“As purple as my eyes,” he confirmed quietly as he stared at his reflection in the mirror above the sink.

“At least… for the first half of those twenty years, it turned purple. And then… after that, it turned white. Must… must be some strange magicks in the Hammerlocke air,” he added with a shrug.

“Because apparently, Remiel Calcifet mentioned in passing that during the latter part of our stay there, my hair did the funny changing colors thing again and it grew out. Dunno why it behaved that way… but. Can… can you imagine that?”

Once he’d shucked off the dripping shirt and hung it off the side of the sink, he stared at his reflection in the mirror again.

“This. M-my hair, turning purple, and then going white again?” he went on, a concerned frown crossing his face as he absently scratched at the discolored line of skin that marred his neck.

Fact of the matter was that he did not even blink at the mention of the hot bath (as you know him, he likes his showers as cold as possible) so wouldn’t that be a little alarming in and on itself, hm?

“And I thought it was growing for more than… more than that,” he cackled softly, fingers fumbling as he struggled to get the soaking-wet jacket off himself while Memo handled wet scarf duty.

Pruny fingers, why were you such a bane to deal with?

“My. My hair got all funny while we were all stuck there,” he thought back, now that he had a calmer moment to think about things.

“It turned purple. How weird is th-that?”

“I’m going to miss your long hair,” he hummed wistfully as he followed Memo towards the bathroom; never mind if he was still wearing his soaking wet clothes all the same.

The Wooloo, on the other hand, could only sigh and shake his head at the two crazy humans—he dared not follow them into the bathroom, anyway. Who knew what they were going to get up to in there?!

“But then again, when was the last time y-you cut your hair, Rapunzel?” he teased.

Now even his legs were complaining—like how white noise appears on TV, only a whole lot fucking worse—as he allows the other to pull him up standing.

And it’s only now he noticed something else…

“Your… your hair,” he remarked in that same quiet voice, one hand reaching up to run his own fingers through what was now decidedly short locs. “You… what happened to your hair?”

It was no longer as long as he remembered, that was for certain.

The soft jingling of a crown then caught his attention, and a very concerned ovine stared up at him.

“H-hi, Will,” he continued. “Why do you look… look so funny.”

‘Baa!’ came the emphatic baa’ing answer from the Wooloo.

He could recall by now, most of the details of the little disaster that happened when they were trapped between the virtual and the real world, and crinkled his brows together.

“Maybe I am. Such a self-sacrificing… little shit,” he chuckled quietly, his shoulders shaking with the mirth he was experiencing at the moment.

As for the offer of taking a bath? Together? Right now?

“As long as. As long as you stay with me, then. Then I wouldn’t mind doing anything you want with… with you.”

Never mind if he still felt a little unwell, or was it because of the disparity between the two time periods that still refused to settle like ripples on the surface of water…

“Do… do you mind, if. If first thing, tomorrow… we go to. To the hospital?” he went on, the edge in his voice dissipating the longer he stayed, the longer he was around—the more of his partner he took in.

Normally it would be a tooth and nail fight to even get him to go to Fortree General on the worst days.

A quiet bubble, a weak sound of mirth escaped him.

“Of course. Of course… you are. You always… will be.”

The rest of the words, ‘I gave you what remained of me to love and to hold, as long as we both ~~shall~~ live’ died in his throat as he felt the momentary separation, the anxious distance—before the kisses; soft and warm and present and full of love trailed down his forehead, his nose, on his lips—

He could still feel the tears running down his face as he took a shaky, wavering breath; an attempt to steady himself.

“F-for you, it hasn’t. F-for me, though, it felt like… utter hell,” he managed to say to quell the momentary silence that fell between them.

“Didn’t—didn’t we already promise each other that, though, that we would take care of… of each other? Th-through whatever hell comes screaming at us?”

Much as he wanted to give him a watery smile, he couldn’t; and so ended up resting his forehead against the other.

The moment he felt the reassuring weight around him, it took all his willpower not to break down again, because this was real.

It wasn’t an eternally-spanning nightmare of being trapped in another world that felt real.

He was here.

Back home.

The terror in him, though, continued to hang on as tightly as he could to the other man. His words foreign as he began to apologize, again and again and again of how he was right, how pointless it was to get into trouble, how meaningless it was to try and fix a gigantic problem—

But could anyone blame him for trying, though?

“Nobody,” he went on quietly as he somehow managed to stop himself from careening down another cliff into another spiral of a breakdown, “…nobody, in Hammerlocke, could compare. Not to you. Nobody. Nobody else.”

