There's a ruckus that promises trouble, and Adrian and company are presented with a unique threat to their infrastructure: A gang of Excadrill arrive on scene, promising to wreak havoc. You can almost forgive them for wanting to protect their territory from foreigners...[break][break]

But Adrian had no tolerance for setbacks.[break][break]

"Raj, let's go." It's a subtle shift of his wrist, and a keystone shines alight, resonating with Copperajah's own. The transformation takes hold, and the creature sports a towering stature, and a greater reserve of infinity energy to tap into. Adrian is quick to bark out commands—following up on Julian's attack without missing a beat.[break][break]

"PUSH BACK; WHIRLWIND!"[break][break]

The pokemon cannot advance against the strong gales, and resort to boring underground. They begin tunneling towards him and Copperajah violently, breaking up the ground below.[break][break]

"JUMP AND HEAVY SLAM!"[break][break]

The impact tremor was like an earthquake rumbling through the earth, causing great displeasure for the boring vermin, such that he did not see them rear their ugly heads thereafter.[break][break]

"...Think that's the last we'll see of them," he commented with a wry smirk.

Adrian thinks of Rowan and Howard... and the list stops there. Once upon a time, Martin would've been a keen candidate. And outside of the organization, Derek had always been a friend. But the rest of his friends—they weren't 'friends' anymore. Not after what he'd done.[break][break]

They had almost certainly disavowed him.[break][break]

The rest hadn't spoken to him for some time.[break][break]

"Maybe you could make some new friends." Julian has an advantage that Adrian doesn't—he's basically a nobody. Which means he could walk Hoenn's streets a free man...[break][break]

That made him remarkably jealous of Jules.[break][break]

Talking makes the work go faster, though he's begun to suspect what's happening behind their backs. It's all the same in the end; the work gets done, and only then can they go home. At least no one can question his work ethic.

As he and Julian break a sweat, Adrian realizes he hasn't been engaging in conversation like last time. Adrian isn't one to make peace with others lightly, though he's sensitive when it comes to family. Julian might have upset him, but it was not a thing that had permanence...[break][break]

Forgiven and forgotten. That was family.[break][break]

He and Copperajah help break away the earth where it obstructs their path, and the latter erects the steel beams as needed. Once here there are others who weld them into place, making the structure sound. While they're doing this, Adrian also notices their work seems to be endless.[break][break]

But he wishes to keep pace with the others.[break][break]

He was thankful for the silence as they docked the boat once again, giving the pass on the inspection. Adrian blew off the comments from the other grunts returning around the same time, focusing instead on Julian as they headed back to the car. "How can you NOT be?"[break][break]

Adrian began with a growl.[break][break]

"Megalopolis. Meteno. Galar. What other bullshit has to happen before you realize we're not playing at war?"[break][break]

If he died, it might be a welcome relief—though he remains wary of Yveltal's judgement. But fun and enjoying himself... those days had long since passed him by. Julian wouldn't get that—he'd been living in Sinnoh up until now. The greatest threat Jubilife City faced was his father.[break][break]

He hadn't endured the kind of loss Adrian had. Their worldly experiences were worlds apart, and their personalities were demonstrative of that.[break][break]

"You're acting like the kid I said goodbye to more than six years ago."[break][break]

If Julian had a glimpse of the reality Adrian had been locked inside, key tossed out, he might appreciate the fact that Adrian was doing as much as he was at all. As opposed to giving up.

It was too late, they were already jetting off.[break][break]

Adrian clamps down on the nearest thing to a handle or rail he can find, using the other hand to brace him while his legs strain to avoid slipping. It was all well and good Julian was enjoying himself, but this was not their assignment, and any damage from reckless misuse would carry consequences.[break][break]

It was unlike him to anything more than follow instruction to the letter. This spat in the face of most of his time spent in the service...[break][break]

...It reminded him of his civilian life.[break][break]

Julian uses a word that he hasn't found himself familiar with as of late. Fun. It's strange to think Julian saw himself coming to Hoenn, enlisting in Rocket... and having fun. It didn't check out.[break][break]

Or was it that he himself was strange in this way?[break][break]

After a few moments and remarks returned with uneventful silence, Adrian finally breaks himself out of his trance.[break][break]

"You'd just better hope you didn't damage anything," he sharply quipped.

