the hyderigon's ball was safely secured on his hand. he hums himself a tune as he goes to the next challenge, waiting until he reaches the topmost level that the platform could reach. stepping out of the elevator doors, kyle would happen upon a room that brought him confusion at first glance.

kyle's personal choice of pokemon never had a problem with the scenario given to them by the floor. an acute sense of hearing and smell makes them less reliant on their other senses, enabling them to locate a target within a vicinity with ease. the other challenges would seem more of a challenge on paper compared to the dilemma given to him for this floor.

while he could have used other pokemon on his disposal, he brings out his arcanine, mostly for the sake of setting up a show for the audience. he could barely take a glimpse of their adversary, but he knows his pokemon would still be able to match.

"flamethrower."

embers fill the room, bringing out the accents of the area and revealing two creatures that aim to stop the challenger from reaching his goal. everything was exposed in a moment as the sea of flames leave nothing to be hidden. what remains were the arcanine and the unlikely pair of the meowth and his guardian mightyena.

kyle decides to go for the straightforward approach, forgoing any tricks and opts for the quickest way possible to end this endeavor. the meowth and the mightyena react defensively against the arcanine's move, but for a good reason.

"outrage."

the arcanine turns berserk. an aura envelops it as it snarls and growls against both of the pokemon. in a fit of violence, he lunges towards the smaller pokemon. the mightyena tries to block it, but it easily swatted to the side by the larger, bulkier, and more toned canine. the meowth tries to outmaneuver, but extreme speed lets the arcanine stay in control.

as soon as kyle deems his pokemon get too aggressive, he sounds a whistle, immediately bringing an abrupt stop to the rampage. the arcanine goes to his pokemon and kyle leaves the room in cinders and flames among other signs of destruction. he makes a mental note to apologize to balder after his challenge as he moves on to the next part.

Kyle hadn't held back in the final challenge. The carnage left by the Arcanine was clearly visible as the darkness faded away due to the lamps lighting up. Both the Alolan Meowth and the Mightyena laid on the ground, unmoving and defeated. As proof of his victory, the giant doors slowly opened themselves, letting the light from the room shine into the hall where Kyl and co. fought.[break][break]

A huge white/beige room, with no visible special features. It seemed like oval-shaped and there were no visible walls... Almost like it was extending forever. In what seemed to be the middle of the room was a throne of white stone. Sitting upon it was the Shaman King: Balder Schwartz. As the challenger entered the room, the man stood up, a smile upon his face.[break][break]

"Welcome to the Spirit Realm, challenger. Where you will be faced with your final trial: a battle against me. Since I know you like tag team battle, I decided to grant your wish: our fight will be limitted to 4 pokemons each and we can have 2 of them on the field at once. Be sure to expect some surprises during our fights though. Now... Keigo, Jaws, step forward."[break][break]

From behind the throne, a Blaziken and a Feraligatr emerged, walking slowly to stand besides the Gym Leader, their arms crossed upon their chest. Balder removed the cloth covering him, revealing his bare chest with multiple markings upon it. "You get to make the first move Kyle. Choose wisely however, for I'm not going to hold back."[break][break]

"the spirit realm."

the mention of the phrase left a smile on his expression, chuckling momentarily to himself. balder earns himself an applause from kyle when he removes his costume. he takes two pokeballs from his holster as the laughter subsides, releasing two of his mightyena against the ones balder has.

foxtrot snarls, baring his teeth with fur standing on their ends, intimidating the opposition from acting properly. the low rumble in his throat warns the other party to take caution instead of going all out: a psychological thing his pokemon seemed to utilize more often than not.

bravo remains, equally as ready but not as aggressive as the excited foxtrot. "let's start with toxic." his hands point towards the feraligatr. the dark-type appeared to have a reflux, regurgitating poison from his bile before spitting it at the water-type at fast speeds.

