With his trainer’s help, the fox stood upright again. Pulsing fingers worked his magic on an idle Pokeball, teleporting it from the ground to his awaiting palm, which was in turn offered to Annie. Magician was a niche ability, but it had its uses. “Thanks, pal. Whenever you want to tag out, just say the word, alright?”

Thee wizard gave a gentle nod and stood stalwart, waiting for the next threat. His pain showed in a slight slouch and heavier breaths than before, but he was either too determined or too stubborn to make the call. Fortunately, the Pokemon passing through were both small and docile… for the moment.

A request for Trainer Tips made the girl’s eyes light up. It was one thing to fish for the questions, but somebody taking the bait was a nice stroke to her ego. What kind of experty would she be if she disappointed? “Well!” A teacher’s finger stuck itself into the air.

“The gym specialises in weather Pokemon, just like me! The challenger chooses what weather will be set for the fight, and that’s a massive advantage for them. There’s a lot of Pokemon that are stronger under a weather type, they’re mainly of a few types. For example, if you choose Hail, you can bet that at least one of his Pokemon will be ice-type, and they’re a pretty fragile bunch. Of course, that strategy has its own problems, but if you plan ahead they shouldn’t be too much of a problem.”

She finished with a cheery grin, gesturing to her Delphox. “The alternative, of course, is to remove the weather, but that’s a little harder to make stick unless you’ve got the right Pokemon.”

[attr="class","athread"]Any good Pokemon needed to have good judgement. Being able to make their own calls on when to fight, when to back down and when to call in their master. The theory was sound, but as was often the case with Annie, the way she put it into practice was a bit less understandable.

A portion of the Solar Squad (name pending) had been charged with leading their safari hunt. While Annie held the Pokeballs, and therefore the final decision, an almost full team of her Pokemon scoured the zone, entrusted with finding announcing the safari’s best. Firebolt and Firefly scoured the skies, Queenie and Kingpin kept close to each other and Cloud hovered above the tall grass. Their final companion waited in the Pokeball in Annie’s hand. Her ability would be needed when their first battle began, but until then…

One success out of hundreds, perhaps thousands of failures was a beacon of hope in an ever-extending tunnel of darkness... But it was enough. She’d clung to lesser hopes before – hell, she’d survived on them. That was exactly why she would be the next player to free the sword from the stone. At least, that was what she told herself as she made yet another attempt to wrest the Honedge from its hold.

[attr="class","athread"]It was a bit out of season to spy a Delibird strolling through Rustboro’s high street, and even stranger for it to be trying to offer a paper to everybody that passed him by. There were no presents to be found with Klaus on that day, unfortunately, and any attempts to ask would be met with a huff and frustrated paper-waving. The leaflets he gave out were handwritten and (shoddily) photocopied, inviting the recipient to a nearby arena to trial the Junior Gym.

The gym must have been early in development, seeing as it lacked any kind of decoration. Or a building, or a sign, or anything marking its presence. In fact, the outdoor arena had been established years before, and the only sight worth noting about it was the over-excited girl rushing around within it. Clad in what was quickly becoming a trademark tracksuit, Annie called to damn near everybody that approached, eagerly asking “Are you here to fight me?”, only for her face to fall once they declined, or worse, ignored her. A few seconds later, her eyes would light up at the sight of another potential victim, and the cycle began anew…

Much like Onus, Annie’s also haunted by ghosts of deeds she’d rather not have done. In Annie's case, she was poor and alone after fleeing Kanto, and often the only jobs that would take a child like her were of the illegal variety. I think there’s potential for these two to explore them together, whether it’s simply talking about it, or having one of their shared crimes catch up with them. Maybe they did a dirty deed together in Hoenn, or they’re tasked with solving a situation that hits a little too close to home. Let’s spitball some ideas!

I gathered from our mission thread that Annie and Kaida have something in common. Neither of them have much in the way of blood relatives, but they’ve made up for that with their Pokemon. Or mostly made up for it, in Annie’s case. She’s not quite sure if they’re really what she’s been looking for, and it’d do her good to try and voice her thoughts on the matter, especially with another trainer that has been in the same boat. [attr="class","athread"]It was no surprise that Goliath saw the worst of the attacks. Even when his battle partner could be seen, his kind’s reputation, his size and a dominating presence made him an obvious focus. Still, being peppered with attack minimizers was going to get troublesome fast- all the more reason for her to push the offensive.

Then there was the Hydro Pump, dousing the sands until they were too heavy to whip around the arena. It wouldn’t last, of course – not while the source of the storm stood and continued to channel it -, but the fliers had bought themselves a few precious moments without the weather… And more annoyingly, robbed Vamp of his hiding place. The disapproval showed on the challenger's face.

She had to think fast. Their eyes were ahead, and she much preferred to keep them there. And so it was with a deep breath that she commanded their first gamble. “Goliath, show them you’re not ahead! Ice Fang the Pidgeot!” A Tyranitar didn’t need to be told to charge without fear, of course. The beast let out another roar as he ran to the enemies’ side. His maw opened wide to reveal teeth extended by icicles, ready to wedge a chunk of the bird in-between them.

Whether or not they succeeded in doing so didn’t matter as much as what came once he was halfway across the field, for he was but a distraction. “Vamp, fry that Gyarados!” The Pidgeot had moved forward to perform its dance, leaving a clear path between the Gliscor and his soon-to-be victim. He sprung off the ground and fell into a brief glide, hoping to land atop the pseudo-dragon… and sink cackling canines into him. She’d been hoping to wait until the Sandstorm had whittled more of their health away, but with the threat of being danced into ineffectiveness, Thunder Fang made an early appearance.

So had being polite. So had being rude. So had using all the strength that she could muster, and at other a dozen attempts, blind luck didn’t seem to be on her side either. By that point, her main motivations were a glimpse of hope and a lot of sunken cost fallacy at work, driving her to approach the sword once more and give it another pull.

[attr="class","athread"]It wasn’t Annie that had led them to the gathering, but her own Metagross, all too eager to find its kin. A metal leg pointed the group out to the trainer, and once a few steps forward showed no provocation, she dared to approach. Titan’s arrival, it seemed, was welcomed with open arms (legs? girders?); within seconds, the Metagross were chattering away. Something told Annie that, even if they’d been speaking perfect Japanese, she would have been lost in a storm of words.

Eventually, her partner turned to her. Like a parent bringing their child to work, gestures and cheery calls introduced the girl to the others, and then directed her gaze downwards. A claw carved letters and numbers into the ground. Together, she recognized them as algebra – a form of math she hadn’t seen in years. Formulae rarely showed their use in a trainer’s life, but she’d spent enough time in school before it burned for her to know what to make of the equation:

9x-7i > 3(3x-7u)

It took a few minutes to get old gears working, but the Metagross clan were patient, and seemingly eager to see what she made of it. They knew that she had solved the puzzle when her face lit up, her cheeks reddened a shade, and after a few seconds, she rushed to hug her Titan. Such a display proved good enough for one of the wildlings to gesture to a Pokeball on her belt. A knowing nod from it left no doubt in Annie’s mind as to what it wanted.
