Her heart drops to her feet as he basically lays out their fate. She fights the urge to sigh, as it would do them no good. She shoots daggers at Gardevoir who chooses to keep throwing assaults at the thunder god. She spares him a look just as the thunder rumbles ominously close. "Bracing," she echoes with sardonic amusement as the lightning strikes and blows their ship to bits.[break][break]

The water is shockingly cold, and she brings herself back to the surface with hesitance. A gigantic wave is coming fast. She spits a bit of seawater out and shares some choice words with Gardevoir through their telepathic connection. [break][break]

She thinks she and Cillian won't talk about this when they wake from the simulation.

He's hard to look at. [break][break]

She wonders if he regrets it. It wouldn't have been worth asking in his mind, and it wasn't worth asking now, but she questions it at the same. She can imagine a dozen people crowding him in the next week, trying to get information or see if he'll vacate his position. It doesn't make sense to stand there and stare at him, but she doesn't think he's capable of saying much. [break][break]

She wants to offer a platitude despite herself, but everything that comes to mind fades to ash on her tongue. There's nothing to say to someone who knows what she is and what she does. Did. Will do. It's useless to try and pull a sheet over his eyes. He's not her enemy, she wouldn't strike him down here, but she imagines he's even less of an ally. He is, however, the most valuable test subject in all of Hoenn with his experiences, and she wants him to recover. [break][break]

"I will send the nurse in," she says instead of anything else. It's the only thing she can offer him, someone else who can administer pain management.

He leans in closer, and she fights every instinct to run. [break][break]

She holds her breath as he describes dreaming about his house, but it isn't until he mentions not remembering his daughter's face that she realizes this isn't some game. He doesn't know. [break][break]

Desperately, she wants to lie. She has to save her own skin, right? But lying to him means lying to every admin that comes her way, and she's not so sure Cillian Quinn or Elisabeth Fiorelli will even approach her kindly about disturbed dreams if they're suffering from similar symptoms. She realizes, now, that any of them could suspect Lulu Flint for meddling with their sleep, and Ameena can't cause her any pain. No one would ever be as brilliant nor as valuable to the field of study. [break][break]

She sighs. She presses a pager to summon her Porgyon from the basement. Before she can set the scene, she needs to buy a little time. She wants Porygon there to show before she tells. "You know Cresselia, yes?"

He had no answers for her. Worse, he spoke on dreams like a scholar, like his field of study involved the mind at all. She nearly hissed at him until she remembered her place beneath him. But it burned, the implication that her passion-wish-longing lacked the power to change the world, to change her dreams into doorways to the only thing she had sought in decades. Killing her would've been kinder, and yet, her sense of self-preservation kept her from yelling or even strangling him here. [break][break]

She had no idea what to make of him being in another paired dream. She had yet to find a subject to sit through multiple studies of a shared dreamscape. But there was no doubt she would never get him down for another sleep study.[break][break]

"Are you?" She returned the question combatively. He had been hiding in this dream to - what? Process the experience with 'the Sheriff', which could only mean the one and only Sheriff Davidson, and mope? Was he in his mind intentionally for her benefit? To teach her? What had he gained from sitting in here besides sharing the impossible with her. What was there to gain? Just the break from agony from his battered body, from what she could see, but she felt it was safe to say he held greater self-hatred than the average Rocket. So, could the answer be that simple? [break][break]

The world split around them, shattering into darkness.

Mosaics were pieces brought together to form a whole. Bits of things meaningless on their own, indeterminable alone, brought together for a greater purpose and greater life. They become something more than they could have ever been before. These memories were pieces that were just odd little stories on their own, fantasies. But what they came together to form should have been Howard... and yet, she had no idea what she was looking at. [break][break]

The Ting-Lu-bonded Howard, the campfire, the dragon, how could they... She was a hypocrite to suggest alternate realities were false instead of equally true to their current, as someone dedicated to accessing one with her mum alive. And yet, what she witnesses is so fantastical. Unmistakably, she feels it is wrong. For as much as he cherishes it, she feels disgusted by it. But this was not a fever dream. They are memories. [break][break]

"How?" It didn't make sense. And as she thought about how wrong those clips felt, it planted a small seed in her mind that perhaps she would always feel these alternate realities were wrong. Perhaps, she could not rest easy in any reality but her own. [break][break]

Or, perhaps, Howard was misrepresenting things. That was an easier problem to sit with. "How could any of that happen? How could you enter an alternate world and return?" He survived it. He was fucked beyond belief, and yet, he had returned in one piece. He should have been a huge answer to her life's work, but she felt herself moving backwards, instead. "What is happening to you?"

He taunts her. She can't help but wonder if she had been looking at him wrong this whole time. He was sick for playing with her this much, playing so innocent and worried about his state of being when all he really wanted to do was dissect her for the (unintended!) betrayal. [break][break]

But she has to play. She lets him speak. "What feels weird about these nightmares?" Gods, how much did he tell to Walsh? What if he had brought Lulu in on it? She knew terrible things happened to those who fucked with the organization and she was the prime target, and to have done it right in the middle of war preparation, to hinder Rocket's most powerful soldiers and leaders just before they struck...[break][break]

"Are you asking me to get into your head?" Had he figured out how to weaponize the dream realm? Did he know how to kill someone in the dreamscape? It would have been poetic to kill her where her interests and heart lied.