The smile on Kyle's face, as well as the applause, was enough for Balder to consider the first challenge a success. He wanted to leave a small impact on the challenger and for the viewers, and his goal had now been attained. But the show wasn't over yet. There was still some secrets to be revealed during this final encounter.[break][break]

So the two Mightyenas right away huh... Balder remembered facing one of them during his time as a gym trainer. Most likely Kyle's favorite pokemon, since he has two of them. And both of them were dark type, so that meant specific strategies here. As the one named Foxtrot showed its teeth, the giant alligator and the fighting rooster took a step, visibly intimidated. Balder stepped back a bit to give room for the battle.[break][break]

While the other wolf seemed to be calmer by nature, soon came the first attack: Toxic. Jaws placed his arms before him, as if to block the attack, yet it was useless. The gunk struck him, laying it's nightmarish status upon the water pokemon. The countdown for the Feraligatr had now begun. Clock is ticking, time to get moving.[break][break]

"Time to show you why this is the Spirit Realm. Spirit of Fire, radiate your energy!" As he said those words, Balder pressed a button on a controller hidden behind his back. Reacting to the button press, the ceiling began to open, allowing a bright and blazing sun to shine in. The power of a Sunny day. Feeling the radiance of the sun upon its back, Keigo roared and charged towards Foxtrot. Surprised, Jaws began to follow, but moving towards the wolf that had poisoned him: Bravo.[break][break]

"Keigo, show them your might with your rapid kicks! Jaws, show that Mightyena that your strenght is a superpower." Getting close to Foxtrot, Keigo the Blaziken began to chain combo kicks towards it, delivering two quick kicks at the legs of the wolf to try and hinder it. As for Jaws, his right fist surrounded itself with a golden light before he tried to strike Bravo on the right side of it's jaw.[break][break]

he should have expected fighting-type moves, but the necessity to give his mightyena some screen time might just be his own undoing for this challenge. maybe he needs to come to terms that he's a masochist in some ways.

"bravo, protect! foxtrot, poison fang!"

a protective bubble surrounds the mightyena as the feraligatr comes crashing towards him with his fist. the protect holds the attack, although the shock wave from the collision could be felt throughout the field. as soon as the protect shatters, bravo backs off from its attacker towards foxtrot.

the first kick causes the mightyena to stagger on its footing. the second one effectively gets it fall forward. it latches onto the foot of its attacker though, coating his fangs with poison and letting it sink into its skin.

While one of the wolf went more on the defensive against the walking Alligator, using "Protect" to deflect the glowing fist, the other one dropped its calm demeanor to retaliate. Sinking poison fangs into the leg of the Blaziken, the rooster winced and was visibly angry from betting bitten like this. The poison flowing from the fangs entered the wound on the fighting chicken, poisoning it as well.[break][break]

Deciding to not let this opportunity go to waste, Blaziken acted without waiting for his tamer's order. Flames erupted from his leg, exactly where Foxtrot had sunken its fangs. The flames shone brightly as Blaziken decided to flip in the air and try to slam his leg and the wolf upon the ground. If Foxtrot was too stubborn, he would most likely taste the full might of Blaze Kick.[break][break]

"Let's raise the stakes a bit. Spirit of my ancestors, grant your boon to your warriors." As he said those words, two totems emerged from the ground, near the throne, reprenseting the 2 animals on the field: Alligator and Rooster. The totems began to emit a special wave, allowing the two pokemons to gain an increased attack power and to be faster on their feeth.[break][break]

"Don't just stand there Jaws! Show how chilling your fans can be!" With the increased speed and attack, Feraligatr lunged forward, going after Bravo. Ice surrounded its fangs and a chilling mist escaped from its mouth. The water pokemon kept jumping forward, trying to get a bite of the other Mightyena.

the mightyena is persistent with its attack. it sinks more poison with poison fang to the blaziken's leg despite the threat. without any verbal commands to take cue off, kyle doesn't get enough time to call for a different move.

even if he did, however, kyle couldn't think of any other play besides to try and cripple the blaziken for the rest of the match with either the leg injury or the poison.

the mightyena falls with the attack. kyle recalls foxtrot and releases his leafeon to take its place.

"sand attack, bravo!"

the dark-type backs away from the attack, leading the feraligatr to hit his shoulder instead of any other part of his body. he winces in pain, though it does not stop him from attempting to blind the water-type and trying to wriggle free from the grip.

