His words stung, and it showed. Just a little twitch in her left eye, a slight wince. She didn’t have much, but she did have her pride. She was also going to have frostbite soon if she didn’t suck it up and let his pity slide. Besides, the food smelled good. Really good. And her Pokemon didn’t need to suffer for her stubbornness, right?

“Maybe I’ll… stay for a little while.” The Whimsicott raised her stubby arms and cheered, undeterred by (or more likely, not understanding) the hesitation. Annie closed the distance between the two trainers, taking the offered tail. The Vulpix took that as a cue to dig in as well, nibbling on the one left on the ground. “…Thank you.” She was quieter than before, largely thanks to his words and his laugh. No, that wasn’t fair and she knew it. Even if he felt for her bad, he meant well. “Thank you, really.” She tried again, louder and more confidently than before. She even forced a bit of a smile on for him, coming closer to her demeanour when she’d arrived… Before he’d started asking questions.

She took the blanket with her free hand, drawing it over herself. A pat of the blanket prompted Trixie to hurry to her side, under the covers and into Annie’s lap. Every other bite of the grilled tail would be offered to the cotton ball. She left the other end of the cloth hanging, just in case the man didn’t have a spare. “I don’t think I’ve ever sat in a Pokemon’s lap before, and I don’t think that’ll change today. No offence. Besides, I have Sune to keep me warm. Sometimes.” The Vulpix perked her head up, realised that she wasn’t needed, and went straight back to munching.

“…What are you doing out here, then? This isn’t the kind of weather most people want to be hanging around in.”

The girl jabbed a thumb into her chest. “Name’s Annie Mei. Up-and-coming trainer extraordinaire. Owner and curator of Camp Annie. Current thinker of third title.” She gave a focused stare to the ceiling for a few seconds before a sigh left her. “I’ll think of something later.”

She turned her attention to the large man instead. She was happy to impress a man, but not if it was because he had rock-bottom standards to begin with! “You meet a pair of girls in the middle of a cave, and you think they can’t handle a few wild Pokemon?” She pulled an unamused face – her own little form of revenge. “Sounds like you’ve got to rethink the way you see things and think of people.”

Out of the corner of her eye, she could see Bolt’s fur rising; cackles of electricity followed shortly after. He’d seen his next target, and it’d make for a good demonstration. “Observe. Bolt, Discharge!” She didn’t know what he was targeting until the attack fired, but she’d known the Shinx long enough to trust his judgement…. And to not embarrass her in front of strangers. Streaks of lightning struck a Sliggoo poking out from behind a rock, prompting it to teeter out from its hiding spot.

Annie got a good look at the gooey beast, turned to the onlookers and quickly decided she’d make it her own. A Pokeball was drawn and lobbed towards the beast, beaning it on the forehead. Bolt pranced over to collect the ball once it stopped shaking, his spirits lifted by Annie’s encouragement. “That was some good guarding, Bolt! Keep those big eyes looking for threats and we’ve got nothing to fear.”

“Excuse me! Sir! Everything on Camp Annie Farm is property of Camp Annie!” In the absence of a scarecrow (or the funds to pay for one), Annie’s yelling worked just as well. The Impidimp stopped two feet away from a berry tree, side-eyeing the trainer.

“That means back off, gremlin.” The beast lifted his tongue towards the fruit. Annie pulled out a Pokeball. The tongue fell. She took a step forward. He took two back. That was enough to prompt Annie to sic a Pokemon on him. Ponyta charged forward to defend their precious berries, greeting the little devil with a Low Kick to the face. Once the beast was down, a Pokeball followed suit.

Everything in the garden belonging to her wasn’t a warning, it was a promise.

She laid eyes upon a man, instead of the beast she’d been hoping for. A smug, overly dressed man that had come to question her methods. Annie didn’t look impressed, but before she could give her retort, the first of many fish took on her ‘challenge’. Unfortunately, the Alolamola didn’t have a strategy for fighting out of water, and had to flop across the beach to get close to them. Funny, and sad, but still a threat.

