Ah...

It's a creature she wasn't expecting to see, nor was it one she was familiar with. Corviknight was a popular choice of aerial Pokemon among prison offices, both for its ease-of-training, and its intimidation factor. Comparatively, Skarmory was a far more difficult prospect to train, and its viciousness often proved more a hindrance than a help. At least, she always assumed that to be the case, but that was just that: An assumption, and nothing more.

It was odd, to see the bird in this underground cave. Valerie would've thought it would prefer to soar in the open skies, instead of being confined to such a cramped and constricted space. Perched upon a roost of stone, it seemed out of place without blue skies above it. However, as her eyes looks the beast up and down, they settle on a gaping crack in its steel armour, a chasm upon the body and reaching across the wing. That certainly made things make more sense. Skarmory had probably lost a fight, and retreated to the safety of the caves so that it could recover in peace. With such a flaw in its carapace, it evidently wasn't operating at 100%. Depending on how severe the damage to the wing was, it was likely closer to 50%.

...It felt a little cruel, to catch it in such a state. It hardly seemed like the right or the noble thing to do. But, as far as she knew, it wasn't against the law to catch an injured wild Pokemon. Besides, she couldn't afford to pass up such an opportunity to procure such a powerful ally. Plus, it would heal far better in a Pokemon Centre than it would out here in the wild. The more she justified it to herself, the more reasonable it seemed, and before long, she was convinced.

Wordlessly, she crept as close as she thought was was safe, and once she reached the absolute limit of Skarmory's notice, she threw her Pokeball.

Truthfully, Valerie was rather inexperienced with most aspects of Pokemon. Training them, battling them, but most of all, catching them. She never had the luxury of attending a trainer's school, nor much opportunity to learn from hands-on experience. What Pokemon she did have had all been inherited from her late father, or gifts from his former co-workers. That is to say, the hard parts had all been done for her, and she simply got to enjoy the reward.

But if she was to make her dreams a reality, she would have to learn. A warden could not afford to be inexperienced, especially when it came to Pokemon. So, with Pokeballs in hand, she set out to the Rusturf Tunnel. Why there, of all places? She couldn't rightly say. Part of her just felt it was the right place to start.

So, she walked along the gloomy tunnel, waiting to see if her hunch was correct...

The desert of Route 111 was a harsh environment. The scorching sun beat down harsh upon the baking sands, creating an inescapable heat from both above and below. If that wasn't bad enough, the strong winds in the area had a habit of causing sandstorms, which greatly hampered visibility, mobility, and breathability alike. To top it all off, the Pokemon who lived here with among the most dangerous one could encounter, and vicious to boot. Even the simple act of surviving in such a place proved a challenge.

Perhaps that was why the League had elected to set up a training camp here? So that it might toughen up their batch of fresh-faced recruit into a hardened soldiers to serve their cause? The thought had certainly crossed Valerie's mind several times over, and each time she thought it, it proved more plausible than the last. After all, considering she and the rest of the trainees had been standing in line for the past thirty minutes, she had plenty of time to think. Though, the aforementioned heat of the sun was doing no favours to the quality of said thoughts, or her brain in general.

She breathed an exasperated sigh. She was sweaty, she was exhausted, her legs hurt, and her brain felt like it was melting. The whole experience was nothing short of torture, and not the dignified, legal kind. If it weren't sanctioned by the League itself, she would've thought this was criminal.

When was their instructor supposed to arrive...?

It was the place where her parents met. It was the place where she was born and raised. It was the place her Mother left behind, and the place where her Father lost her life.[break][break]

Everything important that ever happened to her happened her, it happened here. She wasn't born in a hospital, but in the woefully underequipped and understaffed doctor's office. She didn't learn in a school, but from a private tutor who made the long, long drive down at the behest of her Father. Some might call such an upbringing negligent, but she wouldn't accept such a critique. To her, the cramped warden's office was more of a home to her than any apartment, mansion, or estate could ever be. It was the idyllic paradise of her youth, and she wouldn't have it any other way.[break][break]

How long had it been, since it was torn away from her? Since that fateful day of the mass breakout that led to Slateport Penitentiary shutting down? Since everything she had known was destroyed? She can't recall. Even after she woke up from her coma, the damage was already done, part of who she was burnt away by the same venom that put her on death's door for so long. The scars still haven't faded. Sometimes, late at night, she can feel her old wounds ache, as though reminding her of everything that was taken from her, everything that she lost. [break][break]

Maybe that was why she went through so much effort to get Slateport Penitentiary reopened. Maybe that was the only way she could regain control of a life caught in a downward spiral. The thought of returning the crumbling husk of concrete to its former self, of filling its cells with those who originally ruined her life, was all that drove her forward.[break][break]

She didn't know if it was nostalgia or revenge, but so long as she could have it, there would be no price too steep to pay.[break][break]
