It felt like the Ambassador-specific assignment in Kanto had come and gone so fast that it felt like just yesterday he was helping his uncle 'draw' up new business plans in the basement of the Game Corner.

Now he was back looking into the resolved gazes of so many familiar faces. Hoenn had been good to him over the last year to bless him with so many solid people.

They weren't as close as others but Sénon counted Anderson among those he considered solid. In fact, in terms of being solid Lars was an iceberg in the arctic.

"What, no welcome back?"

“Where’ve you been?”

Those were the first words he blurted out the moment he noticed the redhead. As always, he was eating through a snow cone (and this time it was green apple-flavored) as he meandered through the area before finding his way towards where Sénon awaited.

It was time for the Head Rangers to go head to head.

“Everything’s been utter shit,” was all he rumbled, taking another bite from the snow cone. Looking over to where one particular snow cone cart was following him around (he’d done it again, buying out an entire snow cone stall for the day) he gestured at it.

“Want one before we start?”

He held up his pointer finger to recite his official reason and capacity for access into his home region. Security sure as hell grilled him into memorizing it by asking him every day. "Hoenn's Ambassador to Kanto was required to make an appearance and sign documentation upholding open trade for the two regions." Also though, there was some family business that needed by tended to. "My uncle makes the best pasta in the region. Its not a common dish in Kanto."

There seemed to be a nice chill that followed Lars around.

It was probably better to keep him near, warding off some of that tropic humid heat he loathed. The idea of a snow cone was tempting but something about it just being crudely flavored ice made him want to pass.

He skipped right over snow cones and starting thinking about sherbet and ice cream.

"Kinda." He was a ranger, they were men and women of action. Willful and confident; "Kinda" was no commitment coming from a ranger.

“Welcome back then,” he said with a bit of snark as he demolished the green apple-flavored snow cone before another one was randomly slapped into his hand after the previous cup was disposed of.

He didn’t even know what flavor the new cone was until he took a big bite out of it.

“Huh. Alolan,” he remarked as he noticed the snow cone was a bright shade of red—just like the other man’s hair.

“Oh really,” he continued at the pasta remark. “I’d like to try that and see if it can compare to the secret pasta recipes from Alto Mare.”

Either way—

“Are you looking for any specific kind of battle?”

At this point he was pretty sure he’d participated in most of the available formats and gotten most of those mini-challenges done—well, except for one particular status condition he was supposed to be adept at inflicting. Hopefully the other wouldn’t notice.

Up until now he hadn't given the variable of battle rules much thought. He was a bit itched for a double battle.

"Double Battle? Monferno only?" There was another thought...

"Would you-know-who make an appearance for a mere pokémon battle?" Personally Sénon still didn't know who 'you know who' was. Apparently Cait did, but it wasn't for him to ask Cait to share Lars' business that he confided in her.

He didn't really want to battle whatever fabled pokémon choose Anderson as their human proxy, but how could he not ask?

The other question wasn’t missed on him, he knew that Sénon was from the region where his deity came from, or at the least aware that the Winged Mirage that was hiding somewhere. Normally the deity would be either sleeping or snarking the fuck out of him, but today—

Well, if it’s a show they wanted it’s a show they’ll get!

‘I thought this was supposed to be a secret!’

‘Well, they know I’m part of that stupid shit—how do you explain all the merchandise?’

‘Don’t you dare mention the merchandise again! It’s embarrassing!’

‘Glad to know I’m not the only one dying of embarrassment on a constant basis here.’

Once he’d retrieved the containment unit that had his Infernape in it, he wondered what the second Pokémon the redhead would choose. Interestingly he only had one shrunken-down Level Ball with him.

‘Fine, fine, if you say so. Although I daresay. Why didn’t she tell him?’

‘I guess she wanted to let him see this for himself. Get ready.’

He'd stalled long enough. He asked Lars for it so he wasn't going to back down now.

To his side he called two fire types; one big and one small. Both of them tastefully rare.

The smaller of the two, didn't seem eager to battle, hiding behind the red-Rangers leg and climbing.

"Don't be afraid." He took the little shiny into a hug as it jumped onto his chest before eventually pulling him off and standing him on the ground.

He'd been a in couple of fights but he seemed afraid of Lars. Or maybe he just understood the scale of the battle he was being made to participate in.

"Hey..." He tipped up the chimchar staring timid at his feet, bringing their eyes together. "It's not about winning, its about learning."

He soothed it by patting its back but soon enough pulled him off. He didn't have a name yet but the Shiny Chimchar understood what was expected of it.

Once the other man revealed his choices, his eyebrows shot up.

Ooh.

“Speaking of which,” he remarked as his own Infernape appeared out of the Level Ball he was tossing, “…that Heatran living in Mount Chimney put up one hell of a fight. D’you know they’ve opened that Heatran to training? Like, people can test their strength against it. What kind of a moveset did you teach it?!”

He could remember the endless spam of molten lava…

‘Hah… I hated that.’

‘I know. Well, time to get revenge I guess?’ he cracked, before the deity gave him a snort of snarky laughter and then the clouds above them split apart—revealing the Articuno in all their (unamused) glory.

“You can go first.”

