Trainers who managed to collect eight badges for the purpose of challenging the elite four were far and few between— but never before had anyone mustered the courage to issue an official challenge to Katherine Fairburne.

It was about time that changed.

After making his appointment, Kazimir found that his challenge could take place in no more than a week’s time. Quick, relative to other queues.

“Mm… From other members? No, I can’t save I have.”

Katherine enters the room without making a sound, almost as if having phased through the door like one of her very own ghosts. “But I do remember you, Kazimir Wynter. Or do you prefer Pokkenger?” A smile coats her lips, venomous and taunting. She remembered the Excursion still.

“Oh, did I?”

The hint of surprise in her tone is convincing, as though she didn’t actually remember doing what Kazimir accused her of. “I wonder what made me do that.”

As if the man was insistent on souring her mood further, he sends out a familiar Ninetales from one of his capsules - the same one that dared to strike her during the encounter with Rocket and… other, less cooperative ‘allies’ of the League. It cursed her the last time— didn’t it?

“Ah. I remember your fox.”

She sends out a Mimikyu who takes to the stage almost naturally, its beady, dark eyes staring ahead at its opponent.

Both of them, that is.

“The first move is yours, Kaz.”

Kazimir’s Ninetales finds that its WILL O WISP has an easier time homing in on Katherine’s Mimikyu. Due to its innate ability, DISGUISE, the ghost-type makes no effort to dodge the spectral orbs of fire.

“Get in there,” short and concise. As the orbs travel, so does Mimikyu, who seems intent on closing the distance between itself and the fire-type. Before it arrives, however, the Ninetales’ attack manages to knock off its shroud, consuming it in flames.

But no damage is sustained.

“Attack.”
[break][break]
Now that it’s their turn, the Mimikyu leaps around and about, obscuring its movements with plumes of smokes as it PLAYS ROUGH with its opponent.

“yes,” leisure and laidback, almost lacking in care, katherine seems to agree with kazimir’s tactic. So much so that she asks her own partner to replicate their opponent’s technique.

“You as well, spook. Scream of the dead, or whatever it’s called.”

The COPYCAT requires no further information. The patterns of its enemy give away the nature of their attack and move, causing the Mimikyu to imitate the fox as dark energies are called upon in a silent scream, unleashing a similarly-sized vortex of evil energies. They clash and an explosion follows, signaling that neither managed to overcome the other.

“Aw.”

Sarcasm coats her disappointed tone.

Katherine’s humming is loud enough even for Kaz to hear from the opposite side of the arena. She appears less and less worried by the flaming orbs sent in the direction of her partner, merely expecting them to meet their mark.

Especially this time around.

“I suppose you may as well stay put, Spook. Close the distance only when I tell you to.”

In other words, ranged attacks were their only option. A devious SHADOW SNEAK slithers across the floor as it creeps to its target, striking with a swipe at remarkable speed.

Mimikyo’s condition didn’t seem so promising now. The effects of the WILL O WISP prove almost lethal, gradually chipping away at the ghost-type’s health. It puts a clock on their fight, just as the prior curse did.

Who will last longer?

For now, the question remains unanswered. The Ninetales’ howl ensures that the SHADOW SNEAK will be kept at bay for the remainder of the fight, and such is a price that both Katherine and Mimikyu are willing to pay.

Mostly due to what it brings to the table for them.

Only a true COPYCAT such as the elite four’s ghost can find itself in a celebratory mood following such a move from their opponent. Rather than wallowing in sorrow and self-pity, Mimikyu DISABLES the fox’s own move, DISABLE.

They’re back to stage one, aren’t they?
