Hazel's head tilts at the offer, a small smile slipping across his features. "That would be quite nice, Miss Calcifet, thank you. I appreciate the offer." His enthusiasm grows just a bit more as she continues. "Oh! that sounds most interesting. I would be very curious to learn more about your family's history. Especially after what you've already described."[break][break]
Johtonian history is a weak spot in his purview, after all. He should correct that.[break][break]
"Certainly." He watches her sit, and hands off the first book that was easy to find. Quietly, he works - sifting through his various shelves, plucking texts from confines until he comes away with a neat stack. Turning back toward her, Hazel holds them out. "Here you are - ah, let me get a back so they'll be secure."[break][break]
He pulls a soft fabric bag from his desk, and offers this as well. "I hope these suit your needs."

A low hum of interest followed the other’s explanation. “Interesting. I’d certainly be glad to lend my assistance wherever it might be needed.” And if he could glean anything that might be useful for his own side of things, then that would be even better.[break][break]

Though, of course, his peer needn’t know as much.[break][break]

The unfortunate interruption was dissatisfying because it cut off the tap of information that Hazel suddenly had access to, but it was not wholly unexpected, either.[break][break]

Hazel nodded, before waving a hand in dismissal. “Not an issue, I completely understand how that goes.” A pleasant smile worked its way across Hazel’s face as he glanced back up at Gideon and set his tea cup down.[break][break]

An academic’s work was never done, it often felt.[break][break]

“If that’s quite alright, I’d very much enjoy doing exactly that.” Though for a moment, he would sit a bit longer and enjoy the vivillon some more. Under his chair, the espeon rumbled his agreement– tail flitting as he continued to study the insects with keen, feline interest.[break][break]

“Likewise,” he inclined his head in a nod of farewell. “I look forward to hearing from you.”

He couldn’t help but let a small chuckle slip free at the surprise that wrote itself across Frank’s face. “Not expecting that?” he asked after a moment, mouth twitching at the corners in amusement.[break][break]

His own teacup was lifted for a sip, and Hazel quietly reflected on the dilemma presented. What would he do? He could understand not wanting to disappoint someone. Had he and Hugo Albrecht not danced those similar steps, each time Hazel ignored his health in favor of work? The nature was different, but the familiarity was there. It boiled down to the same sort of thing.[break][break]

A partner’s peace of mind.[break][break]

“Well, if you think he’d be understanding of it, I would say it warrants a conversation. Though, I suppose I cannot say whether or not it would go well.” He sipped from his cup again. “Particularly if he has a certain idea of how staying clean is perceived. After all, you could say that I maintain a clean reputation. But there is dirt under my nails all the same. It’s a matter of wearing the correct pair of gloves.”[break][break]

Hazel hummed contemplatively, head tilting as he tapped at his chin. “Perhaps something within accounting? Money management is essential, especially with an organization as large as Rocket. Or counterfeit, maybe?” A mild smile crossed his face as his eyes settled on Frank again, pleasant as ever. As if he wasn’t discussing criminal activity.[break][break]

“I’d be inclined to suggest somewhere within the smuggling branch, though that would be a bit biased on my part. Given that is typically where I operate.” Paper pushing for the most part now, and assisting Hugo in the organization of varied jobs.[break][break]

But at one time, he’d been much more active. In what felt like another lifetime some days.

Hazel exhaled slowly, fingers tapping together. He deliberated only a moment later over showing some of his hand, but perhaps trust could work both ways.[break][break]

He’d proven that he wouldn’t hold Frank’s history against him. Hopefully the same could be said of Frank. Hazel did have Hugo to look out for too, after all.[break][break]

And he would do little to jeoparadize his husband (even if he was the more flippant of the two of them.)[break][break]

Frank repeated himself, and Hazel understood. He supposed he could understand— wouldn’t he also do anything possible to ensure that he avoided disappointing or hurting his partner?[break][break]

“In that case, your talents might prove useful within Rocket rank,” he said simply. As if anyone might suggest such a thing offhandedly as a solution to an issue.[break][break]

