The next Pokemon to appear wasn’t lucky enough to receive mercy, or smart enough to flee. Frankie barely slowed its charge as it switched targets to the Darumaka. Annie hadn’t ordered the attack, but she let it slide, mostly because she would have anyway. In a scene not out of place in a soccer match, the snowball was sent knocked into the air by a Tackle, throwing it back into the forest it had come from.

The gift had gone down… poorly, to say the least. Though she’d succeeded in distracting the target, Najwa came off as fairly ungrateful. The present was a little crude, sure, but that was money she could’ve spent on food!

Meanwhile, Kit had managed to engage his target, and even shoo away the meddling girl. The mistletoe was moving into position, just as Annie had said… But the man was speaking. Kit was fairly clever by Pokemon standards, but he had a long way to go before he could understand anything that the stranger was saying. In cases like those, there was only one thing for the trickster to do.

Smile, nod, and back away.

Not that it mattered. Nature itself, it seemed, had conspired to foil their schemes. Calls of an impending disaster draw the attention of trainer and Pokemon alike. They locked eyes. ‘Najwa’ abandoned the plan, rushing over to embrace his trainer, who had been stunned into inaction. If snow or debris were to strike them, it would strike him first.

Fortunately, it never came to that; darkness was the only thing to strike them. Kit hoped that in the chaos and the shadows, nobody would notice him regaining his true form. Once the sounds and rumbles faded, Annie looked up at her partner. “You good?” The Zoroark nodded, releasing his trainer, and the two surveyed their surroundings.

Reality set in, and a concerned look showed itself on her face. “Er… Okay. So this doesn’t look great. Not terrible, but not great either. We can fix this, right?” Even she didn’t sound convinced. “Scratch that, don’t answer it. Might be a good time to skedaddle. We’re gonna need a getaway.” Now that was a word the beast understood. He went for the windows, using Night Slash to start carving a path through the new hole in the building.

That left Annie to act as Disaster Fixer… as decided by herself, in that moment. “Hey, hey!” She called to the room. “We could use some lights in here! If you’ve got some Pokemon out, Kit’s trying to claw a way out over there!” She paused. Was it too dark to see a mostly black Pokémon? "Say hello, Kit!" The Zoroark's calls would help him to be found, if anybody was having an extra hard time seeing.

TL;DR: Operation Mad Stacks has failed (kim cole-essam, @bean4). Annie and her Zoroark attempt to start making an exit, and rally for others to do the same.

“Didn’t I already deal with you?” It might have been the same Chespin. It probably wasn’t, but either way Annie had little interest in a second one. “Frankie, would you go and chase it off?” The speed at which her Pokemon bolted made her suspect that he was going for a full offensive, but he didn’t even get that far. At the sight of a chimera five times his size charging towards him, the Chespin went for a tactical retreat.

Annie started to wonder if other Pokemon were a little scared of Frankie.

Frankie wouldn’t allow himself to be caught off guard twice. The ghastly wails in the distance were enough to send its eyes darting about, searching for the next target. Type: Null may not have been a natural intimidator, but something about a giant, mysterious, glaring helmet-bound beast managed to do the trick regardless. The Phantump thought twice and decided to turn tail.

The sounds of battle drew more curious beasts out of their hidey holes. Both trainer and Pokemon had been too focused on the fleeing Vulpix to notice a Voltorb rolling into battle. Its Electro Ball was more than enough to get their attention, though it would soon come to regret earning it. A thumbs-down from Annie sent Frankie charging to retaliate with an Iron Head. Not enough to knock it out in one attack, but enough to send it rolling back to where it came from – and to teach it not to come back.

“Nothing weird about it. I like camping too.” Hers was an interest born more out of necessity than choice, but she’d made the most of it. “It doesn’t take much to set up. You can get all the people you care about with you. They can all sit together and enjoy some food or tell stories, and…” The girl’s smile had grown weaker, but it was much more sincere. “It’s nice. Makes it feel like family.”

