He never realized he’d feel like a wrung sponge before the day was over—just how many people were out here today?

Thank hell they were allowed to heal between rounds, so there was that.

So far, so good though?!

His Absol had never felt fresher. (Or prettier, for that matter.)

Why, he was fighting a medic still on his scrubs, of course!

"Hey! John Sullivan, pleasure!" The medic said cheerfully as he sauntered to his side of the battlefield, waving at the other before throwing his pokeball onto the field, releasing a scyther. "Let's have a fun one, yeah?"

They were both plain Janes, him and the other—with equally plain names, too! Perfect.

“Call me Jack, everyone does—and good luck to you!” he continued from his side of the battlefield.

All too soon the ringing noise that signified the start of the match went off; and the Absol got up and off from her position; eyeing the Scyther carefully and getting ready with a Swords Dance in case they came flying too close.

For it was clear this Pokémon she was facing—was a veteran of battle as much as she was.

"You too, Jack." Doug said with a nod, before swiping his arm across the air. "Kama— have fun!"

The battle started, and Kama gave the Absol perhaps exactly what it wished, launching forth to close the distance between herself and it in the blink of an eye.

Her scythe glimmered a neon green as she swung the flat of it towards the Absol's head.

The Scyther came screaming in, swinging their arm-scythes, however the Absol was fast enough to block the swing in time with her own head-horn, causing them to spring apart like a coil.

“Come on, Cordy! Let’s go!” he cheered from his side of the field, before the black-and-white Pokémon then charged forward; horn glowing with the attempt at a Night Slash incoming to either nick or catch the Scyther by surprise!

"Don't get impatient! Wait for an opening." He suggested to Kama, prompting a snort and a nod from the bug as she lowered her stance, planting her feet firmly as if preparing for a scrap.

As the enemy's attack came, she attempted yet another close shave maneuver, trying to duck under the swipe while swinging the back of her scythes upwards, trying to counter the blow!

The first strike—was not to be theirs, judging from how she’d recoiled this time around, simply because… ooh, that was going to hurt!

“This is why we don’t rush!” he exclaimed in the Absol’s direction.

“Clear your mind and let the rest come naturally. Like water against rock!”

Never mind if she’d been jarred somewhat, it was go-time—this time with a Psycho Cut attack to gauge the distance!

Doug's gaze sharpened, his hand sliding down his wrist to tap at his Z-band.

It was perhaps a bit overkill, this early into the fight— but sometimes it was best to strike while the iron was still hot. A good start could make up for a poor lower half.

"Break their focus!"

Kama's aura overflowed, pooling into her scythe as she reeled back before she unleashed her Heaven Cleaver, a bursting blast of cutting wind tearing towards her opponent!

“What the—”

He blinked, and the sudden—whoa, holy shit what was going on?!—environs went full lumens-burst like the world’s strongest flashlight decided to click on in the span of a few seconds and Cordy the Absol was sent flying, staggering almost outside the ring boundaries, but—

What was that?! he screamed in the back of his mind, worry all over his face as he decided—now was definitely the time to go bananas and try his own full-power attack.

Once he’d chucked the orb of light at his holding-on-by-a-thread Absol, the funniest bunch of balloons appeared overhead, before she came in barreling with one last Night Slash in a hope to turn the tables…!

The opponent's strategy had seemingly turned on a dime, going from patient to rushing forth.

Understandable, given the Z-move had landed wholly. But—

'Rushing and mistakes go hand in hand.' He thought as he swiped his arm across the air dramatically. "Counter it!"

But then, if one failed to seize upon the opponent's mistakes, one was the greater fool. Kama rushed in for what might well be her last risky move—!

What he thought was going to be the last round was… was actually not going to be the very last; all things considered.

“Come on, girl! This is where we can turn the situation around!” he cheered from his side of the field as the Absol skidded; gauging the incoming attack before this time lashing out with a surprise Sucker Punch aimed to either trip the Scyther off-guard, or it would definitely be her last move this round!

Well shit, now it was their turn on the backfoot.

Getting pushed back as her carapace steamed, Kama's eyes widened as her opponent came flying at her while she was still reeling.

"Counter it!" Doug ordered in a rush, biting his lip. Things were deteriorating for them. The choice to use his Z-move early was biting him in the cheeks now that they had failed to capitalize on their opponent's opening. They had to turn it around—!

It was hard to gauge from this distance if this was going to be a win or a loss, the way both their Pokémon were fighting hard…

She had to keep calm under duress, don’t panic don’t panic don’t panic—

Another failed counter; it seemed like their timing was getting worse and worse.

She's too tired for precision.

It came down to one last move, and it would have to be sheer brute force.

"Vacuum Wave!" He ordered sharply, waving his arm dramatically.

Gathering the last of her strength, the scyther's arms blurred as she attempted to summon walls of wind against the rushing Absol—!

And it was—

The loud dinging of the bell announced the winner—

“Wha?” he blinked in utter confusion, surely there was a mistake with the—but no—had the Scyther flown too close to the sun and got burned in the process—

“Good game, man!” he hollered over the people screaming nearby because damn that noise ticket was going to be very loud had this been for any other occasion asides from the tournament.

“Your Scyther did great! My Absol learned a lot from them!” he added before he’d gotten his Absol swept down and off the arena, and cleared out for the next match.
