[attr="class","monty"]How many times have the fought each other now? Five? SIX times? Montgomery wasn't quite sure, but the Pokemon she revealed was not a familiar one to him.

Honestly, he was mostly glad that her GARDEVOIR wasn't here to judge him. Of all the Pokemon she had, why did need that one...

"I'mma need to knock ya down a peg or two. I can't go back to the station without another victory on my belt."

Though, the number of times she'd outwitted him and escaped proved that he wasn't much of a winner in these encounters. It was a never ending game of cat and mouse. Though...

"I do love a challenge."

Despite his overwhelming urge to snatch her up and take her away, far away from here so they didn't have to battle each other, they were in public. There was no door to hide their affair here. It was time to put on his acting skills.

"I'll lock ya up this time, Abadi. Mark my words." Montgomery's voice was a low drawl, his hand grasping his ball. Winding back as if he was about to pitch a baseball, he threw it forward with intensity, releasing the HISUIAN ZOROARK inside.

[attr="class","monty"]There had been small battles along route 104, skirmishes, between the opposing factions as of late. Montgomery had been tasked to keep an eye on things and aid anyone in need of assistance should a fight break out.

So, why wasn't he surprised when he spotted ameena abadi along the grassy path?

Their relationship was a complicated one. On one hand, he certainly couldn't walk away from her knowing full well that she was going to cause issues for the League. He was a League official via the police department. That would be ignoring his job.

On the other, his affection for her had grown substantially since before the war. So much so, he'd even invited her to his home for a date after sneaking into her office and-

The thought heated his cheeks, and he cleared his throat to regain some sense of composure.

"Well, well. Look who we have 'ere. Seems ya've got good luck, runnin' into me of all people," Montgomery said, announcing his presence to her.

However, he could relate. Didn't he join Rocket to protect his loved ones? Grow stronger?

"Howard, if I may," he began, stashing the cash and wiping away the blood that covered his hands. "Do ya wanna become stronger? Protect Shirley with every ounce of your bein' and more than that? Not ever have ta worry about money again?"

He walked closer, coming behind the man and leaning closer, to whisper in his ear. "I can help ya. I can make yer life one thousand times easier than it has been now. All ya need to do..."

This time, a hand was placed on his shoulder.

[attr="class","monty"]There seemed to be a bit of hesitance in her voice. Or was it nervousness? Either way, Montgomery found himself eyeing her from the corner of his eye, wondering what exactly Petra had seen before.

He wasn't sure he wanted to ask and find out.

"So, we go there first. Lead the way," he said, taking the rear since she had the map in hand. He'd let her navigate while he provided cover from behind.

Montgomery spared one last look at the GIMMIGHOUL before they faced the cliff face ahead. Climbing it would be no piece of CAKE. But, he did have a few ways to get around the ledge.

Releasing his ILLUMINA SKARMORY, she took flight, scouring for a decently safe path. She stopped not far away. "Pip's found somewhere safe to start. C'mon."

"You sit here, sayin' all this jabber and shit about both sides, when you're a fuckin' criminal. You pushed yer swords through a man's chest without remorse. Yer fellow Rockets didn't hesitate to destroy the hospital in fuckin' Petalburg."

He clicked his tongue, regarding her with a sneer. "That boss of yers didn't hesitate to attack an undefended city without remorse, did he? Swarmed it with grunts, he didn't give a shit if you all died for him."

Bitterness rested on his tongue. And not from his cigarette. "Are you really so blind for bloodlust that you'll follow somebody who uses you as a pawn?"

His arms extended wide, a display to the carnage around them. "Nothing is fuckin' good about this. There's nothin' good in war. Ya can keep tryin' to play your 'only the League is evil' card, but yer actions speak louder than words."

Montgomery pushed himself off the edge he was sitting on, stomping out his cigarette. "I'm here for the people. I'm here to protect innocent civilians that were slaughtered from this world of pettiness Hoenn has against each other. It'll all burn down eventually, and no one will be alive after that. At least I can fall knowin' I've saved someone rather than slaughtered them for nothing.

