River's already left the house by the time he presses 'send' on his last text to Oscar. This is either a testament to how much he likes the man, or how impatient or eager he is to get out of the house.[break][break]

Just kidding, he wasn't at his house- he was just in some random cafe or coffee shop borrowing wi-fi. Apparently these places boasted 'free wi-fi' but got pissed off when you didn't buy anything.[break][break]

It ain't fuckin' free then, was it? People really needed to change their signs.[break][break]

Regardless, as a result of his impatience, River doesn't catch the couple messages Oscar sends afterward telling him to meet in like four hours. So here he is and has been, waiting by the fountain for that familiar head of white hair.[break][break]

Now this? This was a testament to how much he liked the guy.[break][break]

Though he's definitely a bit impatient, leaving and coming back several times. It's a good thing there'd been plenty of places to window shop. No wi-fi though, apparently.

Oscar was in a panic all day. His heartrate was running so fast that you'd think it were training for a 10k. Not only was he going to have to have a very uncomfortable conversation after work with his crush, but said crush was probably spending the entire day waiting for him. Between Oscar running away and then keeping him waiting, there was no doubt that River was going to be pissed as hell. The very thought made Oscar ill, he couldn't concentrate on anything because he was too busy worrying about what would happen that evening.

What River told him at the ice cream truck--and over text--well it scared Oscar shitless. How was he supposed to handle this? Should Oscar just turn him down flat out? It'd save them both a lot of pain in the future. Yet when Oscar thought of that smile, those bright eyes, how the fuck could he say no to that? In the end Oscar decided it would be best to just be honest. He would rip his chest open and let his baggage just flow freely. River could decide for himself what to do from there.

Work ended, and the sun was starting to set. Oscar walked toward the fated meeting spot, his hands clammy as they fidgeted in his pockets. He came upon the fountain, and there he was. Oscar gulped heavily, praying that River hadn't been waiting there all this time. He approached cautiously, attempting to get his attention by raising a hand.

"H-hey River. I'm here!"

River is rolling his head on his shoulders, glancing about, tapping his foot, standing idly by while the minutes tick away. How long has it been? His phone is on low by now because he never has the sense to charge it, and the sun is starting to go down.[break][break]

He wasn't being ghosted, was he? No, that's ridiculous. No one ghosts the Riv-man. Scratch that, no Riv-man, that was lame.[break][break]

But just as he's trying to come up with a cool nickname for himself, a familiar voice catches his attention and, like the lovesick puppy he is, River snaps to attention. He puts on a beaming face as if he hasn't just been standing around waiting all of this time. Honestly, he isn't even sure what it is about this guy that leaves him so forgiving.[break][break]

Maybe it's the stutter in his voice and the glasses.[break][break]

"Oscar, daaang! You clean up nice!"[break][break]

And for once, he meant it. For once, this wasn't just an attempt to get into someone's pants. For once, the smile on his face is genuine.

Oscar was stunned by River's response. He didn't know what exactly he was expecting, but it certainly wasn't joy. That smile, those beaming eyes, it was a lot to take in. Oscar's heart somehow beat even faster, his fingers fidgeting with the cuffs of his sleeves as he tried to hide his blushing cheeks.

"Y-y-you're not mad?" Was all Oscar could get out, his gaze trying to find anything to rest on besides the beautiful visage of River's face. Oscar twitched as his fidgeting increased, "I um--thought you would be mad. My last text never got through an-and I ran away earlier..." Oscar abruptly straightened up, bowing slightly as his tone became more stern.

"I am so-so sorry River. I didn't mean to hurt you if I did, I can be complicated."

Oscar resisted the urge to run again, almost shivering as he waited for River's response.

River is unpredictable, unrealistic, unreasonable.[break][break]

But more than that, he is a genuine person, with rough edges and cracks and chips. Waiting for him hadn't been an issue because he had been so sure that he would show. And he had, imagine that! Imagine never being wrong about anything - couldn't be River.[break][break]

"Mad?"[break][break]

Oh, right, the text messages. At the mention of it, he opens up his phone. The last messages Oscar had sent still haven't shown up, of course, and he appears unbothered and indifferent.[break][break]

"I like complicated."[break][break]

River's confident grin softens into something more genuine and relaxed as he tucks his chin and watches the man. The anxious fidgeting, the stuttering, the apologizing, it only fuels River's intrigue and interest.[break][break]

"And.. you came back, you're right here. So.. does that mean you're into me, too?"
