Even in virtual reality, a battle was a battle, and she happened to have a fair bit of experience with those. That was why, when the brawl began, she gave pause, watched, and waited.

At least, that had been the plan. The Psychic blast was the first to land, and try as she might, her slim sword couldn’t defend against the blow. Her feet slid back several feet, but there was always a silver lining. A ping, an orange glow around her body and an icon above her head indicated Stamina’s activation, preparing her for the next assault.

The lady mage tried to gain distance. Annie wasn’t going to allow anybody to get a hit-and-run in so early, but then again… Drawing the rogue’s ire and fire could only mean good things with Stamina in play, and Alec- Well, she just thought killing him would be fun. There was only one move for the job, then. An opportunity revealed itself as the Shell Trap created a smokescreen, and she rushed into it.

Amidst the remnants of Alec’s explosion, hurried footsteps and the sound of a charging attack were the only tells of her ambush. Her sword appeared to the rogue and the demon mage just before her face did, her devilish grin plastered across it. From one side of her body to the other it swung, a blade of energy extending the length of her katana so she could slice them both at once. Should sword meet flesh, the debuff would take hold shortly after.

[attr="class","athread"]Oblivious to the danger, Team Annie sprinted on. The Shroomish opened her mouth wide, ready to fire another curveball into whatever was left of the racers… Only to find herself startled out of her master’s arms! She hit the rock floor face-first, while her trainer stared in disbelief. Apparently, nobody had briefed her on what to do if she was caught… So she bolted, abandoning the mushroom to her fate. One need only follow the path of shoved bodies and annoyed groans to follow her, if they could be heard above the growing buzz. The race was drawing to a close, and its audience was eager to see who would take the crown.

The pesky Pokemon had an easier time fleeing the scene. Her size meant that she could disappear into the sea of feet, disappearing behind them in mere seconds. The team could try and hunt her down, but that would mean precious seconds chasing after the trainer, or watching as the racers took their final turn.

Annie took the final sprint as her chance to command Celeste: “Kick it up into high gear!” The girl found herself hugging her mount a touch too tightly as she ran like the wind, Agility demonstrating that Rapidash were just as quick as they were beautiful. Could Hades keep up? Perhaps. The Salazzle, it seemed, could not, try as she might to crawl her way into first place. Without the timely interruption of the Shroom’s spores, the lizard had lost its chance to win.

And so it was Annie’s steed that crossed the finish line, slowing to a gallop as the crowds roared. The girl, of course, was soaking in the ego boost; once she’d let out a breath she hadn’t realised she was holding, she gave the ruffians the royal wave. The Salazzle stalked its way back to Nightshade’s trainers, who were hurling abuse from halfway down the racetrack. Blitz Bolts’ men ran onto the course to recover their fallen runners. A few seconds too late, Annie remembered that she hadn’t been alone. Wide eyes sought out Hades, and then his trainer…

She’d even found the walk cycle that best matched the spring in her step. It was everybody’s favourite self-proclaimed trainer extraordinaire… In samurai armour. With a katana.

“And last, but not least!” Her hands rested behind her bed as she strolled up to the party, taking advantage to the brief peace they shared. At least, that had been the plan. A pang of realization showed itself in her eyes, and a second later she was pointing an accusing finger at the gym leader turned demon. “Wait a second… You’re stalking me! I’m flattered, but there’s got to be better ways to spend your time, right?”

[attr="class","athread"]Everything was right. They had plenty of tinder, her stick was as good as a mass of pixels could be. There was no way an elite ranger and a junior survivalist had forgotten how to start a fire, so the game had to be playing hard to get with them. No matter. Annie had struggled enough with fires too many times to back down after a few seconds, or to let that dampen her mood.

At least, not at first. After half a minute it was clear that something had to be missing. She pulled the stick free, squinting her eyes at their pile. “Okay, this is some bull.” She gave the stick’s end a stern glare, then set her sights on Lykos. “There was probably a firestarter given out in the tutorial. This is our punishment for rushing ahead. …Either that, or one of the monsters drops a lighter. Or it’s at the marketplace. I don’t know.” She set herself back to the task, occasionally grumbling something about struggling to get some warmth, even in a video game.

