2023 had been a blur for Isaac. The fallout from the Meteno incident, the mad scramble to investigate Ultra Space, the region's sudden and paralyzing obsession with their phones. Something was always happening, and it was too easy to get swept up and lose track of it all.[break][break]

Yet Isaac refused to spend it on idle hands. He trained his team, developing their capabilities, expanding their ranks, and even taking his first steps towards the gym challenge. He trained his body and mind, because he couldn't rely on his team alone to protect those important to him. More important still, he trained his vision. Therapeutic exercise. Drills and practice. Slow, consistent attempts at bringing normalcy back to his life. The guidance he had from Julia Davis and Eris Halla was invaluable, their own experiences helping guide his along more smoothly.[break][break]

By the four month mark, the impossible was starting to look possible, so long as he put in a little elbow grease. That meant Isaac could finally act on a long held promise.[break][break]

As promised, Isaac and Goatercycle were waiting by Verdanturf City. The crisp, fresh air and rolling countrysides made it a perfect place for practice. However, they were far from the only ones. Silph Cup champion Buffaloman and the ever-stubborn Rampage jostled and roughhoused with one another, an irritated Charles trying to keep them apart from one another with a glowing horn. Off to the side, Ceres' Overgrowth was accelerating the ripening of several local grasses and berries, Kilimanjaro sampling their terroir in cautious, probing bites.[break][break]

A Gogoat, a Tauros, a Rhyhorn, a Galarian Rapidash, a Torterra, and a Camerupt. Isaac never expected to have an entire fleet of rides, and these were just the ones by land! It was nice to finally have the chance to leverage them. Now he just needed to wait for Asher to arrive . . .

The day has come! When Isaac finally does good on his promise to teach him how to ride, and maybe let him give taming his Rapidash a ghost of a chance. It took a bit of time for the man to get used to his depth perception, but here he was, with a full team of riding Pokemon. All Ash brought was Silky the Larvesta, Bowy the Cyndaquil, Simba the Litleo, Teddy the Stufful, Kraken the Magikarp, and Chompers the Gabite. When he arrived with his conglomerate of babies and two responsible teenagers, the red head was in slight disbelief. Gogoat, okay, that seeemed easy enough. Tauros? Rhyhorn? Camerupt?!

That last one worried him. Just how many clothes is he going to go through just sitting on the damn thing?! Well okay then. With a big wave at Isaac, Asher announced his arrival! "Hiiiiii Isaaaaaac! I'm here!" With a big grin, he bounded on up to the man. Somehow, all four of the babies had pompoms and were waving them around as if to cheer him on in learning how to ride a Pokemon. Kraken...was Kraken. Chombers was blinking bewilderly at the entire scene and was wondering if his trainer was insane or stupid. Or both. Definitely both.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Asher had come with his own personal hype squad. Good. The mere sight of the excitable little guys got a grin spreading across Isaac's face. "Good to see ya, Ash," Isaac said, offering him a fistbump as he came bounding up.[break][break]

Isaac's Pokemon, too, were quick to join the greeting. The excitable Rampage came first, speeding up to see what this new kid was all about. Luckily, she skidded to a halt before bowling the poor guy over, dust and dirt being kicked up in her wake. Not far behind, despite her slow speed, was Ceres. The Torterra knelt down upon approaching Asher, offering him a pick of fruit from her branches.[break][break]

Goatercycle, Charles, and Buffaloman regarded the boy more casually, nods and sounds of acknowledgment as he approached. Only Kilimanjaro seemed more interested in grazing than greeting, though even he shot a brief glance Asher's way as the boy arrived. It was an eclectic batch of Pokemon; many different attitudes, body types, and abilities, all among the same handful of quadrupeds. With this small selection having this much variety, just how much did Isaac's team as a whole contain?[break][break]

"Sorry it took me so long to get my act in gear. But, hey. If I can take Elisabeth Fiorelli to driving school, teaching you how to ride is gonna be a snap," Isaac said. Asher was a quick learner, he was a far better teacher than he ever expected, and he had a big variety on hand to help Asher find his style. Isaac was confident, to say the least. "Any luck reaching your Rapidash since we last met?"

