Paige frowned. It was as she'd expected.[break][break]
The young woman set down her chopsticks and took a deep breath. She glanced out the window of the small restaurant, finding there to be a stark contrast between Marcus's ominous assessment and the glittering, bustling sunshine-kissed Ever Grande city. A certain tension hung in the air, then, as if some supernatural monster might appear out of nowhere and suddenly attack the city.[break][break]
But then she nodded to herself, and turned back to face him.[break][break]
"What can I do to help?" She asked matter-of-factly. It wasn't really the question of a naive farm girl, though that's what Marcus would probably think, but rather, the sentiment of a concerned citizen who knew in her heart that she could not sit idly by and watch others suffer. Now that she knew what was happening, could he really expect her to un-know it? Unsee what she'd seen in Granite Cave?[break][break]
"Surely there's some way for...for people like me to get involved. To protect people." Her expression was determined. "Like you protected me."

She didn't mind his silence. For one, there was so much to take in about the big city - the bustling crowds, tall skyscrapers with glittering mirror-like windows that seemed to extend for miles into the sky, and a variety of different shops. The little family-run restaurant was adorable, and she was impressed by how many people could fit inside given the lack of space.[break][break]
She'd never had Alolan cuisine before, so that was interesting too. She ordered a brightly colored poke bowl: slices of pecha berry, sashimi, avocado, seaweed salad, and some kind of tangy soy dressing over rice...it was delicious![break][break]
After a while, however, her mind began to drift back to the hearing. As they ate, Paige remembered the stern tone of the government official who had questioned her. Everyone around them had been very serious, several people frantically scribbling notes as she'd spoken. The whole thing had given Paige anxiety - not just because she'd been forced to speak publicly in front of many imposing strangers, but because the whole thing had given her a profound sense of foreboding even though she had absolutely no idea what was actually going on.[break][break]
"There's something wrong with Hoenn, isn't there..." she remarked, finally breaking the silence. She gazed up at Marcus with wide, chocolate brown eyes full of genuine concern. "I know you can't tell me anything classified but...please. I need to know. Are we all in some kind of terrible danger?"

His lack of expression didn't bother Paige. Some people were shy, some simply found small talk tedious. She mentally prepared for him to walk brusquely away, already beginning to temper her disappointment.[break][break]
But he didn't leave. He continued to stand next to her in awkward silence, a towering pillar of scrutiny. She blushed prettily as his eyes traveled over her figure.[break][break]
"I suppose I'm doing allright," she answered, when he finally seemed to remember how to have a conversation. "I was a bit nervous earlier, but the hearing is over now." Her tone betrayed her relief. "They wanted to interview me...about what happened at Granite Cave a few weeks ago." She paused. "They said they talked to you too."[break][break]
She shuffled her feet, the narrow hallway with its rows of official looking office doors feeling suddenly oppressive. Her stomach growled, and she glanced up at a clock on the wall. An idea popped into her head, and her mood lifted again.[break][break]
"Hey, are you free to grab lunch? I don't know this city well, maybe you could take me somewhere you like?"[break][break]
Her hopeful smile was like sunshine filtering through an otherwise dreary room.

Paige beamed at him.[break][break]
"That's right, Paige Myers." She cradled her water bottle in her arms, turning away from the fountain to face him. "Thank you again for saving me. How are you, anyway? I've been thinking about you."[break][break]
Warm brown eyes drank in Marcus Lang, accompanied by a faint blush as Paige admired the muscles of his upper arms and chest, tight shirt accentuating his natural bulk. Though he was dressed slightly differently than before - less protective armor - he still looked the part of a soldier - army pants and boots coupled with his severe demeanor. All the same, it seemed to her that he wasn't about to be shipped off on some new mission any time in the immediate future.[break][break]
This pleased Paige for some reason. As soon as she'd recognized Marcus, a feeling of urgency had overcome her. She didn't want him to slip away, disappear from her life again - especially not now that she'd been about to exhaust her last possible chance of encountering him. She had no idea when she'd ever have a reason to come back to Ever Grande, so the fact that she'd actually found him felt important. She wanted to savor it.[break][break]

