aries wasn't much of the forest-exploring type. too many allergies to really enjoy them, and, most of the time, she had too many other things to worry about than some assortment of trees and whatever pokemon would be frightened enough to jump out at her.

but things had slowed to a near halt, recently, so that aries was left unsure of what to do with her free time. she had thought about going to fallarbor town, but the idea of seeing craters from old impacts left a bad taste in her mouth.

so she had traveled to petalburg, half-telling herself there was probably something she could do there. some relocation of pokemon, or some rescue of something a kid refused to evacuate without. but, like a switch, the weight of the situation had really sunk in the second she got there.

for once, aries let herself be aimless in her wandering instead.

lethe doesn't wander aimlessly. they always walk with a purpose, always know exactly where they're going, always know why… except when they don't. they suppose now is one such time, where lethe finds themself in need of fresh air.

they’d been driven to petalburg in a desperation to find a job, any job. with the meteor, things had only grown more scarce, they’d found. they can’t keep living off of nothing, though. times like this they wish they’d chosen a more stable path. they need to be able to afford to live until they die, after all.

and then they see her. that cursed, blue-haired woman with pronouns. they’re beginning to think she’s stalking them at this rate; the amount which they run into each other can not be purely chance. something, something, statistics, lethe doesn’t know — the moment anyone talks mathematical statistics to them has always been the moment lethe shuts their ears off.

there’s no escaping her, now. she’s too close, and has almost definitely seen them by now. deciding to give her the benefit of the doubt (maybe she knows of a job?), lethe gears themself up to approach.

it takes aries longer than she’d like to admit to realize she’s not the only one wandering around petalburg. part of her wants to blame it on the size of the city, of her aimless wandering, but she knows the truth. and she knows it’s just because she’s let her guard down, too distracted by other things to really pay attention to the approach of someone else.

even then, it isn’t even anything important that makes her glance up enough to see that white haired near-stranger. aries feels like they’re a deer in the headlights after that, although less out of fear and more out of a sense of dear arceus don’t make me struggle through another awkward conversation before I die. she doesn’t think she can handle another birthday celebration.

they’re half-tempted to just go on their way and pretend they had never seen lethe— it didn’t seem like petalburg had much for them to do, after all— but it was probably obvious that she had already seen them, unfortunately for them both. and, in a way, she still owes them for protecting her.

so, feeling like the universe’s own personal punching bag, she raises her hand in a halfhearted wave.
