The pitch of Florian's voice rises in panic as he ducks for cover behind a weathered shed. A shadow ball bursts against the corner of the structure with a soft hiss. Why had he agreed to this, again?[break][break]

In contrast to his trainer's alarm and evident fright, Florian's Sylveon leaps into the danger with abandon. In his attempt to protect Emolga from the barrage of fiery attacks, the fairy-type found himself grazed by one of the errant wisps.[break][break]

He stumbles upon landing, lifting his burned paw, then turns to the offending Litwick. Psychic energy pulses about his paws. His eyes flash. The embers fired by the Litwick collide with his pink-and-white fur... to no further effect. He'd swapped skills with his target, and the ribboned fairy flashes his canines in a cheeky grin.[break][break]

Turning to the Oricorio that had led the charge, Sylveon bathes his foe in an empowered mystical fire.[break][break]

Florian's heart pounds loud in his ears. He can't see the others from his cover. "Is everyone all right?"[break]

"Joli was my first as well! Though he was only an Eevee, then."[break][break]

His fond smile compliments a distant expression as his thoughts stray back to the early days. He owed a lot to his Sylveon, and he grins wide as Reagan's compliment of the ribboned Pokemon draws him back to the present.[break][break]

"That is his name, in fact," he laughs. "Joli. Kalosian for 'pretty'. It was not meant to be a name, but it stuck." Really, it had been a term of affection, the same way he called his Pokemon darlings. But Joli wouldn't answer to any other name. "Oh, yes, I adore fairies. I am a professor! Fairy-types are my chosen field of study."[break][break]

He allows Reagan to take the lead as they head inside, and he smiles at the children when they thunder down the stairs.[break][break]

"Allo, children! It is lovely to meet you all."[break][break]

Noticing Alfie's eyes on him, Joli pads up to the shy member of the trio in order to greet him. Alex seems to take offense to not being the center of attention, however, and he reaches out and tugs at one of Joli's ribbons.[break][break]

Florian winces at his partner's cry of pain, nails digging into his palm.[break][break]

"Oh, please don't do that!" Alex turns an indignant gaze on him. He doesn't let go, and Joli casts a nervous look up at his trainer. "I know those look like ribbons, but they're actually a part of him! It would be like someone tugging on your hair!"

It's a relief to exit the confines of Meteor Falls and breathe in the open air once again. Florian didn't mind caves for short expeditions, but as the hours dragged on his claustrophobia made it feel as if the walls were steadily closing in.

Shielding his eyes from the sun, the professor glances about to get his bearings. Was that Rustboro in the distance? He checks his map, confirming as much. Hoenn was still largely new to him.

Wind carries the salty air from the ocean to his left and caresses the long grasses and trees of a small thicket. It's there he decides to go. He hasn't gotten far into the small grove before he encounters another, canting his head with a friendly smile. His Sylveon offers a greeting of his own, his trill startling a flock of Taillow from a nearby tree.

"Allo! I have heard there are fairies in this area. Is that true?"

The girl cuts herself off mid-sentence, and though Florian has half a mind to glance around in an attempt to figure out why, his Rapidash seems to suss out that the attention has been directed toward her.[break][break]

Ever a diva, Laverre snorts and paws at the ground, as if daring the girl to laugh.[break][break]

Oblivious, Florian shakes his head. "I'm... sorry about her, she's in a bit of a mood because of the sand in her hooves, I suppose."[break][break]

Laverre snorts again, nudging against him. It's a light gesture that nevertheless causes her trainer to stumble a little from the force of it, given that the Rapidash was much larger and heavier than he.[break][break]

"And no, she wasn't causing any trouble," Florian assures the girl belatedly, once he's regained his balance. His smile down at the Ponyta is gentle and fond. "I just wanted to make sure that she hadn't wandered off and gotten lost! But I'm glad to know that her trainer wasn't far off."[break][break]

Even if she had seemed completely distracted before he'd approached.

"I don't, actually! Mostly I rely on my Togekiss, or take public transit if it's too far!" He did know how to drive and had earned his license, but anxiety had crippled his confidence in his abilities. He leaves that part out.[break][break]

"So it's OK if you drive!"[break][break]

He didn't have his Togekiss on him, after all, and she'd never carried two passengers at once before even if he had.

Florian chuckles, finding he can relate. "I know what you mean. I have always preferred to learn by doing. I suppose that's why I do field work instead of lab work." He'd suffered through the written requirements of his coursework for as long as he'd needed to earn his qualifications, but he didn't miss it in the least. It was much more fun to go out and film wild Pokemon than to read about the experiences of others.[break][break]

His gaze is curious as he watches Adrian dislodge a chunk of the apparently-light material from the wall. He's leaning forward to get a better look, lips parted with a forming question, when the ground suddenly rumbles beneath their feet.[break][break]

Florian stumbles back and catches himself on the rough rock of the wall, scraping his palms, but he'd gotten off light. His eyes go wide as he watches Adrian slip beneath the massive serpentine body that emerges from the rift in the earth. It's as if his heart has stopped, chest tight and breath stuck, but Adrian's call for help snaps him out of it.

Joli is already standing at attention, surprising ferocity in his bright eyes as he awaits command.

