Yumi had heard of the strange outbreaks of aggressive Pokémon throughout the region, but she never expected to be caught in the middle of one while traveling through Jagged Pass. A pair of Sneasler accosted her on the trail, claws and fangs bared. [break][break]

"What a nuisance," she grumbled, her MANICURED hands plucking two Pokéballs from her belt and tossing them forward. [break][break]

Her Starmie and Gothitelle emerged in flashes of light. "Take care of these," she ordered. [break][break]

Blasts of PSYCHIC from both Pokémon quickly subdued the Sneasler. Yumi tossed a third Pokéball, an empty one, in an attempt at capturing one. [break][break]

Yumi had heard of those same robotic Pokémon from her friends Mei Liu and Alexandra Briarwood, both of whom had been assigned to help with the excursions into the Giant Chasm and Area Zero. A part of her wished for one for herself, but she was too busy with her everyday work to venture into that danger zone. [break][break]

"Maybe," she said to Rhys, "but I'm not an expert on other dimensions or even Pokémon in general." [break][break]

They wandered through the building, which looked to be some kind of factory. Many rooms had conveyor belts and other machinery designed to assemble objects, though they were nonfunctional. Upon closer inspection, the objects seemed remarkably similar to the mechanized Pokémon she'd encountered there before. [break][break]

"With the number of Ultra Beasts prowling around these places, you're absolutely right about weapons," Yumi said as they passed through yet another chamber. [break][break]

"Everyone I know is accumulating these powerful Pokémon. Even my bodyguard, who didn't used to like Pokémon back when we lived in Johto." [break][break]

Much to her surprise, the room had an assembly lines that still worked. She paused near the doorway, watching with interest to see what the machine was in the process of making. After a moment, she recognized them. [break][break]

Tsareena. Mechanical Tsareena with blades for legs. A half-dozen were already complete, and they turned their heads to stare at Yumi and Rhys. The small hairs on the back of the woman's neck stood on end as alarm bells rang in her head. [break][break]

"Run," she commanded Rhys, just as the squad of Tsareena lurched into swift motion in their direction. [break][break]

It guards several SOUL-HEARTS that it is attempting to repair. It will manage to repair one Soul-Hearts by chance as it transfers some of its INFINITY ENERGY to it, shortening the Volcanion's life. The Volcanion is doing this in an attempt to find the MAGEARNA it had sworn to protect a long time ago, believing itself to be the last surviving "knight" of the royal guard.[break][break]

Bringing one SOULLESS MAGEARNA to the Volcanion will allow Yumi Hasegawa to open a hatch on the Magearna's chest to install the Soul-Heart in order to grant it "life", which then can be captured.[break][break]

Instead of a MAGEARNA, you may encounter and catch a STAKATAKA that has managed to displace itself here. Whether it is here from Hoenn or another location in ULTRA SPACE is unknown.

Once more, Yumi used the primal crystal in Team Rocket's possession to traverse into the Mechanical Kingdom. Her companion for the expedition, however, was a man she did not know. He had introduced himself as Rhys Collins, a pharmacist. [break][break]

"It's like one of our regions, but the technology uses strange mechanisms," she explained to him as they passed through the rift, finding themselves in an unfamiliar building. The intricate, clockwork design of the interior immediately emphasized her point. [break][break]

"The Pokémon are similar, and they don't seem to have any souls. But they're still highly dangerous," she continued, opening one of her Pokéballs to release her Shadow Tsareena. Kaoru had traveled through the realm before and was familiar with its creatures. [break][break]

Yumi then took out her phone and started taking photos of their surroundings. "So, what's your interest in this place, Rhys?"

Yumi's eyes grew wide as the machinery of the door whirls and unfolds, revealing the study beyond. She knew better than to rush inside for further investigation, however, and gestured for her Shadow Tsareena to go first. [break][break]

After searching the chamber and finding the portal, Yumi turned to Nikkari. "How many of these rifts into this Mechanical Kingdom do you think there are?" [break][break]

She contemplated the glowing entryway and the familiar sight of Hoenn just beyond it. [break][break]

"I guess we'll have to come back to find out," she decided, without waiting for her companion to answer. With a confident stride, she stepped through the portal and found herself back on home soil.