(There was the little thing between him and Miss Elise Calcifet however he would get to that later once he was more coherent and had more than two brain cells to rub together.)

“I was. I was gone, for twenty fucking years, and all I could think of. Was you. You, here, h-home… wondering if you were here, w-waiting for me, to return, from… from that hellscape. From Hammerlocke, everything just. Just hurt w-without you.”

The only thing he could do at this point was to just… let it all out.

All. Of it. Out.

The second Memo was close enough within grabbing range, he all but threw himself onto the other man, hiding his face in his partner’s shoulder.

(No, he was not going to break down in front of him. No, not today, not ever—too late, he already did.)

The sounds of a hushed, nervous breakdown-filled sobbing filled the quiet space between them as he cried.

Cried for the extreme length of time that he had not seen (and been with) the other.

Cried for the longing, the pining, the soul-crushing loneliness he endured while mired in ‘that’ Hammerlocke; one blasted so far back in time they felt like encroaching parasites invading an already fragile ecosystem…

He hadn’t even noticed that Shivani the Banette was out and about, the way he was now crying hard into Memo’s shoulder. Both of his arms were struggling to hold him close—hold him as tight as possible; never wanting to let go.

Not once. Not even once. Had he looked at another man, while stranded back in… wherever they came from.

Such was the pain of being eternally loyal, forever faithful to one person—and one person alone.

“I…” he finally said at last, muffled from the emotion still pouring out of him.

“I may not have that much of a green thumb,” he began with an apologetic chuckle, “…however, if you need help with growing a garden, all you need to do is ask, and I will help you.”

Because that was what he was there for, after all. Helping other people out while he wasn’t too busy with his own personal needs; few and far between as they were.

(Because, wasn’t this version of Hammerlocke, like—kind of adverse to those of his preference in gender? At least that was what he noticed.)

He took note that there were still persistent people chasing after her hand in marriage… and then, was subtly reminded with a cold sweat running down the back of his neck of the families that were also coming after him for his own hand as well.

(Never mind if they were both prominent members of Remiel Calcifet’s royal court, but there was that, too, so…)

“I was thinking,” he hummed quietly once he’d had enough time to mull things over.

“You have Mr Rose, and I have… I have him, we both know we have one person we hold close to our hearts, out there, somewhere…”

Oh, boy. He had to stop for a bit and take a deep breath.

“I was saying, and hopefully Remy agrees to it, but. Why don’t. Why don’t we work through this, together? You, and me? I know it would be more of a convenience thing, but it… it just might… work.”

“You… you d-don’t get it.”

He was trying to reach for the other man, this bewildered, frantic look in his eyes now that the other could get a closer look at his face.

“We… we were, at the. At the outside… of this cave. Down farther than. The Slab place. It was. There was a lot. Too much, going on, and—”

The rest of the words are coming out in a frantic, unintelligible mess as he struggled to piece what little thoughts he could together.

“The… don’t let… don’t let Will or anything else g-get the papers,” he continued quietly, reaching for the parchment sheets that were folded up small enough to be hidden in an inside pocket. “Th-that’s…”

He let out a quiet gasp when he felt his partner’s fingers close around his own. Words had failed him at that point, however, as he bit back a sob he’d been trying not to let out.

“Please. Please. S-stay here. W-with me.”

Most of the herd had scattered at the sudden collapse; only William dared remain close, approaching the two cautiously. What was going on between them?

Concern wrinkled the cute ovine’s face, the normal smile turned into a look of utter alarm as he looked from his soaking-wet human to the other human, and felt his head overheat. What was happening?!

“Hammer…locke,” he repeated quietly. “Or… at least, some variant of it…”

His hands then scrambled through his dripping jacket, belatedly realizing that there was something trapped in one of his jacket pockets. What luck it was the inner waterproof pocket, too, as numb fingers fumbled around and tried to get the zipper open.

“We got trapped… in Hammerlocke. There were… a lot of us, just… stuck there, too.”

Once the zipper had finally been released, a collection of folded… folded parchment paper, yellowed with time; would tumble out of said pocket. If there was one good thing he’d done? It was taking down notes of everything that had happened while they were all stranded there.

“D-don’t… don’t go… anywhere, please?” he begged quietly, the fog clearing out of his head at last as he realized where he was—one arm trying to desperately grab the other and hold him close.

“D-don’t. Don’t leave me here, don’t leave me alone.”