The Pokemon Coordinator returned the fist bump. Then Isaac's crew made their greetings. Mostly. But the first one did leave a big impression. Ash was about to dive out of the way when it came to a sliding halt. The Torterra was a sweetie though, offering some fruit. He took an apple. The Camerupt just looked at him, then continued grazing, while the others were much more relaxed. "Well, we'll see." With a bite into the apple, he listened to the question. "I made her stare me down. But that was all. I think it did pique her curiosity though...she'd been more looking than being a pain since then." He wondered if she viewed him as a challenger now.

He continued to munch on the apple as he looked the choices to learn the art of Pokemon riding. "So, which one do you want me to try first?" The Gogoat seemed like they would be the easiest, followed by the Tauros. Since he would actually have something to hang onto. Camerupt he would consider too...if they weren't hot. And honestly, he didn't want his clothes burned off and have to burrow something from Isaac to preserve some form of modesty. That was an interesting choice. But maybe it was well trained? Or at least has some good control over its flames...

"One of your big problems was that she didn't even acknowledge you, right? Now she has. And that's Step 1 before you can even get to respect."[break][break]

That was the preamble settled. Now it was time for the meat of the lesson; actually figuring out how to ride. "Goatercycle's your best bet, if you ask me," Isaac said, Goatercycle raising head and smirking with pride. "I'm pretty sure being ridden's in a Gogoat's genes. She's got a nice, even temper, and she's gonna have the best mix of speed and control out of everyone here. But that's both a blessing and a curse; she'll set the bar high for you."[break][break]

"If the idea of even going fast is too much for you, Ceres might be a good pick. She's far from speedy, but she's so stable that she helped me move an injured person from town to town without aggravating his break a bit. She's also got a heart of gold, so she'll be very patient with you as you learn."[break][break]

"Charles is the closest you've got to your Rapidash, though he's from another branch of the family tree. He might seem like a grump, but trust me. Long as you don't give him any crud, he'll treat you well. Since we're trying to get you on the same page as your Rapidash, I'd say you should test what you've learned with him when we're almost done."[break][break]

"Buffaloman's got a proud streak a mile long, and since that meteor mutated him it's only gotten worse. Pick him and he's in charge, and you're just along for the ride. But he's a no-shit racing champ, so you'll have a hell of an experience to take notes from. Just get ready for some killer speeds, and maybe for things to get a little wet and wild."[break][break]

"And I mostly just brought Kilimanjaro and Rampage out for some fresh air and to join the fun." Rampage let out an offended roar. "Oi, oi, don't look at me like that. You run like the wind and your plates are as hard as a rock. I swear, even with your saddle, I damn near bust my ass every time I ride you."[break][break]

"No, no, no. You two have a way more important role. You're the competition." At this, Rampage practically lit up, while Kilimanjaro continued chewing his cud. "Kilimanjaro's the slow bar to clear, Rampage is the fast one. And don't worry, they're not gonna be pulling any funny business on you."[break][break]

"So! Where's your head at?"

Was it? It didn't really seem like it. Maybe she saw the wheels that turned in his brain, but who knew what she was seeing. But whatever. Isaac gave him a summary, though it was also hard to keep track of which nickname belonged to which Pokemon. After the summary...Goatercycle it was. "I'll go with Goatercycle then I guess." After finishing his apple, he threw the core at some distant location. Chompers actually ate the rest of it with one gulp. Ash walked over to go the Gogoat and crawled on. Isaac wasn't kidding, everything just seemed right. Now it was the course. Assuming they had a route planned. "I guess lets start with a small jaunt...then when I'm more used to it, give me all you got."