A squint gave away that her mind was hard at work, and soon enough she had to stop the giggles from bursting out again. “So, was your choice to be a Ranger based on your job, or…?” She allowed him a moment to fluster himself before she went on. “I’m just messing. Mostly. Though I’d call myself a bit of a warrior in real life too.” She stopped short of reminding him that the rogue class could have fit just as well.

“Anyway, what you’ve got looks fine to me! Maybe they’re just going for realism, and sometimes it takes a while. Nothing some determination can’t fix!” She crouched down beside what should have been their campfire, sprinkling her contributions of tinder on top. A stick was planted in the centre, and she got to work rubbing it between her palms. If there was one thing she was grateful for, it was that pushing a pair of controllers back and forth wasn’t nearly as uncomfortable as trying to spark a flame in reality. It seemed to be just as time-consuming, however. “Geez, is this supposed to be fun? What about all the people that have never made a fire before…?”

[attr="class","athread"]Four magic words had guided Annie through character creation – you can’t improve perfection. Years of being her own and only hype man manifested themselves in Ultimeite, as close to her real-life self as the game’s engine would allow. Well, minus the samurai armour. And the katana. It made her unmistakable, for better or worse, and meant that her accomplishments in the game world might just transfer into reality, and vice versa. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but Annie had always been a dreamer.

She’d been at least half-right; it hadn’t taken long for her to be flagged down, by a familiar voice and a not-so familiar face. As soon as the man introduced himself, Annie tried to hold back a bubbling grin. She wasn’t doing a very good job. “…Why do you have an eyepatch?” gasped the girl, pursing her lips shut shortly after.

“No, you know what? It’s a fantasy! You can wear whatever you like. No worried, though. I mean, I didn’t do the tutorial, but everything so far has been going down with a few stabs. …The armour helps a lot. Also, a lot of experience in running from angry things. So how hard could this be?”

She reached down every few steps, picking up a stray leaf or twig. She’d spent enough nights starting her own fires to call herself an expert in the art, even if she’d long since delegated the task to her Pokemon. “What have you tried already?”

Amp hung his head, realising that he was on his own. Annie, on the other hand, had a smile that couldn’t possibly grow larger. Even if she couldn’t see his face, the lack of laughter and mockery meant the world. “Keep your spirits high, little light! If I’m right, we’ll need you to be on top of your game.” He nodded back, all too aware of what she meant. The junior hero gave him a thumbs-up, took one step forward, and then jolted a foot into the air at the Machoke’s roar.

Maybe she was a little too excited.

Her feet touched the ground, and the smile remained as if nothing had gone wrong. While the rest of the crew rushed forward to try and force out the Wailord, Annie didn’t budge. She’d owned a Wailmer for a while, and could barely budge him on a good day. She didn’t have a chance in hell of forcing its evolution to go anywhere. Not alone, at least.

“I think we’ve got a better idea. A little risky, but all the best ideas are. Amp, are you ready?” He nodded, a lack of enthusiasm exchanged for determination. The stone strapped to his back had remained mostly hidden, but when Annie pulled her Key Stone (tied to a string) from her pocket, all became clear. “Right! Let’s power up!”

The transformation was brief, but a spectacle to behold. The two stones shined, their rays of light seemingly searching for each other. The Ampharos braced himself as the Mega Stone expanded a mirage of itself, shielding him from their eyes as he involved even further beyond. As the shell of light exploded, Amp revealed himself once more, roaring to the sky. Annie could never tell whether it was out of exhilaration or pain, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to find out.

Instead she focused on the task at hand. “We don’t have long! Amp, whack ‘em with a Focus Blast! Everybody else… Get out of the way, probably!” If her words hadn’t been enough of a warning, the charging of the attack might have done the trick. The ball of energy between Amp’s hands quickly found itself adorned by stray streaks of barely-restrained power, rapidly flickering in and out of existence. Annie heeded her own advice and took several steps back, just in case.

The ball of fighting spirit was fired straight into the Wailord, the speeding bullet forcing the behemoth several feet away from them – and closer to the ocean. The progress came at the cost of a strained groan from the beast they were meaning to help; Annie frowned, but held no remorse in her voice. “Most other Pokemon would’ve been knocked out from that, but Wailord’s got too much fat for it to really hurt. I think. I’m pretty sure.”