Lars' casual cool caught him off guard while a proxy of fucking Articuno wafted in the air above them.

For a second the redhead's mouth sat agape.

"I don't know what to say. . ." He kinda forgot he wasn't required to say anything. It had to be impolite to stare at a god but each time it happened he was so caught off guard.

That's what made it surreal that the way he felt on the inside seeing Articuno is how Lars reacted on the outside seeing his Heatran and inquiring about the other one. "The magmutt?"

He'd sent it back to dahlia goode in rare form but still a little sooner than he'd have liked.

"Well its kinda rare but have you ever heard of DARK SHIV POWDER?" He didn't know who the hell "shiv" was, but as far as curry spices went, D.S.P. was probably the most luxurious, most effective and by far the most rare spice to come buy.

You couldn't even buy it in stores.

But if Lars had ever fed any to his own pokémon he'd understand instantly.

Right then and there a burst of heat came screaming towards the deity, and Lars could hear all manner of profanities being thrown by the Winged Mirage above them.

“One sec,” he said in Sénon’s direction before looking up at the iceborne deity, “You’re losing it again, you know?!” before breaking into a bark of laughter, which got him the ‘stink eye’ in displeasure before a torrential burst of ice came crashing down to counter the molten lava with a Blizzard attack.

More profanities were hurled his way in the back of his mind, before he turned to face the redhead again.

“I’ve heard about that stuff. Some kind of Hoenn-specific specialty, apparently it’s so rare the price for it in other regions is ridiculous.”

Down on the ground the Infernape, sizing up his little counterpart, chuckled before Taunting the smaller simian to attack him.

“Wukong, what did I tell you earlier? We’re here to guide, remember? Not stomp around!”

Articuno met Magma Storm with Blizzard, while Infernape used Taunt on Chimchar!

The moment the battle kicked off Lars started acting strange.

He turned to the articuno and the body language between the two suggested they were 'openly' having a dialogue.

Though, Sénon couldn't hear anything. Cait seemed to communicate with Celebi through feelings and emotions rather than full on linguistics. It was kind of blowing his mind.

"Are you talking to it? Him? ...Her?" It made sense, some kind of psychic connection between the chosen and the chooser.

A TAUNT sent Chimchar into a small frenzy, he was afraid but he didn't like being mocked for it. Anger made his fear evaporate. Heatran, was just going through the motions.

Heatran used MAGMA STORM!

Chimchar used ACROBATICS!
_{items don't exist on Hoenn; damage doubled!}
^{its super effective against Infernape!}

Heavy damage (176) from one blow on a first stage pokémon to its final stage counterpart; talk about an ego check.

The infernapes' would be deflated as the spry ACROBATICs of the smaller primate allowed the shiny to deliver powerful blows to his biological superior; taking advantage of the weakness to flying-types chimchar didn't have.

“Them, actually. They don’t want to be defined by gender,” he corrected, before another fiery shower of lava came rushing up.

Another shriek of displeasure shook the area as this time, a blast of intense Sheer Cold was dropped on the incoming deluge of magma.

Down on the ground, the Infernape allowed himself to get hit by the Acrobatics attack; however two could apparently play that game—

Wherein the Infernape them threw the younger version of himself around with his own Acrobatics stunt!

“…I think Wukong’s trying to toughen up your Chimchar,” he remarked.

Articuno met Magma Storm with Sheer Cold this time, while Infernape used Acrobatics on Chimchar!

Though the infernape had a flying-type weakness chimchar didn't have, infernape was far stronger being at its peak form while chimchar was still growing.

Yet, with that TAUNT still holding chimchars anger he was urged to attack, but now on Sénon's orders.

While the legend and the mythical pokémon traded blows of ice and magma. If the type match ups were any indication Articuno was about to fall behind. "SWITCH!"

SHEER COLD was a ballsy move to attempt; three out of ten times it knocked out the target pokémon cold, no pun intended.

But, since Sénon was destined to win this match, SHEER COLD didn't work so when chimchar jumped off of Heatran's metal head to get closer to the Kanto legend it was left wide open for a stream of flames to the face; NASTY PLOT finally coming in handy.

Leaving heatran itself to shake the foundation beneath infernape's feet.

So now it was a switching game, huh?

“Leap!” he called out, watching as the Infernape bolstered himself and fought through the slog of obstacles that were now crashing his way.

“Strike!”

A Mach Punch was thrown at quick speeds towards the Infernape once he’d gotten through the obstacle. Up in the air, though—

A blast of fire met a blast of ice; Ice Beam attempting to cancel out the Flamethrower.

Articuno met Flamethrower with Ice Beam this time, while Infernape used Mach Punch on Heatran!

With Articuno throwing ice and all manner of cold at every fire attack they made there a break in strategy.

Ignore the frigid bird, focus on the surround-able fighter.

Heatran didn't like the punches in the least but he was such a big target chimchar was easily able to hop on the infernape while he attacked the magma-gecko, delivering more ACROBATIC knees and elbows to the larger ape's head and back.

Heatran then repeating its ground leveling ruptures under infernapes feet, with any luck it wouldn't get back up again.

How many super effective blows could he tank before he tanked.
