His eyes widen a little when he saw the Slowking. He was very sure that Slowking is a water-type Pokemon. He might have a chance to win this since Twiggy is a grass-type Pokemon! He threw the pokeball from his hand next, coming out of it a pumped, excited and eager looking Turtwig. Mason chuckled softly, amused by the new side of his Turtwig he only recently discovered. His Turtwig seemed to like to battle.

     Having the permission from his opponent, he said softly under his breath, ”Alright then,”. He wanted to test the water first, to see what his opponent is capable of. So he began with a simple move, ”Twiggy use Razor Leaf!””. The little Pokemon let out a battle cry as he lifted his front legs and moved his head downwards in a diagonal, releasing a series of fast moving, crescent shaped leaves, towards the Slowking. Mason’s eyes were as sharp as an eagle to see what his opponent would do.

    Mason was more than shocked when the Slowking and the trainer didn’t even bother about the Razor Leaf attack. Like his trainer, Twiggy was also shocked. He gritted his teeth and clenched his hands into a fist, he would not let his opponent belittle them just like that.

     When Mason saw the opening of the Slowking using raindance, he immediately made a move, ”Twiggy go in and use Crunch on its tail!”, he instructed with a finger pointing at the Slowking. He gritted his teeth, hoping that his opponent won’t pull off any weird moves to put him and Twiggy at a disadvantage.

    It really shocked Mason when the Slowking stayed calm and collected even though its tail was bleeding. He noticed that the Slowking’s eyes was shining and wondered what kind of trick was pulled by it. ”Twiggy go and use Crunch again!” Mason exclaimed. 

     But when the Turtwig was about to open its jaw, it closes again, again and again no matter how many times the Turtwig tried. ‘Oh no. So this is what the sparkling eyes does.’ Mason said to himself.

    Mason didn’t even know such move existed! Restricting a Pokemon from using a move. He had a lot to learn before he could even challenge one of the gym leaders. He had already wasted a move when he tried to order Twiggy to use Crunch, so the Slowking had the opening to attack. The move hit and it sent the Turtwig hurling to the ground. ”Twiggy!” Mason shouted. A trainer worried about his Pokemon. 

     The Turtwig stood after taking the full on blast of the Water Pulse. Relief washed over Mason’s face when he realise that his Pokemon was still standing. But then he realised... that his Turtwig was walking a little bit funny. Realising that he was still in a battle, he took the chance to immediately counterattack. ”Twiggy use Razor Leaf!”. The turtle Pokemon swayed its head around a bit longer than usual. ”Err... Twiggy?”, the Turtwig then finally released a set of blade like leaves but it boomeranged back, hurting itself. 

     Mason was more than shocked he had never had his Pokemon get confused before, ”Oh no...” he muttered as he dropped and crouched on the ground. Both of his hands dug deep inside his hair while he shook his head slowly, ”Not like this...”.

    Mason literally did not know what to do. His Turtwig ate the damage Water Pulse. He kinda felt like giving up already, but knew better and the best way to lose is to lose with dignity. ”Alright buddy, let’s try this again, use tackle!”. 

     Mason guessed that it would be easier to use a move that only requires you to plummet yourself towards the Pokemon. But he guessed wrong, the Turtwig did charged at the Slowking, but missed by a long shot. Mason was quite embarrassed and began to unconsciously pull his hair down to try covering his face.

    The Turtwig took the full blow of the psychic energy, it flew back across the field. ”Twiggy!” Mason shouted, a trainer scared of his dear Pokemon. After having crashed to the ground, the Turtwig tried to stand back once again. 

     Mason gulped, the atmosphere was tense. Was Twiggy going to make it? Or will the battle end there? To the boy’s relief, the Turtwig was on all fours, and his eyes darted at the Slowking. 

     Mason knew what his Pokemon was thinking immediately, “Razor Leaf!” he exclaimed. The Turtwig shook its head, a series of blades of leaves appeared and were making its way towards the Slowking.