The fangs of ice struck their targets, leaving their marks on the shoulder of the Mightyena. Sadly, however, as the Mightyena retaliated, the Feraligatr collapsed. The poison had eroded all of its vitality, making him fall unconcious. Balder recalled the defeated pokemon into it's pokeball and stored it upon its belt. One pokemon down on both end, yet his Blaziken was more damaged then Bravo. Scales were slowly tipping in Kyle's favor.[break][break]

"Guess I should expect as much from an Elite Four member huh? You're doing great so far, but let's see how you can handle this one. Rise up, Bear Totem!" The totem of the Alligator retracted into the ground. Soon after, the one featuring an angry bear emerged from the ground. From behind the throne, a big Ursaring emerged, standing beside Balder.[break][break]

"Keigo, let's show Kyle's new friend how it's done around here. Raise the heat with Flame Charge!" The Blaziken crossed his arms before him as fire began to cover his body. Using his still intact leg, he plunged forward, trying to use Flame Charge on the Leafeon that had just entered the field. Still, to keep advancing, he had to use his wounded leg, making his aim off a bit. Hopefully, the attack would still strike home.

kyle is aware of the abilities that most common starter pokemon, such as the blaziken line, have. he doesn't risk going against a wounded blaziken, and instead plays if safe.

"bravo, protect. leafeon, behind bravo and nature power."

the release from the feraligatr's attack somewhat eases his pain, though kyle could still see his pokemon struggling with the damage it sustained. it manages to keep a protect up while the leafeon runs behind the barrier, making it with the aid of chlorophyll.

from behind the protection, the leafon shoots a tri-attack, which nature power has transformed into. three elemental bolts are fired off to the blaziken, fire, ice and lightning being shot at succession.

kyle moves on to the next part of the fight, eyeing the ursaring while he attempts to make an assumption to its next move.

The Flame Charge struck the barrier, colliding with enough force to shake the air around the battlefield. Balder whistled at the intensity of the strike, surprised that his Blaziken was able to deliver such a powerful strike. Sadly, the protection offered by Bravo was able to fend off the damage from the attack, allowing for the Tri-Attack to hit the pokemon directly.[break][break]

As the 3 elemental beams struck their targets, the Blaziken stood his ground, trying to tank the attack as much as possible. However, the beams kept on pushing him away from the opponent, stopping any possible counterattack. A cloud of smoke rose up as the attack finished. Once the smoke vanished, Blaziken was still standing, in a battle stance, almost like it was ready to continue.[break][break]

"Passed out on her feet huh..." Balder took a pokeball from his belt and recalled the fainted bird fighter into it. "That was a nice combination of a Spear and Shield type of strategy. You seized an opportunity and were able to turn it into your advantage." A smile showed up on the gym leader's face. This was becoming exciting, getting pushed into a pinch like that.[break][break]

"But you're not the only one ready to use a shield! Show yourself, Turtle Totem!" As the totem for the Rooster retracted into the ground, another one emerged instead, picturing a turtle. The stone throne that Balder sat on previously started to slide away from the battlefield, revealing an opening in the ground from which an over-sized Turtonator emerged. The turtle moved forward, standing beside the Ursaring.[break][break]

"It's the last hurdle for you, Challenger! Will you be able to break through it, or will you know defeat? Ancestors, grant us your succor! Teddy, avenge the fallen with your powered fist!" The colors on the totem of the Turtle and the Bear flickered before becoming a deep blue light. Suddenly, their attack and speed returned to normal, but instead, all their defenses rose up. Upon the order of his trainer, the Ursaring roared and rushed forward, swinging his arm at Bravo with the move Hammer Arm

the compliment causes him to tug the neckline of his shirt to cover his quivering smile, facing away from the camera as he does. he recovers from it shortly after as he turns back to facing balder.

"thanks. that's how i trained them to be."

he faces the pokemon replacing the previous pair, assessing the turtonator to be more of a problem than the ursaring. he keeps his options open as he decides to go defensive for the first few exchanges.

"leafeon, take that attack and synthesis. bravo, step back. toxic on the turtonator."

the grass-type charges forward with chlorophyll, running and then lunging for the arm preemptively before it can hit the mightyena. it buys enough time for the dark-type to move out of the way while he recovers his health under the sun with synthesis.

the mightyena moves away from the clash between the ursaring and the leafeon as it finds a good angle for its attack. once it takes a good spot, it shot his toxic to the defensive pokemon.

