[attr="class","athread"]Perhaps it was no surprise that Annie struggled to relate. Her family were her Pokemon, handpicked and trained to see her as the leader of the pack. Arguments were few and far between once they’d been inducted. Before that, she’d had siblings in the loosest sense – the fellow foundlings that made up their home in Kanto. If she didn’t get along with them, she didn’t talk to them, and there was next to no obligation for her to repair that relationship.
She didn’t miss that. Most of the time.

So when Alec drifted off into his own mind, too focused on his kin to remember his place, she only watched on with a mild look of confusion. When he found himself apologising, she only offered a shrug in return. A few seconds too late, she realised that she should at least try to give her two cents. “…The way I see it, it’s your life, right? Why spend it doing things that make you sad? It’s like, erm…” She tapped her bottom lip as she looked around for an example. With nothing but the ocean and islets around them, there shouldn’t have been much for them to work with.

So she pointed to the giant that was Exeggutor, half-submerged as it strolled between the patches of land. “Like that guy! Look at it go, not a care in the world but what it wants to do next. That’s a life goal right there.”

[attr="class","athread"]The Braixen’s disappointment seemed to go largely unnoticed by Annie, mostly because she was eyeing her newest filled capsule. She slipped the ball into her pocket as she went on. “Independent! Even better!” There was a glint in the girl’s eye as she observed, and perhaps admired, the woman. “You’re not held back by corporate… things. You’re free to look into whatever you like, even if that gets you into way too much trouble. Of course, then you have to get yourself out of the trouble… But that’s part of the adventure!” Hesitation barely showed itself for more than a second at the thought of risk. No doubt, she flirted with danger more often than she should have.

She might have continued, if not for the sight of everybody’s favourite dog Pokemon. The girl’s quiet cooing drew Lucha Libre’s attention for a second, away from an apparent bush he’d been trying to scare into submission. It wasn’t until Annie took a second glance that she realised there was a Pokemon hiding within – half her bird’s size, but attempting to compensate by stretching her leaves out. It was a battle of the wingspans, and with a chuckle, Annie quickly realised that it would fall to her to break the stalemate.

“I remember that everybody went crazy over them just after they were allowed into Hoenn. Heck, there’s probably still a lot of love for them now. A good addition to any team.” And yet, she was barely even glancing at the pup. Instead, she stepped between her wrestler and his rival, lowering herself as close to her level as her bent knees would allow. “Now, now, folks. You can both glare at each other all day, or you can fight, or you both come with me and get some food later!” Food was a great motivator, as Annie could attest, but she hadn’t expected the Swadloon to shuffle out of the bushes that easily. Still, for her trustworthiness, the bug earned a little berry to munch on, and then a Pokeball as her new home once it was done.

“Easy peasy,” Annie muttered to herself. By the time she turned back to Selena, they were both one Pokemon richer. “Taken the gym challenge? More like finished it! I’ve got half the region’s badges. It won’t be long now before I’m taking on the Elite Four – and winning.” There was no shortage of self-satisfaction in her voice, but if she was telling the truth, then she’d probably earned it. “Safe to say, I know my stuff. When it comes to battling, at least. Some other stuff, not so much, but I’ve still got time to learn. Hey!” She snapped her fingers, as if suddenly remembering that she was having a conversation. “Is that why you’re a journalist? To go around and learn? Not a bad reason to take up a job, if I do say so myself.”

It wouldn’t last long, thankfully – they had too much to do to focus on bickering. “As long as you know what you’re doing,” she said, hoping that would put the dragon argument to rest. They’d find out very quickly if they were the right creatures for the job, and for all of their sakes, she hoped that they were.

She couldn’t say the same for the Zoroark behind her. “I’ll see you after, alright?” A quiet nod from Kit was taken as his farewell; he was returned, and in his place stood her electric lion. Bolt perked his head up as Annie gave her orders: “Things are going to get dark soon. Help us keep eyes on what’s around us, alright? Especially if something is approaching.” He showed how his kind had earned the moniker ‘Gleam Eyes’ when his faintly glowed gold, a shine that would only grow more pronounced when they were inevitably plunged into darkness. “The ‘Dex says Luxray can basically see in x-ray vision. Between my guys and Kaida’s, nothing will sneak up on us.”

The old man requested their attention, and so Annie listened. Good thing, too, for he brought the best talent of all to the table – luxury gear. The girl’s eyes lit up, revealing the all-too-lively Annie she’d tried to stifle. “That’s a HoloWatch, right? Duuuuuude.” Her free hand moved to shield Arachnode’s eyes – or, as an observant trainer would notice, stop him from springing onto the snacks. “If I do good, can I keep one?” Tickly fingers strayed from in front of her bug to claim a device for herself – the red one, of course. While he strayed onto darker topics, she made herself familiar with her new (and hopefully permanent) phone. It would be her first, after all.

