Ameena sipped at her steaming earl grey tea as she waited for Kasper to arrive. The researcher was early as always to the training facility. Unlike some of the recent lessons she had hosted, this one was especially rewarding to her because she was going to push an agenda on Kasper to wield Ameena's favorite: psychic types. [break][break]

Gardevoir and her shared thoughts about what to go through specifically, but Ameena was unconcerned with the details. Kasper's team would not be able to overcome Gardevoir, which would demonstrate the superiority of psychics and their moveset. They were the most versatile type, as far as she was concerned. She wondered if her student had grown their team in the short period of time between their last meeting and now.

kasper was feeling a bit of deja-vu.

not with ameena training them in particular, but with being here. this time, though, they weren't as late as they had been previously, so that was...a win? probably?

on the other hand, though, they had just snatched up a few pokeballs so they wouldn't be dealing with the constant stress of trying to figure out which to bring along (and end up late anyway). whatever they had was just as much a mystery to kasper as they would be to ameena.

speaking of...they beamed at (one of) their teachers as they came through the doors of the training facility, already a tad bit more confident than what they had been before. "so what's the plan for today?"

The steam of her tea gave way to the image of Kasper as they entered. Thankfully, the youth got straight to business. Ameena didn't care for dilly-dallying. "You," she said as she put the tea down, "are going to defend against my Gardevoir. I do not care how you do it, but your goal is to avoid getting knocked down." She assessed Kasper openly, then turned to Gardevoir was a pleased smile. [break][break]

"Gar is going to attack you with a series of moves. Whatever you do or pokemon you bring, you must avoid her pushing you down. Easy, right? We are testing your ability to protect, defend, evade - what have you." Assault or infiltration were too emphasized in the organization, and they were easier skills to develop than that of defense. And defense would be necessary in the coming war.

holy shit. okay.

when kasper had been asked to train, they hadn't been expecting to defend themself against a pokemon. much less a psychic type. it probably would have come up sooner rather than later, but it's still unexpected enough to give them the slightest bit of pause- and only partially to try to figure out a good plan.

at least, if nothing else, they had two pokemon with them. "alright." they hope their hesitation and lack of (mental) preparation isn't obvious enough as they reach for a pokeball- and then pause, hand lingering over the button to release the togekiss. "i hope you don't care that i brought two pokemon?"

it was rocket, right? kasper felt like fighting entirely fair would be off the agenda, considering how things were going. one button is pressed and, should ameena give them the go-ahead, they'd release the archeops they had brought with them just as quickly.

maybe, if they were lucky, they could figure out how to hold out well enough- togekiss on the offensive, and archeops to protect them. to try to switch things up.

Ameena smiled, but she didn't grace the question with an answer. She liked that Cherry was thinking about fairness or perhaps about the criteria for succeeding, but she preferred to show rather than tell. [break][break]

Gardevoir mega evolved. [break][break]

Then, she teleported behind the Archeops -- protect only works in one direction, after all -- and strikes Archeops with an alluring voice to push the bird away. Graciously, Gardevoir doesn't try to topple Cherry over, not yet, and instead spews mystical fire at the Togekiss. Having two pokemon is great for versatility, but strategy is still a requisite for survival.

even though they don't get an answer, kasper's hand lingers on the pokeball to release the togekiss. it's only as gardevoir mega evolves that they release the second pokemon, figuring that, yeah, two would absolutely be better than one in this scenario.

the gardevoir teleports faster than kasper can come up with a solid game plan, pushing posie away with an alluring voice and redirecting its attention to the togekiss. despite wisteria's attempts to dodge, kasper can see the way the mystical fire singes the white feathers on her wings. to the togekiss' credit, though, she bounces back easily, aiming to land a sweet kiss on the gardevoir.

a flash of sapphire moves out of the corner of kasper's eye as posie takes position closer to his trainer again as the second line of defense, waiting. for now.

The sweet kiss is unexpected but brilliant - Gardevoir won't be outdone by force alone, but inhibiting her is a great strategy to prevent her from wielding all of her power. It certainly does confuse Gardevoir, but she's also no stranger to fighting in unfavorable conditions. She's seeing double because of the status, but that doesn't mean she can't launch a wider attack. [break][break]

She launches a wide psychic at all three of them to push - aiming to achieve her goal of knocking Kasper down quickly. [break][break]

"You need a strong base to avoid getting pushed over," Ameena calls from the sidelines, picking up her tea again for another sip. All things considered, the kid is willing to adapt. Maybe they'll need to consider broad defenses like light screen or even a defense use of imprison, but Ameena trusts they'll pick a defensive style that works for them when this is over.

the move alone lands, and kasper can't help but feel a bit of short-lived pride at the idea. they're not the most skilled trainer, after all, and they're sure that ameena is more used to this than they are. by a long shot.

the psychic hits with a vengeance. maybe it's kasper's own pride that leaves them open to it, or maybe it's the fact that it can't really be avoided, but they wince. and they stagger- it takes a blind hand, grasping at the togekiss, to keep them upright, and even that barely works. but they're still standing, for now.
[break][break]
a strong base....both of the pokemon they've brought with them don't quite fit the bill here, they're sure, but they're determined to hang on for a little bit longer. and so, it seemed, was posie- the archeops lashes out with an almost instinctual dragon claw, sacrificing kasper's split-second plan in the process.

It's not the overwhelming display of strategy one could have hoped for, but Kasper has good bones as an operative - a team they can trust, quick reactivity, and the obedience of following instructions despite any feelings of unpreparedness. Ameena didn't expect Kasper to hold up even a second against her Gardevoir, but she likes what she sees. Archeops strikes back at Gardevoir who hisses at the jagged sensation of claws in her arm, and Ameena calls it there. [break][break]

"That is enough."[break][break]

But Gardevoir's too prideful to let a twerp pokemon land a strike like that, and she prepares a giant mystical fire to bring down on Kasper and their pokemon alike -- [break][break]

Ameena's quick on the draw with her pokeball, returning Gardevoir. [break][break]

She takes a breath, pretends this was intentional instead of another episode of Gardevoir doing as she wished. She clears her throat. "Faced against a powerful single pokemon, what might you do next time to defend yourself?"
