It's not every day that a man turns 19, maybe even especially in this line of work. He'd done his best to keep the special day under wraps - it wasn't exactly something he was fond of or particularly hard-pressed to celebrate. That, and it wasn't like he had any real friends in Rocket who'd give a damn about a birthday. [break][break]

He'd received a call from his adopted family - some shitty obligatory reminder that they 'cared' and 'wished him well'. Regardless, it seemed as though someone else had overheard the gesture and made plans behind his back. Turns out, maybe River really did have friends in Rocket, in the places he least suspected.[break][break]

Katherine Fairburne had dropped a not-so-subtle hint to meet her at a bar in Slateport. She'd sounded suspicious and like she was up to something, but he was too curious to worry too much about it. Can you say, boy brain? It's not every day a beautiful girl asks you out for drinks out of nowhere. Especially not after the less-than-stellar interactions they'd had prior.[break][break]

But, she was super hot and he was super hot, so that had to make this all work out, right?[break][break]

That's his thought process as he enters the bar, scanning the area for Katherine.

It was weird to feel this excited for a birthday that wasn't even hers.

And yet despite the awkwardness of it, Katherine still found a way to enjoy this day. As soon as she'd heard that River's birthday was approaching, she made sure to ask him to save the day (or rather, the night) all for her. She also made sure to clarify that he wasn't saving his night to meet her in her place, so he wouldn't get any ideas.

She was nice, sure, but she wasn't that nice.

Her plan for his special day was different. Since it didn't seem like he was considering going to college anytime soon, she figured that there was no one better than herself to throw him a 'Find your drink' themed birthday party.

Naturally, she dressed well for the occasion. Kat was wearing a short, red dress that revealed almost too much of her natural curves and assets. She was equipped with a small, golden bag and fine, golden jewelry. The type she definitely couldn't afford but certainly stole. She sat near the bar and made some small talk with the bartender, having arrived a couple of minutes earlier than River.

The bell rings ever so subtly when he enters the building, drawing the woman's attention immediately.

"River! Over here!"

Luckily, she is not a drunk mess this time. Or well... She isn't a drunk mess yet. A half-emptied glass of martini remained near Katherine along with several bottles of different types of alcohol. Vodka, whiskey, rum - you name it.

By the end of tonight, River would either get an alcohol poisoning or find his favorite drink. It seemed as if the party-planner was willing to welcome both outcomes.

Understandably, River had been more than a little nervous to see what it was that Katherine had planned. She was unpredictable and insane, reckless and probably super dangerous. And he was more than a little attracted and terrified of her.[break][break]

But she seemed genuinely excited to celebrate with him and he was pretty sure he'd have a good time at least admiring her. She always dressed nice and smelled nice and looked nice. What?[break][break]

And boy, did she deliver. The woman was dressed in a nearly too-short red dress and it took all of his concentration to keep his face from turning the same brilliant shade. [break][break]

The moment comes to a jarring halt, however, when the bell rings as he opens the door. Kat looks up from her conversation with the bartender to call him over, and he complies because how could be possibly say no to Katherine Fairburne?[break][break]

But his attention sweeps over the dozens of different drinks spread behind the counter. He raises an eyebrow as he approaches.[break][break]

"You look lovely, Kat."

Katherine naturally rises from the tall bar chair after calling River over, standing up so she could greet him properly. A smile manifests upon her lips at the sight of him, and his compliment only serves to make it grow wider. "I know, right? I needed an excuse to try this dress on."

She grabs his hand with hers, pulling him closer into a tight, short-lived embrace. There were undoubtedly at least a couple of guys inside this bar who'd have paid to switch places with River. "Happy birthday! I hope you've come prepared, because this place doesn't close until very late. And I have no plan for us to leave before we're forced to!"

The bartender didn't seem as pleased to hear about her plan but this wasn't a night to worry about the feelings of strangers. Kat reclaimed her seat before pulling her martini glass closer, stealing a sip of it before directing her gaze back towards River.