And he asked for it. The jaunt was nice and even, if bouncy. But nothing he couldn't handle. It didn't take long for him to get used to it. Then came the jolt of speed when Ash said that he was good to go. And boy did Goatercycle did give him everything it got! But Ash held on. If nothing else, he was tenacious. But he controlled where they went easily enough. If this was balanced, he half wondered what speed would do! Rapidash were not slow Pokemon. And his would be bucking as well. Again though, the Gogoat was easy to get used to just by virtue of everything coming together quite nicely. It really did seem like the Pokemon was bred for riding!

[attr="class","skullbody"]Goatercycle truly was the easiest of options. Their grassy hide was like a natural saddle. Their stout legs and sturdy bodies could handle both bumpy terrain and quick, direct sprints alike. Their horns curved back like a motorcycle's handlebars, giving Asher something easy to grab and hold onto. They even had a latent empath-style connection that allowed them to pick up on their rider's state of mind and make adjustments on their riding technique based on how they felt.[break][break]

It was perfect. However, it was almost too perfect. It also broke some of the rules of conventional riding wisdom. Keeping pace astride Goatercycle on Rampage's back, he surveyed Asher's form. "Gogoats are nice because you don't need reins," he pointed out, holding up his own for emphasis. "Their horns do the trick for you. And because they can pick up when you want to go faster or slower themselves, you don't need to do much with your legs, either. It means you're steering them more like a bike than a horse."[break][break]

"You're still getting a sense of what it's like to move with another living creature, though. You're putting your wills together and using them to move as one. And that's the part that's more important to master than any technical specifics."[break][break]

Okay. So the technical specifics mattered a lot, too. But they'd get there when they get there![break][break]

"But now that you've got that know-how, let's see you put it to the rest." Isaac pointed over to a spot on the horizon, where he'd set up a pair of flags. "You and me, straight down this trail. First one to pass through wins, alright? Ready . . . and . . . go!"[break][break]

Rampage would start . . . walking? Wasn't she supposed to be the fast one? What gives? In fact, if Asher even tried moving forward, he'd quickly have a sizeable lead over Rampage.[break][break]

If only he knew that a Rhyhorn's speed came not from any particular agility, but from cold, hard momentum. Soon, the steps would grow faster and more frequent. The earth would start to churn beneath Rampage's feet. The Rhyhorn would come barreling down the mountain pass, shooting forward like a meteor hellbent on clearing through the finish line. All the while, Isaac would be holding on for dear life, whooping and cheering from the thrill.[break][break]

Could Asher out-ride Rampage's . . . well, rampage?

Isaac wasn't kidding about the horns. It was all just so natural. He'd ridden a bike, albiet "borrowed" to get away before, but his success was limited because of balance. But with four legs, Ash didn't need to worry about it. After going towards Isaac, and he continued to speak. Looking over, the red head saw the flag. The pass? Seemed easy enough. From the word go, Ash and Gogoat was off.

It started off with him winning by a landslide. Only for the red head to hear whooping and cheering from behind him. And quickly catching up. Eyes widening, he turned back forward and tried to get Gogoat to go faster. Only to panick and veer off to get out of the way of the Rhyhorn, and Isaac and Rampage zooming on past with tons of dust. Coughing so hard, he had to stop, and Goatercycle seemed to have agreed, slowing to a stop. Once the dust settled around them, the sweatdropped teenager just jogged over to the flag, clearly defeated. "Okay, so some Pokemon get faster due to momentum...a Rapidash isn't quite like that. They're known to be fast already. And this one is likely going to be bucking already..."

Knowing how to ride helps for after the fact, but learning to get respect from said massive drama queen mean girl was another story. He couldn't help but think that a Rapidash was going to be similar to the Gogoat, but with reins instead of horns.