What precious little he could do, he would have to—if only to ease the burden caused by the displacement of the admin's responsibilities. He'd been derelict in his own duties as of late, but that could change. Even now he drew upon lingering memories of PROJECT TOWER, and how he might be able to lend a hand to the cause. It was decided, then. He'd help.[break][break]

Pushing himself up from the chair, it grates against the floor as he shoves it aside, gesturing a farewell before turning about face and heading out the door. Something bothered him, however...[break][break]

It was not his intention to cause Howard pain, but to bridge the human connection. He would simply have to do better.[break][break]

Adrian mulls over his thoughts at Howard's question. Obviously, he lacked any current plan. It would even likely be that, for all his convictions, it would be someone else's hand that would stay Hoenn's execution—and bring ruin on its enemies[break][break]

Satisfying his revenge. Bringing about peace.[break][break]

"...I will do better than back then."[break][break]

There isn't a set of instructions or a cheat sheet to get him where he wants. But he can work towards it little by little, and try to learn from past mistakes, rather than excuse them.

These weren't for joyriding or showboating. If they failed to perform at the necessary time, whole fronts could fall apart. Anyone involved in the blunder would be more than simply reprimanded, depending on the stakes.[break][break]

After parking their automobile and heading towards the bay, Julian is quick to find a boat, and it's just as well. A practical test drive never hurt, though he's not entirely sure what a boat in distress feels like. It's not a covered field within his range of experiences.[break][break]

Still, if it allowed Jules to temper his childish curiosity...[break][break]

"Take us out of the docks and down towards the Pacifidlog routes."[break][break]

Adrian stepped onto the deck of the ship, if it could even be called that. This was a smaller model than most seafaring vessels, and he doubted it had much range. Still, it was certain to have its advantages.

As the time ticks away, Adrian takes a glance at their surroundings. People are looking on concernedly, some of them holding up phones, possibly recording. He needed to make a break for it, at some point.[break][break]

"Furor, with me," he gestures as he once again begins darting away down another street, rounding the corner. There may have been those stubborn enough to put their hands on him, if it weren't for the rampaging Gyarados...[break][break]

Before Gyarados can follow up the rear, it brings its tail in front of itself, guarding against the attack, holding back the Ceruledge's momentum before pushing back with the flick of its tail. And then it's back to chasing after Adrian.[break][break]

Maybe he should head for the boardwalk...[break][break]

That's exactly what he did. Instead of attempting a move East, his heading begins to take an aggressive Southern bias.

"We're not here for the cars, Jules." Adrian didn't care how well they worked—but they did. It was easier to find and train mechanics, especially when the pay was good. Their technicians for the submarine were also impeccable—he didn't see the need for a couple of peons to be rummaging through their mechanic's bay without any certifications.[break][break]

But they were recently in need of ships. Many they would have acquired by now, but most were only commercial grade—fit for ferrying around a few casual, leisurely types. They needed to be retrofitted with some plating, their engines swapped out for something beefier—and some of them needed their hulls patched. This was already being handled, by more skilled hands.[break][break]

And yet they had their orders for the day.[break][break]

Beckoning Julian over, Adrian entered the cabin of a rather uninspired humvee. Once they were both inside, he began wheeling the car around the depot, exiting the building through a checkpoint before heading down to the docks.[break][break]

"If we're lucky, we'll get to see some big guns arriving in the docks."[break][break]

The submarine was an incredible undertaking of engineering, but it was mostly for covert troop movement—the ships they were expecting from Kanto promised to be something else.

Adrian takes the findings and documents them with the help of their subject. Derek Hoffman... The world always ended up feeling so much smaller than it ought to.[break][break]

He struggled not to tamper with their findings. The impulse was there, but he couldn't afford Julian catching on to him. That wasn't a choice he wanted to force on Julian yet—choosing sides.[break][break]

Allowing Julian to return them to his cell offered time enough to overlook some of the details. It really wouldn't amount to much, in the grand scheme of things. Derek Hoffman was nothing but a former gym leader. But even still...[break]

Doubtless he would lend a hand to the cause, Adrian wished to spare him such an undeserved comeuppance—and obscured some of the details—making the document marginally less impactful.[break][break]

For someone who'd showed him great trust, he felt it was owed to them. He only hoped it made the difference, considering what he risked.[break]

Adrian tidied up the room and tucked their paperwork into a manila folder, holding it under his arm before departing from the room—joining up with Julian along the way to Mint Frost's office. There he could leave it with a secretary, and dust his hands of this whole sordid affair.[break][break]

"What, cold feet? I would've thought you'd known what you were getting into, showing up here and now..."[break][break]

That was still a conversation they'd yet to have. Much like Serena, Julian's Rocket ties had come as a shock. What else didn't he know?[break][break]

Adrian nudges them with an elbow.[break][break]

"They know better than to send you anywhere with only two smuggled pokemon to your name. Besides, I've heard tell of something big..."[break][break]

Walsh must be preparing something huge if they were confident they could hold Sootopolis.