It wasn't difficult to tell that Frank seemed out of his element in sharing this information. Hazel found that he could relate - apart from his partner, he had a difficult time being so prone and expressive about personal matters himself. It was practically akin to pulling teeth, so he was patient as Frank chose his words. Understanding of it.[break][break]
"At least it wasn't for murder," he finally remarked in light response, his words an attempt to draw some sort of levity to the moment.[break][break]
"Perhaps that's the danger of dealing with media and news outlets." He lifted a shoulder in a short shrug. "Fickle." His finger tapped at the tabletop methodically in thought. The option remained - to suggest ties that could be forged, or not. Was the risk worth it?[break][break]
"Those charges, though, all lend to a proficiency with money management," he said, pausing with a rueful smile, "aside from the bit about being caught and charged, of course."[break][break]
He hoped that the tease was enough to indicated that he was not put off by Frank's revelation. "Which makes sense for a financial group. but if that's not panning out, there are always other means to utilize those talents."[break][break]
His fingers steeple together in front of him. "It's a matter of whether or not you wish to continue keeping your hands clean."

MURDER AT MAPLE MANOR

[attr="class","text"]The buzz of the error light blinks on as the three of them watch. How strange.. His head tilts to the side as Cillian Quinn holds up the cracked TR. “It’s kind of odd that they left this with the rest. Why not toss it out?” It seems to be a moot point, though, because where does it lead them? How was it used? Those are questions that can’t be answered standing there at the case. So when Cillian suggests they take their investigation elsewhere, Hazel agrees with no protest.[break][break]

As he heads toward the hall, however, he pauses when he notices the strange man from earlier sorting through foul laundry with someone else. “You go on ahead, I’ll be right there.” He nods to the underboss, and shifts directions.[break][break]

He doesn’t know what possesses him to stop and assist Grigori Sokolov and howard slayte as they rifle through the disgusting heap, because it’s positively rank. Perhaps it’s the slip of paper that flutters to the ground unnoticed, which he stoops and picks up with careful fingers as his nose wrinkles in distaste. “Here, I think one of you must’ve dropped this,”[break][break]

Hazel holds the paper out, willing one of them to take it from him. Once it’s relinquished, he picks through the remaining heap— curious as to whether or not any more of these notes might be found within the confines of stiffened, sweaty fabric.

At least rifling through disgusting laundry proves insightful, in the end. The pockets of sweaty, discarded clothing yields yet another crumpled note. And not one to be taken lightly. As thunder cracks and then begins to wane outdoors, Hazel sighs and attempts to re-fold the paper into neater fashion before following his fellow rummagers out in the main hall.[break][break]

And seriously— where on earth had howard slayte produced that detective’s cap from? Had he had one on his person the entire time for absolutely no reason at all. He nudges the archaeologist with an elbow as he passes, an amused huff at the way Howard deflates once the theory is offered before he can make his own grand reveal. “Next time, bring a wooden pipe along too. Maybe you’ll deduce quicker.”[break][break]

All the same, though, he nods his agreement with the rest and then offers the notes for further examination, pulled from his pockets and offered with much less panache or flourish. “I’m inclined to agree. These notes and the spent TR doesn’t bode well for Andrea, when held up next to everything else.”[break][break]

Hazel shrugs, unbothered. It is easy to agree, because he didn’t puzzle it out quite as quickly. Regardless, it seems the most credible theory by far, and it would do them little good to suggest any other alternative.

Hazel's frown only deepened as Frank continued. Setting down his cup, his hands laced together neatly on the table in front of him. He'd never considered himself the sort to be adept with giving advice.[break][break]
But at the very least, he could provide an attentive ear.[break][break]
"Surely if they're this important," he replied carefully, "then.." Okay, so Hazel was a lousy reassurer too. Friendship, real and authentic, was difficult to navigate, he decided then. But worth the effort, yes? No matter how awkwardly Hazel fumbled through it. He liked to think so.[break][break]
"Oh." The silent ah followed as understanding settled in. He wondered if Frank expected him to react negatively. Maybe he would have, if he'd been void of his current affiliations. "May I ask what for?" It seemed like pertinent information. And in any case, his words were laced with curiosity rather than criticism.[break][break]
His head tilted as he mulled over a response. "I can see why that might be cause for concern." Each word was a slow, measured tread forward.[break][break]
