Marshall grinned. "You sure are. C'mon, meet you in the ring."[break][break]

He clapped King on the back before walking off to finish warming up. Shedding his shirt and shoes, Marshall stepped inside the chalk circle opposite their newest arrival.[break][break]

"Rules are this: there are none. Everythin' is free game. Fight ends when one person taps out, not before." He raised his bare-knuckled fists and grinned. "So gimme your best shot, new guy."[break][break]

The fight was sweaty and bloody, lasting longer than Marshall expected, which pleased him. Neither he nor King gave in until they were both too exhausted to keep going. Afterward, Marshall cracked open two cold beers and handed one to the other man.[break][break]

"You know your shit," he said. "You know what, you can keep comin' back. I'd be glad to fight again, an' these guys," he gestured to the other men and women in the basement, "would love a chance to get a piece of ya."

Marshall recalled Diode into a Pokéball just as the Orbeetle hit the water. Meanwhile, his Carracosta brought them back to the docks just in the nick of time. The ice from Jasmine's Pokémon hit the ocean water, freezing its surface.[break][break]

When he looked, Marshall saw the two remaining Tentacruel stop, deterred. They seemed to confer between themselves before turning away, hauling their unconscious companion between them.[break][break]

"Looks like that's it," he said, breathing a deep sigh of relief. "Good job, you two. And you too, Cruiser." He patted the Carracosta on her thick shell.[break][break]

Marshall turned his back to the sea and scanned the docks to survey the damage. The camp counselors were helping calm the children and check for any injuries.[break][break]

"Are all the kids safe? We good here?" he asked his friends.

The low-level gang member who opened the door gave King the onceover, then pulled the door open wider to allow the man to step inside. "Come in."[break][break]

After shutting and locking it, he led King to the large storage room at the back of the garage. Nothing strange seems afoot yet, as it's still early. But as soon as the lackey led King to the far end of the storage room and opened the door there, conversation drifted up through the dimly lit stairwell that greeted them.[break][break]

The stairs led to a large, concrete basement with a ring marked out in chalk in the center of the floor. Several men and a couple of women stretched in the area around it, chatting and laughing.[break][break]

Marshall strode up to King, instantly recognizing him. "Hey, ya made it!" he exclaimed, clapping the man on the shoulder. "Right on time, too. Lemme guess: you want the first round?"

Marshall thought he'd heard of a place like that in Slateport, but he pulled out his own phone anyway to look it up. He bookmarked it on his browser and made a mental note to take a trip soon with Keira Torres.[break][break]

"Cool. I'll check it out."[break][break]

Tucking his phone back into his pocket, he half-turned back toward his motorcycle, intent on returning to his work.[break][break]

"Eight, yeah. People come here to sweat and bleed, not to fuck around. If you show up later, you gotta wait for your turn in the ring. Rules are pretty simple."[break][break]

He picked up a wrench.[break][break]

Marshall sat back and listened to Magnus speak. Nothing spoken was news to him; he knew Magnus had ambitions beyond the gang's business in Mauville. And when the floor opened up for thoughts and objections, he stayed silent.[break][break]

It was not his job to counter Magnus in public, but to support the voices of others within Orthrus if the ideas were sound. For example:[break][break]

"Cal's got a good point, boss," Marshall said, with a nod of acknowledgement at @virgil.[break][break]

As much as Marshall had every right to stand at Jack Magnus's side when doing business with the League and Team Rocket, he was too well-known as Magnus' right-hand man. Sending two unknown faces to interface with the League on one hand and Team Rocket on the other was just smart.[break][break]

"Kiki and I can operate behind the scenes, but we need two people who can be good go-betweens for the League and Rocket. Folks with charisma who can study what works best on each group, report back here, an' put our strategies to use."[break][break]

His gaze slid to @deimos when the mechanic spoke. Deimos' point was important, too.[break][break]

"Ever since we started, we've always had a reputation for a high success rate and professionalism when completin' contracts. We have the people, the weapons, the Pokémon. It made us a valuable commodity in Unova and so far, we've been shapin' up here as the same."[break][break]

Whether the League and Team Rocket needed such a resource was another matter, however.

"Weird shit?" he echoed, skepticism clear in his voice. Not that he doubted Deimos; no, quite the opposite. He turned his question to the guy in his hands. "What weird shit you puttin' in your engine, buddy?"[break][break]

"Nothin'," said the man, stubbornly.[break][break]

Marshall rolled his eyes. "Uh huh, yeah. Nothin'. We'll see about that." He threw the stranger onto the ground, uninterested in hurting him. Punishment was reserved for people who broke the rules; as far as he was aware, no rules had been broken.[break][break]

Yet.[break][break]

"Get outta my sight," Marshall snarled. "I better not see you ridin' any of these shitty bikes anymore around here, either."[break][break]

The other man didn't move for a moment. Then Camber roared, and he scrambled backward several feet before climbing to his feet and dashing off.

There was absolutely no way Marshall was going to miss an important gang meeting. But with the heat wave, he had to make sure everyone was able to stay cool and focused on the discussion at hand. So while he wasn't the first person to arrive, he was certainly the most well-prepared.[break][break]

"Sup," he greeted everyone as he entered the room, wheeling a large cooler behind him. "Got enough ice and drinks in this bad boy to keep us hydrated."[break][break]

Inside the cooler were bottles of water, cans of soda, and bottles of beer. Marshall grabbed a beer for himself and a second one for Jack Magnus, which he opened and handed to his boss like a dutiful second.[break][break]

"Kiki's gonna be running late, she said," Marshall murmured to Magnus, leaning down so only he (and possibly Jasmine Blair) could hear. "So you can get started whenever."[break][break]

Then the second head of the dog stepped back and took up his position in a chair nearby.