Rhyhorn race betting was like watching a bunch of rocks tumbling down a hill and seeing which landed first. There was something so thrilling about seeing how much was left up to chance.[break][break]

Still, Rampage's . . . well, rampage left poor Asher in a heck of a peelout. "You all good over there?" he asked, Goatercycle's horns pulsing in the pattern of nice, rhythmic breaths. "If your Rapidash is feeling like a brat, she might kick up a bunch of dust and make a fuss. But luckily, nothing's gonna match the exhaust a Rhyhorn kicks up."[break][break]

"So it sounds like the next training you're after's dealing with a Pokemon bucking you, right?" He whistled, and who else would trot up but Buffaloman? The Silph Cup champion came trotting up, looking over Isaac and Asher curiously. Already, the tension of a challenge raised started to crackle through the air.[break][break]

"Good news. The water breed have some of the thickest, most luxurious manes in Paldea. If the reins slip, you should have no problem grabbing on to catch yourself." A small, devilish smirk spread across his face. "The better news is that, if you can put up with Buffaloman's thrashing, some bucking horse is gonna be no problem for you."[break][break]

"Ceres! Overgrow some nice, soft grass for me, will you? We're gonna need a hell of a landing pad." The Torterra nodded, her body starting to pulse a gentle green. The grasses and flowers surrounding the group began to bloom into a thick, dense carpet, leaving only a small, enclosed area for Buffaloman to thrash around within.[break][break]

"I'll go grab you a helmet and some pads real quick. Let me know if you've got any other questions before we get started, alright?"

"Yeah...just never expected that." About like how no one expects his Magikarp to know Hydro Pump. It was good know that there wasn't much that could kick up a dust storm like a Rhyhorn. Though he also kind of doubted Frou-Frou would try that, but admittedly, he didn't know that for sure. The wierd Tauros came trotting up. It was called the water breed, originally from Paldea. Huh...wierd. Though again, Bones was a good example of a regional variant. The Torterra glowed and made a cushion for him to land on.

This was more what he was talking about! He was doing that weird hopping but not quite movement as he waited for the helmet. When he did and strapped it on, Ash ran over and jumped and climbed on the odd looking black Tauros. And when the big guy got started, holy yikes! In no time flat, Asher landed hard on the cushioned grass with a loud thud. The boy just jumped up and tried again. This second time, Ash held on much longer, for seven and a half minutes. His landing was louder on that one for no reason whatsoever.

If anything, Asher was tough and persistant. He can take falling down. A lot of falling downs. And he was falling down with loud thuds a lot. His little cheer team took a long time to get there, but after over two hours, Ash declared something. "I need a break. I think you need a break too. And you, Isaac." He gave Tauros gentle head pats and went off to sit under a tree, resting his tired bones and muscles. That was...exhausting, really. Silky, Bowy, Teddy, and Simba all wanted to climb on the Torterra, and each took turns asking if they could hop on. If nothing else, they were polite. And cute. Chompers had laughed at Ash for trying this. Kraken was napping in the shade.

[attr="class","skullbody"]About every half hour, Isaac checked in. Every half hour, Asher refused. For a kid, he was as tough as they came. Isaac felt pride swelling in his chest with each time Asher got up from his fall, with each time he held on for longer than the last ride, with each time he defiantly stared down one of Isaac's strongest.[break][break]

It was almost surprising to Isaac when Asher finally said he needed a break. "Sheesh, at this point I thought you'd be at it all night," Isaac admitted. Nevertheless, he obliged, whistling for Buffaloman to return to his side. The Tauros returned to his side, only now letting a little bit of his own fatigue show.[break][break]

"Rest up, Ash," he said to Asher, fishing around in his travel pack to go digging for some food. He'd bring a bottle of water, some homemade sandwiches, an apple and a tin of mixed nuts over to the stubborn kid . . . as well as a piece of a brookie, as a treat. "You earned it."[break][break]

As they rested up and ate, Ceres knelt down for Ash's cheer squad. They didn't need to go one at a time. The Torterra was practically a walking forest! She was able to give them all a ride on her back at once, her tree gently shaking as the Pokemon played around on her back. Rampage and Buffaloman, still worked up from their training, raced around with one another. Charles trotted over to heal any bruises and scrapes from the falls, then trotted over to Goatercycle. The two seemed to be communicating, though about what was unclear.[break][break]

"So! How're you feeling so far?" Isaac asked, hoping that Asher's confidence would be boosted as much as his ability was.

