The little pink dog ran right up on him, causing him to fall back with a shout. Vanyari banked down, but Porter held up a hand, as the Snubbull sniffled and snuffled, seeking out the packed lunch anchored at his hip.

“You want some?” he asked, sitting up and unclasping the box, offering the Snubbull an apple. It crunched the juicy fruit eagerly, slime and fruit flesh flying with gusto, and waving its stubby arms for more.

Porter sat up on his knees and laid the lunchbox on the ground, doling out portions to the Snubbull and Vanyari, who waddled in close, sitting in companionable silence… save for the loud chewing.

Porter kept the sea to his back as he hiked up the shallower slopes of Meteor Falls. It was a bright spring day and it felt good to be out in the world after the region’s recent cold snap.

Above, Vanyari trilled with quiet excitement, stretching her wings against the blue sky, the sun beaming down around her.

The drop off shelf past the shoreline was jagged and steep, falling in fathoms just a short distance beyond the sand. Porter chanced a glanced upward at where the sunlight diffused through the darkening water, and was not shocked to see it already very dim.

He turned back when Robin declared she saw something. His face fell at the sheer number of Skrelp between them and their target.

“We’ll just have to be gentle,” he said, releasing his Staryu. “Kihara, bubble beam.”

The star-shaped shell began to spin, and a series of bubbles emergen from between her spines. They lifted and rose, intermingling between the Skrelp and almost tenderly shifting them to the side as they began to disperse. It opened up a small pathway to where the corals were trapped.

“Do you think you can, um, squeeze in there while I run interference?” he asked, slightly sheepish, but also a foot taller than her.

“Sasky,” he says, committing the name to memory in the echo of his bootsteps down the porch stairs.

He’s about to say ‘hi’ to Oleg when the little alien goes into some bizarre breakdancing routine; he catches the flash of something dark and then follows Sasky’s gloved hands to where little paw-prints have been drawn on the living stone.

A high-pitched giggle snort escapes him before he can clap his hand over his mouth and stop it. It’s definitely embarrassing and his face flushes red all the way, he knows, to the tips of his ears, so he drops to his knees in the dirt to start clearing out space at the base of the berry plants in the hopes of hiding it.

“Um, I’ve only just arrived, so right now Slateport until I get my proper assignment,” he said, furiously trying not to look at her. “H-have you been in Hoenn long?”

Porter does his best not to quail in the face of Freya’s frank approach to dealing with his inexperience. He does step back as she begins to move, watching closely, but feeling like he can breathe again, if only slightly, one she’d left his personal space.

T’neri turns, tail lashing, head lowered. Porter thinks, at first, Freya’s going to wrestle her bare-handed-- bring out some Kung Fu Panda like skadoosh that would turn the dragon to mewling pulp in her fingers-- but then she asks if he has another Pokemon and he startles and begins slapping at his pockets even though he knows where his Pokeballs are.

“Oh, yes. Um. Hold on.” He finally finds Ermenesande’s ball and releases the Empoleon, who, after a brief scan of the situation, locks her gaze in on T’neri, because she’s had to step in when the dragon’s become to rough-- or been too distant-- before.

“Are you going to want them to battle?” he asks, feeling a little stupid-- you’re not stupid, you’re just out of your depth-- as he does so.

Ermenesande’s head tilts at a sharp angle, low, warbling trill suggesting she might like that idea, a lot.

Porter hadn’t set out in the world to become a water trainer. It had sort of happened organically, Ermenesande being his starter, and Iratiri being just a baby he’d brought with him when he left Paldea.

There weren’t a lot of specialists in Hoenn’s Ranger ranks; plenty of people had Water-types, of course, but it still seemed like his name got volunteered for a lot of water-based things.

“Right. We have to go as quick as possible.” He affixed his own divemask while Ermenesande checked his O2 tank, then followed robin coello off the dock, falling backwards into the water, his Empoleon sliding in after them.

“Do we know how deep they are? Or what they’re trapped in?” he asked as they descended, voice rough and staticky, muffled through the rebreather.

