His companion’s comment about equines made him smirk a few moments, before wondering—where did that statement come from? It was completely from out of nowhere, so…

She then got the idea of asking him if he could do his ‘magic’ on the Glastrier…

“It just so happens… I have one of these myself,” he would tilt his head in the frozen equine’s direction. “They just don’t like coming out of Shoal Cave too often, because Hoenn is, of course, a region perpetually experiencing summer. You know. Ice melting faster when exposed to heat, that kind of thing.”

He would then blot out the screaming that was going on all around them because of the sight of aforementioned Glastrier, and he squared his shoulders.

“Sometimes, you know,” he would continue as he concentrated hard enough and ‘produced’ some small chunks of ice in his right hand before holding them out for the Glastrier to sniff at (and eventually eat), “…the most obvious answers are right there in front of us.”

While it was no Iceroot Carrot, it would do in the meantime!

“Hey, I’ve been through worse, you know,” he would crack; his mind’s eye flashing back to the time that he and Callan Young had to do actual, legitimate construction work back down in… was it Oldale, or Petalburg?

It was either one of those two places, and even then the locals from around those places wouldn’t stop watching them as they helped rebuild destroyed houses from the aftermath of a surprise Team Rocket attack around those parts previously.

His nose wrinkled at the smell of paint.

“Oh, my god. Did they not read the order form correctly?” he would blurt out as he took the other… canvas paintbrush and rolled it over in his hands!

They were going to be here for a while, weren’t they?

It was at this point he noticed something—

Unlike the other Unown that could warp their unfortunate targets to another dimension (hell, even a pocket dimension if they so desired) these Unown just… continued attacking them with Fire and Ground-type Hidden Power projectiles that kept raining out from several directions.

The Metagross let out a cry of distress; before switching from telekinetic powers to outright Psychic powers to divert, or at the very least redirect, some of the incoming projectiles!

“Have you noticed something?!” he would shout over the racket of projectiles.

“They haven’t tried to warp us to another dimension yet!” he would add while the Gyarados, ever so pissed that the Fire-type projectiles would not stop coming—immediately set up the area with a torrential Rain Dance.

“Get your hoodie up!” he would holler, because he already had a feeling he just knew what Kali was going to do next…

“Look, when he started training with my Lucario, they kind of. You know, had to respect each other! That was entirely him, not me! I would just watch their sparring sessions as the referee!” he would continue, holding up both his hands and then watching in silent awe at the ‘secret handshake’.

Damn. Maybe he’d have to figure something out like that down the line.

“At least we only have to paint, right?” he would continue, looking over at the half-finished structure. “Get this place tidied up in time for the—”

His attention would be drawn to some… some strange ‘footprints’ that were leading away from where they were supposed to be standing guard.

“You seen those around here?” he would ask while pointing at said strange ‘footprints’; while the Urshifu stood guard close to the edge.

(Nobody would dare attack a Pokémon that powerful who stood guard, right? Especially one that could Mega Evolve…)

“You… you WHAT?!” was all he would exclaim the moment the other man confessed they hadn’t brought any Water-types along with them for this trip.

He would have to deal with the potential aneurysm later; for now though, he would then dig deep into his pockets and pull out—

Oh, shit.

The red beam immediately materialized into his angry, angry, perpetually short-fused Gyarados, aptly named ‘Kali’; who would then bellow at the seemingly insurmountable wall of Unown that were attacking them before roaring in the Unown’s general direction and then releasing a powerful burst of water.

Not a Surf, but a Waterfall of crashing, pouring water, which she would then hurl at the learest ‘pile’ of pesky Unown.

“See?!” he would exclaim in the younger Josh’s direction.

“Do you want to be perpetually chased down by these—by them, just for a chance to become friends with a Legendary Pokémon?!”

“I’ve seen some of the early reports from this place—some of them mentioned encountering a Regirock of all things, while others mentioned seeing a space-time distortion just suddenly appearing in the middle of the damned place like it’s nobody’s business before disappearing,” he would muse once the shaking of the ground below had passed.

“If you have someone that can fly as fast and as far as logically possible, then send ‘em out, we’re going to need all the help we can get especially now since these things are just popping up—”

He would trail off because this time, there were even more tracks than the last time!

“Hey, Doug,” he would muse once he’d gotten a good picture of the ‘tracks’ and showing it to his companion, “…you think these tracks belong to that Suicune-adjacent… Pokémon?”

