Dead ends in my mind...

[attr=class,bulk][break]Adrian feels a tension building up in him that he cannot release, every breath a conscious effort as he strives to keep up with Rowan in the gloom. The jingle on his right hip, a Klefki, is the only sure company with him. Secure in a place of relative concealment, it wards its trainer like a crafty shield, though perhaps in vain.[break][break]

In the unnatural blanket of night, Adrian's eyes turn into placids pools once again, pallid irises prominent amidst the stygian-stepped sclera. Though he cannot see far, he gleans more than most amidst the shadow and smoke of their enemy's obfuscations.[break][break]

Upon reaching the Tree of Life, Rowan became difficult to track through the murk and dim. His eyes tell him precious little. There are many pokemon all around them, but the signatures are weak; some even impossible to detect. The air is heavy with something that strains his eyes, but he does not recognize it for what it is: the corrupted energies of pokemons' attacks, altered in some way.[break][break]

Even when he tries to call out, his voice feels muffled and indistinct. To stave off the dread of isolation, Adrian releases GRIMMSNARL and TYRANITAR onto the field. They are seasoned fighters, especially Omen, who once faced off against Yveltal. Speaking of...[break][break]

Still no sign of the wretched thing, or its perturbing voice to jar his senses... Only grim warning as a prelude to the madness.[break][break]

Eventually he caught up to Rowan, stumbling through the shroud towards their aura. They have taken to attacking the tree, and he audibly heard his command: RAIN DANCE and SHEER COLD.[break][break]

"Are you sure that's a GOOD idea!?"[break][break]

They have both known the Tree of Life to attack aggressors, and what's more, he believes the preeminent threat to be anything but the tree before them. Yet even as he stares in disbelief, a brilliant aura punctures the veil of shadows and reveals the contesting force of Xerneas' GEOMANCY pushing back against... something strange.[break]That, or perhaps this is the fabled light at the end of the tunnel.[break][break]

Mudsdale followed alongside them while Magnezone resumed its duties levitating the caravan's cargo, joined by a third pokemon Adrian released; Shiftry.[break][break]

"Think you can clean up this dirt, Shiftry?"[break][break]

With a barely-gentle whip of its fans, Shiftry's WHIRLWIND picked up, throwing the loose dust into the four winds and making clean their precious freight. As they continued along, Adrian could see when pokemon were beginning to wander too close, and would send Mudsdale or Shiftry further out to ward off the curious critters.[break][break]

"Yeah, I raised this guy after seeing people fly around on them." It was handy and made him less susceptible to electrical attacks while airborne, but it never felt quite as graceful as allowing a bird to take flight with you braced against its wings. Still, he much preferred it to risking the chance at catching a stray thunderbolt.[break][break]

"I don't really specialize, but I do like Dark moves."[break][break]

As they pushed ahead, he could see the Mauville Hills jutting over the horizon. First they'd have to pass over a small creek, but after that it would be a straight shot.[break][break]

"So, what's after this for ya?" If they weren't already tending to plans elsewhere, perhaps they could get a round of drinks after this. It was better than drinking alone.

A sportsmanlike duel, not just a test of basic battle skills. Hoenn had a way of forging trainers in fire, but they would be doing themselves a service not to hold anything back. Speaking of, Adrian notices the Sneasel Derek's Salamence flies off with, though at first it just seems uncanny. Only after a few passing moments does he grow suspicious, casting a weary gaze across the fields surrounding them.[break][break]

From all sides they came, fast and hidden.[break][break]

"Magnezone, stop the cart. Gently." Even without the reminder the cart would be delicately lowered, the effect of MAGNET RISE wearing off as the pokemon closed in on them. Adrian could see them through the blades of grass, grabbing a pokeball and whipping it towards one of them to stun it. The capture failed, but it bought him a little time.[break][break]

The pokemon flashed their claws in a show of aggression.[break][break]

From out of another pokeball came a Mudsdale he hadn't used in a long time. It was only by chance he'd brought it along, originally considering pulling the cargo along on a wagon. But he'd decided against it after due thought.[break][break]

"Mudsdale, do me a favor and Mud Sport the cargo here. Magnezone, follow up with Discharge."[break][break]

They had to do what they could to safeguard the eggs from the wild pokemon, but also his own volatile battling style. And it worked like a charm, allowing the electricity to bounce off the dirt harmlessly while the assailing Sneasel were caught in the current of Magnezone's attack.