It seemed like Kyle had been pleased by the compliment about his tactics. That's a good thing. Balder smiled before observing the battle go on. While the initial target for the Hammer Arm was out of reach now, the attack still struck one of the two creatures, dealing some damage. Yet the Leafeon seemed to recover the damage fast enough thanks to the synthesis.[break][break]

As the Leafeon served as a shield, Kyle decided to proceed with Toxic once more, to try and cripple the Turtonator. If that were to strike, things would go south even more... "Teddy, block the attack!" Hearing the orders from his master, the big bear jumped towards the side, blocking the mass of poison from reaching the turtle. In this case, however, it meant that Teddy was now heavily poisoned. A bad thing, right?[break][break]

Suddenly, the sky dome began to close, cutting the light of the sun from reaching inside the dome. The lights in the dome lit up to compensate the lack of solar light, allowing for the battle to continue. The ursaring stood back up from taking the poison hit, patting his belly to remove some dust and sludge remains.[break][break]

"Guess it's about time to show that we can do coordination too. Teddy, time to trash about! Shell, light this place up!" Powered by the strength of his Guts, the bear lunged forward, flailing his arms around as he tried to strike the Mightyena before him. As for the turtle dragon, he took aim at the Leafeon and unleashed the move Flamethrower, in order to try and defeat him before he becomes more of a problem.

"oh. i should've thought of that."

kyle gets faced with the same strat that he frequently uses. his knowledge of ursaring's ability only comes to mind when it activates. all of a sudden, the favor is turned against him. the smile on his expression only gets wider when he finds himself backed to a corner by the gym leader.

two claps were sent, mostly to get the attention of his pokemon. "bravo, protect. leafeon, same protocol." the command was almost selfish and cruel, but kyle considers his choices and is left with little to no choice.

chlorophyll is the crux of the leafeon's role in the battle. he goes to the mightyena's side quickly, leading the flamethrower to the dark-type. a barrier appears, shielding the two from the intense sun-boosted flames. it couldn't withstand the heavy blows from the ursaring, however, cracking and breaking under extreme duress.

the leafeon escapes the flurry of attacks unscathed. bravo, the main target, unfortunately doesn't. a swing of the ursaring's arm throws it upwards, with a laser from kyle's pokeball recalling it before it lands on the ground.

the challenger doesn't waste any time to replace the combatant on his side of the field.

"wil."

the larger canine appears, his large stature standing above the smaller leafeon, caging it underneath him like a defensive fortress. it stares down its enemies, letting out a threatening bark to intimidate the opposition.

"am i in the advantage, or is it the other way around?" he asks balder. he chuckles at his own question. "i can't even tell at this point!"

his pokemon were healthier. balder's ursaring, however, was already primed for an onslaught.

The shield shattered, the wolf was sent flying and immediately recalled to the pokeball. Both sides were now down to 2 pokemons, yet Kyle still held the advantage. Both of his remaining pokemons were still at full capacity, although the Leafeon might be running short on stamina with moving around so much.[break][break]

As the big fire dog, Arcanine, emerged, the Leafeon proceeded to hide underneath while Wil emitted an intimidating roar. Even though Teddy was still lost in his trashing mindset, his body froze for a second from hearing the roar, showing that the move functioned. Shell didn't seem to be showing any difference, yet it most likely had struck a chord in his being. And then, Kyle proceeded to ask who had the advantage at this point while chuckling.[break][break]

A smile drew itself on Balder's face. "I'd say you still have the advantage... But not for long! IT'S TIME TO TURN THE TABLES, TEDDY! SHOW THAT NEW DOG WHO'S THE BOSS HERE!" The bear roared as he was already charging the Arcanine, flailing his arms as he started trashing around once more, seemingly more aggressive this time. Possibly a sign that he's running out of juice?[break][break]

"Shell, give him some support! Show them that they should fear you too!" The turtle dragon took a deep breath, building up some energy inside his lungs, before releasing a purple smoke cloud towards the battling trio, hoping to at least damage the Arcanine and Leafeon, and possibly poison them too![break]

he shapes his finger to a gun and shoots his leafeon with a command. "sunny day." he turns his hand to his arcanine afterwards. "morning sun."

the leafeon wheezes from underneath the arcanine as smog reaches them. his legs shake before it forces itself to get back on its legs. it manages to get the sun back out in the field despite it, however.

the leafeon wasn't the only one disoriented by the smog. the arcanine remains stalwart on his position. it receives the pummeling from the ursaring, intently concentrating on absorbing sunlight to recover from the beat down.

fortunately for kyle, the weather brought more advantages to him.

defensive play wasn't probably his best choice, but it lets kyle play the game with less risks. kyle just has to wait for the toxic to reach its full potency, but then again, he has more options to play with at the entry of a new soldier on his field.