The young woman has a thick head of mousey-brown hair and big, green eyes; the whole of her exudes a kind of energy that Porter got the feeling she might always have. A soft, pink glow holds her cup steady in one hand; Porter clocks it and grins, while nodding along as their client, Grace, explains the gig.

“Sounds good,” he says, setting the box of donuts down within arm’s reach of the older woman, and then turning to look at the expanse of gray-brown berry plants still growing, and the rows upon rows of fields covered with detritus, clumps of rotting leaves, and sticks. “Many hands make light work, and all that.”

Iratiri makes a warbling noise of agreement despite the fact that she absolutely would not be helping, very much. She was just a baby, after all.

Porter dons a pair of offered gardening gloves to protect from old thorns and sharp wood, pausing to flex his fingers, and extend his hand.

“Um, my name’s Porter. I’m assuming you’re Saskia?” He smiles, to soften how potentially creepy the blow might be. “Your name was in the dossier,” he added, almost apologetic.

Freya had known what she was about do a degree that even Porter found astonishing. Not that he’d doubted it, of course, but he hadn’t expected her to take a single look at the situation and go about arranging and ordering things. It filled him with hope.

Porter liked to think he was pretty okay at a number of things: he’d been a barista for a while, so he could make a mean latte; he’d had a green thumb since birth; and he was very good at swimming.

But if he was filling out, say, a resume, and there was a slot for dragon training: years of experience, he’d have to put a big, fat zero.

Ermenesande was willful, but he’d had her since she was an egg, and ‘tiri was still a baby.

T’neri was a full grown adult, with the scars to prove it, like rings in a cut-down tree. She was stubborn and, at times, vicious, and Porter was nursing a series of burns and bite marks, some from T’neri herself, and some from wild Pokemon she had decided not to intervene with on Porter’s behalf.

Luckily, the League had the perfect resource for learning how to deal with dragons.

“Once she was healed up, I tried to let her go,” Porter explains to freya morningstar , after a brief summary of his and T’neri’s relationship thus far. “I’d hate for her to feel… domesticated. But she wouldn’t leave.”

Porter doesn’t realize he’s being watched until both Ermie and ‘tiri stop and look over his shoulder. Belatedly, he clocks it, then turns.

How long has the Salamence been there? He’s not sure. He freezes, eyes locked with the dragon; it’s dripping in seawater and pulling one wing uselessly behind it. There are huge gashes in its turquoise scales and huge drops of blood fall from its maw.

Ermenesande rises from the sea; the Salamence growls a warning, then hisses and jerks in pain.

“Hey, it’s-- it’s okay,” Porter holds one hand out to his penguin and one to the Salamence, “we're not going to hurt you.”

Something in the dragon’s expression shifts, and Porter begins to approach, slowly, very slowly. He reaches in his pocket for a Pokeball as he gently places his palm on an unwounded portion of the dragon’s face.

“Let me help get you patched up, okay?” he says, as he taps the Pokeball gently on the beast’s head.

They’d found a little sniff of land, likely the result of erosion and low tide. Porter stood with his boots in the gravelly sand, hands in his pockets. In the vast, salty sea beyond, Iratiri zipped to and fro, stretching her little Horsea tail, while Ermenesande stoically basked in the lapping waves, enjoying the cool temperature and crisp, sea air.

The Noivern’s trappings jingled as the bat-dragon zipped back into its Pokeball-- a nicely thematic matching Dusk Ball, Porter noted. He wondered if everything this lady possessed was thematically aesthetic.

“Why’d he step down?” Porter asks, genuinely curious despite also focusing on his work. A tall, thorny tree with sparse foliage sported a thatched nest in the higher branches. A yellow-and-red plumed head poked out over the edge of the nest, a bit of it crumbling away to disrepair. An old nest, then, and this Pidgeot was probably a young female, moving in for the winter season.

“Did you have to go to princess school?”

The Pidgeot flutters down, curious. Porter extends a hand. The bird regards him skeptically until he flips his palm, revealing the millet snack across it. She takes it in her beak and cracks the grains with gusto, and is still munching when he taps her plumed head gently with a Pokeball.
