He was fuckin' annoying.

"If ya have a problem with it," he said, starting to reach for his side. Though, he stopped, instead breathing through his nostrils and speaking calmly. "Ya can take it up with yer Elite Four. My sheriff, Navy."

It was him who'd put him his position. And if the stupid Galarian prince had any problem with it, well... it wasn't his damn problem.

"Look, ya got me, or ya got no one. Okay? Knock yerself down a peg, 'n stop thinkin' too damn hard about this." Montgomery glared at him from beneath the rim of his hat, Pipsqueak's nails digging into the dirt.

"And? Does that matter to ya?"

[attr="class","monty"]The PSYCHIC struck Pip, damaging the thoughts in her head. But, without hesitation, she terastallized — the color of gray glowed, mixing with the light blue her illumina gave her.

He'd admit, Pip was quite the smart one.

"Pipsqueak. She was raised by SKARMORY," Montgomery said, raising an eyebrow.

There was a furious sound from the bird, her eyes narrowing into a glare as she regarded Ameena and her Pokemon with a look filled with disdain. Metallic claws scraped against the ground.

"Hit me with yer best shot."

With a new, invigored stance, Montgomery stood tall beside his Pokemon.

The gun was pushed aside. So, he placed it back into his holster — for now. Howard should know better that he was never safe from the kiss of a bullet.

But, his answer pleased Montgomery, who reached out to grip his shoulder. His hold was tight, almost threatening, while his smile said otherwise.

"Okay, kid. Then it's time to toughin' ya up."

He began to walk away from the carnage, leaving the other man behind as he walked toward the exit of the building. The other grunts would come and pick up the coffin. He, on the other hand, had more important things to do.

But, before Montgomery exited, he turned around and smirked.

"Welcome to team Rocket, Howard."

[attr="class","monty"]While Montgomery knew that Ameena's words were different from their previous exchange (where they had both gone at each other's throats before the war), they still flared doubt and uncertainty in his mind.

What if he made the wrong choice?

What if he couldn't save the people in the end?

What if Rocket was right?

He knew there was corruption in the League. Moral grays lined every single individual in top rank, even in someone like Navy who'd been willing to take him in and give him his craved second chance. He felt crazy.

He felt insane.

Here, in front of the woman he loved (loved?), Montgomery James found himself falling into the bottom of a dark pit with grasping hands, outstretched like a COFAGRIGUS. She was smart and conniving, far more than he.

"I do not take their sacrifice lightly." He couldn't deny it. After all... she was right. So was Aoki Hana.

Misty PYSCHIC TERRAIN lined the field. TINKATON became useless in the fight. In attempt to strike before switching out, she FAKED OUT the SLOWBRO, disappearing into her ball...

And out came Pipsqueak, in her glowing glory.

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery wanted to laugh at Howard's reaction. How hadn't it been obvious to the poor grad student, desperate for a living? It wasn't like he had been trying hard to cover it up.

"Shoot ya? Hmm."

He pulled his pistol from his side, looking over the gold plating, before clicking a bullet into place. He aimed the barrel ahead, toward a wall, and made a pew noise as he pretended to fire.

Then, Montgomery turned, shoving the barrel beneath Howard's chin, tilting it up to make eye contact with him.

"I could. And then I could steal yer Pokemon and sell her for a big buck on the black market." He glanced lazily at Shirley before looking back at him.

"Or, you could surprise me and come with me. Plus, cleaning yer brains off me would be quite the pain in my ass."

[attr="class","monty"]"Me. I need justice," Montgomery wanted to say. Though, Ameena knew this by now. She knew how he craved justice and redemption. It was more valuable than any EMERALD, ruby, sapphire... diamond. Justice was how Montgomery saw himself obtaining peace.

And still, her words cast a war in his chest. What would Navy do if he betrayed him? What would happen if the green deputy stepped aside and brought about justice in his own way, not in accordance to law?

All because a Rocket woman coerced his mind.