If they could even be called Pokémon, at that.

“Shiny rocks? That seems safe enough,” he would nod as he looked upward; towards the ceiling.

As long as the creepy-crawlies and the fuckin’ arachnid heebie-jeebies stayed the hell away, then they could bring back some nice samples and be done with this place.

(Alas, though, as they were Rangers who were supposed to know the lay of the land… they were going to be stuck here for a while, all things considered.)

He would then pull out a Safari Ball and in the burst of red light; revealed his Gardevoir who would look around their area in quiet wonder.

“Hopefully we don’t run into any complications.”

Which was easier said than done!

Before he could so much as give a reply back, the sight of the very same creature that they’d followed underground appeared before them and his mind just went into—

“Kid, what are you doing?!” he would exclaim; before the Metagross would affix one glaring eye at his eternal rival before charging forward in a surprise Dragon Hammer motion!

And then he belatedly realized just what the noise his Metagross had made to join in her earlier ‘screaming’.

“Haha, Ro, very funny, really? The noise of eternal suffering we all went through before internet was a thing?” he would trail off after the Metagross; who definitely did not want to be one-upped by the shiny Hydreigon while they were both headed in the same general direction.

This… was definitely not the entrance he’d been planning to make, however he was more than certain that the Urshifu would want to meet with his previous human companion so he decided to humor his fellow Ranger.

(He quietly wondered how far the actual word had gotten out of his demotion.)

“Figured it was going to be you,” he would greet the other; while the Urshifu would bow in greeting for a few moments before resuming his position as the rearguard.

“You were right—he does enjoy those morning walks!”

(Even if he wasn’t a morning person at all.)

He would then stretch his arms high above his head.

“So, what’re we going to be doing today, guard duty?” he would cackle afterward.

And then things went to absolute shit as Unown began filling the area!

“Oh, come on!” he would hiss, holding the frozen ‘blade’ ready to cut ~~a bitch~~ whatever came swinging out their way—it was just the two of them against several—waves—of the Unown that were now apparently getting ready to fling their Hidden Power at them both in a surprise maneuver!

“Keep an eye out on your shadows! They might appear from there!” he would yelp while the Metagross’s Telekinetic shield would hold up for a few more rounds; suffice to say majority of the incoming Hidden Power attacks were on literal fire as they came screaming his way.

“Get a Water-type out, quickly! Or anything that has Hydro Pump on you!” he would yell towards his companion’s direction as they would then hear the sounds of derisive, snickering laughter coming from the shadows…

It wouldn’t take too long before he—well, to be fair, it was Ro of all things who would catch their attention as he would then look down in the general direction where the silver Metagross was hovering.

“What are… those?” he would say from out of nowhere, catching his cousin’s attention by waving in her direction before pointing downwards to the strange ‘tracks’ that had appeared on the ground.

They were unlike any known Pokémon tracks that he’d encountered, so he would then take out his camera and snap several pictures of them for reference.

“They don’t look familiar to you, right?” he would confirm with her afterward.

“Wonder what made those footprints.”

He’d forgotten the last time he’d come to the simulations; however, when word got out there was new content he decided to stick his head back into it…

And walked right into something he wasn’t expecting.

“Oh, boy,” he would smirk for a few moments, watching as ever-familiar Andrea, wearing they Hydreigon version of a Sygna Suit, literally joined in with the loud screaming coming from the… it looked like a Jigglypuff, but it had a ponytail?

(Oh, right.)

“What on earth are you doing?” he would blink, watching as she literally roared along with the screaming… Jigglypuff-adjacent Pokémon. This made… absolutely no sense at all…

“Well, then.”

A pop of a Pokéball later, and Ro the shining silver beast of a Metagross was out, and rather than Lars joining in, it would be Ro who would join the screaming with his own ‘grating noise’ that sounded like…

You know how dial-up noises were made?

With that exact kind of noise.

Ro was faster at picking up the danger than he was; what with the sudden Telekinetic barrier that appeared around the two of them the moment the sizzling projectiles were approaching…

“Cazzo,” he would hiss, quickly reaching for one of several knives he kept on his person, concentrating on it a little and then watching as a casing of darker-colored ice bloomed around the blade.

“They’re here, aren’t they?!” he would exclaim, his eyes quickly darting around just to make sure they weren’t being tailed by more than one individual—it would be a whole load fucking worse if there were several, and he would have to protect the little Josh while they were out here!
