Strange. Annie knew Clamp was a good fighter, but that last attack had struck surprisingly well. There were a few possibilities: either the Scizor had landed a lucky hit, the Lurantis had been very good at hiding its pain until that moment, or the Lurantis had a weakness they hadn’t accounted for. Whatever it was, they’d find out soon enough… She hoped.

First, there was the counterattack to handle – or rather, the counter-scent. The Scizor remained still, pupils dilating as he took in the smell. The inaction was noticed by his trainer, even from behind, and the remnants of the move reaching her let her know he was under a spell. Hell, she wouldn’t have minded giving the Lurantis a big hug-

Annie quickly shook her head, calling out to her comrade. “Stay focused, Clamp! We’ve got this, as long as you keep it together!” Words of encouragement helped her fighter blink away some of his delusions, but his eyes told that he wasn’t rid of them. “Get back in there with an X-Scissor!”

In a battle of what she’d assumed to be two bug types fighting each other, she wouldn’t have called for the move at all. After that Wing Attack, however… She was willing to take a chance. The Lurantis’ response to the attack, if it got hit at all, would put at least one of her theories to rest. It’d all be determined when Clamp moved in, drawing two glowing pincers across the mantis’ chest.

“Hey. Hey, Trixie. C'mere, I’ve got a funny plan.” Annie never took kindly to intruders on her land, but ats long as her berries went unharmed, she could use them for a little fun. She whispered a dastardly plot into the Whimsicott’s ear as rain started to hit the ground. Trixie’s usual grin took on a devilish edge; she nodded went on her way, bouncing and bounding her way towards the Ludicolo.

The cotton ball was half the dancer’s size, but had no less energy. She danced along with the rain summoner, each step prancing her a little further away from the Ludicolo – and the berry farm. The water-type followed, happy to have a partner, and was lured seven dozen metres away from the farm.

That was far enough for Trixie to fire a Hurricane at the unsuspecting intruder. In the blink of an eye, both were rocketing around in the winds, but while the Whimsicott saw no greater pleasure than floating in the gale, her target faced the bad end of a super-effective attack. When it hit the ground, it was near unconscious, and unable to defend itself from a launched Pokeball.

Another Vulpix? No. Frankie’s intense stares weren’t for nothing; it noticed the difference long before Annie did. Just like the other, the fox watched back, cautious but curious. After a long, hard think, Frankie decided to channel one of his fellow Campers. He couldn’t settle into the gesture as naturally as the Zorua did, but Frankie lowered its front paws, raised its back end and rested its head on the former. A play bow, in other words.

It worked, to both of their surprises, convincing the Vulpix to close the distance between them. Frankie remained near-motionless, as if it was the one with something to fear, as the little one sniffed and pawed around it. Only then did Annie notice its colour was slightly difference from the others they’d come across, and realised that Frankie had found them yet another rarity. She stepped in, silently offering a Pokeball to the fox. “You want to be friends, little dude? We’re on a permanent road trip, and I want you along for the ride.” The Vulpix didn’t shy away, and that was good enough for Annie!

With her final Safari Ball used, their time in the Safari was up. Annie gave her chimera a softened smile, which quickly became a grin from ear to ear, and then a tight hug and kiss atop its forehead. “Thank you, Frankie. It drew its head in and gave the girl the gentlest of nuzzles. It was, as far as it knew, a way to show that her words were reciprocated. That it appreciated her too.

Some would say that she babied the beast, and she couldn’t fault them for that, nor would she mind the comment. Frankie was… different, in many ways, but none of them had to be bad. They just meant that Annie had to spend extra time with the Pokemon, teaching it the right ways to approach situations.
More importantly, she still felt a tad guilty about the circumstances of its birth. Showing it love was one of the few ways she knew to compensate for that.

It was hard to tell, but the beast tried to listen sometimes. When another snowy Vulpix arrived, Frankie still stared, but seemed to be trying to make it less intense. It was hardly noticeable to a stranger, but Annie kept a close eye on her partners, especially the anomaly that was Type: Null. She’d seen enough to know when it was trying, and its effort drew a more genuine smile out of her.

The Vulpix stared back, curious but still wary of the giant. Given a few seconds, he would up and walk off, but it was less out of fear and more out of a disinterest in approaching. “Well, that’s… a start!” The wild one’s casual walk was a sign of progress to Annie, and for it Frankie earned a pat atop its back. It didn’t react – it rarely did -, but that wouldn’t stop her.
