ARCHAEOLOGICAL AVALANCHE (GG)

THE BRIEFING

while the event organizers surveyed the surrounding landscape for the winter celebrations, a rich deposit of fossil filled earth was uncovered. the wintry terraforming has halted and the archaeological site has been fenced off.

however, that may not be enough to dissuade a famous band of thieves (the poachyenas) from seizing the assets for themselves. protect the fossils. the poachyenas may attempt to cause a miniature avalanches with the surrounding snow, stealthily attack, or ruthlessly attack on their own.

setting: fortree city, routes 119, 120, 124, lilycove city
requirements: 2-3 rocket/league, at least 5 posts each
rewards: up to 5 infamy, one base evolution fossil pokemon of choice (specify in mod req. after completion)

MADE BY VEL OF GS

The league had been alerted right away at the discovery of the fossils, naturally. Event planners had had to move whatever it is they were planning for that site to somewhere else; she’d skipped over that part of the report and kept going with the interesting bits about the fossils. Part of her wanted to become a professor, but she doubted she’d like being cooped up in a lab any more than she would like being cooped up on the farm under her grandmother’s too watching eyes. So this was as close as she got to that, making sure to pester whatever researchers she could find about information, claiming it was as much about the mission as it was her own curiosity.

She flipped open the file as she came to the meeting place, having thoroughly pestered any nearby researchers, to check the name of the person she was going to be working with. ‘Aspen, Elinda.’ Huh. Why did that name sound so familiar? There was no picture, oddly enough, maybe it fell out of the file from some clumsy courier or something, so she was left guessing until they met. Whatever that familiarity was, it was escaping her for the time being. She snapped the file shut promptly and tucked it under her arm as she came upon the spot at the dig site they were supposed to meet.

Bandits or something, they’d said? A battle, was what she eagerly heard. Even with all the team rocket stuff going on, she’d been getting slack in her duties, having been given very few actual missions as of late. A few guard details here and there that all turned out pretty boring, short of maybe scaring off some irked grass-types. And with her pokemon, that was a cinch, hardly worth the effort if it weren’t for the work that had been going on by the people she was guarding.

She was going through in her mind what pokemon she had brought with her. Just the two, they were her strongest, and she didn’t think she was likely to need more if her partner also brought along two or three. If not, they’d just have to improvise and compensate, and as long as the partner was competent they’d be fine.

She still couldn't figure out where she knew that name, though. Aspen.

the things that you might like don't grow inside of me

Back to the grindstone it was with her, apparently. Elinda should have been expecting it - almost two weeks had passed since Gilbert's visit and since she had been added to the League's payroll as an active... agent? No, too formal a word. Participant or irregular seemed like far better phrases befitting her role in the organization at this point. Regardless, sooner or later they were going to pull her into things and actually giving her work to do, although the first assignment thankfully wasn't all that different compared to the kinds of things Devon and the Safari Zone had her doing. Hell, she'd done a bit of security work as a trainer long before that as people typically weren't keen to mess with individuals in possession of multiple Gym badges, much less from several distinct regions.

More to the point, though, Elinda would have to thank Gilbert, even if he hadn't done anything. It was hard to say as she wasn't as familiar with the man as she had been with the child, but it was his style to pull a few strings to see that people got the assignments important to them.

It'd only been two weeks, but she was home again. Back in Lilycove, this time not merely as a resident but a League appointed protector.

Not that one would be liable to recognize the place.

It was a very alien thing to see, with most of the city proper cloaked in a wet, white blanket that the vast majority of the tropical island's inhabitants had likely never seen before, at least without traveling beyond the region's borders. As impressive as it was, though, it was an even stranger sight still to witness it rather abruptly stop outside of the city limits, giving way back to the region's typical climate where the jungle and rainforests reigned supreme. And right beyond that snowy border was where her assignment was - a small dig site, set in the foothills overlooking the city. Not too far from her own home, actually, and as Elinda turned to look off to the side from atop Metagross and several dozens of meters in the sky she was able to spy the property, having just narrowly avoided the local and abrupt climate change. Clad in her typical crimson coat and black clothing underneath it, the trainer wasn't on the clock quite yet, having just returned to Lilycove's airspace minutes earlier after receiving the assignment during her stay in Verdanturf. Supposedly there was another trainer already on site, and with any luck that meant things would remain under control long enough for the blond to do a fly over and get a feel for the altered terrain.