Paige had rarely ever had cause to leave Dewford before, let alone visit the infamous Pokémon League. Her family had been shocked when she'd received the extremely formal-looking government-sealed letterhead requesting her presence at Ever Grande City to provide testimony regarding "sensitive topics of a supernatural nature." At first she had been confused - perhaps the League had made some kind of mistake - until she realized that they must want to hear about what had happened in that rift at Granite Cave, when she'd been attacked by an abomination she still wasn't entirely sure had been real.[break][break]
A few weeks later, on the date of the hearing, she found herself surrounded by imposing looking politicians, military officers, and scientific experts as she nervously recounted her experience. Sweat beaded at her hairline and her supportive ankle wrap itched against her skin. She did her best to explain what had happened, what she had seen, and how she had escaped.[break][break]
"You really ought to talk to the soldier who saved my life," she concluded. "He probably understands all this a lot better than I do."[break][break]
They assured her that Marcus Lang had been interviewed, but would not elaborate. It was the first time she had heard his name in full; he had only introduced himself by way of first name when they'd met. Well, maybe now she could actually look him up. Not that she really had any reason to, except that ever since her whole ordeal in the Ultra Deep Sea (that's what the government folks called it) she had found it difficult to forget about Marcus.[break][break]
Perhaps it was fate, then, that drew her to a specific drinking fountain on the first floor of the Pokémon League after the hearing (she was parched) where, in the midst of re-filling her water bottle, noticed a man turning the corner towards her. He was so familiar, and so relevant, she nearly dropped her water bottle in shock.[break][break]
"Marcus!" Her exclamation was one of pure, unadulterated delight.

She didn't argue, but she bit her lip, a sign of frustration to those who knew her well. Her brow furrowed and she debated whether or not she would actually take his advice. On one hand, she did not want to meet another monster; on the other, she wasn't exactly willing to leave people like Mrs. Sawyer to suffer alone. Maybe she could at least ask her parents if the elderly woman could come and stay with them for a few nights, until this business had concluded.[break][break]
Another dimension? That was...unexpected. She'd heard things on the news about rifts, but she'd never thought they could actually affect Dewford. This was a small island with a meager population. What could have caused such a portal to open here?[break][break]
Well, some questions would have to remain unanswered. For now.[break][break]
"I'm Paige, by the way," she said to her savior, her introduction overflowing with sincere gratitude. Her frown turned into a gentle smile as she gazed back up at him.[break][break]
"You saved my life. It was incredibly brave." She blushed a deeper shade of pink, suddenly hyperaware of the way his arms shifted around her - readjusting slightly - as he and their Pokémon passed through the rift.[break][break]
"Thank you."

Paige nodded.[break][break]
"Close. My family runs a berry farm just outside the town proper." She paused. "But you can drop me off in town, if that's easier for you." She didn't want to be more of a burden than she already was.[break][break]
Paige fell into a troubled silence. Could creatures like that make it out of Granite Cave and into Dewford? If there were more of the tusked beasts, they could run rampage through the small town. Dewford wasn't a sprawling metropolis like Slateport. And what was that mist, anyway? It had made her feel afraid and captivated all at once.[break][break]
"Where are we?" She blurted out. "Why did you come to Dewford? To Granite Cave?"[break][break]
If the island was in danger, she needed to warn her parents, Mrs. Sawyer, everyone. But wouldn't the League have already done that if it were actually true? Something didn't seem right about this. It all felt far too secretive and mysterious for Paige's liking.[break][break]