Yumi glanced down at the closest pile of remains. "I saw something similar the last time I was here," she said, recalling how she and DESIREE BLOOMS teamed up their Phione against one such mechanized creature. [break][break]

The woman lifted her gaze to their surroundings. Though the building was primarily stone, intricate clockwork formed complex decorations on the furniture, windowsills, crown molding… even the staircase banister. But more than that… [break][break]

"They're everywhere, Nikkari. The mechanical designs," Yumi realized as she continued to look around with a more discerning gaze. "Could it be the technology of this world?" [break][break]

The other doors in that chamber had strange contraptions set into them instead of ordinary locks. Curious, she approached one. An empty, cog-shaped space occupied the center of the door's mechanism. [break][break]

Below it, fragments of metal lay scattered across the floor tiles.

Yumi shrugged, not caring if MARILYN HASEGAWA took an interest in Sen or not. "I have a feeling that if you tried to avoid her, she'd come looking for you." [break][break]

Despite their grandmother's genial demeanor during their recent first meeting, Yumi had a hunch that Marilyn knew exactly how to get what she wanted from people. Women with their lifestyle did not live long without a certain measure of cunning. [break][break]

"In any case, why bother resisting? It's just a meeting." Yumi took a sip of her water. "It's not like Grandmother is going to ask you for a test of loyalty." [break][break]

She was less certain of that, though. Hasegawas placed huge importance on loyalty, until they didn't.

Yumi's eyes lit up with delight at Nikkari's invitation. She slipped her hand into his and allowed him to lead her down the rest of the stairs. "Certainly," she replied, her lips curled into a mischievous smile. [break][break]

Once they reached a larger hall, she drew close to him and rested her other hand on his shoulder. As they twirled across the floor, she matched his steps and movements. Though she was unfamiliar with the dance, his expertise and her natural confidence lent her grace. [break][break]

A pair of double doors at the other end of the chamber burst open. Several mechanical Pokémon stomped through, a kind that Yumi had only seen once before. However, almost as soon as they set foot in the building, their movements slowed. [break][break]

Kaori leapt. A LOW SWEEP buckled the legs of one of the strange Pokémon. It tried to fight back, but its sluggishness was its downfall. The Tsareena's following attacks crushed its shell and laid it low. [break][break]

21 experience the kingdom's song lowering tempo, causing all mechanizations, including soulless pokemon, to slow dramatically.

When Nikkari walked toward the nearest window, Yumi followed. Instead of surprise at the sight beyond the glass panes, she felt relieved; so they had made it to the kingdom of clockwork and machinery, after all. [break][break]

"Why not?" she said, too preoccupied with the strange melody to notice the same movements outside that he had. An adventurous smirk curled her lips. "It's a beautiful song. I want to see who's playing it." [break][break]

Leaving his side, she started toward a grand, curving staircase carved of marble. Her Tsareena followed at a slower pace, more cautious than curious. [break][break]

"Nikkari, look! There are more portraits up here," Yumi shouted as she reached the landing, peering at the walls. "Different ones, too."

Yumi stepped over the shredded metal parts to stand next to Nikkari. She peered up at the oil painting with a raised eyebrow, taking in each beautifully rendered detail. [break][break]

"I didn't think humans lived in these places," she admitted, mesmerized. Her gaze lingered on the doll-like Pokémon in the girl's lap. "Could she be a Megalopolan? I've read the reports about them." [break][break]

But those reports described behavior that did not match the regal calm enshrouding the portrait's subject. [break][break]

Kaori made an inquisitive noise, drawing Yumi's attention from the painting. "What is it?" the woman asked. But the Tsareena did not respond. She stood stock-still, head cocked as if listening. [break][break]

Then Yumi heard it: a faint sound, audible only in the heavy silence that choked the building. Musical notes. A song. She looked at her companion, wonder and curiosity stealing into her expression. "Do you hear that, Nikkari?"