This may've been her back yard at one point, but moving a bit of dirt could change a lot in a very short time.

Spotting the League station that had been set up alongside the dig site, Elinda would lean over to pat Metagross above the eye, getting his attention before pointing down to the building in question - not long after, the Iron Leg Pokemon would alter his flight path, bringing the pair down in a gentle descent for landing.

She’d just checked in with those in the little station set up outside the dig site and was exiting the tiny building when she saw what she presumed to be her partner, releasing her pokemon who had begun to get antsy as she exited the building. She got a glimpse of blonde hair and a metagross coming out of the sky. Something about that rang a bell too, but it wasn’t until the other blonde trainer - a woman - landed that Honoka got a feel for who she was. She was a dead ringer for someone she knew; or rather, he was a dead ringer for her. Honoka felt her jaw slacken as she realized who it was, exactly, she was partnered with and why her name sounded so familiar.

Honoka had never actually met Elinda, but she was familiar with the stories, both those told by trainers and those her son, Ryusuke, had told her about his mother. He’d mentioned her by name, and had explained why they didn’t share the same last name when she asked. And despite never having met the woman, she immediately recognized her all the same. It was almost uncanny, actually.

Meanwhile, amid Honoka’s slightly awed, slightly dumbfounded staring, her Metang was having a hayday upon seeing one of its own floating down from the sky. He only ever got that excited around other Metang and Metagross, whilst treating other Beldum with the same disdain a twenty-something year old treats preteens. Honoka would place her hands on her hips and make a little ‘huh’ noise, clipping her pokeballs back onto her belt, trying to put her jaw back in place.

As Elinda landed, Honoka would approach with a bit of a wry smile and wave and offer her hand in greeting. “Nice to officially meet you. I’m...well, I’m not sure ‘friends’ is really quite the right word for it, but I know your son. Ryusuke. On good terms, I think, unless that’s changed since the last time I saw him. I’m Honoka Sato. I've probably heard more about you than you have about me, though,” she'd say with a small chuckle.

the things that you might like don't grow inside of me

As Metagross touched down at the station Elinda saw that she'd indeed been correct about the presence of another trainer... one with impressive Pokemon, no less. Dragonair and Metang weren't all that strong compared to their evolved forms - at least no stronger than your average Pokemon of similar typing that any number of trainers might be carrying - but they did immediately tell Elinda a number of things about the younger woman. First, she either had relatives or similar connections to obtain such difficult to find species as that was how Elinda had acquired hers... or she was a far more experienced trainer than her age would imply, which wouldn't be out of place considering the other thing the two Pokemon in question said. While the same couldn't be said of Dratini to quite the same extent as they were already fairly versatile Pokemon, Beldum were not easy to train unless you were both lucky enough and smart enough to teach them moves aside from Take Down... and even then it tended to be an uphill battle as they were slow growing Pokemon, comparable to titans like Tyranitar, Dragonite and Hydreigon who often took years or even decades to evolve.

It boded well.

Feeling the slight shock of Metagross's legs touching the soft, tropical soil Elinda wasted no time in vaulting over the front of the Pokemon and allowing her knees to absorb the force of the landing, dusting her coat off as the other trainer approached her. She'd been able to tell that the other woman was young from a distance, but not that young now that she was getting a better look at the girl. At a glance Elinda almost had to say she was the same age as-

"... bwah?" It wasn't a word so much as a general sound of confusion as the girl started talking. The sense of familiarity wasn't something Elinda typically expected from other trainers much less people in general, and- hold on. That name. Why did she know that name? Unless-

Oooohhhh, a number of pieces were beginning to fall into place here. She was from Johto... or at least that was the place she had last visited. Elinda was extremely surprised to hear that Ryusuke had opened up to anyone, though, much less about his immediate family. Generally speaking he was a very private person who disliked people prying into his personal matters, and that had gone even for her and his father. The hand that was offered to Elinda went largely unnoticed as the woman continued trying to process what was being said, though, and more importantly why.

