He’d thought long and hard about not going to this shindig. Actually, he was amazed his request to go had been approved.

His cloak was long enough to cover the tracking band strapped to his anklet. A soft priority, put in place now that the dome was gone and the threat of him running back home was, in the eyes of authority, very real.

Fox suppresses the nervous tick to pick at his gloves and hovers at the edge of a crowd of those arriving fashionably late. Already a stranger to Hoenn, and now protected by a masque, there was little chance of anyone guessing his identity-- though the green streak in his hair would be a dead giveaway to the three people he’d spent any time with.

Once upon a time, in his academic years, he’d been quite the social butterfly. There was nary a mixer or congress he skipped, if only because he enjoyed sharing the space of his peers, and stimulating conversation. Now the thought of crowds and noise made his skin crawl, and he felt uncomfortable in spaces where he couldn’t directly put a wall at his backside.

If he was being honest?

He wanted to stay as far away as possible from any social gatherings, for the moment. He’d never felt so fucking drained because of what had gone down, plus the fact that the second voice in the back of his head hadn’t been responding for a while? Well, that was a mite concerning.

But he knew that they’d asked for some time to recover. He just wondered how long it would take for the iceborne mirage to actually fully recover from that harrowing ordeal.

So right now, he felt… well, he felt mentally ‘naked’ if one caught the drift.

Even if he was wearing the nicest suit he could find across the two closets he maintained (this one came from home at Verdanturf), he had a feeling shit would go wrong…

Not even the Lucario-themed mask he had on would fully conceal him, because his height alone practically gave him away.

(The good thing here was that he’d gone to the party hair down, so.)

He thought he saw a familiar streak of green, and then made to follow the other—rumbling once he was close enough.

“I never pegged you for a social butterfly,” was the first thing he said in Fox’s direction.

Fox freezes, mind whipping through all the possible exit strategies, from a jerked-back elbow to the throat to a spinning leg-sweep to a crouch-and-turn suplex to--

He doesn’t relax, really, but he makes a show of it by letting his arms fall, fingertips pressed to his side in a forced show of leisure.

He turns, then, mindful of the inches the antlers on his mask give him. He’s almost Lars’ height. Almost.

“You’re arriving a little late, aren’t you? For one of the region’s top 10 public figures. And bachelors, if the gossip magazines are to be believed.”

Lars’ tie is slightly crooked. Fox reaches out to straighten it before he can stop himself.

Look, he’d come from a harried trip back home at Verdanturf, thrown on the nicest (and most presentable) suit he had before making a mad dash to a nearby costume shop at Mauville (which luckily still had a few masks for sale remaining) and had to hightail it here as fast as possible…

“…but seeing as everyone else has turned up, I’m here mostly for the free food. And the booze, if it’s passable enough.”

Of course he forgot to fix his neck tie. Of course he did.

What really caught him off-guard was the fact that Foxy here of all people had noticed it and fixed it for him.

“I prefer to keep my shit low-key, if you catch my drift.”

“Oh?” he asks, syllable woven with curiosity, though his face remains artfully blank. His knuckles graze ever so slightly against the silk of Lars’ lapels as he drops his hands to a more appropriate stillness. “Why ever not?”

The crassness of the Head Ranger’s speech makes his mouth turn up, despite himself.

“I suppose, after a certain level, public figures shouldn’t be quite so public.” Though it was still surprising that Lars seemed so down to earth.

Fox had a hunch it was all an act, however.

He realizes he’s closed the distance between them unintentionally, so he steps back and turns away.

“Ever the approachable policeman,” he said, and his words contained the tiniest bit of a sneer.

This, coming from someone whose maternal family was known to be part of the upper echelons of wealth back in Alto Mare—yet his nonnas and nonnos insisted that they live a simple life and not to think too much of material wealth. Such a disparity, wouldn’t you think so?

“Could’ve used the funds to pay for the venue, for the entertainment, for… for everything… and redirect it to where it’s really needed,” he continued quietly, crossing his arms a bit as he looked around and saw that he wasn’t the only one coming in late—there were also some surprise last-minute stragglers who wanted to crash in and make off with the promise of free food at the very least.

At the mention of ‘policeman’, he cringed for a few moments.

“I’m not a policeman in that sense of the word,” he added in that same hushed tone.

There’s this unreadable smirk on his face as he decided to follow the other man to where the revelry is taking place.

“That may be true, but when the Ducklet evolves, it’s no longer a Ducklett but a Swanna—and that’s something completely different altogether,” he hummed quietly, a brief cackle escaping him.

“You may say that now, but eventually you’ll see that not everything’s in black and white alone,” he followed up as he kept up with the other man’s pace.

“You get used to it after a while.”

They draw closer to the noise of the revelry. Lars falls in step beside him, much to Fox’s chagrin.

“It’s an evolved Ducklett,” Fox says, impetuous, “and ever an apt metaphor. A Ranger is just an evolved policeman.” And he smiles at Lars, genuinely, for the first time, because the Head Ranger has just proven his own point.

Fox ticks it down in the win column for himself.

“On the contrary, I see everything in shades of gray. But authority lies where authority lies. Black, white, red, chartreuse… it is not dependant on color.”

Though Lars’ tone does tint a bit blue with his last sentence. Fox regards him with a tip of his golden antlers.

“Are you? Used to it?” he asks, gesturing at the crowd they’re coming ever closer to. “The ostracism? The pedestals? The responsibility?”

His voice goes cold once more. “It’s an awful big noose to fit through.”

This is where he fell silent, looking over at him through his own Lucario-themed mask.

“Try supporting an entire family—and I don’t mean the nuclear family kind—on your shoulders. It gets tiring after a while.”

That was as close of a metaphor as he was going to get because the Rangers had become his family over the years. At the mention of nooses, though?

A brief cackle of laughter escaped him.

“I wouldn’t call it a noose, per se.”

Maybe that was what he was missing—a certain kind of empathy around other people? This was going to be something else to unwind and carefully detangle, considering the conditions right now.

What were words, Lars. Why was something so familiar to you extremely difficult to explain to someone else? Especially when that someone else had a devil-may-care outlook on the world?

He had to resist the urge to blow a raspberry at the mention of becoming a poet.

“Fun fact—I almost did, all those years ago. Back in my mother’s home region where I lived for some time, it almost happened.”

That was just about as much as he was going to let slip that he was, indeed, something of an artist but with words cobbled and stitched together before being put to song—

Okay, that’s deep lore for another time!