"So - you should start with a drink."

"What have you tried so far, River? Beer, I am guessing? Guys your age usually stick to beer, if they even drink."

He's quite literally blown away when she stands up to greet him. Had he been less prepared or capable of keeping his expression in check, he might have blushed. But he's a charmer, easily charmed in return - but careful about when he expresses himself. You don't win by rushing to the finish line, or something.[break][break]

"You don't need an excuse, love."[break][break]

He's trying to be smooth, but she's smoother. His hand is pulled and he's leaning into a brief hug with the woman. When she pulls away he does as well, determined not to ruin the moment. If he intended on getting anywhere, he needed to play his cards right.[break][break]

"Thank you, but ahh.. I honestly wasn't expecting any of this."[break][break]

It didn't intimidate him, however, that she had no plans on leaving until they'd be kicked out. If she was all in, he was, too.[break][break]

But he's a little unsure about the drinking game. He was more inclined to drugs than he was to alcohol. Dusty old cans of beer were probably the only thing he'd ever dabbled in, and it never struck him as worth continuing. Why would anyone enjoy something that tasted so.. boring?[break][break]

River was far from boring.[break][break]

"Cheap beer, mostly. What would you recommend?"

"Don't worry! This is just a birthday-special. Next time you'll be the one buying the drinks."

Katherine assures him with that familiar, devilish smirk of hers. By the look across her face, one might think that she had a different plan for tonight - something she has yet to share with River. After all, this was a part of Kat's charm. How unpredictable she was, the chaos that followed her.

"Hm... It really depends on the person and the mood you're in. If you want something sweet, a cocktail is good to start with. Something that'll get you wasted? Cheap shots of vodka. A drink to warm your throat and make you feel fuzzy? Scotch."

And the bartender seemed to have all of those prepared for River to choose from - and more. Rum, gin, tequila. Everything one could possibly think of.

And whereas it'd be polite to let River decide for himself - Kat doesn't grant him this luxury.

"We'll have two shots of blueberry vodka. The cheapest you have. Then... Make him a rusty nail, please."

The pair of shots arrive first in short clear glasses. The alcohol in them carried a strong, sharp smell of alcohol and a hint of the flavor itself: blueberry. In addition, the rusty nail cocktail came a minute or so afterward, placed on a coaster near River.

"Don't drink it slow." She warns with her lips still stretched into a smile, "Unless you want it to burn more than it should."

And then Katherine downs her shot.

River chuckles, nodding along to her promise. Though he couldn't honestly see himself paying for anything later - he was more than happy to pretend to oblige to keep the mood light.[break][break]

That, and he's entranced by her devilish smirk and would probably agree to anything if it meant getting to stay in her orbit and under her influence even a moment longer. How had he not realized how unbelievable beautiful she was?[break][break]

Probably because, like him, she's a disaster. She just wears heels and party dresses as she does it.[break][break]

He isn't given the chance to pick something for himself and he's quite honestly alright with that. The sooner he could feel his conscious slip away and let his body respond with its own instinct was better.[break][break]

River smirks playfully in response as she orders them two shots of something potent and blue. it's sweet and sour and burns when he takes it. His face contorts for a moment and he blinks in surprise, gasping.[break][break]

"My God."[break][break]

But it's making his tongue blue and his lips numb and he's content.

There isn't the slightest hints of a wince when the alcohol passes through her lips. The strong taste and the burn it leaves in her throat are both welcomed and expected in a loving way. If there was any comfort in living a life where you could afford anything, then it was cheap booze. The hungover might have sucked but it was worth the high of not remembering where you've been and what you've done.

"It's good, isn't it?"

His cocktail is pushed closer by one of her hands, and the other guides her glass to her lips again. Whatever remained of her martini is taken in if only so she could tend to the olive skewer. The pair of olives are both freed from the cocktail pick by her teeth.

And really, who can blame her for giving River eyes when it's done? It's a classic yet trashy move, and it fit a storm on heels like Katherine perfectly.