"...Not great," she answers reluctantly as he asks about how he looked. She doesn't know how better to articulate it. He shouldn't even be alive. She rose to follow him, unhappy to hear he had any familiarity with the dreamscape's function. Normally, two heads were better than one, and she liked to discuss dreams with people who understood, but she didn't see an ally in Howard right now.[break][break]

She saw a loose cannon. He was unpredictable to her. And in his dreamscape like this, he was so deeply engrained in it that she couldn't say what would happen. He had been grievously injured for a cause that had also separated him from a woman he cared deeply about. The complexity in those feelings and in the motivation behind the actions taken were not completely understood to her due to the data loss of the project, but she shouldn't have wanted it, anyways. She wanted answers to accessing the dream realm, not to invade someone's mind and rummage around, not to take away the only sanctuary everyone was entitled to. She shouldn't have... the dreams weren't supposed to cut so deep, anyways. That wasn't their design. And now, who could say how much that vulnerability had contributed to his recent tragedy.[break][break]

He was a man who had lost and lost and lost and, while that was something that connected them, she didn't see it as a bridge. Looking back, looking forward, it didn't matter. Howard was always looking, fucked up eye or not. She couldn't say what he saw when he looked at her. Was he Admin Fox? Was he a champion of the past? Was he a victim looking to spread his misery around?[break][break]

She took his hand.

It isn't healthy to want to be here. Even she knows that, and she spends her waking moments trying to figure out how to navigate the dreamscape intentionally. [break][break]

"Reality is waiting for you." He knows waking is inevitable, so maybe she shouldn't so hard on him. It isn't like he's totally lost. Yet, what he speaks... [break][break]

She steps closer to him. "Stop it. This - this is not what you dreamed about." Incriminating. Move past it, fast. "How could you have spent three months here?" He sounds obsessive.[break][break]

She feels her heart racing. She knows it can be a consequence to the dream study. She doesn't want him to have lost his mind. She did all she could to correct the experiment. Force stopping it would've meant death. She felt responsible for his state now, even a month after the study. Any mistakes he's made in the meantime were her burden. Her responsibility.[break][break]

"Wake up, Howard. You are hiding here."

Her eyes narrow on the dream comment. "I am very diligent." She doesn't offer anything further. She has been trying to use her data to come to a strong conclusion, but it is inevitable: she needs a greater pool of dreamers to craft better theories about how the dream realm can be navigated. How could you describe the dimensions of a room you hadn't yet reached a wall in? [break][break]

"Howard," she says softly, but not kindly. "That cannot be true. The dreaming mind is playful. You need your rest to heal, yes, but you will not derive any wisdom here." This was the avenue for processing emotion sometimes, but not thought. Rationality did not belong here. [break][break]

Should a dream be restful? Hers never were. She was always stuck in the confines of a scenario. Hers always took a memory and twisted it. Expanded upon it. She always dreamt while in a room in the dream realm, never in its hallways and its countless doors, never able to navigate it and choose an alternate reality for herself. Had he chosen this for himself? Or had he been put in an empty room and his tired mind wandered until it brought him here? [break][break]

She will not entertain it. "This is not Galar." This place is not her home. It is not his, either. She wants to know that he will be OK, but taking refuge in a dream and knowing it? Labelling it rational? It's dangerous. She wasn't sure how he had been sleeping lately or if he had seen June in his dreams since the study. It was incriminating to ask.

She might have underestimated his sadism. [break][break]

Or maybe that was an unfair assessment. There was something of his interest that was pure scientific joy, she knew it well. She held the Unown closer after his quick capture of it, and she did her best not to imagine what it felt like to undergo the process. "How... how will we know when it-?" [break][break]

The blue palette seems to flush darker as it nearly vibrates in her hands. [break][break]

Somehow, the process seems intimate. Forbidden. Like she's taken an apple from a garden under God's watchful eye. She looks at the Unown's own watchful eye and wonders what it sees right now. How fundamental is this change? Will Unown be recognizable by its own? Will they know it is touched, cursed, tainted?

It was solid and abstract in nearly equal swathes. That was generally promising, though she had expecting something closer to reality than what she saw. It suggested a bit of escapism... and with what she heard upon entering his dream, and what she saw upon arriving to his room, he had good reason to want to escape. [break][break]

She splayed her hands out as a show of good faith, not that she thought it would get her far. Howard had good reason to be defensive or fearful or paranoid. She knew only bits of what he had experienced. [break][break]

It would be stupid to ask how he is. Instead, she says, "what do you want?" His goals are the best kind of glimpse into the state of his mind. She doesn't feel any particular influence in his dream, suggesting its his. Suggesting maybe he's learned from his last dream intrusion. She can't say how much he knows of that, which makes her anxious, but she does her best to be level-headed. Her own emotions can exacerbate the unease of his dream. And she feels that this dream is unstable.

His casual outfit and demeanor are simultaneously a relief and a concern. She can't help but wonder if he would lull her into a false sense of security to subdue her more easily. She would be flattered if he went through the effort of strategizing such against the likes of her, but obviously, she didn't want any strategy at all. She wonders, looking at him splayed in the chair, if he liked to play with his food. [break][break]

Really, was he fucking with her? Was he more sadistic than she had initially pegged him for? It was hard to tell. She couldn't afford the outward panic. She had to be normal. Very normal. If he wanted to talk things out before deciding her fate, she had to play her part. [break][break]

"What concern brings you to my humble office?" She speaks as evenly as possible. He opted for no phone call, though he might just be a face-to-face type of communicator anyways. She isn't sure how long she should feign ignorance, how he wants this conversation to play out before he decides what grave to put her in. What kind of game is he playing? It could be worthwhile to start the groveling now.