[attr="class","athread"]Annie took the opportunity to scoop her partner into her arms; Libre grumbled, but wasn’t bothered enough to try and escape. “Yep-yep, that’s the way I try to live my life! Every day’s some sort of new adventure, if only you go out and find it. That’s how I’ve ended up with one, two…” She whispered the next few numbers. “Eighty Pokemon! Maybe more now. Each of them special and strong in their own way, just like me.”

It was no surprise that the woman hadn’t known of Annie’s deeds. She was more than happy to speak of them, but nothing in her appearance would suggest that she was nearing the level of Hoenn’s elite trainers. Her size and age were obvious points against her, and her tracksuit was unassuming at best.

“Anyway, I’m juuuust about sixteen, yeah, but that’s no excuse to keep still!” She paused for a moment, eyes flickering to the rush of flames. The hesitation briefly showed on her face, easily missed thanks to the battle. “I haven’t had an easy time, getting to where I am. Don’t get me wrong, I’m over it, but it taught me how to work hard. I don’t think I can ever keep still again, after spending so long fighting to keep me and my guys safe. Doing nothing would just feel weird, you know? Like I’m wasting away.”

In turn, the woman revealed a little of her past. She spoke of things Annie couldn’t quite relate to. Wealth. Parents. Privilege. A twitch of a frown showed itself on her face, but of course, it wouldn’t last. “Well, that’s the most important thing, right? That you’re doing something that you love with all your heart. You sure do sound passionate about it, at least. Which begs the question…”

She shuffled closer to the woman, eyes wide with curiosity. “What truth behind truth have you discovered in Hoenn?”

She looked back and forth between the man and the beast, the latter patient enough to let her brain catch up with them. Words from the Fairy Professor echoed through her mind – something about Pokemon being very capable of understanding intent, even if they couldn’t parse every word. Her gaze finally settled on the latter, and with the faintest of smiles, she continued.

“Er.. I mean it, big guy! I want you to get even stronger and more awesome with us, but we can’t make that happen if you’re just going to be a grump all day! Like, look at Trixie!” Both arms gestured to the Whimsicott across the field. “That little girl could totally kick your butt, because we’ve worked long and hard to make each other stronger. It takes a while, and sure, neither of us are perfect all the time, but we both care about each other and making each other better! That could be you too, if… er…”

She’d realised too late that the titan had stopped paying attention. The moment she’d hinted that a pint-sized puffball could challenge him, his glare had been dead-set on his next target. At least he had the decency to push Annie aside before he started walking, letting her trail off as his stomps carried him to Trixie… Who, of course, was having none of that. Worried whimpers turned into panicked calls, but Annie had chosen to stay silent.

The Tyranitar broke into a run. So did the Whimsicott, arms in the air as she sprinted for dear life. The two disappeared into the trees, and soon enough, their roars and cries faded too.

“…Huh.” A finger scratched against Annie’s chin. “Well!” She turned back to Samuel, eyes wide and full of hope. “I think that we’ve reached an understanding, and that we’re about to reach another one! Honestly, I think that worked out really well.”

Two minutes later, her voice echoed from within. “The hero Pokkenger has found his newest partner in questionable-crime…” Light flashed from the side of the building, revealing glimpses of Annie’s shadow. At least, the figure seemed to be mostly her, with a few ‘improvements’. It wasn’t until she sprang out from her cover, hands on hips as she stared the man down, that her plan became clear:

She’d commandeered a domino mask, and a torn length of black cloth draped her from neck to ankles. If not for her elbows jutting out, she might have kept the illusion of a costume, but her tracksuit was plain as day beneath. Not that a lack of funds had ever stopped Annie. “Together, with the fiercest of Pokemon, they will take back Hoenn’s shores from the giant menace!”

Her partner lazily strolled out of the cave – a lilac Ampharos, raising an arm in greeting to the man. The living lighthouse seemed unimpressed – or perhaps unamused by her show. “Said Pokemon will try to show a little more enthusiasm for heroics!” His expression went unchanged as he raised his other arm, looking to Kazimir for some sort of support. Annie looked too, her wide eyes searching his body for approval, or at least excitement.
