Florian, and indeed the Sylveon who'd been the target of an assault, is far more wary of the second Meowstic that they spot among the confines of the safari.

It is clearly a different specimen, with fur predominantly white rather than blue, but he hesitates all the same.

"Let's... just avoid that way for now, no?"

His Sylveon does not need to hear such a suggestion twice: he bounds ahead of his trainer in his eagerness to put as much distance between himself and the psychic feline as possible.

Florian is sure that they have won. The Steelix rears back, trapped between the focal points of their attacks, and the blinding blast of a solar beam arcs toward the metallic titan... and bounces right off, harmlessly scattering against the cavern wall.[break][break]

Steelix thrashes, and Florian cries out, "Joli!"[break][break]

But he had not realised the danger fast enough. A brutal swipe of its tail lands with a double-edged fury, slamming the Sylveon against the wall. Joli is a sturdy Pokemon and struggles back to his paws, but Florian knows his partner is suffering. White fur is smudged with dust and debris and the Sylveon trembles even as he attempts to build up another blast of his mystical fire.[break][break]

He does not get the chance. Red light swallows him up, and Florian cowers against the wall as the behemoth's snarl shakes the earth.[break][break]

"Get off the ground NOW!"[break][break]

Panic is paralyzing, but more overpowering is the fear of being left on the ground when the titan reemerges. Florian curls his hand around a pokeball and reveals his saving grace in a flash of light: the broad white wings of a Togekiss upon whose back he throws himself, clenching tight and squeezing his eyes shut that he might not have to watch the ground lurch beneath them.[break][break]

"FLY, Juliette!""[break][break]

She does.[break][break]

He hears the creature break the surface, the screams of the miners growing more distant as they rise above the threat with extreme speed, but the professor does not open his eyes until the sound of his name cuts through the chaos.[break][break]

"W-We're here!" he calls back, the wind threatening to steal his words. "Are you all right?"

Florian has to restrain himself from rushing the Chansey when he sees it, excitement toward one of his favourite non-fairy-type Pokemon clashing with the goal he'd set for himself upon buying his ticket: Eevee only. They were incredibly rare, hard to acquire. He was not here for anything else.

Joli, perhaps sensing his trainer's internal dilemma, flicks his large ears and cants his head in confusion.

"I know, Joli, but we can't," Florian insists. "Quick, before she sees us — I-I wouldn't want to get attached, or to hurt her feelings..."

So they rush off like the fools they were, Florian's pamphlet fluttering in the wind of their sprint.

He'd mentioned his profession and background during his introductory segment... which meant that Chandler had been there for most, if not all of the lecture. He's self-conscious, but flattered in the same breath. She could have ignored it all in favour of just cutting to the point, but she'd actually listened.[break][break]

"It's very fun!" he says, enthusiastic, and then tempers it a little with, "Well, I think so, at least! It can be hard work, and the pay's... not the greatest, certainly not comparable to a lab position, but I don't mind that so much!"[break][break]

Chandler, on the other hand, seems less than pleased with her job. Florian's expression pinches with sympathy; that didn't sound like the job description of a journalist. That sounded like being a lackey.[break][break]

"Have you cast a line out for better positions?" he wonders, curious. "HNN, maybe? You said you worked freelance with them sometimes, do they hire journalists? I am not very familiar with the process, but I know they are popular here."[break][break]

They seemed to be the main news network, if he were to judge by how much he'd seen of them.

"They make wonderful companions," Florian agrees of Eevee, nodding. There's a brief pause for consideration. He doesn't normally open up to people about personal matters, but he likes Alec. "Joli is actually a support Pokemon! I used to have bad panic attacks, and this one was instrumental in helping me through that."

He leans down to ruffle his companion's soft fur. Joli purrs like a cat, butting up against his hand and wrapping his ribbons around Florian's arm, drawing in all of his positive energies.

"I think Eevee is a common choice because they are able to evolve differently depending on a trainer's individual personality." Naturally, Florian's Eevee became a Sylveon, but he'd seen that Espeon were a fairly common evolution for others who'd received their partner through the same program. It's psychic capabilities were supposedly very useful in understanding its trainer, but Florian thinks Joli's managed to understand his needs just fine! "Which evolution do you prefer?"

He can't help but smile as he watches Alec interact with the Ribombee: one of his favourite Pokemon, and a Cutiefly had been one of his first, after Joli of course.

He releases Abeille from her ball, and she flits around him in her customary greeting before buzzing curiously over to Alec. She offers him a pollen puff, her way of saying 'hello'.

"Ribombee are wonderful little creatures, aren't they?"

The rock Pokemon blend seamlessly with their surroundings, and Florian takes no notice of them.

Were it not for the gravity of the situation they found themselves in, Florian might've blushed as Adrian did away with the tattered remains of his shirt. As it was, he takes in the not-fully-healed injuries along the other man's back and winces, sympathetic.[break][break]

He recognizes what's happening as the sunlight begins to coalesce atop the Vileplume's flower. A powerful move, but easy to miss a thrashing target. Adrian's got that covered as well, his Corviknight nearly blinding Florian with a flash of light off its shining wings, but the more help, the better, right? Blinking watery eyes, Florian quickly goes over what moves his partners knew.[break][break]

Arceus, he wasn't much of a fighter.[break][break]

"Ah, try to pen it in!" he calls to his Pokemon, conveniently positioned on either side of the massive steel serpent. It snarls and ducks its head as the Corviknight dives at it. "Again, Joli, but aim to the side! Lisette, Aurora Beam!"[break][break]

He's too worried about hitting the Corviknight to chance another direct blast of mystical fire when they're all so bunched up. Instead, the Sylveon bathes the air with his flames, forcing the Steelix to curl in on itself and present a bigger target, lest it find itself scorched by the magical blaze. Lisette mirrors the Sylveon with her aurora beam, frost marking a path along the ground next to the coiled serpent.[break][break]

Florian looks to Rover and Adrian and gives a nod, a silent 'go for it'.

