[attr="class","athread"]It was no secret that ancient temples hid beneath the earth, and no surprise that some of them remained guarded. At least, it hadn’t been a surprise to Annie. The panic in the faces of the fleeing scientists told that they hadn’t seen it coming. The earth quaked beneath Annie’s feet, no doubt the sign of an enraged Pokemon, but the rumbles were distant enough to tell her that she wasn’t in danger. Yet.

Instead, she stayed put, waiting for her partner to arrive at the cave mouth. Her briefing told that what had meant to be a Secret Base had become a hot ticket for archaeologists, only to become hostile territory when they hit what appeared to be an unmarked tomb… With a groundskeeper. It didn’t seem eager to leave, but with an open path to the rest of the region, they couldn’t afford to let the beast stay standing.

In other words, they’d given all of the information except what Pokemon to expect.

“Hey, hey!” She’d call once the man arrived – who else would stray that close to trembling earth? “I hope you’re ready to kick some but, because this guy feels pretty worked up!”

[attr="class","athread"]The Kommo-o survived both attacks. It would be a surprise from anything other than the Elite Four, but she supposed they had to earn their name somehow. Likewise, Leia took a fierce punch to the face, though she was saved the pain of being launched into a second attack. Wildfire’s glow left him, and he raised his arms to catch the Comfey before he could add to her troubles. He may have been Reckless, but he wasn’t blind. His feet touched the ground where his enemies should have been, giving Kyle the briefest of glares before they heard commands.

A dragon blinking into existence above the stage was hard to miss. “Ceiling. Crown formation, Screened Storm.” @ken, for all his quirks, had taught her the value of putting her Pokemon together. The Comfey came to rest atop her attacker’s head, curling up to avoid his flaming beard. Wildfire reared his head back as he turned, bellowing as he released rolling clouds of Smog upwards. Leia followed up with a Petal Blizzard, releasing a tornado of razor petals into the arena. Only the Emboar’s position directly under its summoner protected it from the storm. The poison fog could hurt, but once again the Emboar’s move was a smokescreen first and an attack second.

[attr="class","athread"]The apology seemed to ease Lucha’s tension… Somewhat. Maybe he was frowning. Maybe that was his resting face. It was often hard to tell with Pokemon. Annie seemed to think the problem was solved, at least, standing up straight again. “No worries, no worries. Surprise attacks are good for training anyway! A five-star Pokemon wouldn’t get hit anyway, right?” The luchador struck a pose, extending his arms and holding one leg in the air. His battle cry was as close to affirmation as they were going to get.

Unfortunately, it might have helped attract the wild beasts. Fortunately, Annie had been hoping they’d find a punching bag soon. The Tangrowth was toasted in short order, but that wouldn’t help them against the ball of lightning barrelling onto the scene. Selena had given the warning so Annie didn’t have to. It was a close call, but the Hawlucha managed to dive out of harm’s way.

“Ooo, that’s the one! I’ve been looking for this one for a while! Lucha Libre, don’t beat it up too bad, alright?” She armed herself with a Pokeball while her partner got to work. His little feet packed a lot of strength, throwing him into the air. When he zipped back to the ground, it was with a white glow that heralded a painful blow. Indeed, the Flying Press would knock the little hedgehog off her feet, making her a sitting duck for a Pokeball to the head.

Annie turned her attention to Selena as the ball decided her target’s fate. “I feel like I’ve kinda seen you around before, but not really. I go all over the place, so it’s hard to keep track. Anyway, I’m Annie Mei - trainer extraordinaire!”

At least she’d managed to lay a hand on the beast. That was more than she could’ve said for Frankie after it had been born. Built. Made. Annie was never sure which word to use. “I never heard a word out of it before the night market,” she admitted, a little calmer now that the Null had proven itself to be hostile. Or just uncaring. It was hard to tell with them, and it was far from the only thing in the room puzzling her.

It was one of the few times she wasn’t happy to be surrounded by familiar faces, knowing that each and every one of them was just as guilty as she was. None of them could have shared her defence for doing it, so… what had led them there? Why? Did she dare ask?

Probably not. Even she knew that was the worst kind of icebreaker.

