"Ooooh, Lucario, look! Caramel-covered apples. And they even sorta look like Applin!"[break][break]

Avery giggles, waving around the sweet treat. Someone bumps her from behind, prompting her to drop it on her dress. It's sticky-coating ensures that she doesn't lose it, but she turns around and around in her search for it. The man at the booth points awkwardly at her dress, and Lucario is the one to retrieve it. [break][break]

The woman blushes, apologizing, before handing the young man some change to pay for the treat. They both turn away and Avery nudges Lucario, winking.[break][break]

"That's for you, okay? Sorry about the lint, if there is any. My treat to you!"[break][break]

Her Pokemon, however, appears bewildered and holds onto the end of the caramel apple. Avery bounces away from him and he hesitates, watching her with an expression that almost could have been stress. When she isn't looking, he nibbles at the treat.[break][break]

Thais knew jackshit about what a Renaissance Faire was, or why people were so into it. It seemed like a kind of boring activity if you asked her. Why would you want to dress up as old, dead, stinky people? The tall woman walked through the crowd, pushing past costumed maidens and bards plucking at out-of-tune strings. At least she'd gotten the message to dress up. Thais didn't really have any of the appropriate Renaissance Faire attire, so she'd just gone with some of her old fisherman clothes instead: faded striped shirt, baggy pants, an old woolen beanie. There. Medieval clam fisher, bam.[break][break]

Before she could wonder why the hell she'd even agreed to go to this shindig - tickets to Fortree City weren't cheap, man! - something caught the sailor's eyes. Something very interesting. "COME TEST OUT YOUR SWORDSMANSHIP!" read the painted wooden sign; beneath it sat a man dressed up as a knight (damn, he was probably sweating like crazy in that suit), taking care of a group of Aegislash. Thais' eyes nearly popped out of her head. [break][break]

"How much to rent one of those swords?" she asked, strolling up to the amateur knight. He lifted his visor and grinned at her. A line of sweat formed above his lips. "Hello, lass! If you be wanting to test out your hand at swordfightin', you'll need a partner! This is a duel!" He gestured broadly towards the fenced-in pen full of hay - apparently, the location of the so-called duel.[break][break]

Thais knit her brows. "Can't you just fight me?"[break][break]

The knight squinted at her. "You'll be needing a partner, lass."[break][break]

She raised her hands in defeat and turned towards the crowd of people. Thais had originally come to the Fair with a few of her co-workers, but they had long since evaporated into the waves of festival attendees. Her amber eyes scanned around for someone suitable - and Thais being the sort of person that she was, her eyes strayed towards the cute girls in the crowd. She spotted a fair-haired woman walking around with a Lucario and decided that she seemed like a good fit. Thais wasn't crazy enough to invite someone super buff to duel her, after all.[break][break]

Adjusting her beanie, the woman mustered up her charm - what was left of it whilst wearing this dingy outfit - and walked up to Avery and her Pokémon. "Hey, miss," she said with a little mock bow - people at this fair seemed to enjoy cringy theatrics, so Thais went along with it. "Would you be up for a... sword fight?" She waggled an eyebrow and motioned to the Aegislash stand behind her. "Dude wouldn't let me go alone." This was certainly one of the stranger pick-up lines she'd tried in her life.[break][break]

Avery is visibly taken off-guard by a young woman in a dingy outfit, beanie and baggy pants and all, approaching her to ask her if she'd like to sword fight. In fact, she stares at her with wide eyes for a good minute, just processing the information.[break][break]

"A sword fight? With you? That sounds dangerous."[break][break]

Lucario nods, confirming the woman's fears. Fortunately for Thais, however, Avery's fear of disappointing complete strangers was greater than her fear of picking up a sword to pretend. After all, it was.. just pretend.. right?[break][break]

"But! I would be happy to try, for you!"[break][break]

"Dangerous is fun!" sang Thais, flashing Avery and her doubtful Pokémon a double thumbs up. The fair-haired woman took a moment to process her request, which was understandable - it wasn't everyday that one was asked to a sword fight. When she finally accepted, Thais beamed. "Great! Follow me, then." The tall, freckled woman spun around on her heels, shouldering her way through the crowd until they reached the stand.[break][break]

"I got a partner now," she announced proudly, strolling up to the man clad in the suit of armor, jabbing a thumb over her shoulder at Avery. He gave her a slightly suspicious look but stepped aside, allowing passage into the pen. The Honedge and Aegislash rumbled in their containment chamber. Thais went to reach for one of the Aegislash, but the knight stopped her. "First-timers use Honedge," he said, passing a Sword Pokémon to her. He'd do the same for Avery if need be.[break][break]

Thais frowned, but since she'd gotten this far, there was no use complaining. The Honedge lay still in her hands, docile and patient, like a pony who's been around the track so many times that nothing no longer surprises them. She experimentally waved the Sword Pokémon around a couple times, feeling its weight. "No aiming for the limbs!" barked the man dressed up as a knight. "They're well-trained. They'll stop if they notice any funny business."[break][break]

The sailor took a spot at the far end of the pen, kicking clumps of hay out from underfoot. She grinned at her opponent, brandishing the Honedge in both hands. "Engarde! First move is yours," said Thais brazenly, assuming a defensive stance. "Oh, my name is Thais, by the way," she added as an after-thought. [break][break]

Avery blanks, staring at her with a strained smile. Danger was good? She could beg to differ. But her own anxiety prevented her from actually saying that out loud, at objecting in any way at all. Instead, she follows after her like a baby duck would her mother.[break][break]

And when the man in charge of the sword-fighting looks at her and seems skeptical - or maybe she's assuming so because she's skeptical, she smiles awkwardly, and strained. But they're quickly ushered into the ring and she's handed a supremely heavy Honedge. In fact, it's so heavy that she at first drags it.[break][break]

The woman whispers apologies to the Pokemon before straining to lift it. There is some definite help from the blade itself, as at some point it seems to become nearly featherless. [break][break]

When Thais kicks at clumps of hay, Avery finds herself mimicking the action, as if concerned that maybe it's a mandatory effort, or she'd look silly if she didn't. Frankly, she looks silly just standing there to begin with. What was she even doing here, holding a sword?[break][break]

Her Lucario stands off to the side, arms crossed and staring at her. He even looks confused and restless.[break][break]

"M-my name is Avery!"[break][break]

And she is prompted to take the first move, so she does, by making a slash way too wide. It misses completely and throws her off balance.[break][break]