"You can breathe fire, now, darling! Go! Skill Swap, first!"

Canines flash with the Sylveon's answering war-cry, an adorable sound made intimidating only by the way he leaps at the Steelix without hesitation or fear. Swapping skills with his target allows the Sylveon to execute his attack with sheer force, the mystical fire bathing the Steelix in a torrent of bright, hot flame. The rumbling behemoth rears back as the attack superheats its metallic form, smashing its tail against a wall in fury and causing the beginnings of a rock slide.

Florian's released his Frosmoth in this time, and Lisette throws up a wide guard to shield Adrian from tumbling rock and debris.

"She'll cover you, run!"[break][break]

At least if he could get out from the corner he'd been effectively backed into before, they'd have a fighting chance.

Unfortunately for the Arcanine, Florian's Sylveon hasn't caught onto the fact that the fire-type sees this as a game. He seems perfectly content and even amused to watch the dog's antics, but the howl is not reciprocated.

Florian winces sympathetically when Arcanine gets side-tracked by an Ivysaur and bowls it over in an attempt to make a new friend. He's starting to understand what the stranger had meant when he'd implied his Pokemon was a little slow. At least the Ivysaur seems to be the forgiving sort; Florian smiles at the sight, and tilts his head in acknowledgement when a name is given.

"Florian!" he returns. "The Sylveon is Joli."

Hearing his name, Joli flicks his large ears and lets out an excited chirp.

Unfortunately, the Arcanine wasn't the only Pokemon prone to distraction. Joli loved nothing more than to chase birds and butterflies for sport, and upon seeing a Farfetch'd waddling through the route with leek in tow, he crouches down and starts to wiggle his rump.

"Oh, Jo, I wouldn't—"

Joli pounces and Farfetch'd dodges out of the way with surprising agility, whirling around and wielding her leak like a leafy blade to smack the offender between his ears. Sylveon looks more affronted than hurt, and Florian covers his mouth to suppress his laughter.

"I am sorry about him," he says to the bird, apologising for his Pokemon a second time in a short span. "He likes to play, but he won't hurt you. Especially not now! Your aim is impeccable."

She preens herself at the compliment, fluffing up her feathers.

"I bet a bird as brave as you gets bored of this easy route, huh?" She perks up, and he pulls out a Pokeball. "Why don't you tag along?"

Florian's eyes are wide as saucers, full of undisguised wonder at the appearance of an adorable Arcanine. That it's not the brightest slips his attention as he watches it crouch down next to his Sylveon.

Joli tilts his head at the Arcanine's howl, flicking his ears. A pleasant trill follows, the fairy-type's canines flashing in an apparent grin.

The stranger apologises for his Pokemon, then, and Florian's laughter is light and airy in response. "Ah, he seems like a sweetheart! A good boy, indeed; there is no harm done!"

Not noticing the Kecleon, camouflaged as it was, Florian's eyes find an Ivysaur instead. He tracks its movements for a moment before turning his attention back to Jet as a question was posed.

"Scenery, curiosity, the Pokemon." He gestures at the Ivysaur, smiling. "Take your pick! I enjoy the calming atmosphere. Are you here for the same?"

A curious tilt of his head reveals Florian's intrigue before he formulates a response.[break][break]

"A trainers school, ah?" It was interesting to know that there was one in Rustburo, just a journey through the tunnel from where he lived in Verdanturf. "I admit I have always wondered what that was like! I went through regular schooling until university."[break][break]

In truth, it hadn't been his choice. Perhaps that had been why his curiosity toward Pokemon was insatiable as he grew; they were a forbidden fruit until he was old enough to make decisions of his own. Applying for a research program at university in Lumiose had been quite the culture shock, and he'd learned the ropes of training Pokemon alongside the rigorous coursework required to become a professor.[break][break]

The Eeevee that had been his first Pokemon had evolved into the Sylveon that now sat alongside the trainers in the mine, his white fur marred by the dust they produced in chipping away at the walls.[break][break]

Adrian makes progress before Florian, and the professor jumps at the loud sound of the dropped pickaxe and nearly drops his own.[break][break]

Carefully setting it against the wall, instead, he watches Adrian fruitlessly scrabble at the shining shards.[break][break]

"Is there a chisel around, perhaps?" Swinging the pick at the wall might shatter the shards into smaller pieces that would be less valuable to collectors... at least that was Florian's logic. He takes a moment to look around, producing hammer and chisel after a few minutes. He offers them to Adrian. "I found these, if you wanted to try."

Route 101 looks different from the last time he was here. It's clear to Florian that the region is still recovering from the unusual snows it had seen in December, and while the snows were beginning to melt, a certain melancholy hung over the route.

Or maybe it's all in his head.

Footsteps crunch in the detritus of fallen leaves as he strays from the beaten path and into the more wild areas of the admittedly-still-tame route. According to the guide he'd purchased in an attempt to familiarize himself with his new home, this route was popular with beginning trainers due to its rather forgiving nature.

The dragon sightings around Oldale as of late would beg to differ, but that was supposedly out of the ordinary.

Florian looks up as his Sylveon greets someone with a friendly trill, offering a soft smile of his own. "Oh, don't mind him. He gets excited about strangers."