Yumi rolled her eyes. "Being charged with first degree murder was the reason Grandfather divorced her, remember? She's not in his will and has to build everything back up from nothing. She's paid plenty for her mistake." [break][break]

But Marilyn did not have nothing, not with Team Rocket supporting her. [break][break]

"Anyway, yes, I've met her. She's here in Hoenn, Sen. And she wants to meet you." Yumi gave him a pointed look, one that conveyed her expectation of his agreement. [break][break]

They reached the pho restaurant. Yumi led the way inside and sat down at a table in the back corner. The menu was a single page of laminated paper, the edges worn with plenty of use. She scanned the scant offerings and ordered a bowl of beef pho when the waiter came by with two glasses of water.

The idea of public indecency utterly repulsed Yumi, and her crinkled nose turned into a scowl. "You're full of shit." [break][break]

She thanked the lawyer and promised to talk with him over the phone to settle payment for his services. Then she grabbed Sen by arm and walked him out of the police station. "We can get food," she relented. [break][break]

Part of her wanted him to continue suffering with his hangover, but another part of her saw this as the perfect opportunity to raise a certain topic. She checked her phone for the nearest place to have a quick meal. [break][break]

"There's a pho restaurant down the street. Let's go." [break][break]

Yumi had half a mind to walk in silence, but she couldn't keep silent on the topic anymore. Glancing at her cousin from the corner of her eye, she said, "I don't know if you've heard, but Grandmother was released from prison, too, not long ago." [break][break]

There was no doubt of which grandmother she meant. Of the three women Yumi and Sen could call by that title, only one had been arrested and sentenced to decades of incarceration. [break][break]

As Yumi walked into the police station, heels clicking, she repeated Sen's words in her head. A miscommunication. A little fight. Gods, had he picked a fight with someone on the street? [break][break]

Glancing around the precinct, she spotted a cop entering data into a computer and strode up to him. "Hello, excuse me. I'm here to pick up my brother, Sen Hasegawa," she said, keeping her tone pleasant despite the disgust rising in her throat. [break][break]

The cop directed her to a colleague, the actual officer who'd arrested her cousin. Unfortunately, the resulting exchange was lengthier than she'd hoped for. The lawyer—someone deep in Team Rocket's pocket and familiar with these incidents—arrived after five minutes and took over the conversation. Yumi sat beside him, listening intently, taking mental notes. [break][break]

Eventually, the police released Sen from the cell and let him sit with Yumi while the lawyer finalized his processing. [break][break]

"They're letting you go," she explained. "The crimes you were arrested for are relatively minor so they're slapping you with a fine, which I've already paid." She wrinkled her nose at him. "Seriously, though? Public indecency?"

Yumi was grateful she was in the elevator when Sen finally confessed his location. "Prison?!" she shrieked. "What the fuck did you do?! Which prison?!" [break][break]

Logic told her that he was likely at a police station instead. Officers of the law couldn't just throw people into a detention center or correctional facility without a trial or hearing; that was illegal. But they could detain their arrests in holding cells until they finished processing. [break][break]

As soon as Sen gave her the name of the city, Yumi said, "I'm on my way. I'll call a criminal defense lawyer for you, too. Just stay put, and don't do anything stupid." [break][break]

She hung up, her heart hammering at a breakneck pace in her chest. Her brain was scrambling for the lessons her parents had taught her about legal procedures. Back in Johto, the Hasegawas had corrupt lawyers in their pockets who could handle any situation for them, but in Hoenn, she had no one. [break][break]

When the elevator stopped and the doors slid open, Yumi hurried through the casino lobby and down the front steps. At the street corner, she hailed a taxi. After sliding into the back seat and giving instructions to the Corviknight, she logged in to Team Rocket's database on her phone and looked through their network of resources. [break][break]

Fifteen minutes later, she stepped out of the taxi. Calm and collected, she strode up to the front doors of Slateport's lower district police station.
