Raine stood star-struck with her small telescope under the crook of her arm as the field of flowers opened up in front of her. Like a wave of holographic light, the buds shivered and bloomed, each releasing a small beacon of light into the night air. Ranging in color from ice blue to pale pink, the effect was breathtaking.

She’d come out to do her favorite thing-- gaze at the stars, unhindered by human lights-- but whispers of such a phenomena had directed her path to this field. Now she found the earthbound sights more captivating than the heavens, which was a rarity for her.

Gently placing her telescope on the ground, she fell to her knees to better examine the crystablooms.

RUMORS ARE HARDLY WRONG IN HOENN.

the widespread contagion of supernatural phenomena have become a regional staple. these crystablooms are a mild and welcome reprieve from the typical chaos that unfolds every quarter. but fernando’s task is not to enjoy their scenic flowering.

he is here to observe.

their light is simply sublime. it dazzles with just the right spark to steal his breath away. fireworks and lightshows come with every ceremonial event but they’re planned, artificial, symmetrical. something about the unnatural order of nature brings a twinge of authenticity that cannot be replicated. the ghastly goosebumps of grey, gelatinous skin serve as a stark reminder.

“beautiful, aren’t they?”

his voice cuts straight through stem and stalk. he doesn’t belong here, evident in the way the scene shatters upon his intrusion.

“these… crystablooms.”

Having spent most of her life under the night sky, swathed in darkness and surrounded by mysteries, Raine is not the type to startle. She closed her eyes at the sound of FERNANDO SILPH ’s voice, and let her head hang back, fingertips lingering on the illuminated blooms.

“Stunning,” she agrees, chin turning to peer over the curve of her shoulder. Tides of honey-gold hair flow down the curve of her cheek, catching the finer notes of the glowing flowers, reflecting them like stars fallen to earth. “And made all the more wonderful by their mystery.”

She finds a clear spot to set the tripod legs of her small telescope; they slide out and lock with a click. Her fingers work with practiced ease to prepare her equipment. “What do you think causes such… irregularity?”

there are plenty of theories in circulation. as a new phenomenon, many publish their ideas quickly. not because they believe in them. no. they look to throw random conjectures like darts against a board, hoping something sticks when the truth is revealed.

credibility is built being proactive.

“no idea. so much has been happening in hoenn lately.”

MISTY TERRAIN starts to permeate from his body. it rises from between the invisible pores in the fabric of his clothes. it settles over the flowers nicely, accentuating their glistening sparkles.

“i would fashion my guess that it has something to do with the distortions they’ve been reporting on the news.”

“Realistically,” she echoes back at him, sliding one hand down the length of her telescope. She is a scientist, after all. She deals best in realism. Or should, at least.

The mist flows around her legs, between the triangle of her tripod, like a river. Instead of covering the flowers, diluting their glow, it seems to intensify them.

It’s a curious thing, a mist that sprouts as though from nowhere. Raine turns to look at the stranger-- not really a stranger, in truth. She knows him, of course. Most do.

“It wouldn’t be a stretch to assume such,” she says, tilting her telescope back, letting it settle with the eyepiece end hanging downwards. “But I must say, I like a good puzzle. Having answers for everything is boring.” Like how you just used a Pokemon move, with no Pokemon in sight.

She meets his eye.

the MISTY TERRAIN wafts under his mind and will. like a trained muscle, he is able to loosely guide its path and travel. plumes starts to coil around her but the display is just theatrics. it falls on its own accord after his reply.

“but being stuck without pieces and none of them fitting is anything but.”

his eyes hook onto hers like the very pieces they’re missing.