Given what she knew of her son and all the information this girl already had-

"You banged." Elinda said blankly, her expression matching her tone of voice. Having actually spoken the words aloud, the older blond snapped back to reality, one hand coming up flat in a gesture to stop Honoka from speaking further, the other pressing down on the bridge of her nose.

Nope. None of her business. More pressing matters to attend to. The Ex or- no. Again. Dropping it.

"Job description said there were bandits in the area, probably planning to raid the dig site. Any sign of 'em?" Elinda said, eyes still shut and hand to her face.

Well, she couldn’t have said that ’bwah/’ had been exactly what she was expecting, but on the other hand, Ryu did warn her about Elinda ahead of time, so she had to wonder how often sound effects like that were commonplace. To Honoka, Elinda looked like she was trying to piece things together, as Honoka hadn’t exactly specified where they knew one another from. She and Ryusuke, that is. She wasn’t sure she’d say they were friendly, but semi familiar sounded about right, at least to her.

She only had begun to notice that Elinda hadn’t taken the greeting when…“You banged.” That...that was not the assumption she had expected Elinda to come to, if she was being honest. Maybe she hadn’t taken Ryusuke’s warning to heart enough? Or maybe he was more open with women than she thought? Or maybe she’d just plain underestimated, or Ryusukle had understated, the warning about his mother.

This.

Was not off to a great start.

Honoka’s face lit up like a beacon at the unexpected accusation? Statement? Whatever it was. She was opening her mouth to deny it, getting only an indignant, strangled sounding squeak out before Elinda held up her other hand to silence her and change the subject. Her mouth remained agape, flabberghasted, unsure of what to do or say or, well, anything at this point. She could only imagine Ryusuke’s own reaction to this: either something along the lines of her’s, or laughing himself hoarse, she was sure. Which helped nothing either way.

And Elinda evidently did not want an explanation, as she moved on to asking about the actual job.

Face still aflame, Honoka closed her mouth and nodded, then shook her head. “I-” By Arceus this was going to be awkward whether this was cleared up or not. She tried again, clearing her throat, “I only just got here a few minutes before you, no sign nor mention of the bandits today as of yet.” She held her tongue, unsure of whether or not to try explaining, if the woman would even listen. This would be quite a story for later, she was sure. Her pokemon, off to her right, certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves, laughing themselves as hoarse as a pokemon could at their trainer’s expense, helping nothing of the situation.

“I didn’t sleep with your son we just battled a few times, he handed me my ass on a silver platter.”

Well, that was one bit of good news. Depending on how you looked at it, anyways. First possibility was that League intel was good, bandits caught wind of the improved security at the dig site and it had scared them off. Best possibility, no conflict and no need for violence. At the same time, though, the least likely as the gang had been dumb enough to be spotted in the first place. Second possibility - League's intel was bad, but with ultimately the same outcome as the first. Problem there was that bad intel was never a good thing since it could lead to a lot of problems elsewhere... silver lining being that if they found out about it here it hadn't been on a job where it could've done some real damage.

The third possibility, though, was the one that kept Elinda on guard as she walked past Honoka to look over the dig site as the younger trainer was struck beet red and left sputtering. Third possibility - they were dumb enough to get seen, dumb enough to try it anyways while trying to be clever about it. That particular option left a lot of room for potential fuck ups on both sides, and chances were that whatever the gang did was going to result in a lot of collateral if they were just outright incompetent. Flip side of that coin... still no good, and Elinda was still mulling over the potential outcomes in her head as Honoka spoke up again from behind her.

"Eh? Oh. .... grrreat?" Elinda responded, barely glancing back and the words spoken carrying heavy emphasis on the older woman's distracted nature. It wasn't that she hadn't heard what Honoka had said, but... dumb criminals and quiet didn't typically go together, and something was still bothering her about the whole scenario. None of the League employees and scientists in the pits below looked out of place and none of the vehicles around the site weren't supposed to be there... so what was it?