It sounded like they were kindred spirits. After all, if he’d had family to be with, she’d be able to see them. All she saw was a handful of Pokemon, but she wasn’t about to ask why. If his reasons were anything like hers, they weren’t the kind for casual conversation. A bittersweet smile, perhaps, would be enough to tell him that she understood. “Not that these guys aren’t pretty much family now!” The Whimsicott’s mouth was half full, but that didn’t stop her from letting out a cheer muffled by the blanket. “So we end up camping out most nights. It’s a good way to get everybody feeling like a real team.” That, and the company helped distract them all from the weather. In that regard, warming up with the stranger worked just as well as her Pokemon did. "Besides, it makes sure we're keeping to Camp Annie Tenet Number Three: Sleep well, eat well! Because we won't get far on an empty stomach or dull mind."

There it was. The reason she’d returned to the Safari, poking its head out of snow-tipped grass. The two locked eyes. The Vulpix, realising trouble was approaching, made to flee the scene. “Okay, now you can attack.” She nodded to Frankie, who was more than happy to oblige.

Annie thought she heard something close to an exhale, but it was a far cry from the yells and shouts that proceeded most Pokemon’s attacks. A white triangle formed in front of Frankie’s face, each of its corners bearing a different-coloured orb. From it, a beam fired and knocked the Vulpix off its feet. The second and final step of Annie Mei’s Forced Friendship was for her to lob a Pokeball at the target, claiming it as her own.

It was hard for her to keep a smile off her face, seeing how enthusiastic the man was about his life and his goals. Hell, even the fact that he had specific goals was admirable, and a lot more than she could say about herself. It was easy for her to not realise that the man had lived almost twice as long as she had to figure himself out, which only made him seem more impressive! “That’s so cool! And really sweet. I love seeing people inspired by their Pokemon! And, you know, taking good care of them. These little guys look loved.” Somewhere behind her, a Weavile growled. His lack of enthusiasm drew Annie back to his side, giving him a three-fingered poke to the cheek. “Oh, you know that I love you. Why else would I put up with your grumpy butt?” Annie smiled. Blitz grimaced, but again, he didn’t shy away.

In short order, both were back beside Florian and company, catching his words about having a Pokedex. The girl nodded early, the implications flying over her head. “Of course! Every researcher needs a tool of the trade. Without it, they won’t know if they’re discovering something new.” She was totally clueless, right up until he showed her the spare. Few could claim to have stopped Annie’s mouth running, but for a few seconds he’d managed it. Her eyes were still wide, but with confusion instead of happiness. It wouldn’t last. Soon enough, his meaning hit her.

“…A-… Are you serious?” He may as well have offered her a stack of cash, and he would have seen just as much disbelief in her eyes. Her eyes scanned his, searching for malice, trickery, any hint that his gesture was anything but genuine. She wouldn’t find it, because it didn’t exist.

Her mouth opened wide too, but for once, she couldn’t find the right words… Not when a gesture could do the job just as well. Hopefully Florian had no issues with personal space, because she gave no warning before she pounced, wrapping both arms around him. He’d earned a tight hug from an overjoyed trainer.

“You’re serious! Thank you, thank you! Oh, and yes please!” She’d stopped looking up at him, and judging by Blitz’ inquisitive stare, he’d guessed why. Annie was a big, strong trainer (or so she told everybody), and big strong trainers couldn’t be seen as anything less! She wasn’t crying, not yet, but the occasional wavering of her estatic voice betrayed her emotions. “I’ll fill the whole thing out! Or try to! I’ll take really good care of it and learn a bunch, but really I’m just surprised that you wanted to give me something! That’s so… thank you!”

Compared to Snowball, the Pineco was much less exciting. He bounced into the trainer’s personal space, only to be halted by Frankie’s glare. Null only broke its glare to look at Annie, awaiting her orders. The girl giggled, giving her partner a tickle under chin. It might have earned a reaction, if not for the beast’s helmet. Annie’s smile faded some. “One day I’ll get a smile out of you… If you even have a mouth under there.”

On they went.