The only lifeline he had to hold onto was his absurd stubbornness. Even though Ameena was excellent at chipping away his guard, she had a long way to go to evict that bull-like demeanor.

"The innocent people. The ones your group is so shamelessly assaultin'. Destroyin' homes. Takin' over a city and puttin' all of the civilians at risk."

His hip cocked. "I'm gonna bring that justice."

TINKATON let out an appalling scream as the SUPERPOWERED attack hit her. She didn't allow it to phase her, though. With weakened defenses, she used the opportunity to swing her hammer...

And attack the MALAMAR, SKITTER SMACKING it until it collapsed.

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery was quiet. Any answer he would give her sounded like bullshit now. She knew his mind too well, and he almost felt as if she was performing some kind of witchcraft on him.

She put a spell on him. And he was hers. He fell into her hands like putty, moldable and able to change.

This wasn't the first time that she'd made the deputy question his affiliation toward the League. In fact, day by day, he wondered if he should depart from his role, become a vigilante of sorts, and feed from the riches she gave him. Because surely Ameena wouldn't hurt him.

She wouldn't betray him.

Would she?

Montgomery swallowed, mouth dry as he answered as confidently as he could. "Not until justice is served."

Because that's what it was all about. Justice.

GRAVITY weighed down the field, making Montgomery's feet feel heavy as his body was dragged down. He saw TINKATON'S hammer fall lower to the ground, growing heavier for her to hold.

She released, leaping forward with all her might to attack the MALAMAR in a SKITTER SMACK in hopes that the GRAVITY would be alleviated.

A startled voice appeared from the rustling brush, thick in a country-style Unovan accent. From the grass appeared Montgomery, clad in jeans, a black button up, and cowboy hat to boot. He looked more like a civilian than police officer.

Still, he approached Remiel Calcifet with his hands in the air, silently communicating that he meant no harm. "We're on the same trail. I'm not yer enemy," he promised, reaching into his pocket and revealing his identification.

"Deputy Montgomery James, Dewford PD"

Blowing a sigh from his lips, Montgomery tilted his hat back from his eyes, giving Remiel a glance over. "Yer that Calcifet fella, ain't ya? Kinda distinguishable from the accent. C'mon. I was scoutin' the area 'fore ya showed. They shouldn't be far."

From above, an ILLUMINA SKARMORY sailed gracefully in the air, coming to land beside the deputy. Pipsqueak squawked at her trainer, indicating she'd located the target of his operation. She then regarded the HYPNO with a cool expression, metallic feathers flared as she waited for it to retaliate in some way.

[attr="class","monty"]He'd have to reconsider his attacks. And perhaps, HISUIAN ZOROARK wasn't the best play here. Give her MALAMAR terastallized, turning pure dark-type, the ghost attack was all for nothing.

However, he decided that if she was going to play hard, he'd play nasty.

"Come back," he ordered his Pokemon. A switch from it to TINKATON was initiated.

The fairy-steel Pokemon's ball contained a radiant energy, the pink surface of the love ball seeming to vibrate with splendor. And she, herself, was filled with love to spare for her opponent.

She radiated in the light, ILLUMINA energy pouring off her as she held her hammer behind her back. The hammer was so large compared to her body, it was MEME-like in its own fashion. With a wink and a SWEET KISS, she aimed to bring the MALAMAR down into confusion before striking.

"I don't have a good reason to," he lied.

The risk of the HYPNOSIS was it ability to miss. And as the HISUIAN ZOROARK became an ILLUSION of the MALAMAR, the sleep didn't land. His Pokemon mocked its appearance, nearly identical to the last detail.

"No. I'm gonna bring ya in myself. Or die on my grave."

He waved his hand forward, allowing the copy-cat Pokemon to attack the MALAMAR with a surging SHADOW BALL. A smirk appeared on his lips, a toothy grin.

He wouldn't go down easy. He had to fight for his values, after all. Even if it was against her.
