Night had truly fallen, by the time, Tilly had made it to Rustboro. Cloudless and pitch black. Except for a small number of twinkling stars flickering, faintly far, far away. “The Pokemon Center must be nearby. At least, I hope so.”

It had been a long and rather nerve-wracking walk through the woods, and all Tilly wanted was to climb into a warm, comfy bed and then carry on with her adventure in the morning. A faint chill blew through, causing Ryuu to tighten his grip around her neck. Not enough to hurt her, but, enough so that she knew he was there.

Then, footsteps sounded. The rattle of metal, maybe the noise of a trash can falling over. Ryuu looked up and Tilly slowed her steps. A P-Pokémon, maybe? Hiding in the darkness?

But then a voice sounded from the darkness. “That’s a pretty nice Pokémon, you got there. How ‘bout ya leave it with me? I’ll take real good care of it.”

Tilly felt her face, drain of blood. She couldn’t move. A man, dressed all in black, walked out from the divide between the two nearest buildings, where he had clearly been skulking in the darkness. Waiting for someone to pass by.

“Hey, kid. I won’t say it again. Gimme that dragon and no-one gets hurt,” a malicious grin cuts across the man’s face. He reached down to his belt and pulled a Pokéball from it. It burst open, revealing a white, furred, mongoose-like Pokémon with long claws.

He hadn’t intended on being in Rustboro until this late, but it would seem as if the work of a ranger is never really over. His official assignments had been dealt with and he was on his way to take a Corviknight taxi back to Slateport City when he heard it; the chirping, ceaseless and desperate. Two Pidove had fallen from their precariously-located nest, too young to fly and with their parents being nowhere in sight. Naturally, Tam did what any ranger would do, and picking up both pokémon, he took them to the nearest pokémon centre.

Two hours later, nighttime has fallen.

Truth be told, Tam wants nothing more than to head home, but it’s then that a much different sound catches his attention. Voices. Threats. Something about a kid handing over a dragon.

Well, that doesn’t sound good at all.

There’s nothing heroic about his entrance, he just walks into the scene – hands in his pockets, clad in a ranger uniform, and wearing the most unfazed expression there is. He looks at the man, he looks at the pokémon, and then he looks at the girl. And, seeming extremely calm despite the tense situation before him, he asks her a simple question then:

”Is this guy bothering you?”

As one, the Man-in-Black and his Zangoose stepped forward. Cold, malicious grins cut over both of their faces. “Give me that dragon, you little brat.”

Her face had by, at this point, faded of all color, and she could barely feel her legs.

Frightened out of her wits, Tilly took a step backwards, slipped, and fell onto her backside. “This is your last chance. Hand it over or Zangoose will slice you up. Got it?” As if to clarify, the Zangoose began to press its claws together, repeatedly. Each time it did so, a dull clanking sound echoed out. Almost like metal on metal.

Tilly closed her eyes, unsure of what was about to happen next. Too frightened to even ask Ryuu to defend her from this threat. Then a voice sounded out, a different voice. A very calm, almost effortless voice. Her eyes flicked back open, and she caught the sight of a man with his hands buried in his pocket.

“He… he wanted to… steal my Dratini,” Tilly said, in barely more than a whisper.

“Get out of here, pretty boy. Or you’ll be next. I’ll take both of ‘ya Pokémon for the glory of Team Rocket,” he grinned and pointed directly at Tilly.

“Ignore the guy and get that dragon, Zangoose. Crush Claw.”

Zangoose jumped into the air; the long black claws turned white, as if filled with great energy, and then flew down directly at Tilly. Clearly not caring if it took her head off as long as it completed the orders it had been given.

Ah, so that’s what’s going on.
[break][break]
Tam sighs, and judging by his expression, anyone could probably easily assume that he’s bored. Which, to be honest, he kind of is, but that’s not the girl’s fault...
[break][break]
It’s just that this is not the first time he has had to deal with a member of Team Rocket, and it definitely won’t be the last. Usually, Tam doesn’t mind them much, but when pokémon are involved… Well, that’s when it becomes a matter he cannot and will not ignore.
[break][break]
”...Kay.” While his hands had indeed been in his pockets, they had been holding onto minimised pokéballs, and it’s from one of these green Friend Balls that a Snorlax is swiftly released to stand between the girl and the Zangoose. The huge pokémon looks down at the assailant, barely seeming to care for the way the CRUSH CLAW bounces off almost harmlessly against the thick skin.

From the other Friend Ball, a Yamper is released, and after taking a second to assess the situation, she begins barking at the thief – ears back, tail raised, and hackles up.

”How about you say sorry to the girl and get out of here? I’d really rather not deal with the hassle of going to the station…”

His demeanour lies in heavy contrast with that of the small electric type – crackling electricity mingling with each of her incessant and high-pitched barks.
