "A train to Saffron and a flight out from there," she repeated, so that the plan could cement itself in her mind. "That's perfect. Let's go."[break][break]

Her heels clicked against the concrete as she walked toward the payphone — and away from the life she'd always known.[break][break]

But at the very least, she wasn't alone.

Hitoshi's hand on her shoulder cut through Yumi's hysterics. Despite knowing each other for so long, rank kept them from crossing the gap of employee and employer to become friend and friend.[break][break]

Sniffling, she stared up at him through tear-kissed lashes, then leaned over for a fierce hug, seeking the comfort he dared to give.[break][break]

As Hitoshi spoke, Yumi cried silently into his shoulder, listening to the roundabout way he promised to stay by her side. Slowly, her tears ceased, the ache of betrayal giving way to a fragile reassurance. When he made his usual declaration — to kill for her — she nodded at last.[break][break]

Yumi's hands stilled on the fabric of one of her favorite blouses. She glanced up at Hitoshi, who stood in the center of the room like he suddenly didn't belong.[break][break]

"I am," she replied, feeling her chest swell with a tumult of painful emotions.[break][break]

All throughout the awful revelation in her grandfather's office, she'd reined in her tears, but as she looked across the room at the man who'd been her companion for nearly a decade, she suddenly broke down into sobs.[break][break]

"They're kicking me out!" she wailed, crumpling on the floor next to her suitcase, her face contorting with both rage and hurt. "They're cutting off my fucking money! I work now! They think they can just take all that away from me?"[break][break]

She didn't feel ashamed, pouring out her true feelings in front of Hitoshi. It was not the first time he'd listened to her vent or seen her in distress. But this breakdown was the worst of them, the most agonizing.[break][break]

Yumi sipped her tea as well, trying to keep her body from stiffening any further. Putting aside the cup, she sank a fork into a petit four to lift a portion to her mouth. Before eating it, however, she confirmed Admin Bee's suspicions.[break][break]

"They've already cut me off." She'd hated it at first, but had grown past that emotion. "I work now, between social media and the Nimbus, so I make my own money."[break][break]

Which was nothing compared to her family's vast wealth, but she hoped that discrepancy would not remain for long.[break][break]

Finally, the admin asked about the real reason she'd been summoned to his office. She took the time to finish her tiny mouthful of dessert and to wash it down with some tea before replying.[break][break]

"Team Rocket's public image is not the most pristine. Quite the opposite, actually. If we want to prevent more loss to our ranks, and especially if we want to gain supporters, we need to manipulate the masses with propaganda. Do we have any kind of social media presence? If not, we're behind on the times."[break][break]

Over the past nine years, Yumi had grown accustomed to Hitoshi's instinct to kill. He asked the question as if it were the simplest solution. Sometimes it had been, and she'd always been sure to praise him for his initiative and skill. But it wasn't the solution that time.[break][break]

She shook her head, her long black hair shifting across her back with every movement. "It's not so simple," she replied, emotion cracking her voice. "Killing would start a family war. My uncle would see it as an opportunity to take over, and that's the last thing we want."[break][break]

Besides, even though she was angry at her parents and grandfather, she still felt proud about her family's accomplishments and legacy. And she still loved them despite everything.[break][break]

Quick footsteps brought her to her room, a large suite that overlooked her grandmother's garden. For a moment, she stood within the doorway and simply gazed about, as if committing its interior to memory.[break][break]

Then she moved to her closet and began pulling out clothes.