“I’m not planning on letting it come to that. We’ll have the element of surprise, and at least half of the guys here are trained in this sort of stuff. I think we’ll be fine. Hope.”

With the green light from Alec, Annie reached down. Arachnode scuttled off her hand and onto the cave walls, his size and speed making him quickly disappear into the cave itself. She hadn’t even bothered to give him orders – a sign that this wasn’t the first time they’d had to shut down a generator. It wouldn’t be the last either.

They had about a minute to spare before confused calls and lights flashing the last of their life marked the start of their operation.

[attr="class","athread"]The dark sphere met nothing but air, flying out of the cave and presumably ruining a wild Wurmple’s day. The same couldn’t be said for the Dragon Pulse. Too slow or too stubborn to dodge, the titan grunted as it was struck, but stood its ground. The damage had been enough to give them pause – and the trainers a moment to breath.

“Okay! Big ghosty golem guy! We can handle that, right?” Wide eyes darted between the Automaton, her partner, and his Pokemon as he entered the fray. As vicious as it was strong, Annie had her reservations about being in a tight spot with a Hydreigon… But it wasn’t the right moment for complaints. Instead, she sent out a fighter of her own.

Her Weavile glanced down the tunnel, watching the Golurk coat itself with an Iron Defense. “Blitz, can you get down there and beat it up?” He examined the tools he had to work with. Not much, but a Weavile was nothing if not resourceful – and a pack Pokemon. With an apparently disregard for his own safety, he leapt from his trainer’s side and onto the Hydreigon’s back, pointing a set of claws at their target.

“…Oh boy.”

Any good trainer needs to have patience when they’re getting to know a new team member. Some of my strongest guys needed a lot of time to come around- And then there’s Lucha.”

It had been mere seconds since his duel ended, but he’d somehow managed to find a skittish squirrel to challenge. The Pachirisu was having none of it; the moment he showed his wingspan, the rodent dived into a bush and took off. Annie opened her mouth to comment, thought twice, decided that it wasn’t worth it and turned back to Selena.

“Oooo, a journalist! Nice, nice. Are you working with HNN? Or, let me guess - you’re on the lookout for an interview with Hoenn’s next champion?” One hand accepted the handshake, while the other jabbed a thumb into her chest, with a little too much force. Her eyes gave a slight wince, but she refused to acknowledge it.

“Rustboro. Yeah, I’m around there pretty often! I’m not planning to be on a record any time soon, but my Yanmega is. Maybe you caught me dropping him off, or over at the Straaaaay-hey!” She’d noticed the mount too late. The Braixen had everything under control, and the challenger was set to flee. Annie couldn’t have that.

“Lucha, scare tactics!” She pointed her masked fighter to the rapid runner. Fortunately, his small size lent itself well to Agility; one mighty Bounce sprung him into the Zebstrika’s path, where his overconfidence pose could startle the beast. The horse reared his front legs, half-startled and half-prepared to Stomp Lucha Libre, but a Pokeball bounced against his body before he got the chance.

“…Sorry. If you wanted to catch that, it’s yours, but I’ve got a thing for big and fast electric-types. They fit really well into one of the teams I’ve got going. If there’s something that you know me for, hopefully it’s for my battles.” The Hawlucha must have learned to be cocky from somebody, and with the smug edge in Annie’s voice, there were no prizes for guessing who.

[attr="class","athread"]Annie raised an eyebrow. On one hand, she was used to being the main source of overconfidence in any group, and it was great to have the sentiment shared. On the other hand, her confidence came from experience; could the same be said for the stranger? She supposed there was only one way to find out.

“Great! No reason to waste any time, then. I’ve got a bunch of Pokemon on me, but I won’t know what’s best for the job until we see what we’re up against.” As if on cue, the tremors grew stronger. An invitation – or a threat. The girl seemed unfazed, already high on her cocky smile. “I don’t think it’s too far in from here, so get ready and try not to die, alright?”

She beckoned for the man to follow her as she took a step in, only to pause. “Oh! I’m Annie Mei, by the way – young trainer extraordinaire!”

Dust and debris came loose as they ventured into the tunnel. Lanterns on the walls haphazardly lit the path, which led straight to the source of their troubles. None of the lights reached far enough for them to see the guardian, but that was no problem. It was more than eager to announce its precense.

The Golurk retracted its legs and planted its feet against the ground. What should have been the end of its body became a cannon, flashing and glowing as it charged a Shadow Ball to blast down the length of the tunnel. “Oh, shi-“ Annie dived for an alcove, shifting clear out of the attack’s way… But what would Draze make of it?