"Is there anything you've wanted to try before?" Is she still referring to a bunch of drinks? "It's better if you say it now, you know. While we still remember where we are." When the chances are higher for them to remember this conversation tomorrow.

Quite something, anyway. He wasn't sure what the fuss was about with the burn in the back of his throat or the fogginess that now clings to the back of his mind - but he can appreciate the gesture, regardless. Especially if it means watching Katherine smile.[break][break]

His eyes shamelessly follow the curve of her lips as she finishes her martini, as her teeth pluck the olives. She watches him with some sort o sultry allure and he's putty in her metaphorical hands.[break][break]

He can already feel his heartbeat quicken.[break][break]

And it's because of this that he slips up when she asks such a dodgy question. Perhaps he knows what she really means - or maybe he's just putting his own pieces together and jumping the gun.[break][break]

"Plenty more."[break][break]

He smiles, tilting his head. He's leaned a little bit closer but it's only so that he can reach for the rum behind her. Though his eyes stray to catch her reaction as he pulls back.[break][break]

"What can you make with rum?"

Katherine can only be described as unphased and unbothered when River closes in. It's almost as if she expects it or perhaps even possessed a poker-face that could put a professional player to shame. She was a control freak in more than one way, and it's no surprise that her feelings fail to get the better of her.

She is not a fool after all. And if some blush happened to paint her cheeks with redness, it was solely due to the alcohol.

Or so she'd like to believe.

"Rum?"

A moment of silence lingers when her eyes stare at the bottle instead of River himself, "Well, it depends on what you're going for. Daiquiri can be nice if you don't mind something sour. And mojito is great for when you need something fresh. Like..."

She hummed all while thinking of the perfect scenario.

"A vacation in a beach house, maybe." Her hand inched closer and a finger of her softly touched River's hand on the bottle, slowly drawing a circle on his skin. "You could use a tan, you know? Maybe you should consider a vacation."

It's hard to tell whether if Kat was offering advice or proposing something.

There is no immediate reaction when he leans past her to pull the bottle close. It takes a moment to fester, to gauge a reaction. And then she's coming back for more.[break][break]

He studies her expression as she muses over his question, over the drink and possible mixtures. He grins at the mention of the beach, grinning more when her hand, her finger, rests against the back of his hand.[break][break]

River instinctively relaxes, enjoying the attention.[break][break]

"Where would you like to go?"[break][break]

He glances at the bartender, indicating he'd like whatever a 'mojito' might be. A relaxing drink reminding her of a vacation at the beach sounded lovely.

Katherine's humming is soft and almost melodic, like a song is on the tip of her tongue and she's resisting the urge to sing a few of its lyrics. "Honestly, I am not sure. I've always wanted to visit Sinnoh but if you're asking me about right now? I'd go anywhere."

Well, as long as it wasn't in Hoenn. She needed a change of pace.

The mojito arrives after a minute or two, and despite being delivered to River, Katherine steals the glass and brings it to her lips for a sip. "Oh, it's good. You'll like it." The refreshing taste of mint lingered in her mouth, almost forcing her to order another glass for herself.

River's attention doesn't drift from her face, not even when the mojito arrives. So when she grabs it and lifts it to her lips, stealing a sip before he could have a chance, River's lips purse with amusement. [break][break]

He leans toward her, his attention isn't on the drink in her hand - his drink. It's tracing the shape of her lips, the curve of her neck.[break][break]

Her eyes are on his, the drink is kept so close to her lips that it seems like any moment now she intends to taste it again. Katherine knows that it isn't the drink River is focused on or even looking at, but she's willing to play a game.

"If you have to ask... Then the answer will always be no. Some things you just have to take." Politeness was not the name of this game. "But since it's your birthday, I'll make an exception."

The glass is placed back on the bar, free for River to take. Unless it isn't the drink he was asking about, in that case, he'd most certainly have to lean in closer.