Meowstic was adorable, and unbeknownst to Florian, that's exactly what this one relied upon. As the professor stopped to admire the fluffy psychic cat, it suddenly turns around and sucker punches his Sylveon!

Even Joli seems startled, albeit not very hurt. He stumbles back from the offender and bares his sharp canines in silent threat. Florian's not entirely sure what to do: he doesn't want to pick a fight with the Safari Pokemon, but this one had hurt his partner!

In the beat it takes for him to mull over a decision, the Meowstic grows bored, yawning and prancing off.

Joli makes to follow it, but only gets a few steps before he suddenly slumps forward, asleep. Florian can't help but giggle as he kneels down next to his partner, squeezing the juice of a chesto into his mouth.

After the success of her first job at Castanet Studios, Florian hadn't hesitated to sign Jonquille up for another job as soon as a suitable opening had become available.

The tiny fairy with her ring of flowers was delighted to have such trust placed in her and took her task incredibly seriously.

Almost immediately upon realising her talents of rejuvination, the Comfey is assigned to the task of brightening up some of the arrangements that needed a little extra touch. Perhaps it might be alarming to see her pluck the flowers from their carefully-arranged positions, but they were replaced just as delicately with their vitality renewed.

What arrangements the Comfey attended to would emit a tantalizing scent, as well. The aromatherapy mingles with the sweet scents emitted by the Vileplume, strengthening both. As she works, a grassy terrain begins to bloom around her workstation, refreshing any nearby.

"Eevee is my favourite, too." Florian laughs softly at the realisation: what a coincidence! Joli had been the professor's first Pokemon, and so his evolutionary line had secured a firm place in his heart. "I hope to acquire all of them some day, but as of right now I've only got this little troublemaker."

Joli offers a cheeky chirp, and the professor chuckles as he gives him a fond scratch behind the ears.

"They are quite rare, but I've heard rumours that the Safari here sometimes acquires them! Though perhaps those I heard it from were mistaken... still, if you haven't visited the Safari, I'd recommend it! They're constantly rotating the selection, it's really quite wonderful."

He'd obtained his dazzling Alolan Ninetales there, grouchy little diva that she was.

Alec rushes off to rescue a Dedenne, but seems delighted upon his return to be offered the Pokedex. It makes Florian feel good to boost the spirits of others, and he's all smiles.

"Just be careful with it," he laughs, displaying his own with the crack in the corner of the screen. "They are durable, but still breakable. I have been meaning to get mine fixed, but..."

But he always needs it for something! Like the Mr. Mime that approaches them, copying Florian's movements as he shakes his head in exasperation toward himself and pockets the dex. Upon spotting the admittedly-quite-unsettling creature, the professor's smile widens.

"Are you looking for something, darling?"

It performs an exaggerated shrug, prompting a giggle. Florian thinks Ruby Walker would adore this one; he's traded with the girl in the past, and knows she's got a penchant for psychic-types. Did she have this one...? He's not sure, but pulls out a pokeball nevertheless. He wouldn't be opposed to keeping the mime around, given that it was also a fairy.

"I know someone that you'd get along with very well," he says to the Pokemon. He offers the ball. "Can I introduce you?"

"I have never had Tauros steak," Florian muses as he continues to browse the menu. "I am not much for red meat, though. I prefer seafood."[break][break]

He, too, orders the Clauncher: it's been a while since he's dined at a fancy restaurant, and even longer since he'd tasted such a classic Kalosian dish.[break][break]

Conversation turns once again to more personal matters, but Florian's smile suggests his ease with the subject. He blushes under the compliment, ducking his head. "Ah, I am sure they were not all there for me! There is a lot of excitement surrounding Galar and all the new species; many Hoennian trainers are just eager to learn more. I am — not usually in the public eye, actually." Stage fright kept him from accepting a lot of similar opportunities: he saved up his confidence for things that were important to him, like this had been. "I'm a field researcher for the most part!"[break][break]

Perhaps she already knew? How much had she learned about him through her research? To ask seems too blunt, so he holds off.

Florian's relief at seeing Adrian crawl out from his pinned position is short-lived: the other man's movements are stiff with injury. Steelix's bulk separates the two men, and Florian's fingers flutter next to his belt in hazy panic. He had to help, somehow, but—[break][break]

—but Adrian's got it covered, his Vileplume doing its best to mend what damage had been done, and the professor lets himself breathe.[break][break]

"No — stay back!" His panicked order is directed at the men who'd thought to approach the chaos, some of whom have lost their footing on the quaking ground. Florian thinks fast: "Lisette, protect them!"[break][break]

The Frosmoth flits about the battlefield with her wide guard, doing her best to shield everyone from the rockfall, but Florian notices the way the shimmering field flickers under strain. She can't maintain it for too long, otherwise it'll fail. They need to take care of the Steelix.[break][break]

Adrian sends out a monstrous bird of steel, and Florian's Sylveon startles before recognizing they're on the same side. The pink-and-white creature lets out another stream of mystical fire, his aim slow and careful so as not to clip the shimmering wings of the metal bird.[break][break]

Frosmoth drops its wide guard under the strain, attempting to make up for it by firing an aurora beam at the rampaging Steelix.
