it had started small, barely noticeable, at the entrance to the rift.

and as electricity around them bites at their skin, it merely festers into an agitated, infected wound.

"can you watch the back?"

she knows, realistically, he doesn't need to be asked such a thing but she feels it come out anyway like word vomit.

"i want to get a closer look at these power stations..."

even with him hovering close enough to keep her safe and secure, she still feels exposed. a sitting duck, ready to be shot.

one of her golurks has taken up residence next to felix while another sticks closer to her body. additional layers of protection provide a false sense of security for the scientist to wander forward, inching closer and closer to the power stations. they beckon her, lifeless and begging for revival.

There was no world in existence where he'd allow anything or anyone to hurt Illeana. It was an unspoken pledge he bled with every breath, step, and second, he spent in her orbit. Her question was ultimately unnecessary, as he'd already positioned himself near their blindside, his gallade released with the direct purpose of tailing the scientist as she explored the inners of the dilapidated building.

Whether it be here or there, he'd be ready to take arms.

"Let me know if you see anything," he called back to her, eyes never leaving the back entrance. For a mercenary born from brute and blood, this world of mystery was far beyond anything he'd ever laid witness to. It was daunting in a way that forced the hairs on the back of his neck to stand.

with felix positioned at the entrance, his gallade and her golurk on each side, there’s a slight increase in comfort. it tries to persist as long as possible.

and as she releases a rotom from the confines of its pokeball, she kneels on the ground in front of the power supply. here, she can see everything: lifeless wires, circuitboards overflowing with dust, broken parts left as husks of a former glory.

”woah.”

something about it screams extraterrestrial, alien, foreign. she’s never seen anything like it.

her rotom buzzes beside her, excited and curious.

”can you get in there and see what you find?”

it’d, perhaps, be easier if she had a porygon here too. unfortunately, she has yet to find a porygon-z so her rotoms will have to do.

Almost as if he read her very thoughts, Felix tossed a sole pokeball over his shoulder, sending out a porygon-z to aid with illeana's efforts. The small normal type flickered and twitched with an alien buzz, wide yellow eyes bright with knowledge.

"Thought he could help."

More than he could.

"What do you see?"

”you’re the best.”

it’s soft, affectionate, and doesn’t quite have a place here right now.

she leans a little closer into the lifeless power station, eyes scanning.

at her shoulder, her rotom buzzes once before it begins to merge itself into the circuitry.

”lots of wires, old circuit boards, dust, and some broken parts. i’m trying to see if my rotom can get anything working…”

after a moment, her voice rises again.

”hey, porygon-z, could you scan for any anomalies in this thing as rotom merges into it?”

Her bright relief felt like warmth kissing his skin. He was glad he could be of any use, even in situations like this.

All the while, his Porygon-z worked as instructed, sputtering out a slow-moving green wave of an electronic scan. It started at the west-most point of the circuitry before inching its way across, beeping whenever an anomaly was spotted. It beeped 5 times in total.

When the can was finished, the electronic piece of Alienware zapped and disfigured itself again, until a new screen emerged from its wake detailing the data tied to its reporting.

she skims the report once, twice, and finally lets out a little gasp.

"interesting."

while her rotom infiltrates the machinery, she begins to reach for wires and parts.

"the readings almost make it seem like the wiring is of an organic makeup."

as if it's not machinery but veins and sinew in a body...

worrying, perhaps.

"can you give it a charge, rotom?"

the ghost chitters from somewhere within the power station and electricity buzzes after a moment. it zaps her hands, causing wires to drop as she lets out a soft yelp. the power station still seems lifeless upon first glance, however...

Interest drew Felix's eyes back onto her. Bidding his gallade one quick passing whisper, the admin withdrew himself back to her side, peering over her shoulders to garner a better look at the inner circuitry. The words detailed across the monitor was too complex for him to comprehend within the passing glances he gave it, but Illeana's words did enough to fill in the gaps.

"Organic?"

He repeated out the word for himself to understand. Still, he kept quiet, the hum of static and buzz of the electronic pokemon fulfilling their due diligence in examining the hardware.

What would they come to find, he wondered.

she’s never seen anything like it…

her rotom has fully submerged itself into the power station by now, buzzing happily as it explores

”rotom, higher charge please… shock it.”

her eyes drift to felix’s and then past him to his porygon-z.

”prep a scan. begin when rotom shocks the system, please.”

The porygon-z does as instructed, beeping frantically throughout the process. Beams of blue spit out, bathing the system of circuitry in its light, until every piece of its hardware was properly coated.

"Were they trying to create life?"

Memories of another sci-fi show bled through Felix's mind. Back then, he thought it was just a figment of the director's imagination. Never would he have thought it to be possible.

"no, i don't think so..."

she remembers, briefly, the hulking bodies of electrical wires they passed as they made their way here. the unnatural look to them, the sense of barely pulsing life simmering in cold wires.

"seems more like they had taken life to power this thing."

and how would they recreate such a thing now?

her rotom tries its best but nothing seems to work... each part is still broken, dead.

This was definitely beyond him. Still, he wanted to be supportive - this was for her research, not his.

"What do you think it means?"

He thought, at the very least, maybe his questions could draw out some information. Maybe something of use to what he cared about, in regard to the machinery.

her eyes dart to his for a moment before retreating back to wiring.

there, she traces them over and over until they all blur together into one dead heap.

"they could've taken these wires from those and made this a living machine."

but there's no way to know.

unless...

an awful, downright terrible idea rises and she gets to her feet with it. her eyes travel to the entrance, to what lies beyond. those bodies are still out there.

she tries to take a few quick steps toward the exit.

Careful eyes watch the ripple of change contort and shape her expression. When Illeana set to move, it wasn't with pleasure, but what looked to be conflict.

Reaching for her wrist, he shackled her back down to reality, words so heavy they could act as weights.

"Where are you going?"

The question was one of worry than judgment. Furrowed eyebrows search the path she would've taken - back to the exit, where the bodies still lay, decomposed and morbid.

"What are you trying to do?"