"The world is fucked. All of it. But I believe that everyone, including you and me, will receive their karma eventually. Might as well fight for their safety in the mean time."

And how the fuck could Jethro see through him so easily? They had this RITUAL of sorts, where they tiptoed around the other until things hit straight on. And he could see the train coming.

The deputy sighed heavily, deciding to sit down and lean against the brick wall. There was a cigarette between his lips in mere seconds, filling the air with smoke as he puffed away anxiously.

His doctor was gonna be pissed. He was blowing through packs more now than ever.

"What if you find someone, someone so interesting and fascinating, but they're someone ya shouldn't even consider at all? Their values don't align with yours. Yer tryin' to kill each other. But ya can't fucking do it?"

"I think that you have to worry more about the people that she's eatin' right now, bud," he said, the bloodbath raging behind them.

Finally, it grew eerily quiet. He sighed, hitting his head back against the golden case and reaching to his side for a cigarette. He held the box out to Howard for him to take one as well.

"Just leave it to me. I'll get a nobody to haul it back to base. We gotta take the money before it gets tainted." He lit the cigarette, walking around the coffin to scrounge cash off the bodies of the dead.

"Navy, before ya leave..." Montgomery trailed off, trying to think about how to phrase his question without revealing his true feelings toward her or exposing ameena abadi's identity.

He couldn't afford for him to take her away.

"What do ya do when you've encountered the same person, the same criminal, and ya can't get the cuffs on their wrists? They escape every damn time. But ya don't think this person is a bad person? They just chose the wrong thing to do."

He sighed, pressing his head back into the pillow. "You know this person could be different. But do ya still bring them into justice?"

But, Montgomery knew that this conversation could continue on and on the same way, repeating the same arguments that were made time and time again.

Hana believed the League was evil. Montgomery had seen the evil from his past doing in Rocket. Neither side was good. Neither side was right.

But there was always a right way to go about problems, which neither side could do while the other existed and held their PRIDE.

"If ya wanna do something good..." Montgomery extended his hand to the ruined city of Sootopolis. "Why don't we go down there and actually help the people who need it instead of arguing with each other?"

Montgomery wished he could offer her more. He wished he could CHAMPION her against these times, but he couldn't do much against her wishes. What he'd learned, it was better to not get into the woes of others lives against their will.

Something he'd learned in Unova.

"Break's fine. Let's go there. Ticket's on me," he said, standing up and crushing the cigarette. He left it smoldering, though he offered his hand to Robin to aid her in standing.

[attr="class","monty"]He was. Despite having just had quite the time together mere moments ago, asking her out was definitely, infinitely, the most awkward thing he had done in years.

Maybe it was because he was buckling his belt as he asked.

But, Ameena agreed. And the nervousness that Montgomery felt began to ease away. "Late's fine. I'll start cookin' when ya tell me yer off, so it's hot 'n ready when you come!" Now he had to figure out what exactly to prepare for her.

However, he fell back into a gushing mess when she told him she wanted to gift him those things. "Don't spoil me too much, now. I'll have to play catch up."

Reaching for her, he pressed one last kiss to her lips. It was gentle in comparison to their carnal desires mere moments ago, but it knocked the air from his lungs. He met her gaze with his, humming before murmuring, "Text me when yer on yer way, yeah?"

And then Montgomery would vanish with CLAYDOL.

All to nervously clean his house.

However... "Why don't ya come by later on tonight? I can make dinner, and we can... uh... watch a movie?"

Was he asking her out on a date?

Maybe.

"I mean... I can take ya somewhere nice, if you want... or not! We don't have to." His face felt like it was on fire.

"I got CLAYDOL. We can handle it." Montgomery paused. "Take back the two other watches. I'll keep the rest. But, Meena, you don't need to give me expensive things to like you."
