The air was particularly pleasant today. The irresistible scent of a sea-breeze sent shivers down Jax's back. The remarkable smell did nothing to quelle his nerves, if anything it heightened them. He could not focus on the matter at hand, his mind was too busy being pulled toward the sea. The ocean was beautiful today, with the waves just right for casual wading--or perhaps a dramatic stare into the horizon.

Jax shook his head, he was not here to day dream! This was his big break, a chance to prove that he had what it took to be a ranger! His basic training was nearly done, and today he would be given his first field mission by his soon-to-be commanding officer. What was their name again? Oh drat, he should have read the briefing more thoroughly. What a terrible first impression this will be, unable to even remember the name of his future captain!

Ugh, enough of that worrying. Jax dismissed his intrusive thoughts as if they were fussing handmaids, as easily as the wind carried the sea's salt. Worrying would get him exactly nowhere, all he must focus on was exuding the confidence within his heart. With his back straight, hands on his hips, and a smile that could kill, Jax awaited the arrival of--Tam Fawley! That was his name, oof what a weight off his shoulders.

Thankfully for Jax Cox (or not so thankfully), his soon-to-be commanding officer was also pretty damn bad at remembering people’s names. He was also pretty damn bad at this whole “social interaction” thing, honestly, but that much was probably proven obvious when he showed up wearing the most impassive expression there had ever been.

”You’re the new recruit?” No names spoken. He knew it was something along the lines of ‘Jax’ or so, but since he wasn’t sure, he didn’t say anything. Better off that way for both of them, avoid that potential awkwardness and annoyance.

”We’re just going on a typical patrol along the beach. Should be pretty calm. Feel free to ask any questions about rangers stuff if you have them.”

He only said as much as he found necessary. No more, no less. Tam had never been much of a talkative man and he would not start today. That would have just been too much damn effort on his part.

Jax had yet to be shown a picture of Mister Tam Fawley, so when a tired looking blonde pretty boy marched up to him Jax did a cautious double take. Jax's eyes said 'Can I help you?' while his polite smile said 'How can I help you?', that vibe.

When the man asked if Jax was the nee recruit, poor Jax nearly fainted from how rigid his body got. He stood up straight, taking the at attention stance they make recruits do in basic training.

"Yes sir! Jack Cocklyn sir! Call me Jax sir!"

Jax went from hiding his nerves pretty well to letting them out in the open like dogs on a sunny Sunday. As Tam mentioned today's mission and that he would answer any of Jax's questions, Jax would do a small salute. "Yes sir! I will follow you to hell and back sir! Or just down the street if that's what you'd prefer sir!"

This was already going poorly.

Thankfully for someone like Jax Cox, Tam had never been the kind of man to have a propensity to judge others. He simply accepted people as they were, having little to no expectations when it came to their behaviour. If Jax wanted to be eager and loud and formal and all of that, then so be it, but by contrast Tam himself was as calm and aloof as can be.

Not thankfully for someone like Jax, Tam’s general aloofness could easily come off as him disliking what he’s dealing with.

”Just Tam is fine. No need to call me sir, Jax.” He responded, and as he did so, he began walking. After all, he had been honest with what he had said: he was here to patrol the beach, and he sure as hell intended to do so while meeting his new cadet.

”You’re from Unova, right? Castelia?”

Tam himself had been born and raised in Icirrus, but to some people his accent made that be more than obvious.