Paige let out a small yelp of surprise as the soldier unceremoniously scooped her into his arms. On instinct, she cuddled in close to his chest, and at his direction, clutched her hands tightly to the fabric of his uniform. He was so much larger than she was, and his arms were strong and firm as they wrapped around her. She found that her heartbeat had sped up again, but for an entirely new and different reason. She had never been this close to a man before - never been held by a man like this before. There was something undeniably solid about him, comforting and safe.[break][break]
Strudel scurried after the Falinks and the Braviary, eager to keep up. For several long moments, all Paige could hear was their collective breathing. And then he spoke, circling back to her question from earlier.[break][break]
"Looking for people like you," she answered, staring up at him. The angles of his jaw were satisfying to look at. "You're with the League military, aren't you? I just wanted to make sure whatever you were doing wasn't disturbing any of the locals. Mrs. Sawyer - she's a kindly old woman who lives nearby to Granite Cave - was complaining to me about bad dreams and restless nights the other day. I just..." All of a sudden, she felt incredibly foolish. "...thought I'd come up here and see what all the fuss was about."[break][break]
And then I got lost.[break][break]
Paige blushed, turning her gaze away.

Strudel whined, clearly distraught. The man hadn't answered Paige's question about the nature of the abomination - either because he hadn't heard her or he didn't actually know - but it didn't matter, not really, so long as she wouldn't have to face one again any time soon.[break][break]
Now that he mentioned it, her ankle did hurt. As the adrenaline from the chase faded away, she could feel a dull ache traveling from her foot to her upper leg. She glanced down and noticed that the area around her ankle had started to purple and swell. Gingerly - still holding onto him - she attempted to stand. The effort was futile; as soon as she put weight on the leg, she yelped, the pain sharp and immediate. She wavered, then fell back to the ground.[break][break]
"Please," she begged, warm chocolate eyes staring up at him, wide with a sudden panic. "Don't leave me."[break][break]

Paige squeezed her eyes shut, ankle throbbing. She waited for what would surely be a terrible impact resulting in her death but...seconds passed. Nothing happened.[break][break]
Her eyes snapped open and she gasped in surprise as she saw the tusked beast getting thrown backwards by a sudden gust of wind. A Falinks had curled itself around her protectively, the remnants of its temporary barrier shimmering away.[break][break]
And then he was there. The soldier. Up close, she could see that he had a chiseled, stubbled face with intense eyes, cold as ice. He was focused on the battle, not her, but he was close enough to touch - so she did. She reached for his arm and grabbed onto it tightly, as if the solid feel of the muscle beneath his uniform was the only thing reminding her that she was actually still alive.[break][break]
Strudel caught up with them, finally, running up to Paige and immediately checking to make sure she was okay. He licked her free hand, expression concerned. Noticing how hard the Braviary was fighting, he growled, eyes sparkling with a sudden flash of power. A CHARM was directed at the monster, causing its attack power to diminish.[break][break]
Weakened, the abomination howled in pain as the Braviary continued its assault. Paige watched with shock as the creature began to dissipate, forming back into...pinkish-purple mist. She had never seen anything like it in her entire life.[break][break]
"What was that?" She breathed.

Someone was shouting. Paige ripped her gaze away from the strange mist, heart pounding. A man dressed in military fatigues was rushing towards her, an oddly colored Braviary flying behind him. They were being chased, she realized. Chased by...[break][break]
A monster.[break][break]
"Run, Strudel!" She yelled. She scrambled back from the cliff as the man passed her, deciding on the fly that if she had to run anywhere, after him made the most sense. He was clearly one of the League soldiers she'd been looking for this whole time. He probably knew how to get out.[break][break]
The young woman took off, but her untrained muscles were no match for the soldier's, and the distance between them quickly grew. Even Strudel, with his short, stubby legs was faster than Paige. She felt a rising panic as she lagged behind, her breathing coming in shallow gasps, a sharp pain in her side. Glancing behind her, she could see that the creature chasing them - no, the abomination - had great tusks like massive, razor-sharp spears. As it bellowed, its eyes became red-hot pinpricks of rage.[break][break]
Looking back had been a mistake.[break][break]
Paige tripped, screaming as she went down. Her ankle made a terrible popping sound as she fell over one of the sparkling crystals embedded in the dirt. Strudel skidded to a stop ahead, but it was too late. He would not be able to reach her before the monster did.
