The static in the air is mirrored under Blue’s skin as she waits for her next match to line up. The threat of a storm hangs in the sky in the form of dark, rumbly clouds. Waiting to break open like she threatens to break apart. On the cusp of it.[break][break]
It’s only the jangle of her nerves. The anxiety of being out in the open. Would THEO BECKETT disapprove of this? She can’t bring herself to care. And what does it matter? She spent months in the wake of that day out on Route 120 hiding from him and from the reach of Rocket, only for him to find her regardless.[break][break]
Blue can’t waste anymore of that time feeding into the fear he coaxed out of her. It’s a bitter taste in her mouth. The weight of stares from spectators and fellow tourney participants alike makes her skin prickle. So many eyes make her feel like a cagey, cornered dog.[break][break]
Her red-eyed stare hones in on her opponent– a pale-haired woman she should probably recognize for her standing, but doesn’t. She cuts an intimidating figure, but that is okay. If this is where Blue keeps her focus, and on the match itself, she will be fine.

the hour to the gym leader summit draws nearer and nearer. she has a small messenger bag at her hip, strap slung over body, and in it is the tablet containing notes she'd written during the better part of her downtime today. the vendor booth she'd rented for her book signing has a sign on her fold-out table - back soon - and one of the attendants from the draciary hands out pre-signed copies of dragonology.

somewhere in the brewing storm, a pesky legendary flits among gray clouds.

her opponent is unknown to her, which isn't unlikely, but all the rest of her match-ups have somehow been acquaintances or colleagues. the woman on the other end of the field doesn't say anything to her and freya's more than happy to toss aside niceties in the face of a clean, focused battle.

so lyune emerges in a flash of white and freya waits for her opponent's first move.

Blue watches as the salamence appears in a bright ray of light, and her eyes travel upward to its great, scaled head. Lips part, an expression of obvious awe washing over her features at the sheer grandiosity of the dragon. A low chuff from her mightyena brings her back into focus, and she blinks.[break][break]
For a brief moment, she had forgotten her anxieties at the sight.[break][break]
Bonnie, who had already been steadfastly glued to her side, steps forward—undaunted as she comes to crouch low in the shadow of the salamence. Her tail sweeps back and forth, lips peeling back to reveal sharp teeth.[break][break]
It is then that Blue activates the Tera orb in hand, and sets the canine on a crystallized trajectory toward poison terastalization. She lunges forward, a howl up at the salamence releasing a TOXIC spray.

dog pokemon have never much been in her purview. she has a narrow skillset, but she's a master of one if there ever was one. and part of dragon-taming is knowing the ins and outs of their adversaries - fairies and ice-types.

but pokemon like this? she has no idea the extent of their capabilities. which makes them dangerous. she at least has an edge on the terastalization - the first glimmering fractals, she's able to identify its typing and plan accordingly.

lyune's worked through all the viable transformations himself - over and over and over again so she could recognize them all with the bat of an eye.

her own tera orb sparkles and all the shards adorning lyune's scales glow in tandem. galaxies spin out over blue, turning his scales cobalt, and when he charges through the toxic cloud, his claws gleam with draconic starlight.

Another terastalized creature— Blue’s obvious awe and curiosity continues as the crystallization weaves itself over the salamence so beautifully. It sweeps over his scales and she stares at the way it glimmers like far off starlight.[break][break]

She’d thought Bonnie’s violet-sheened coat to be a lovely sight, but this was something else entirely. Her admiration remains muted, however. She doesn’t voice any praise for the creature as he swipes out with sharpened claws at her companion. They catch Bonnie in the shoulder and she yelps—then snarls in defiance at the massive beast.[break][break]

Blue is as unfamiliar with dragons as her opponent is to canines. But admittedly, this makes her curious. The raw power there—what is it like to harness it?[break][break]

She banks on her mightyena’s ardent loyalty, though. There are few things she can count on in her life, fraught with anxiety and paranoia as it has become. But her dogs are certainly one of those things.[break][break]

Despite the swipe, the mightyena hurls herself forward again, toxicity ramping up as she flings toward one of the salamence’s legs, POISON FANGS trying to burrow themselves in the slivered, soft gaps between sturdy scales.

stars can fall just like the rest of them. his bulk means little in the face of time and corrosion. the fangs shove their way through his weathered hide and sink into the flesh of his foreleg. rather than back away from the attack, he leans into it, bearing his chest down on the beast that dare get close to him.

his frills shake as draconic energy pulses through him, but rather than expel soulflame past his teeth, he summons a phantasmal vegetation to ensnare the mightyena.

Bonnie's teeth find unexpected purchase. Is is a grip the canine had not been anticipating, but one she makes use of all the same. Teeth bearing down to dig into sinew and muscle under the hardened exterior. She clings on for as long as she, head whipping side to side with jerking motion.[break][break]
As if playing with a stuffed toy.[break][break]

The salamence is, of course, no such thing - and far larger to boot. But rather than shake her loose, the crawl of viney plants wrest her away. She snarls and snaps at the plants, twisting to and fro to loosen herself from that unnatural grasp. And then leaps in again with battering paws to PLAY ROUGH as fairy light swims up and around her forelegs.

these loathsome fae keep finding him. lyune snorts in surprise and the briars bristle around him, frenzied plants bulking. irritation follows swiftly after and he shakes off the numbing foreleg, ignoring the clenching in his muscles. his teeth come down, ripping through ethereal leaves to tussle with the hound.

freya runs her tongue along her teeth and watches the trainer behind the match. silent and observant, absorbed in the dogfight just like she is.

Bonnie finds purchase and kicks and bats at the salamence with as much tenacity as she can manage for a creature a fraction of his size. She SUCKER PUNCHES at his belly, though the dragon’s tussling is much more ferocious. She’s no more than a gnat to bat away.[break][break]

Blue’s own attention darts away for a moment, finding that mirrored focus to be relieving before she lets her gaze resettle on her mightyena. It does well to settle her nerves, not having to awkwardly chitchat her way through.

fractal, shimmering lights drift across his scales. the essence of every type of pokemon lives inside him, a mishmash of colors, and his sides gleam green and pink where the mightyena slashes. a dragon likened to a chameleon, shifting and restructuring his endurances.

the punch to his gut wouldn't normally send him flying backward, but he uses the momentum from the blow, wings flaring out, to draw himself back so he can light up a shot.

a celestial blast scorches the roof of his mouth and zips towards his foe.

Blue’s lips part in a subtle gawk as her eyes turn upward to follow the ascent of the dragon. She’s never seen anything quite like this–the way his scales shimmer with an iridescence in a myriad of hues. Blinking, she whistles to draw Bonnie back, but she is much too delayed in doing so. And the mightyena cannot hold up in the wake of such a powerful blast.[break][break]
It hits her square, and the canine drops like a sack of bricks.[break][break]
A low, keening howl rumbles in her throat, and Blue recalls her companion to her rest–the mightyena disappearing in a beam of light. Ruby eyes lift to study the woman across from her, curious and reverent toward the one who guides the ferocity of the dragon between them.[break][break]
Suddenly, perhaps, she feels sheepish. But in acknowledgement of her defeat, Blue meets her eye with a solemn nod.