At least that was cleared up, or she hoped so anyway. After she mentioned that there hadn't been any sign of the bandits Elinda had become very distracted. It was good to know that Honoka wasn't the only one concerned with the fact they hadn't been around yet and it was nearly midday. Honoka took a deep breath in an attempt to cool her burning face, albeit to no avail. Alright, it was gonna be like that. She gave a side-eyed look to her pokemon who were still sniggering, promptly shutting them up. She sighed to herself and turned back to Elinda who seemed deep in thought, walking past her to look down into the dig site. She basically dismissed her denial of sleeping with Ryu but at least she acknowledged it.

"So, they haven't been around, or they're watching us for all we know. Do we seek them out and take them out, shut them down before they come around? Or do we wait around here and see what happens? I think I'm right when I say something about this feels off, and you noticed it too." Honoka would prefer to smash some heads than sit and wait around, but by this point she also knew that wasn't always the best idea. Plus, this was a team op. She wasn't calling the shots for just herself, if she made the wrong choice she could get other people hurt unnecessarily. She was more than willing to work with her partner, especially if they were competent.

She had only given it brief thought as she came in to the dig site until Elinda got there. She mulled over it again now that Elinda was there. The best options she could think of were unlikely, as the bandits seemed to be looking for something, or at least that's what she assumed based on the information they'd been given. But information could always be wrong or falsified unknowingly, so while they had to trust that the info was good it also should be taken with a grain of salt. She hummed to herself in thought, voicing an idea aloud.

"They've been here every day this week, usually earlier in the morning from what I understand, but they haven't come today. It's likely they heard about us coming, but from what the reports have said I very much doubt that they got scared off just by that. It sounds like they've been looking for something, or found it. I've a feeling that whatever they've been planning is going to go down today. And I don't know about you but I'm ready to stop it.

All reasonable assumptions made by Honoka, and Elinda wasn't about to argue otherwise. Anyone in their right mind would be taking time to reassess and choose another play to make, especially if they knew the other guy was doing the same. There was something to be said for the idea of "he who makes the first move wins", but... truthfully speaking, that wasn't always the case. Far from it if you knew the opponent was coming well in advance, and it was that line of thought that made Aggron her strongest Pokemon by far and why Metagross had never beaten her, even in spite of preparation. The counter play was almost always the one that was going to win just because it was usually a tailored response. The other half of the problem, though, was exactly that. Honoka's assumptions were reasonable.

The people they were dealing with likely weren't.

".... I don't want to leave the dig site. Our job isn't to go looking for the gang but rather to protect what they're after. If they decide to take the day off and the science teams get that much closer to finishing what they're doing? All the better." Elinda said after a moment of thought, although her gaze never left the pits below. Honoka's agreement on the situation feeling off only served to confirm that Elinda was missing something here, and that worried her. It wasn't often that she overlooked details, especially where fights were concerned, and the fact that she tended to think three or four moves in advance... a potential blindspot like that could prove fatal and easily wind up in you getting blind sided later on. For now they had the skies covered with Metagross, Honoka likely had the ground...

"Would you give me a minute? I need the station's PC." Elinda said, speaking again as the abruptly turned and started approaching the League station meant to serve as a management and oversight building for the dig site. In her initial rush to get to Lilycove Elinda had left a number of the Pokemon she'd captured around the Verdanturf area within storage, many of them weakened and tired from the initial few training sessions needed to... well, "break them in" was a horrible phrase to use and not one that Elinda would ever speak aloud, but fact was that they had needed to get used to both her and her other Pokemon. Battling was the best way to do that, and honestly the most direct form of communication that most Pokemon knew. In many cases the only one, especially when a stubborn capture thought itself the dominant player on a team.

Moving to the small prefab building's door, the blond would briskly make her way inside as Metagross remained outside, staring down at the pit from the place his trainer had previously been standing. While it would draw a few questioning stares from the handful of scientists inside no one would stop her from approaching the computer set up towards the back that was standard within most League buildings and Pokemon Centers, booting the device up before logging in and beginning to sort through storage - a few moments later the first Pokeball flashing into existence within the receptacle off to her right.