She took a seat as far away from Stormy as possible and listened as Orion took the floor. It didn’t take long for her to knit her brow. “You too?” A moment later, she realised she’d need to elaborate. “’Limiter helmet’. That’s what my plans called it. I’m not sure what it could be limiting other than… Well, itself, right?”

She stuffed a hand into her pocket, retrieving a Pokeball. There were no prizes for guessing who hid within, but she left it on display for a few seconds. She wouldn’t put it past them to have objections to having two chimeras in the same room. Hell, even she wasn’t sure that it would end well.

“Frankie doesn’t get distressed. Not often, anyway. It just seems confused, but in a distant way, all the time. Like it doesn’t really know why it’s there, or what it’s meant to be doing. It’s doing a lot better now, but only because I’ve been working at it since I got it.” Still, it was hard to miss the worry in her voice. All of her Pokemon had a piece of her heart, even the crime that she’d dragged into the world. Whether it was in spite of or despite said crime was another matter.

[attr="class","athread"]A creepy contortionist hadn’t been what Annie had hoped to see that day. Or ever. And yet, there she was, making both her and her Pokemon jolt when she announced herself. Trixie leapt into Annie’s awaiting arms; where her face showed nothing but worry, her trainer’s was dumbfounded. She had too many questions, and the woman, somehow, had failed to answer most of them. Fortuntely, she remembered to click her transciever on, so Bo could parse whatever she couldn't.

The vital information had stuck at least. They were delivering living bombs, and they would blow whether or not they arrived on time. The truck was intent on reaching their destination, one way or another. She and her partner were surrounded by doll… things. And most annoyingly, the woman had called her stupid. That was unfair. Annie hadn’t been given the chance to finish school! Rocket had denied her the chance! She was plenty smart in lots of other areas!

She would have argued as much to the woman, but something about the bombs reminded her that she should prioritize. She knit her brow in frustration as the woman finished speaking, and gave her response: “Trixie, naptime.” Annie’s hands flew to cover her ears. Subject to gravity, the Whimsicott floated towards the floor, but not before she retrieved a blade of grass from within her mane. A Prankster like herself had no trouble playing devilish tricks on strangers, as she was eager to demonstrate; every note played with her Grass Whistle created another charmed musical note, rushing to greet the woman and her orbs. Annie had to hope that they wouldn’t act of their own accord.

“Hey, erm… Bo?” Worry weaved its way into her voice as she spoke into the walkie-talkie – assuming that she’d be given the chance. “Did you hear that, by any chance? Bombs in the truck, weird polka-dot lady, that kind of thing?”

[attr="class","athread"]She knit her brow at his opening move for half a second – that was as long as it took her to remember Django’s old ability. The realization only narrowed her eyes further. When she’d mentioned a quick battle, that wasn’t exactly what she’d had in mind... But she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of hearing that.

“Leia, trail. Wildfire, Head Smash the Kommo-o.” One powerful push off the ground sent the Emboar rocketing forward. His body was overcome by a blue-white aura, transforming him into a bullet of energy rounded at his head. A Reckless charge, no doubt, but that was what Wildfire did best.

Well, that and cause a distraction. Once the pig had taken off, his partner followed suit. Her size allowed her to hide behind the beast, only to reveal herself once Annie continued: “Leia, Draining Kiss on the Kommo-o.” Before she’d finished speaking the words, she was already preparing up the attack. While Triage allowed her to act fast, the type advantage would make the attack fearsome… If she managed to plant a kiss on the dragon at all.

[attr="class","athread"]Buzzinga didn’t see what the fuss was all about. Dragged away from the great outdoors to hover in a booth much too small for him. A Yanmega was hard to read at the best of times, but the most perceptive amongst the Pokemon could tell that it was displeased…

Until his face drew too close to the mic, and got a whiff of the love bug. He drew an inch closer, taking one deep breath to confirm… And then he was off. Flittering and fluttering around the room proved difficult thanks to his size, but damnit, he was too excited to keep still! Erratic movements made for a very eccentric Bug Buzz, which could make for some great samples later down the line.

Taking the microphone’s silence as a sign of disinterest, Buzzinga started to add his own voice to the mix. His frantic chirps and pleading could be considered a song - by definition alone. Even the humans could tell that his was the desperate call of a love-starved bug. Perhaps a lady friend would need to be added to Camp Annie.

