happy thoughts is ironic coming from him, a man responsible for causing plethoras of unhappy thoughts and feelings; he could likely recall the many incidents which compounded into cillian's trauma; should their roles be swapped, he doubts he could think happily.

He opens his eyes at Theo's question. Though dulled with pain, there's a pride in them at his ability to withstand thus far.[break][break]

"I didn't," he confesses. "Think."[break][break]

Because happy memories were too easily contaminated by the threat of what might shatter them.[break][break]

"Just blanked my mind and focused on breathing, mostly. Doubt that'll work so well for the Naganadel."[break][break]

He doubts it'll work at all, actually. There was a great deal of difference in the toxin's strengths, and he understood the risk he was undertaking in toying with them.

the luxury ball flashes open, revealing the naganadel gifted to him by his fellow underboss years ago. it looks more weathered; the missing arm should be evident enough.

without waiting, he clicks his tongue, and naganadel's stinger finds cillian. it is immediately recalled after.

Cillian barely has time to register the Naganadel's missing arm before its stinger, wholly intact, sinks into his flesh.[break][break]

Colour drains from his face. Where the stinger penetrates, deep purple corruption spreads out from the source, a network of pulsing purple replacing the pale blue of veins.[break][break]

He does not scream. His muscles tense and he pitches forward as much as the straps binding him will allow. A horrible sound escapes from his throat, somewhere between a hiss of pain and a furious growl. The fury is blinding.[break][break]

His heart is pounding wildly, the adrenaline seeing him strain hard enough against the straps to put worrying stress upon them. Blessedly, his Avatarship has never granted him strength. Only the adrenaline boosts it, now, and then not enough to see him break free.[break][break]

It's fortunate, for Beckett. Cillian doesn't speak, but the look in his eyes is murderous. As the toxin continues to spread through his system, the familiar gold of his gaze is struck through with vicious violet.[break][break]

"Let me go."[break][break]

Had Beckett ever heard Lugia speak, he might recognize the thrum of corruption beneath his friend's deep tones.

this is no humane feat; this level of resistance can only be achieved through pain, experience, and exposure; cillian possesses all of these which is how they manage to withstand the damning effects of naganadel's toxin. should their roles be reversed, he's not sure he could do the same.

meeting vicious violet with cold, unwavering hazel, he hears a voice, one that pierced into the depths of his mind only once years ago, back in cillian's office shortly after his arrival in hoenn.

his head shakes, defiant.

"he is your avatar."

but there is no mistaking the PRESSURE he feels nor the dread that thunders with every beat of his heart.

Though the PRESSURE Beckett feels is far from fabricated, it does not originate from the man bound before him.[break][break]

Lugia perches like a malevolent gargoyle on the roof of Blackstone, spiked tail lashing like an irritable cat's. Those who pass in the streets find it harder to breathe, to focus, as the Guardian imparts the discomfort of her fury upon them.[break][break]

Cillian strains once more against his bonds, violet veins bulging where his muscles tense.[break][break]

"It's me, Beckett." Lugia could not reach him. Could not help him. Not here. "Cut the fucking restraints. Coward."[break][break]

Goading him, as he once had as a grunt. Provoking a fight despite the unbeatable odds.[break][break]

Under the influence of the venom, he is all rage and adrenaline. He would fight Arceus itself if it dared show its presence. Though physical restraints maintain their hold, those crafted by Rocket and by Cillian's own self-preservation have burned away.[break][break]

Yet his struggles grow weaker as the venom continues to course through his system. Corrupt as he was, he was no Shadow Pokémon. He could only withstand the toxin for so long before his systems began to fail. Sweat forms a sickly sheen on his skin, his heartbeat too rapid, now.

very interesting. is there a limit to the bond between avatar and their patron? LUGIA may not be physically here but he always thought its influence could spread even from afar. he will have to give this more thought later.

his bayleef readies an action but it is stopped momentarily by a raised hand. he leans in close, delivering his scrutiny with a question.

"would lugia let you die?"

they'll have to find out some other time. for now, AROMATHERAPY washes over them along with HEAL PULSE. theo undoes the restraints, not bothering to step back.

Fury builds, suggesting it'll certainly be interesting when he's spilled THEO BECKETT's blood across the lab's pristine floors.[break][break]

The question certainly doesn't help his desire to strangle his former mentor, though the toxin leaves him too weak to act on this impulse as he's finally released from restraints.[break][break]

Dazed and weakened, he gags at the scent of the AROMATHERAPY and staggers over to the sink, spewing bile down the drain. He's trembling violently, only held up by his white-knuckle grip on the counter.[break][break]

Everything hurts. His veins are burning.[break][break]

The anger fades, however, and Cillian's main concern becomes how tired he feels. He slumps his weight against the counter, lungs shuddering with every intake of breath. A grateful look is shot toward Theo for administering the antidote in time.[break][break]

"She might— ngh, not have a choice." It's breathless and tight with discomfort, but the answer shows his memory of that last question, if little else. "I think she'd tear the lab apart trying, though."[break][break]

He, too, can feel her PRESSURE; but where it had compressed Theo's lungs, it gave Cillian a sense of comfort. His own SHADOW MIASMA saturates the room like a dense fog, having spread uncontrolled during his infection.[break][break]

I'm okay, is imparted through their psychic connection. He can feel her doubt. I'm safe with him.[break][break]

The answer to the question is amended with a more succinct, "She wouldn't, if she could stop it."

the restraints are taken away and placed on the workstation to the side along with the other equipment, seeing as their experiment has now come to an end. and as cillian spills bile into the sink, theo can't help but let his mind wander.

he listens, nods, and offers thoughts of his own.

"avatarship worries me, cillian."

marcus kotov's words ring loudly, reminding him he cannot treat them all the same. with Cillian Quinn, he takes the softer approach.

"i know you feel lugia empowers you; i have seen how it does; but does it come at a cost?"

There's a tired exasperation there that suggests this isn't the first time someone's broached such a subject with Lugia's chosen. Why couldn't they just let him be? He was fine.[break][break]

But Beckett approaches the subject gently enough that all he earns is that tired protest, and not bared teeth.[break][break]

"Everything comes at a cost." It's blunt with honesty. "She's changed me, sure, but plenty of shit's done that. Kanto changed me." You changed me, too. He keeps that thought to himself. "If you're worried I'm dying or something, don't be. Temp's been insistent I check in regularly with Rocket's doctors, and I'm fine."[break][break]

His eyes narrow suspiciously as he turns away from the sink, still using the counter to support his weight. He's trembling slightly from exertion and pain. "Unless you're worried for some other reason...?"