Nothing he did cancelled out efforts that weren't already jeopardized, when they'd neglected to capture the pokemon in the pokeballs instead of moving them live. Besides, left to her devices she'd ruin everything and get a few of their men put behind bars, no doubt. If that was allowed to happen, it'd be a complete loss for Rocket. But with his approach, perhaps the collateral would cost the city more than it was worth to try and fight crime head on in the future. Or not.[break][break]

His Gyarados does not exhibit a symptomatic response to the powders, though it may simply be a matter of time. Rather than concern himself with that, he immediately executes his exit strategy, making a point to remember Zahra's aura.[break][break]

While Gyarados prepares the attack, slinking into the ocean front surrounding the pier before resurfacing in a torrent of liquid revenge, Adrian begins to flee with his Magnezone using MAGNET RISE, leaving the grunts to deal with their shortcomings.[break][break]

When it finally emerges, breaking the water's surface, Gyarados comes thrashing into the man-made structure in an attempt to break it down, the surging waters carrying anything off the dock and pulling it into its riptide. Nothing was certain, except that it would cover his escape. After the attack, Gyarados would retreat to sea for a time.[break][break]

After separating himself from the situation, Adrian would later give a mission report to Cillian Quinn, detailing the mission's failure and lack of preparedness by the men on the ground. Somewhere in his office the Underboss undoubtedly grunts with disapproval before ending the call, forced to reconsider Adrian's placement as a Rocket Beast in the wake of such overwhelming FAILURE.

'Whipped into shape' doesn't have a good vibe to it. Makes them sound like some sort of task force, when they originally served as game wardens and environmentalists. Most were only protectors of the wildlands, and nothing more. Perhaps that is a preconception he's carried over from Sinnoh. But it was still passing strange, to him.[break][break]

Still, it shouldn't surprise him.[break][break]

"Petalburg Gym Leader again, huh? Maybe I'll finally get that badge..." With Howitzer back at his side, that dream is no longer left as smoldering embers, dying out in the pit of a brazier. While they're exchanging all of this, the Sneasel begin darting ahead of them, not yet realized for the threat they pose to his little caravan.

Once about a dozen eggs in specialized incubators were loaded onto a trolley, Adrian released a Magnezone to help keep their transport mobile, all without suffering from the terrain. Executing its MAGNET RISE, their operation went forward smoothly.[break][break]

"So, how's the Ranger business keeping up?" Adrian inquires, making for less-than-interesting small talk as they steadily make a break for Mauville City. While they're moving along the route, a band of wild Sneasel are rummaging through the tall grass, keeping an eye on their caravan while Salamence and Magnezone patrol the skies.

She, Lars and perhaps even Thomas were precisely the sort of vindictive fools he would never wish a position of power upon, out of fear of what they'd do.[break][break]

And here she was offering the proof to his misgivings...[break][break]

Though perhaps in this, her hostility was a foregone conclusion, and shouldn't be cause for much surprise. Rather than obsess over the specifics, he searches Rowan for visible signs of harm—scars along the skin or some such injuries. Remarkably he doesn't see any on the surface, which beggars belief. Even so, Rowan has a wounded look in his eyes, though whether from keeping secrets or the tribulation he's faced, Adrian couldn't know. Throwing his arms around Rowan, he'd bring them against his shoulder, a gesture made hollow by his inability to do anything about what had already passed.[break][break]

Delivering eggs was the short of it, but there was a hidden difficulty in what they'd be required to do while handling the eggs. For starters, the pokemon inside were apparently very sensitive to changes in air pressure. The caretakers there stressed the health of these eggs was extremely fickle, and even the slightest disturbance could alter them drastically.[break][break]

Once while they were discussing the logistics, he'd reached out to gently stroke the shell of a nearby egg that was being monitored, but the resident nurse on hand (a Chansey) blasted him with an EGG BOMB almost immediately. He could still feel the grit and grime of it, though he'd managed to get himself mostly clean.[break][break]

With the eggs so sensitive that they dare not deliver them through traditional means, they were hoping for the trainers to escort them on foot, but that would require them to contest any wild pokemon between here and Mauville City.

Can I just say that I'm really excited to have you spearheading the rock band for our characters. You've never been one to do things in half measures, and it already shows. I'm hoping I can lend myself to the enjoyment as we take this group forward, building on our characters' hobbies and even discovering some new music along the way.

Adrian packed away his pokeball after withdrawing the Slowbro before heading back out the way they came. He could afford to leave Derek in charge of submitting a mission report, and getting the Ditto back where they belonged. All he had to do was kick back, relax, and wait for a check to arrive with his name on it.[break][break]