[attr="class","athread"]A smile on the head ranger’s face could only mean good things, right? She certainly wasn’t hearing a ‘no’ leave his lips. If anything, an apprenticeship sounded promising. Then he mentioned ‘the wild’. Never finishing school. Annie hadn’t expected a man so far up Hoenn’s chain to be able to relate, but it sounded like he was no stranger to her lifestyle. It almost made her want to share hers. Almost.

But she still had a point to prove to herself.

Her eyes shifted towards Orion, but he admitted he’d never heard of it before confusion could set in. And so it was with hope that she watched Lars. It did a good job of hiding what remained of her unease.

“Eighteen is a few years off for me, but an apprenticeship sounds great. I like the sound of Junior Ranger Annie, and I get along with most people, so I don’t think working under somebody would be a problem.” She dared not look to the man beside her to offer himself up. He’d done more than enough for her to ask that of him.

“Helping…” She tapped a finger to her bottom lip. Between working at the Stray for a roof over her head and finding odd jobs to fund travel and training, her lifestyle left few opportunities for ‘random acts of kindness’. “I try to help. I like to think that most people do, but… I can’t say there’s much that I can prove I did.” She paused. A single eyebrow raised.

“There was the night market attack.” That, at least, she could look to Orion for. “That made the news... and everything else. Hard to forget the time we almost got blown up together.” There was only a hint of the sleepless nights it had caused in her voice.

[attr="class","athread"]Heritage. Formal training. A human family. All things Annie had missed out on, though she imagined that he’d figured as much by that point. That made it all the more interesting to hear how different things might have been. Then again, Annie figured, ‘Dragon Taming Clans’ couldn’t have been all that common. “Makes sense. If everybody around me used one type of Pokemon when I was little, I’d probably feel strongly about them too.”

As he went on, explaining that the specialty wasn’t quite that, her brow knit. It wasn’t until he turned the conversation to her Pokemon that she addressed what she thought was the Donphan in the room. “That… At that point, it’s not really specializing, is it? Having a bunch of people in a ‘dragon-type clan’ that don’t train dragons. And bringing in any Pokemon that can learn a dragon move has to be, like… at least a third of them, right? Moves like Dragon Dance and Pulse can be taught to a lot of Pokemon with a TM, off the top of my head, and cross-breeding adds in even more guys.” Her party noticed the Wailmer passing by, but without a threat or a command from Annie, they were content to watch it go.

[attr="class","athread"]Circe wasn’t the only Pokemon itching for a fight. The Blast went unused, but it was too late – they’d earned the attention, and apparent ire, of a Hawlucha on the edge. The bird spread his wings wide, presumably yelling at them about watching their aim or looking for a beatddown.

Annie, having wiped her face of the initial surprise, watched in silence. Mildly amused eyes flicked from her Pokemon, to the stranger, to the stranger’s Pokemon, then back to her’s. She bent her knees, bringing herself closer to his level, so that she could place a hand atop his head and force nods out of him.

“What he means to say is that he knows that accidents happen, and it’s no problem!” Her fighter growled his disapproval, which only prompted more nods. “You’ll have to excuse Lucha Libre. He’s been cooped up for too long, and he’s just been waiting for an excuse to let loose. He’s fine. Physically.”

It took mere seconds for the fog’s effects to announce themselves. Half of the racers slowed to clutch and cough and wheeze. The Weavile hit the floor before they reached the first corner, too fragile to overcome the smog. That left Celeste, Hades and the Salazzle, the latter of which had decided to crawl along the cave walls.

Annie hugged her mount’s neck as they rounded the first corner. As it happened, few Pokemon could drift like a vehicle, but boy, did the Rapidash try. Annie’s hair dragged across the floor as they came much too close for comfort, but her faith in her partner was rewarded by a successful turn. They had a real chance at winning…

Or would, if not for some outside interference. It wouldn’t take long for an observant trainer to find the source of their troubles. A girl no older than twenty had shoved her way to the front of the audience. At a shady race, that meant nothing, but the Shroomish in her arms was a cause for concern. A Shroomish that appeared to be charging its next attack, no less.