“Good things come to those who wait, old man!” Mirth found her way into her voice too, though it quickly evolved into outright excitement. “Clamp, you’re up first with an X-Scizor!” A Pokeball launched, and a Pokemon revealed. The metal bug sprang into action, his pincers gaining a green glow. As he landed before the fish, he bore them down upon it, bringing an early end to its battle plans. “And return to sender!” The water-type was unceremoniously sent flying back into the ocean, and Annie turned back around to face the man. A raised eyebrow and a slight smirk awaited any more clever comments.

Few people noticed her clothes, or at least cared enough to comment on it, so his words earned a raised eyebrow from her. The look relaxed into a small smile as he offered her a place at the fire, and she took a step towards him… Only to stop once he started asking questions. The girl turned her head away, showing a shy side for a moment – or perhaps an embarrassed one.

“My other outfit is all smelly, and it’s not like it’s any warmer.” She turned to meet his eyes; hers seemed a little more determined, or stubborn. “This is what I’ve got, so I’ve got to make the best of it.” Her tone suggested that it was just as much a proud declaration as it was a fact of life. Still, her eyes narrowed, as if anticipating his criticism, or laughter, or anything that would warrant her going on the defensive. Perhaps that was why she stayed standing, even as her pair of Pokemon stared up at the man like they were straight out of Oliver Twist. The cold starting to settle against her skin wasn’t enough to make her budge, either… Not until she could read the man’s reaction.

Nothing about the process of getting and maintaining a piercing sounded appealing to the girl, and it showed. He could have explained the concept of cooties to her and gotten the same reaction. Still, she’s kind enough to spare him her comments, beyond a “…I guess. To each their own, right?” Her question had gone mostly unanswered, but if calling him out on that meant having to endure more talk about putting holes in himself, then she’d happily pass.

Instead, she looked down, hoping to find Bolt. Of course, her Pokemon had taken her moment of distraction as a chance to wander off and pick a fight. The roars of a Pyroar helped her find her Pokemon, who was sinking his teeth into the beast with a Crunch. “I swear, I’m going to get a leash for you some day,” she grumbled, but unlike last time, she didn’t sound concerned. Bolt was small, but his intimidation tactics often meant that one move was enough to scare off a wild Pokemon. Just as expected, the Pyroar began to back away once his attacker let up, and turned tail shortly after.

A smug Shinx marched back to his trainer’s side; she had a disapproving look for him, but decided to keep the rest for later. “If you own a place, shouldn’t you be over there instead of here?” She turned back to Evan. “Clothes are one thing, but even I know that there isn’t much business to do out here. Especially not with me. The only business I’ve got is selling berries and kicking butt.” And even that was debatable, as he’d already seen.

“Dude, come on. It’s going to get dark soon. There’s no way you’re getting down there while the sun’s out, and then you’re gonna get yourself eaten!” The Delibird marched past her, as best as it could whilst lugging its own tail down the path. Annie huffed and followed suit. She knew from experience that a Delibird meant well, but the little beast’s eagerness to give a gift was going to get it murdered.

Annie didn’t want to see a good Pokemon go down, even if it was too stubborn for its own good. And so she’d found herself tailing it for the past half hour as it dragged itself down the mountain. In a worst-case scenario, her team could defend the cargo Pokemon, but it was getting darker, colder, and more dangerous by the minute. A second pair of hands to help wouldn’t go unnoticed.

Another day, another training session. Annie’s travels had taken her to a tiny beach outside of Mauville for a round of rapid-fire training. Annie had a bad habit of sending her Pokemon out into highly questionable and high-risk situations, giving them next to no time to take in the scene before they were under attack. Instead of being more considerate to her team, Annie had decided that teaching them to adapt quickly was the best solution.

That was why a shabbily-dressed, occasionally shivering girl in a tracksuit stood at the water’s edge, calling out to the wilds nearby. “Wild Pokemon of Hoenn! Up-and-coming trainer extraordinaire Annie Mei is here, accepting all challenges! Step up with you’re brave, and I’ll beat your butt!” Perhaps the untamed beasts wouldn’t understand her, but her obnoxious calls were sure to summon some.

Trixie found the stranger’s camp first. The Whimsicott had been searching for berries too, decorating her coat with them, when she spotted a Pikachu running off with some. She bounded through the bushes to lay eyes on the trainer, then ran back to report to her trainer.

Moments later, Shinra’s camp was invaded. Annie announced herself with a “Hello there, stranger!” and a wave. As always, the girl was very poorly dressed for the weather.
