Maybe it was providence he’d missed what his friend was describing in detail, however fact of the matter remained…

“…so are there still a few pockets of space cannibals hiding here and there… specifically around this particular route?” he asked the blood-chilling question.

Because if there were, then the next question would be…

“…do you think I should tell my partner about it? He’s the Fortree Ranger captain, and all that.”

And then it begged the next question—

“…did the space cannibals have those freaky Pokémon-adjacent companions with them? You know…” he trailed off before wiggling his fingers like mind-controlling tentacles.

That fucking image of a tentacle stabbing someone’s neck before they were consumed from the inside out was something he wouldn’t easily forget from the Three-Day War…

"Absolutely. As Ranger Captain, he's in a position to help prepare the area, should they come around.", Thomas answered Alexei.

"Nihilego? Yes they did. Some of the group got abducted by the Megalopolans in an ambush. The mutated Ursaluna, after we made peace with them, lead us to where they took them. When we got there, those abducted members of the group were being restrained by Nihilego bearing a single, strange, magenta, chain-like tendril each.", he'd explain to Alexei.

Said tendril was a recurring image through the journey. Not only did the Nihilego have such tendrils, but Glimmora in the darkened cave had markings resembling them. The dead Megalopolan at the mixing bowl had one. The Megalopolans masquerading as prisoners the other group discovered, sprouted them. And those who got poisoned by either the Nihilego, or the other Pokemon that ambushed them, sprouted them.

Moment his friend confirmed that the tentacle hentai monsters were back, he pinched the bridge of his nose once again.

“Are you fucking kidding me,” he grumbled, punctuating each word with a change in intonation before closing his eyes and resisting the urge to scream, to rip his hair out, to just run around in circles like he’d lost his sanity.

“But see, that… that’s the thing,” he went on in the same quiet tone.

“If I tell him about this, he’s going to insist on handling everything by himself.”

Thomas knew that this wasn't going to be an easy topic to break to the Gym Leader. But it was one he felt was absolutely necessary.

"You want me to come with you? Something like this is going to need to be a collaborative effort. I don't know what would compel him to try to take this on alone, but I can tell you that he cannot do it alone. None of us can.", he'd tell Alexei.