"I still might be. I still could. Don't mean a break wouldn't be uncalled for now and then." Getting knocked off may be fun and all, but everyone needs some rest from doing things. Thanking Isaac for the food, he dug in. In the past, all of the food would have been gone in a heartbeat. Now that he had a stable place to sleep and a consistant supply of food...he didn't go hungry. While he still had an appetite, he didn't just obiterate his meals anymore. So the teenager just watched his babies climb aboard the Torterra and play on his back. Kracken snored surprisingly loud while Chompers went to the cliff face and started practicing his Dragon Claw attack, leaving gashes in the rock.

Ash didn't even notice the other Pokemon coming and healing his bruises and scrapes. The boy looked up at Isaac at the question, then his amber gaze rested back on Buffaloman. "Frou-Frou is bigger. So I think more practice is warranted. I want to grab that horn of her's and make her stare me right in the eyes as I tell her I can help show off her power, beauty, speed, whatever she wants to do. But she will listen to me." His conviction was stronger than before. Finishing up his food, he got up, stretching and loosening up his muscles again. "You ready Buffaloman?" He was ready to go another few hours. Hopefully the Tauros was as well...

He had faith in Asher. So much faith, in fact, that when he started walking back towards Buffaloman, Isaac didn't even bat an eye. He gave him a brief once-over, making sure he could at least put one leg in front of the other without wobbling, and then motioned for his mentee to proceed.[break][break]

When asked if he was ready, Buffaloman snorted triumphantly. He then knelt down, giving Asher the chance to climb onto his back and get ready for Round 2.[break][break]

And Round 2 it was! The Tauros would stomp, buck, and leap even moreso than before, putting Asher's grip and endurance to the test as much as possible. He wasn't heartless; he kept his rampage to the grass square that Ceres had set up for their training. However, Asher had proven himself once already, and that meant he wasn't getting handled with kid gloves today.[break][break]

So much so, in fact, that Isaac could feel the Mega Brace on his wrist thrumming to life.[break][break]

Meteoric energy swirled through the lattice framework of the brace. Isaac could feel Buffaloman's urge to surge past his very limits, droplets of water already starting to gather around the blue streaks in his mane.[break][break]

"Nope," Isaac said, clenching his fist and forcing the power back down. "We're not doing this, Buffaloman."

Asher grinned, but expressed his doubt on that. "I don't know about that. Mythical and Legendary Pokemon I would expect to put even hard cases like Frou-Frou to shame." Big power and big egos was his logic. Still, a good celebration for when he was successful sounded like a good plan to him. Without even a hint of wobble, he got on and off they went! Maybe it was because of his own gusto, but the Paldean Tauros did not hold back. But try as he might, Asher held on. Though there was a couple of close calls. Ash was athletic, sure, but even adults would be having issues staying on.

Since he was busy holding onto for dear life, he didn't even notice anyting different. When Buffaloman finally got his grip loosened enough, he finally bucked the teenager off. Landing with a thud, Ash flipped back up and ran back towards the Tauros, hopping on immediately. This would happen for another three hours, again with Ash hanging on longer and longer each time. The boy seemed like he had boundless energy. And he sure bounced back pretty quickly after each fall. Helped that the grass pad was nice and big and fluffy, even with the Tauros thrashing around. The helmet and pads also helped greatly in letting him just bounce right back up.

Even his cheer team had taken notice. And Chompers, who had stopped slashing at walls and was watching in ah. Kracken was still snoring loudly.