"Hey man, you're the one gettin' old," he said to Cain, unfazed by the posturing. "We'll see just who's gonna get their ass dragged outta the ring."[break][break]

He clapped Cain on the shoulder, a friendly gesture. No animosity hung between them, at least not from Marshall's end. But many years had passed since the two men had spent time together — enough time for either of them to have changed.[break][break]

How much had Cain changed?[break][break]

"I gotta do some more rounds in the crowd, but stay as long as you want. Enjoy the show. And stop by any weeknight after eight o'clock. The garage will be closed but knock on the door and tell 'em I invited you."

Old friends. That was certainly one way of putting it — and probably the easiest explanation for now. Marshall did not correct Keira. Instead, he nodded in support of her answer.[break][break]

"Same one," he confirmed. "Though Kiki was still a little young for those big jobs, at the time. She was good at runnin' errands and was learnin' how to steal all proper. In a few years, she'd have been doin' those jobs same as me."[break][break]

Any kid could be a pickpocket, but more complicated operations required cunning and obedience that most thirteen-year-olds didn't have.[break][break]

The waiter returned with Keira's cocktail and Marshall's beer. He met her easy grin with one of his own, hoping it meant he'd get laid again later. For now, however, he lounged back in his seat and sipped his drink while Magnus forged ahead.

Marshall looked over his shoulder at Jasmine's warning. Sure enough, three more Tentacruel emerged from underwater. "Of course," he grumbled to no one in particular. "Just our lucky fuckin' day."[break][break]

Then, more loudly, he shouted, "Change of plans, Diode! Fire off HYPNOSIS as much as you can!"[break][break]

The Orbeetle swung around, targeting the closest Tentacruel of the group. A well-placed HYPNOSIS incapacitated it, but one of the others launched its own attack. A WATER PULSE knocked the Orbeetle out of the air.[break][break]

Meanwhile, the third Tentacruel summoned a massive wave with SURF.[break][break]

"Raph, Jazzy! Look out!" Marshall roared as he and his Pokémon turned to race toward the docks.

Marshall sat up straight, grateful for the dangerous Pokémon's presence. It was something to do that didn't involve thinking about maybe having kids someday.[break][break]

"Shit!" He reached for one of the Pokéballs on his belt. "Whatever you do, it can't harm the kids too!" he warned Raphael and Jasmine.[break][break]

Then he tossed the Pokéball. Light flashed and faded, revealing his Orbeetle.[break][break]

"Diode, there's a Tentacruel under the water!" Marshall pointed at the large shadow beneath the waves. "Can you hit it with PSYCHIC?"[break][break]

The Seven Spot Pokémon chirped its alien cry and targeted the Water-type. Its limbs flailed as the attack connected; they lashed out at people and Pokémon alike, and smashed into the nearest pier. Marshall clung to his Carracosta's shell as she cut through the water to avoid a tentacle.

That King had never heard of Orthrus should not have surprised Marshall, but it grated his nerves to have the gang's name dismissed so easily. Orthrus was no longer the big fish in the small pond that had been Castelia. Though they were thriving in their territory in Mauville, they were still small fry in the grand scheme of things.[break][break]

Marshall was sure that would change soon. Jack Magnus was not a man to rest on his laurels. That's why they had come to Hoenn in the first place.[break][break]

"Here, but not here-here," Marshall said to King. "We got our setup in the basement. Just knock on the door and tell 'em I sent you over."[break][break]

Despite his casual demeanor, he watched the other man closely. King still hadn't voiced his intentions, and Marshall was certain he was going to remain close-lipped, even after the fights. Marshall made a mental note for himself to look into things later.[break][break]

Marshall turned his attention to the Houndour puppy in Magnus' lap. Coco's presence was completely unsurprising. Despite the other man's terrifying stature and commanding demeanor, he had a strong loyalty to those loyal to him — both human and Pokémon.[break][break]

And dogs were his favorite, as evidenced by his new gang's name and symbol.[break][break]

"She's cute, boss," Marshall said, his grin and compliment genuine. "You thought about gettin' stitches, maybe?"[break][break]

But he fell silent as Keira and Magnus began to speak with each other. Marshall knew his role: bring the lady called Crimson to meet with the head of Orthrus. But they alone would drive the conversation forward, bargaining skills and resources.[break][break]

A waiter came with Magnus' bourbon. Without interrupting the exchange already underway, Marshall leaned in to place an order.[break][break]

"One gin and tonic for the lady, one beer for me," he said in a low voice, tapping the menu to indicate his beer selection.

Marshall strode over to the stranger and his motorcycle. "Sounds like you know your way around a bike," he said as he crouched down for a closer look at the vehicle. "You're probably right. We can open it up an' take a look for sure, though."[break][break]

He stood and waved over one of the mechanics who actually worked for the body shop. She hurried over and, after a quick introduction, wheeled Jett's bike onto a nearby platform.[break][break]

"Name's Marshall," the black-haired man said to the newcomer. "And yeah, we're new. Set up shop here a few months ago. You a local?"[break][break]

Jett's name and face were unfamiliar to Marshall. Orthrus' second-in-command had scoped out the biker scene as soon as his gang had arrived at Mauville City two years ago.[break][break]

And since then, he'd remained a regular presence, attending races, advertising the garage, and representing Orthrus at various events.
