alina has never been one for the spotlight. she stays in the sidelines, happy to be the dark night sky to someone's shining star. besides unwanted attention, however, one of the other things that she's equally terrible with is turning others down. [break][break] especially when they're pulling the whole puppy-eye act. [break][break]

the pink-haired girl with her agrees to his request, and alina feels herself caving in as well. "okay, bu-" she began, but the coordinator was too excited to let her finish. "oh, perfect, thank you guys soooo much! you guys don't know how grateful we are." he gushes, practically prancing off his feet. he gestures for the two girls to follow him, and begins weaving his way out of the crowd towards backstage. [break][break]

alina closes her mouth, fiddling with one of her pokeballs. but my totodile isn't all that trained. [break][break]

there wasn't much she could do now besides accept her fate. wordlessly, she trails after the coordinator, wondering what she got herself into. depending on how her totodile was feeling today, well. they would either save the day or make news for the worst show ever. [break][break]

he opens a door, ushering them into a lively room adorned with changing stations and racks of mermaid attire. the energy in this room was no less chaotic, both coordinators and pokemon frantically getting finishing touches for their big moment. [break][break]

"wow. you ever done anything like this before?" alina says, gaze shifting from the commotion to the woman besides her.

a light dusting of glitter filled the air backstage as everyone finished dolling up their pokemon. she stifled a sneeze but surrendered to a cough-laugh at alina's question.

she was out of her comfort zone, but she didn't want to disappoint any little rangers. she wrapped a silk silver scarf around arctovish and tied it into a bow.[break][break]

"sorry i got you sucked into this, too. i'm keiko. oh, but if things go well, then, y'know, you're welcome."[break][break]

she smiled at alina with growing confidence. she wasn't one to drop the ball, and she certainly wasn't going to start now. she'd give it her all.[break][break]

At least they were in the same boat, she supposed. Alina fights off a sigh of relief. It was comforting knowing that they weren’t going to be the only uncoordinated Ducklett in a room full of graceful Swannas. [break][break]

“Frankly, my bar for ‘well’ is on the floor. I’m just praying that we don’t ruin the whole show for these poor coordinators.” The ranger lightly waves her hand at her totodile, concealing her nerves with a good-natured laugh. “Ronan’s not exactly….cooperative.” There was ten other words she’d use to describe him, but this one was the one least likely to get her reported to pokemon control. [break][break]

Speak of the devil. As Alina spoke, she reached for a sleek red scarf to tie around the reptile's neck. He immediately ducks out of her vicinity, knocking over spools of ribbon carelessly. They clatter noisily, streams of multi-colored silk flowing across the vinyl floor. She grimaces. She'll have to apologize for the mess later.[break][break]

“I'm Alina. And it's alright, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, really.” She says, attempting to tie the accessory around Ronan again. When he bats a claw in protest, she mutters rushed promises of berries in exchange for his cooperation. He deflates at the bribery, but doesn’t bother hiding the scowl plastered stubbornly across his features. [break][break]

She straightens after a minute, admiring her handiwork. The totodile whips his tail agitatedly in response before turning to sniff at the arctovish curiously. [break][break]

“Today is my first visit to this aquarium, actually." Alina says with a laugh, shaking her head. "I haven't seen a quarter of this building, let alone a show. I have no clue how these performances work."

alina's diplomacy in describing her totodile is admirable. keiko can appreciate the way the other trainer seems to cringe at ronan's brief reign of terror in the silk supplies. and then they're called up to the stage.

"well, so long as ronan doesn't get you kicked out, i think you'll love the aquarium. i can't speak for the normal expectations for performances, but i think our pokemon just need to dazzle a couple of kids... shouldn't be too bad, right?"

[break][break]

she says it good-naturedly, and she hopes she isn't fostering more anxiety in alina. the two performers ahead of them both produce a vaporeon and a poliwag, which enter the performance pool with a bubble move. [break][break]

"arc, cover the room with ice."[break][break]

arctovish dunks into the pool from backstage and swims to the center of it, where the young rangers can see, and bursts out in a brilliant arc. he produces an aurora veil to create a glittering ice screen to augment the view the students have.[break][break]

the young woman watches in wonder as gleaming speckles of ice fluttered down, coating the room with a multi-shimmer glow. even from backstage, she could hear the hush of ecstatic oohs and ahhs that filled the room. [break][break]

"that's fair. i don't think i was too hard to impress as a kid." alina says with a soft laugh as she peers at ronan. surprisingly, his dark eyes burned intensely as he watched previous performances, hyper-aware of the attention that they each respectively received. [break][break]

how did she forget? for as chaotic as the young reptile could get, he was equally as competitive. perhaps this would go in her favor, after all. [break][break]

"okay, ronan. go in with a hydro pump." she whispers, and the totodile sped off without a second thought. [break][break]

with an excited yelp, he dunks into the pool before emerging back out forcefully. escalating quickly into mid-air, he maneuvers across stage with the hydro pump acting as a jet pack. the reptile spins around gleefully once he reaches the center of the stage, a blue and red whirl amidst a spiral liquid vortex. even in mid-air, he cranks his neck to gauge the audience's reaction, eager for applause.[break][break]

the hydro pump use is clever. several of the youth awe and cheer at the sight of it. it begs the question of how many of them will try to do similar techniques at home with their own pokemon...

but it's best to scrape your knees while you're young. hell, keiko considers how well her own pokemon could use hydro pump for movement like that.

"your totodile has a lot of trust in you, i can tell. have you had him for long?"[break][break]

arctovish is a lower intelligence pokemon and rather obedient, but he's a new addition to keiko's team all the same. [break][break]

it's best that that arcotivsh was with her when the program director begged for their help. her longest partner, her pelipper, would've been a disaster to have out here.[break][break]
